PlayStation 6 concept with industrial looks and a retro-modern controller could actually work in 2027

Sony’s next big gaming console is in works under the wraps and will not be revealed any time soon. This development came to light when two job listings from Sony (now removed from the job board) hinted about their future intent. They were looking for someone who could help the company in “contributing to identifying and developing the technology portfolio of future PlayStation platforms.”

Backed by the fact that PlayStation 6 is going to be a living reality in the coming years, the concept design world couldn’t help but reignite their imagination. The PS6 concept with a streamlined design and the minimalistic one are the prime examples. Pretty futile exercise if you look from a neutral perspective but ask any gamer out there, and it is in fact not!

Designer: Darko DARMAR Markovic

Slated for 2027 release, the next-gen Sony gaming console will give the PS5 a solid stint of seven years before presenting gamers with the next big graduation of the world’s most famous gaming console. When the PS5 was released back in 2020 it was already a very futuristic design compared to the likes of Xbox. That trait will most definitely carry onto the PS6, and this concept design with a very industrial look could be a very good starting point for the in-house Sony designers.

Taking a leap to a very Cyberpunk aesthetic with the wireless controller slot on the sides makes more sense than ever. It looks like an introverted Cyborg Mecha, ready to reveal its furious side. While the console unit has a futuristic DNA to it, the controller seems like a nostalgic mix of classic controllers graduated into the next-gen Metaverse world. That said, it is very sleek and the buttons are ergonomically positioned for tactical in-game advantage.

The vertical design approach gives this PlayStation 6 a staunch character much like the current generation console. Combined with the cool color options (Pristine White, Cool Blue and Military Green) that Darko has proposed, the PS6 could continue its dominance in this form.

Sony PlayStation 6 console concept emerges with a more crowd-pleasing sleek, streamlined design

While Sony has officially indicated that the PlayStation 6 could be expected in 2027 (giving the PS5 another 4 strong years of dominance), a viral fan concept imagines what the console will look like… and more importantly, will its design still be polarizing?

Designed as the next-generation gaming console from Sony, the PlayStation 6 concept is a towering behemoth of the gaming industry. Just like its predecessor, it’s poised to be the most popular gaming console in the world. Its design, however, feels like an about-turn after the PS5’s widely-debated organic ‘alien-tower’ design. The PlayStation 6 takes the same vertical console approach, but instead, has an imposing ‘skyscraper-inspired’ design that looks like it could easily be a part of a futuristic city skyline. Straight lines, incredibly wide curves, and signature blue lighting define the PS6 concept’s design, combining the best of the PS5 and the PS3 into one superlative package.

The upper profile sports a boat-shaped design, which works incredibly well in creating the illusion of slimness. You’ve got wedges on both the front and back, mimicking a MacBook Air-ish approach to sleekness, while also pretty much showing you where the air would flow in and out of. Where the similarities with the PS5 tie in are in the presence of distinct panels on the left and right, and the color scheme (especially the blue lighting). Just like with the PS5, the panels cover the electricals, and provide distinct vents for air intake and exhaust, helping keep the console cool. LED lights hidden within the panels create an internal glow that makes the PlayStation 6 look like it’s alive. The designers even propose a smartphone app to be able to change the lighting as a gamer-friendly RGB custom feature.

The skyscraper-inspired design gives the PS6 its majestic appeal. This one’s definitely not as polarizing either.

Other details on the design front include the iconography running along the central rim of the console. This fun detail gives the PS6 a slight sense of whimsy, bringing a little element of playfulness to an otherwise serious and intimidating-looking piece of hardware.

Move over to the back and that same rim houses the PlayStation 6’s ports. Although controversial to begin with, this console concept doesn’t have any of the traditional ports, like the HDMI and Ethernet inputs. Instead, the PS6 has 3 USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports that support power, data, and video at 40Gbps bandwidth. I guess you’ll need to keep one of Satechi’s multiport dongles handy if you want to hook in traditional displays, projectors, or connect your PS6 directly to the internet. There’s also a noticeable lack of a disc input, suggesting at a digital-only device.

The conceptual console also comes in color variants (so you don’t need dbrand plates to turn your PS matte black). The next-gen console comes in pure silver and satin grey, along with a smartphone app that lets you play around with the built-in RGB lighting. Although entirely conceptual, this design exercise is a fun way of imagining what the next console will look like. Will Sony lean into the weird organic design? Will they circulate incredibly ugly dev-kit prototype images just to throw us off course? I guess we’ve got another 4 years to speculate!

A look at the interface shows a few tweaks to the experience.

This PlayStation 6 concept is a minimalistic gaming console Sony could design in the near future

Sony PlayStation 6 is still a long way away from release but it could take a detour from the stylized look of the PlayStation 5, and go for a minimalistic design language tracing back to the roots!

When it comes to hotness, the current generation PlayStation ranks way high up above the Xbox Series X and Series S. The flowing design with those futuristic cues, makes the PS5 a staple for hardcore gamers who are particular about how their gadgets look. The sales number also suggests that Sony’s gaming console is ahead by almost 5.4 million units with total sales in the last 13 months to be 15.28 million. The Xbox Series S sold 9.84 million units globally during this period.

It is obvious we look forward to the release of the next winning gaming console by Sony which is speculated for a 2026 release date. The development of the PlayStation 5 started off in 2015 and then was released in November 2020. So, it is safe to assume, the PlayStation 6 is already in development and it is going to be another winner on our hands. While nobody knows how the gaming console from Sony will look, this concept by She Yin gives us an idea. The designer deems it as a PlayStation 5 console concept design practice, but this is the perfect opportunity to assume the design of the PS6 console.

Looking more like a turntable, the concept design has a semblance of the old PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 design aesthetics. Going back to the more geometric form factor with profoundly bigger vents attributed to the better thermal cooling system. The game disk slots in right at the top just like the first PlayStation, adding that nostalgic feel to the gaming console in the near future when it is released. Minimalism seems to take precedence here as the console bears an all-white or black form factor – having elements only the elements that are required. The connecting ports and the power toggle button is on the front to get going with the gaming action without moving away from the cozy comforts of the couch.
