Smartphone upcycling concept helps give your old companion a new lease on life

Mobile devices, both smartphones and tablets, have become an inescapable fact of modern life to the point that almost everyone has one. While they do empower people with their smart features, they unfortunately also inflict damage on the environment, whether it’s through their manufacturing or, more often than not, their improper disposal. Not all smartphone manufacturers have a well-established or easy process for owners to send back unused or broken devices for handling and responsible disposal, which means many of these end up in landfills where they eventually poison the soil and water. Some of these aren’t even totally broken just outdated or unused for one reason or another. Finding a different use for them delays their untimely demise, which is exactly what this upcycling concept tries to do, offering smartphones a better life after death.

There could be a variety of reasons for ditching an old but still functional smartphone. Some parts, like the screen, battery, or charging port might no longer be in tip-top shape, or the owner simply upgraded to a newer model that will last them another two years or so. Whatever the reason may be, it might not actually be enough to warrant simply throwing the phone in the waste bin, or even just keeping it in a drawer until it’s forgotten forever or, worse, becomes a safety hazard.

Project Afterlife tries to remedy that situation by upcycling rather than recycling the phone. This means it puts the device to a different use without actually modifying it or taking it apart, thereby using less energy, less resources, and less effort. This increases the likelihood that people will adopt this product because it is accessible and easy to use.

The product concept pretty much comes in a taco-like crescent shape made of recycled plastic and given a frosted finish. You simply slide in the phone from the opening and set it on a flat surface with its curved edge at the bottom. The shape is balanced in such a way that it will stay still unless you intentionally rock it, and that rocking motion actually affects its functions. Just like a game controller with motion sensors, tilting the phone lets you cycle through its different modes without having to touch the screen. Rocking also makes the “Endless Clock” change the clock face at every movement, while both the “Timeline” photo stream and the “Moment” abstract art display also react to such movement.

Admittedly, you can simply take that same old smartphone, put it on a stand, and use it in the same way as a clock or small photo frame. Project Afterlife, however, also transforms the phone into a kinetic art object that will enhance the ambiance of your desk or shelf. It’s a simple yet impressive example of how upcycling not only helps save the environment but even adds value to your experience.

Old dorm furniture gets upcycled into new useful pieces, giving them a new life

Sometimes when doing major renovations, some people think that just throwing away furniture and other things are easier rather than thinking of ways that they can be saved or recycled. But as people have grown more conscious about how we consume and dispose of things, we’re seeing projects that are able to repurpose and upcycle various objects instead of just throwing them all into landfill or garbage disposal centers. Sometimes, the final product may actually look better than the original one where the materials came from.

Oxford Brookes University was refurbishing and renovating around 250 student bedrooms in their dorms and had plans to just bring the furniture straight to the landfill. One of their furniture design students thought about using the raw material from the beds and drawers and incorporate them into new furniture designs. The Upscaling Upcycling project born and he wanted to use this as an example that designers can use materials from objects around them that can no longer be used.

What Kurzmann did was to disassemble the existing furniture and then use them to build new kinds of furniture that he designed. For the bedframes taken from the old dorms, he was able to turn them into stackable stools that have some overlapping lines and frames. He also used the bed slats to create stacking chairs, both with arms and without. He was able to turn the drawers into storage towers that act more like shelves.

The final furniture output are pretty well-designed and also very useful and practical. Good thing he was able to “save” these beds and drawers that would have otherwise just gone to waste or would have served as fire kindling. At least now, these pieces have also benefitted the school as they will be able to use it in various spaces.

Mosevic denim sunglasses upcycles thigh-wear to eyewear

It’s almost too easy to take for granted the way clothing and apparel can affect the environment. After all, they aren’t completely made from plastic, though some are made from synthetic non-biodegradable fibers. Textile, however, uses a lot of water, energy, and toxic chemicals, and the denim material that makes up our favorite jeans is one of those culprits. Given how many of us go through dozens of clothes a year or just how many unsold clothes are made annually, the potential for textile to overrun landfills is frighteningly high. Of course, we can always recycle them, but few people and companies actually do that. Fortunately, there is also a rising trend of upcycling used products or material waste, like this startup that turns fashionable jeans into fashionable sunglasses.

Denim has unique material and visual properties that make it an interesting ingredient in many products or artworks that aren’t related to clothing. The unique patterns and rough texture of denim make it easily distinguishable among other textiles, so anything that “wears” it will make one immediately think of jeans. As it turns out, it’s also possible to turn denim into other objects with the right mix of ingredients that make it almost as tough as plastic but exponentially more eco-friendly.

Mosevic was born from a desire to reduce the negative impact of wasted denim material on the environment, even by just a little bit. Just like how layers of carbon fibers mixed with resin have become a common material used in engineering, the “Shades of Denim” collection is made from layers of waste denim infused with bio-resin and then pressed to become a solid structure. The resulting material is then machined into the individual parts that make up the eyewear and then connected with specially-designed metal reinforcements.

The resulting “Solid Denim” material retains many of the desirable properties of denim, like the patterns of cotton fibers formed when cutting through the material, as well as the texture and appearance of denim. However, unlike typical denim, these pieces are finished with hard natural wax that makes them resistant to water and oils, such as those on your skin or sunscreen. For all intents and purposes, these sunglasses are like your typical shades, except that they look like designer accessories because of their unique flair.

The Mosevic sunglasses give old jeans and waste denim a new home and delay their eventual fate in landfills. That said, the entire process isn’t yet completely sustainable, both in an environmental way and in business terms. The sunglasses are handmade in small batches, a process that takes up to two weeks to finish. Fortunately, there are plans to scale up and make the process more efficient for larger numbers, which ultimately translates to more denim material being upcycled.

Given the amount of denim used, however, it still wouldn’t put a dent in the textile waste problem. Every little bit counts, though, and the use of textile in this manner could spark the imagination and creativity of other designers to come up with ways to upcycle materials and transform them into something new and something beautiful.

Samsung sustainability initiative takes a step forward with Unpacked 2022 devices

Smartphones are one of the most ubiquitous pieces of consumer electronics in the world today. An overwhelming number of people have one, some might even have two, and millions of phones are shipped every quarter. In fact, there might be too many smartphones out there in the world, and not all of them are actually in use or even in one piece. As wonderful as smartphones are, their production and disposal contribute to the worsening state of our environment, especially because of how many they are. Smartphone manufacturers have thankfully started to be more aware of their critical role in this broken ecosystem and, even better, are starting to take action. As one of the world’s biggest smartphone makers, Samsung is thankfully taking that responsibility seriously and is boasting the achievements that take it closer to its grand goal in 2025.

From the cradle to the grave, a smartphone’s life is filled with materials and processes that harm the environment or even people. From the plastics used in electronics to the chemicals for treating different parts to the materials used in packaging, these powerful computers in our pockets and hands are almost like death traps for the planet. It’s too late to turn back, of course, so smartphone manufacturers are instead trying to reduce their negative impact little by little on all fronts. Samsung’s “Galaxy for the Planet” initiative tries to cover those different fronts, and the newest batch of devices it just announced demonstrates the progress it has made since the program was announced last year.

Samsung started with the Galaxy S22 earlier this year by using plastics made from recycled fishing nets that would have otherwise ruined our oceans and aquatic life. Since then, Samsung has expanded the use of that material to other Galaxy devices, including the Galaxy Book 2 Pro laptop and the Galaxy Tab S8 tablets. The new Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 continue that tradition and are even joined by the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro. In fact, Samsung boasts that 90% of its new pro earbuds are made using recycled materials. Given its smaller size and fewer components, that is admittedly not that hard to pull off.

The company has also been trying to improve its packaging, and no, it’s not just about removing the charger. The company now uses 100% recycled paper for the packaging of its flagship phones, which does raise questions about the state of its non-flagship phone packaging. Samsung is also trying to reduce how much single-use plastic it puts inside the box, though it’s not yet ready to get rid of them entirely. Both the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Galaxy Z Flip 4 boxes are less than half the size of their original models, which results in more efficient transport and reduced carbon emissions overall.

Sooner or later, phones do reach their end of life, mostly because they no longer meet the needs of their owners. That doesn’t mean they’re completely useless, though, especially if they’re actually still functional. Rather than simply breaking these down and having them undergo recycling processes that consume a lot of water and energy, Samsung is proposing upcycling phones to serve other needs, like acting as smart home hubs or cameras. In one specific case, old Galaxy devices even become eye diagnostic tools used in underserved communities.

These small steps forward take Samsung closer to its ambitious goal for 2025, but it might still be quite a ways away from that milestone. In three years, Samsung envisions itself as having eliminated all plastics in packaging, achieved zero waste to landfill, and used recycled materials on all mobile products, not just the flagship ones. Those are lofty goals, indeed, and some might say almost impossible to reach by 2025. When it comes to sustainability, however, every step, no matter how small, counts toward healing the planet and making sure there will still be people around to buy those fancy smartphones in the future.

How were these sustainable stools made? By upcycling old bicycles.

My brother is eight-years-old, and unlike me, he is a natural when it comes to biking. Over the summer, he and my family went biking every weekend to break from the monotony of quarantine. Like my brother, many bikers make the max joy out of riding their bikes. However, with every growth spurt, you have to buy a different bike each year to accommodate your changing habits. So, what happens to the older ones – the ones that are no longer being used? You could sell those bikes on Facebook Marketplace/ eBay or any other online market, however, that’s not always an option for old bikes. Sometimes their chains rust, preventing them from being used for their intended purpose. The frame is still in good condition, but it’s not a bike anymore. And so, it gets thrown out.

Instead of creating more waste, the 2 Stools from 1 Bicycle project makes use of what’s already there. It creates a product that everyone can use and would be less inclined to throw away. A stool is like a clothes hanger, it is something that you don’t necessarily think about, but it is a product that adds convenience to your daily life. Also, thanks to the stools’ unique aesthetics, you won’t want to give them away. Usually, stools have a symmetrical structure, but these are different. Their slanted legs create an unusual shape and remind me of the original bike-frames they were taken from. One stool has three legs; the other has four. Similar to my poorly plucked eyebrows, these stools are sisters, not twins. The seat itself is made from recyclable cork, so even though it doesn’t come from the original bike, it is still in line with the project’s sustainability mission.

The concept of this product allows people to take a sentimental object and give it a new life. Don’t give away your bike second-hand or let it gather dust in your garage … repurpose it and continue to make memories.

The Upcycling Project

By simply adding an aesthetic cap to it, designer Ryan Choi hopes to extend the useful life of a plastic bottle. Many bottles get dumped and wasted, so adding this cap not only extends the life but also adds purpose; for example making a vase out of the bottle – Upcycling the form.

Ryan explains, “The cap protects against unwanted elements entering the bottle and as easy use lid that opens and closes quite simply for usability.”
