This groundbreaking project, set to rise on Calle 72, one of the city’s bustling main arteries, promises to be a visual and functional masterpiece for Universidad Ean’s School of Sustainable Design.

Inspired by Werregue basketry, a unique weaving technique of the Wounaan indigenous community, the building’s front façade will be a captivating mosaic of crafted columns and open terraces. This design not only celebrates local heritage but also infuses modern architectural flair, making it a standout addition to Bogotá’s skyline.

The innovative columns of the building, which denote the earthy vibe of the project, are not just regular forms seen in past structures. They resemble organic stones stacked on top of each other, supporting the balconies above. The design detailing of the joint where the balcony slab meets the column is particularly fascinating, and easily noticeable from the ground. This junction appears like ripples created when a stone touches water, adding a unique and visually engaging element to the architecture. The vibrant colors of the columns are certainly eye-catching, ensuring the building stands out in the urban landscape.

Eliot Postma, group leader and partner at Heatherwick Studio, explained that creativity is intrinsic to the city of Bogotá and evident everywhere. He expressed the studio’s desire for students to feel proud of their campus even before entering the building, envisioning a public square that would provide passers-by with a welcoming communal oasis amidst the hard urban surroundings.

Heatherwick Studio’s design goes beyond aesthetics; it aims to create a central gathering space for the Universidad Ean campus. The new building will complement existing heritage structures, introducing a rare and much-needed public space in the heart of the city. The design team is also pioneering the use of innovative façade materials to withstand Bogotá’s intense sunlight, ensuring the building’s resilience and longevity.

Colombia, celebrated as the world’s second most biodiverse country, positions Bogotá as a leader in sustainable development. Tentacle Media, a UK-based animation studio, has taken this vintage technology and given it a contemporary twist with their latest creation: the Mini-Mutoscope.

The creative director expressed that while they loved animation, consuming it only digitally lacks the tactile quality, texture, and presence of print media or physical art. The Mini-Mutoscope, according to Wilkinson, reintroduces that tangible connection, offering a physical interaction with animation that he likened to experiencing a live photo on a phone, but with a vintage, handcrafted feel.

Tentacle Media collaborated with Typoretum, a studio renowned for its antique and vintage printing expertise, to design a visually striking body for the device. The result is a plywood-based product that’s not only durable but also aesthetically pleasing. With bold colors, crisp lines, and a satisfying tactile feel, the Mini-Mutoscope is as much a piece of art as it is a tool for animation. The divide between urban centers, agricultural areas, and natural ecosystems is widening, leading to significant environmental, social, and logistical challenges. Urumqi, the political, economic, and cultural hub of Xinjiang in northwest China, epitomizes this conflict between urban development and agricultural ecological resources. To address these pressing issues, the innovative architectural design concept of “Urban Intercropping” has been proposed.

Inspired by traditional agricultural intercropping systems, where different crops are grown together to optimize the use of resources, the Urban Intercropping concept integrates this planting pattern with urban spatial planning. The Urban Intercropping model shifts from a centralized to a decentralized urban development approach. Architectural slicing devices are introduced into underutilized spaces within the city, transforming them into productive and functional areas. This approach maximizes the use of space and resources, addressing the issues of urban sprawl and inefficient land use.

Central to this design is the concentration of agricultural industries in high-rise buildings using a vertical intercropping planting model. This model optimizes the use of space, light, and other resources, enabling high-density agricultural production within urban settings. These high-rise agricultural hubs are composed of mechanical devices, non-mechanical facilities, and movable living units, addressing urban housing shortages, traffic congestion, and the lack of green spaces. By enhancing urban efficiency and revitalizing intermediate urban areas, these structures create a dynamic and sustainable urban environment.

Urban Intercropping emphasizes the transformation of urban morphology by integrating skyscrapers and other tall structures into existing urban spaces. These buildings are designed to connect seamlessly with the underground transportation system, alleviating traffic congestion and improving urban mobility. The incorporation of these vertical elements redefines the city’s skyline and promotes a more efficient use of urban space.

A key component of the Urban Intercropping concept is the construction of ecological corridors. These corridors are designed to preserve air quality and prevent dust storms by planting specific types of vegetation that stabilize sand and purify the air. Greenhouse membranes and platforms support these plants, creating green spaces that serve as habitats for wildlife and recreational areas for residents. These corridors also facilitate the migration of animals and provide healthy, green environments for pedestrians and transportation networks.

The design also focuses on the generation and arrangement of social unit spaces, drawing inspiration from the Eight Queens Problem. This mathematical problem involves placing eight queens on a chessboard so that no two queens threaten each other, ensuring optimal spatial efficiency. Similarly, in Urban Intercropping, functional units are arranged to allow for the smooth transfer of movable community units without disrupting other activities. This ensures flexibility and efficiency in urban spaces, accommodating changing needs and uses.

Multifunctional membranes, vertical and horizontal transportation equipment, modular units, and greenhouse boxes are integrated to form an interconnected system. San Francisco-based design studio Whipsaw has unveiled its latest innovation, the Aescape—a robotic massage system that merges artificial intelligence with cutting-edge robotics to offer a personalized and efficient massage experience. This groundbreaking product is set to redefine the future of massage therapy, addressing both the demands of users and the constraints faced by the massage industry.

The Aescape features metal arms with silicone-covered “hands” that mimic the feel and function of human hands, providing a realistic and soothing massage. The massage table is luxuriously wrapped in vegan faux leather, ensuring comfort and durability. Underneath the headrest lies a user-friendly display, allowing clients to tailor their massage sessions to their specific needs and preferences.

Aescape is engineered to deliver deep-tissue massages with unparalleled precision. The system’s metallic arms are securely attached to the massage table, while silicone pads on the “hands” replicate the natural contours of human hands, enhancing the authenticity of the massage. The innovative design is the brainchild of Aescape founder Eric Litman, who initially created a prototype before collaborating with Whipsaw to develop the final product.

In one of his interviews, Dan Harden, founder of Whipsaw, explained that they were challenged to integrate new technologies, define an all-new physical form factor, explore and create the essence of an Aescape brand through color, material, and finishes, and refine every single design detail. He noted that its appearance had to look very friendly and approachable, especially considering that robotic arms can be intimidating to some. Additionally, it also had to fit all types of user sizes, shapes, and ages.

To cater to diverse body types, the Aescape system uses suspended sensors to perform 3D scans of a user’s body before the massage begins. These sensors are discreetly placed inside light rings to minimize any discomfort or anxiety users might feel about being observed. The collected images and user data are processed through an AI-driven program, which is continuously updated with new data from each massage session. This ensures that every stroke and technique applied by the robot is informed by professional massage therapists and extensive robotic research. The users have a screen below their headrest to even customize their experience and get the most out of it.

The company emphasizes that every stroke the robot is commanded to do has been informed by licensed professional massage therapists, numerous prototype experiments, and years of robotic research. Aescape employs a formidable amount of AI and machine learning technology, enabling it to constantly improve and build its database, which informs its programming.

An Aescape representative mentioned that the machine is designed not to replace human masseuses but to supplement the industry by addressing the shortage of qualified massage therapists. It was stated that Aescape is much more efficient and sustainable than large groups of massage therapists, who often require significant health care due to workplace injuries. Additionally, using robotics reduces commuting-related environmental factors, such as vehicle pollution and energy usage.

The system’s efficiency allows users to enjoy a comprehensive massage in just 30 minutes, fitting seamlessly into busy schedules. With an on-demand booking app, users can easily find and book massage sessions ranging from 15 to 120 minutes, ensuring that personalized care is always within reach.
