This Japanese flat-pack fire pit sets up effortlessly and uses a dual combustion system to amplify heat

When I say campfire, it would evoke a different emotion in each one of us. Time for self, chat with friends, searing meat for dinner; everything besides an ignited fire pit. One thing that remains constant though is the usual fuss of igniting the fire, tending to it, and ensuring it burns with less smoke and more heat. Finally, there may be a flat-packed fire pit that wants to ensure setting up fire is a breeze and you can control intensity and ambiance, thanks to its customizable metal plank design.

The user-friendly UM Fire Pit is a product of Japanese craftsmanship and immaculate metalwork. The design is pretty straightforward: you have a round base, that collects ash and has air vents to help in combustion as wood burns in the pit. The pit comprises eight similar-sized laser-cut and bent sheets of metal, which vertically fasten into the dedicated grooves in the base. You can choose to use a few or all of the planks, depending on whether you want to watch the fire burn when you’re sitting alone outside your tent, or want to barbecue steak for family dinner at the park next to your RV.

Gif 4

Given its design, the UM Fire Pit disassembles and can fit – along with its grill grate – into the carrying bag the size of a laptop case. When you’re at the campsite, you can assemble the fire pit back up in under a minute and build an effective campfire with minimal hassle. Interestingly, the fire pit packed up for transportation weighs 13 lbs, so if you’re a backpacker, this may not be the best bet. But if you’re driving or riding into the wilderness, there cannot be a more utility fire pit companion for you.

Airflow

I say this not because the UM Fire Pit has a fancy design and appears trendy and everything. In fact, I base my argument on its dual combustion design. The air vents in the base generate airflow into the pit helping boost air circulation, which permits the wood to burn more efficiently with less smoke. The eight panels making an enclosed heat chamber create secondary combustion which allows the wood to burn well. A grill plate can be added to the top (covers half portion) of the vertically aligned planks to prepare a good, smoked meal made possible by the pit’s adjustable combustion system and optimized airflow.

And when you want more visibility of the fire and don’t want to use the grilling option, you can remove a few panels and create the balance of warmth and visibility you want. The ash collected in the base of the UM Fire Pit is easy clean up, while the corrosion-resistant stainless interior of the base and the metal planks assure durability and years of usage. The exterior black color of these panels exudes a rustic charm made possible with mill scale coating instead of paint. The fire pit is currently being crowdfunded, it has already reached the funding goal and should be in line with its estimated shipping time of January 2024. The UM Fire Pit will retail for $299 but is for now available at a discount of $225. The product is made and will be shipped from Japan, so overseas customers will have to bear shipping and customs fees.

This terracotta chimney gives you the warmth of a fireplace in a small, sustainable package

Most fireplaces in older apartments have been decommissioned because of how much of a health hazard they are. However, it’s no secret that fire is one of the most effective ways to generate heat, whether it’s for cooking food or for keeping you warm. While the chances of you having a working fireplace in your home are near zero, the folks at NextNova have designed the next best thing – a terracotta heater that uses a unique airflow pattern to create a tower of fire that heats your home while also optionally distributing a fragrance of your choice.

Designer: NextNova

The Tornado combines the charm of a fireplace with the safety of, say, a scented candle. The terracotta-based heater relies on airflow, along with the thermal properties of baked clay to generate radiating heat for both the indoors as well as the outdoors. On the inside, it burns bioethanol using ceramic wool as a substrate, generating heat without any smoke, ash, harmful chemicals, or bad odors. This means you can use the Tornado inside your home without worrying about triggering the fire alarm!

The Tornado comes from the same folks that designed the Egloo, which we dubbed “the world’s most affordable thermostat” back in 2017. Significantly larger than the Egloo, it stands at 17 inches tall, with an internal chamber that creates a large fire vortex that generates much more heat than you would get from the Egloo. In fact, the makers claim it outputs 7000 BTU (British Thermal Units) of heat, allowing it to do the job of a miniature campfire in your room, heating things up without burning any electricity!

The Tornado gets its name from the uniquely tall flame it creates. Strategically placed openings in the sides of the vertical chamber channel air in to amplify the fire, creating a wind vortex that lifts the flame up to 5x higher than usual. This not only increases the Tornado’s heat production, it also makes for a rather alluring display on the front, allowing you to admire the rising flame in all its glory.

Metal components help absorb excess heat, preventing the terracotta shell from cracking.

Once the flame is roaring, it heats the terracotta shell, which then emanates warmth to heat your home. The Tornado’s designed to be used both indoors as well as outdoors, mimicking the effect of a fireplace without the hazards of smoke or a potential disaster. The flame is contained within the Tornado’s secure and stable design. Just remember not to touch it, because it gets pretty hot!

Aside from heating, the Tornado can be used to diffuse aromas too. Just add a few drops of an essential oil of your choice to the ceramic wool, and the heat causes aromatic compounds to enter the air, working the way a scented candle does!

The strategic openings also serve an important purpose in allowing you to light or extinguish your Tornado. The lighting process first starts by lifting up the top hood to reveal the heat-resistant ceramic tray inside, with ceramic wool substrate. Pour your bio-ethanol in before placing the hood back. The openings on the side then let you place a long-neck lighter in to light the fire, or a flame snuffer to extinguish the fire instantaneously.

The Tornado currently finished crowdfunding on Kickstarter, raising an impressive $88,485 from nearly 500 backers. The backers will now get to choose what color they want their Tornado in, ranging from the classic beige and orange, to even colors like white, blue, red, and black!

This foldable fire pit stand brings the joy of space-saving design to outdoor camping and meals

Although summer is just around the corner in some parts of the world, enjoying a hot meal outdoors with family and friends can happen any time of the year. It doesn’t happen easily, of course, and sometimes the planning and preparation alone are enough to cause stress and make the activity seem less enjoyable. They say that some of the best things in life are simple, and bonfires don’t get simpler than this puzzle-like metal bonfire stand. Easy to carry around and easy to assemble, this simple yet fully functional bonfire stand will have you ready to get warm, grill food, and enjoy nature, whether alone or in the company of loved ones, in no time and with no fuss.

Whether you’re trying to stay warm on a cold night or cooking a hearty lunch, a bonfire is a staple and critical part of the outdoor camping experience. Of course, there are very modern and technology-centric methods to have heat and cook outdoors, but there’s still something to be said for food cooked or smoked over burning wood or charcoal. Unfortunately, traditional bonfires and fire pits are also difficult to use and carry around, making the overall experience less enjoyable, regardless of the end result.

FireBase solves this problem not by heaping more features and technological marvels but by distilling the design down to its most important parts. There are really only five metal parts to this bonfire stand, and they slot into each other like puzzle pieces so that you can stop fussing over the equipment and start concentrating on the most important parts: the fire and the food. Slot in the optional trivets, and you’ve got a stand for putting pots and pans on top as well.

The metal bonfire stand embraces a minimalist design where every part and cutout serves a purpose. In addition to the slots for inserting metal pieces like trivets and side plates, there are also holes in the middle that facilitate airflow. This assortment of shapes gives the bonfire stand a rather distinctive industrial aesthetic that perfectly fits its purpose. And when it’s time to pack up, it’s just as easy to disassemble the contraption for more convenient cleaning and carrying.

The FireBase bonfire stand is made from black steel plates using a prototype sheet metal technology that makes the parts less prone to warping and distortion due to heat. That said, it is still expected to see some discoloration over time, giving each bonfire stand a one-of-a-kind appearance that differs from owner to owner. Convenient to carry, easy to assemble, and simple to use, this puzzle-like metal bonfire stand removes your worries about setting up the campfire so that you can spend more time cooking and enjoying the great outdoors.

This spherical fire pit comes in a striking form fit for any modern outdoor space

It might have one of the most ironic names for a fire bowl, but this flaming bubble is a good example of form and function working hand-in-hand.

Fire pits are probably one of the last things you’d consider to have a designer product. The way they get charred and burned means they could lose their charm sooner than most products, especially outdoors bowls that are exposed to the elements most of the time. That, however, only served to inspire designers to find a solution that is both practical and beautiful, leading to a fire bowl that looks more like a fire ball.

Designer: Focus

It may have been called “Bubble” for some reason, but that’s definitely not because of its fragility. This nearly spherical fire pit is made from sturdy steel, and its anti-corrosion coating toughens it even more against the elements. The fire basin inside is also designed to make it easy to be removed for ash disposal and cleaning, making it easier to maintain the Bubble’s good looks.

The fire pit’s opening isn’t completely level, as you might have expected from other fire bowls. Its top has been chopped off at an incline, with the “back” rising higher than the front and acting as a shield to protect the fire against the wind. This removes the need to have any other protective cover, making the design simpler and less susceptible to broken parts.

The Bubble’s completely flat bottom means it won’t be rolling away from you, but two rear caster wheels do mean it doesn’t have to be completely stationary. The fire pit can be easily moved across any flat surface or simply turned around to turn against the direction of the wind.

The ironically-named Bubble fire bowl definitely has an eye-catching minimalist design that would look great both outdoors as well as indoors. The current model uses wood to bring light and warmth, but the designer is promising a gas version will be coming, which won’t score points for sustainability.

Freddy Krueger Fire Pit Is the Stuff of Nightmares

One, Two, Freddy’s coming for you… Three, Four, better lock your door… Those simple words still send chills down my spine. After all, Freddy Krueger is one of the scariest villains in the history of horror flicks. Those of us who grew up watching A Nightmare on Elm Street and its sequels had a hard time sleeping after worrying that Freddy might come to visit us in our dreams. Now, Freddy is back and ready to take up residence as a waking nightmare in your backyard. Only this time, he’s on fire!

UK artist Burned by Design makes this custom Freddy Krueger fire pit that’s sure to give your neighbors pause before stepping across the property line. The 33″ tall wood burner features Freddy’s nightmarish visage, complete with scars and burn marks, his beady eyes, and jagged teeth backlit by fire. Flames belch forth from his trademark hat while his steel-bladed glove beckons you to come closer to the flame.

If you’ve got about $1500 burning a hole in your pocket, you can order your own Freddy Krueger fire pit from the Burned by Design shop on Etsy.

Extremely Accurate Globe Fire Pit: The World Is Burning

Created by West Coast Firepits using actual satellite imagery and cut with 0.02″ precision, the Earthbound firepit is advertised as “the most geographically accurate world map firepit in the world.” And that’s important, because what good is a globe firepit if you can’t use it to pinpoint where in the world Carmen Sandiego is hiding?

Crafted from 1/4″ steel, the firepits are available in 30″ and 37″ sizes ($3,000 and $3,500, respectively) and three different finishes: raw steel, black ceramic, and silver ceramic (+$500 for a ceramic finish). The base model is designed for wood burning, but propane or natural gas burning options are also available (+$450). Can’t afford a firepit that costs thousands? Just use a 55-gallon drum as I have been for years.

Are you obligated to hum Billy Joel’s ‘We Didn’t Start The Fire’ when you actually are starting the fire? I think we can all agree it would be a shame if you didn’t. Just like if you don’t take the opportunity to make a melancholy joke about global warming as well.

This outdoor fire pit + flexible grill is the perfect accessory to elevate your camping trip!

Setting up fire and cooking are two integral things that the average adventurist does wrong. It’s not easy camping if you are not sure how you’re going to set up a fire, and eventually cook the food you have been carrying. Fire pits are an option, but most of them you find on the market weigh heavy and occupy a lot of space; owing to which many campers take to the woods without the equipment. For the good of every camper, Pyro Camp Fire and Grill presents a portable alternative to setting up the fire under the night sky and grill to prepare a sumptuous meal in the wilderness.

Pyro Camp Fire is a portable fire pit constructed chiefly of American steel. It is provided with a grill/griddle extension for enthusiasts who want to create an inviting ambiance by burning wood or charcoal in a safe and clean manner. And when the stomach calls, the top extension can be swapped and you are good to prepare a meal or heat up the precook food on you. Designed by a team of camping and overloading enthusiasts themselves, this portable fire pit has an 18-inch long and 14-inch wide combustion chamber, while the contraption measure 9-inch tall. The entire pit weighs only 14.5 pounds making it appropriate to carry on every camping trail you’re headed for. The standout here is its side-loading system that lets you easily add wood without having to remove the top fire screen or grill.

The lightweight and compact fire pit accommodates up to 16-inch firewood and burns it safely within the combustion chamber covered with a protective mesh of perforated stainless steel. The mesh around the Pyro Camp Fire offers an unobstructed view of fire encircling within, and also provides excellent airflow for complete combustion while containing burning embers safely inside. Pyro Camp Fire includes a removable top fire screen and the ash catcher in the base. While the stainless steel base can be removed for ease of cleaning the ash and debris, the top mesh screen can be removed for open fire experience and swapped with the grill/griddle. The grill cooktop seasons just like cast iron to function as a fantastic cooking surface. The extension includes a cutting board that provides additional prep space.

With Pyro Camp Fire in contention, it’s time to give your camping gear a second thought. If you have been carrying a heavy and outdated fire pit, or don’t have one at all, Pyro should be a nice portable and safe option. Since the fire pit is nicely covered with fire screen all the time, burning embers are controlled within, ensuring even kids can be around it without you having to worry too much. If it interests you, the Camp fire pit retails for $249 and with the grill extension, the price scales up to $349.

This Millennium Falcon Fire Pit Has Got Fire in Her Belly

She may not look like much, but this fire pit has got it where it counts, kid. Normally, if you saw giant flames shooting out of the Millennium Falcon, you’d think it was curtains for Han and Chewie. But this version of their ship is designed to take plenty of heat as it emerges from hyperspace with the Empire on its tail.

This awesome Millennium Falcon fire pit was built by artist Alex Dodson of Burned by Design, and definitely looks like it could outrun one of their TIE Fighter candlesticks. Want to know how it did the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs? Fire is always a good source of motivation.

The fire pit measures 74 x 38 x 40cm (appx. 29.1″ x 15″ x 15.7″), and is welded together from durable 3mm mild steel. The design incorporates laser cut parts to give the ship lots of cool details, and its back section flips up to provide easy access to add and remove logs. I wonder if this how they work on the engines of the actual Millennium Falcon when they bring it in for service.

All this Star Wars craftsmanship doesn’t come cheap though. This unique fire pit is listed at over $1100 over on Burned by Design’s Etsy shop, and that doesn’t include the $200 or so it’ll cost to ship this thing over from the UK. If only they could ship it via hyperspace.

This TIE Fighter Fire Pit Has an Imperial Flame Job

When you see a TIE fighter on fire, it usually means it’s been hit by a Rebel ship and it’s about to explode into a massive fireball. But here’s one case where a flaming TIE fighter will last for a good long time. In fact, I’d love to have one of these TIE fighter fire pits to keep me warm on chilly nights.

The flaming TIE fighter was built by artist and tinkerer Simon Gould, who creates all kinds of unusual things in his UK workshop. Among them is a table made from the engine block from a Land Rover. While I think that’s swell, the TIE fighter with flames shooting out of its top is more my cup of tea. I like to picture this thing spiraling through a trench on the Death Star before coming in for a landing in my backyard.

If you’d like Simon to build you a flaming TIE fighter, or perhaps a flaming Land Rover engine block, you can hit him up with a private message on Facebook or Instagram.
