A Pencil Sharpener Inspired This Brilliant Camping Cutlery Tool

There are probably times when you’re in desperate need of chopsticks when you’re camping out or somewhere where you don’t have access to it. Well apparently now you’ll be able to make your own, as long as there are pieces of wood around you. I’ve seen a lot of clever camping gear over the years, but the Chopsticks Maker by Mario Tsai stopped me mid-scroll in a way most design objects don’t. It’s such a simple idea that you almost feel embarrassed for not thinking of it yourself.

The concept is exactly what it sounds like. The Chopsticks Maker is a miniature portable tool that lets you carve chopsticks out of twigs found at a campsite. You feed a stick into the device, turn it, and out comes a pair of chopsticks, shaped and ready to use. You eat your meal, leave the utensils on the ground, and they biodegrade. No waste, no washing up, no plastic rattling around at the bottom of your pack. Just a tiny tool, the forest floor, and dinner.

Designer: Mario Tsai

What makes the design particularly satisfying is where Tsai found his inspiration. The Chopsticks Maker is a direct reinterpretation of the humble pencil sharpener. That’s a beautiful design move. The pencil sharpener is one of those objects so ordinary it’s practically invisible, and yet its mechanics are perfectly suited to transforming a raw stick into something shaped and functional. Tsai took that overlooked tool and asked what else it could do. The answer turned out to be surprisingly elegant.

Tsai is a Shanghai-based industrial designer known for work that tends to be thoughtful rather than flashy. The Chopsticks Maker was presented at Milan Design Week 2026, where it appeared as part of a broader project exploring chopsticks as cultural objects. The project borrowed its guiding philosophy from the old proverb: give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. The Chopsticks Maker reframes that idea around something as basic as cutlery. You don’t need to pack utensils. You just need to know how to make them.

That principle, self-reliance through tools rather than stuff, is quietly radical in a market flooded with gear that promises to solve every outdoor problem by adding more weight to your bag. The best camping products I’ve come across are the ones that give you a skill or a method, not just a gadget. The Chopsticks Maker fits that description well. It’s lightweight, it requires nothing except whatever the ground around you offers, and the byproduct, the wood shavings, can even double as kindling for starting a fire. Someone spotted that in the comments when the project was shared online, and it’s the kind of observation that makes a well-considered object feel even more complete.

I’ll admit there’s a practical question hanging over it. Not every campsite offers the right kind of wood. Hardwood twigs will produce sturdier chopsticks; softer, pithy stems might not hold up mid-meal. And chopsticks do require some coordination. I can imagine plenty of people trying this out for the first time around a campfire and spending more time chasing noodles than eating them. But that’s also kind of the point, isn’t it? Part of what makes outdoor cooking memorable is the improvisation, the slight inconvenience, the small triumph of a meal made with whatever you had on hand.

The Chopsticks Maker doesn’t pretend to replace your fork. It offers a different relationship with the tools you eat with, one that’s rooted in resourcefulness rather than convenience. And at a moment when the outdoor industry keeps defaulting to titanium and synthetic and ultra-engineered everything, a device that points you back toward a tree branch feels like a genuine statement.

It also says something interesting about design itself. The best ideas don’t always come from inventing something new. Sometimes they come from looking at an object that’s been sitting on your desk since primary school and asking what it might become. Mario Tsai looked at a pencil sharpener and saw cutlery. That’s the kind of thinking that tends to produce work worth paying attention to.

The Most Advanced Camping Pillow of 2026 Looks Like It Grew in a Forest

Nature has been solving the problem of lightweight, load-bearing structure for hundreds of millions of years. Chen Xu, designing for RestBase, decided to take notes. The Camp Napper is a portable camping pillow whose form is derived from two specific biological sources: the surface texture of fungal spores, which informed the pillow’s contact face, and the hollow vascular structure of plant stems, which shaped its core. The outcome is a product that performs as well as it looks.

Using Voronoi polygon modelling, the design team mapped how pressure from a sleeping head distributes across the pillow’s surface, then engineered protrusions and recesses to respond to that data. The front face features raised cellular structures that increase the contact area between pillow and skin, improving comfort while simultaneously channelling airflow to keep things cool. The back face offers four distinct tactile zones depending on orientation, giving users a degree of customisation that is rare in camping gear. Also, a little warning but: trypophobia alert.

Designer: Chen Xu

The core replicates the hollow geometry found in plant stems, achieving a structure that sheds mass without compromising its ability to hold form under repeated compression. Total weight lands at around 400 grams, and the whole pillow compresses into its storage bag at roughly the dimensions of a water cup, making it genuinely packable rather than merely marketed as such.

Memory foam was selected for its ability to conform to different sleepers while maintaining the structural geometry of the bionic surface. Anti-slip rubber particles on the base keep the pillow in place across the varied surfaces camping tends to involve, from sleeping pads to camp chairs to hotel floors. RestBase positions the Camp Napper across indoor and outdoor contexts, and the material specification backs that up without demanding a different product for each one.

The project ran from March to December 2024 in Beijing, with the team conducting pressure simulations using volunteer data before building the mathematical model that generated the bionic surface structure. Mold development required continuous adjustment of material ratios and foaming parameters to meet yield and appearance standards. The finished product carries all of that process lightly, presenting as something organic and considered rather than laboured. For a category where most innovation stops at inflation valves and stuff sacks, that is a meaningful place to arrive.

Convenience of using a spring-laden, retracting knife and scissor-tong comb is camping essentials for all

Camping tools have gone through a serious transformation over the years. So much so that today you can cut down on how much you want to pack and still have all the essentials you will need at the camp. Case in point, the Camfy that is bringing an innovation to the camping knives, scissors, tongs, and a skewer holder to make this trend stronger.

Given what may, knives and scissors are considered two of the most essential tools you must have when you’re on an adventure or a trip to a campsite. Preparing a gourmet meal or sitting by the barbeque at the beach are part of every outdoorsy must but if you are not carrying the right gear, you are left wondering when the moment of truth arrives.

Designer: Subin Kim

That said, it’s not the selection of the right tools, in fact, the correct tools you are carrying should be safe and useful. If the knife for instance is not securely kept in the sheath it can cause serious injury when pulling out of the camping kit. Camfy has pulled out a unique knife from its repertoire to give campers a meaningful tool.

The camping knife is designed to retract back into its sheath immediately after use. A combination of a small knife and saw, this cleverly thought knife is created to prevent accidental incidents that can happen when the knife is not kept in the sheath after its use. It has an interesting spring mechanism triggered by a button. On the press of a button, the knife would spring back into the handle, which is also a sheath.

The compact and useful tool next in the Camfy design league is the scissor and tong unification. The wonderful idea marries the scissor with the tong at the end of the blade that can grip food, so it can be used in unison for cutting and grilling meat and other food.

The most enticing here on the list of tools is the skewer holder to facilitate grilling. Designed after the clothes pin, this brushed metal item has little holes in the top to hold the skewers over the fire to grill. Camfy has almost all the things you need on hand to create gourmet outdoor meals, but if there is anything else, we are sure the designer can rethink convenience and safety for the same.

This Japanese flat-pack fire pit sets up effortlessly and uses a dual combustion system to amplify heat

When I say campfire, it would evoke a different emotion in each one of us. Time for self, chat with friends, searing meat for dinner; everything besides an ignited fire pit. One thing that remains constant though is the usual fuss of igniting the fire, tending to it, and ensuring it burns with less smoke and more heat. Finally, there may be a flat-packed fire pit that wants to ensure setting up fire is a breeze and you can control intensity and ambiance, thanks to its customizable metal plank design.

The user-friendly UM Fire Pit is a product of Japanese craftsmanship and immaculate metalwork. The design is pretty straightforward: you have a round base, that collects ash and has air vents to help in combustion as wood burns in the pit. The pit comprises eight similar-sized laser-cut and bent sheets of metal, which vertically fasten into the dedicated grooves in the base. You can choose to use a few or all of the planks, depending on whether you want to watch the fire burn when you’re sitting alone outside your tent, or want to barbecue steak for family dinner at the park next to your RV.

Given its design, the UM Fire Pit disassembles and can fit – along with its grill grate – into the carrying bag the size of a laptop case. When you’re at the campsite, you can assemble the fire pit back up in under a minute and build an effective campfire with minimal hassle. Interestingly, the fire pit packed up for transportation weighs 13 lbs, so if you’re a backpacker, this may not be the best bet. But if you’re driving or riding into the wilderness, there cannot be a more utility fire pit companion for you.

Airflow

I say this not because the UM Fire Pit has a fancy design and appears trendy and everything. In fact, I base my argument on its dual combustion design. The air vents in the base generate airflow into the pit helping boost air circulation, which permits the wood to burn more efficiently with less smoke. The eight panels making an enclosed heat chamber create secondary combustion which allows the wood to burn well. A grill plate can be added to the top (covers half portion) of the vertically aligned planks to prepare a good, smoked meal made possible by the pit’s adjustable combustion system and optimized airflow.

And when you want more visibility of the fire and don’t want to use the grilling option, you can remove a few panels and create the balance of warmth and visibility you want. The ash collected in the base of the UM Fire Pit is easy clean up, while the corrosion-resistant stainless interior of the base and the metal planks assure durability and years of usage. The exterior black color of these panels exudes a rustic charm made possible with mill scale coating instead of paint. The fire pit is currently being crowdfunded, it has already reached the funding goal and should be in line with its estimated shipping time of January 2024. The UM Fire Pit will retail for $299 but is for now available at a discount of $225. The product is made and will be shipped from Japan, so overseas customers will have to bear shipping and customs fees.
