Otherworldly-Looking Origami-Inspired Lighting Fixture Seems To Suspend Mid-Air

Lighting designs today are truly innovative and unique, I mean you find all kinds of cool lighting designs out there! Today designers are creating unique, functional, and powerful pieces that not only light up a living space but also add an extra oomph factor! These lighting designs not only help you see in the dark, but they also function as an attractive and visually appealing piece. And, one such lighting design is Sora Light by Fung + Bedford for Frandsen.

Designer: Fung + Bedford for Frandsen

Designed by UK-based design duo Fung + Bedford, this statement light for the Danish brand Frandsen is inspired by the Japanese art of origami. As you look at it, you can see how widely and generously it has drawn on art the of origami. Called the Sora pendant light, it features a horizontal form and is artfully suspended between two cords, and flanked by wing-like intrusions, which gives the impression that it is floating in mid-air.

An LED strip light is embedded inside the bottom of the fixture, which allows it to radiate a soft and warm light. The subtle glow seems to spread across the lamp’s structure, which is crafted from tyvek – a paper-like and synthetic material produced from compressed fibers. Tyvek has been utilized since it is waterproof and features tear-proof characteristics. It is also a 100 percent recyclable material, according to the designers.

“A sculptural statement piece which appears to levitate in its surroundings, Sora exudes a serene, radiant aura whilst transcending the boundaries of traditional lighting design,” said Frandsen. And Sora truly has an almost other-worldly and ethereal look to it. It seems to suspend from the air, giving it a charming and floating quality. It can add an extra oomph factor, and loads of muted elegance to a living space, or even a commercial office space if you’re feeling experimenting.

Ethereal-Looking Lighting Design Celebrates “The Refractive Nature Of Crystal”

Lighting designs are plenty and not at all lacking, but a lighting design that is the perfect mix of functionality, personality, and good looks isn’t always easy to come by. And I’m always looking for well-designed lighting pieces that not only do their job of illumination but are also interesting little designs that spark conversations and elevate mundane living spaces. And this collection of table and wall lamps truly hit the spot! Called the Port range, this collection is designed by an Australian designer Tom Fereday in collaboration with the lighting brand Rakumba.

Designer: Tom Fereday x Rakumba

The Port Collection celebrates “the refractive nature of crystal”. It is the lovechild of the creative efforts of Tom Fereday and Rakumba, and the collection includes two shapes – the circular Round design, and the lozenge-shaped Stadium design. They both are available in tabletop or wall-mounted interactions. Each variant includes a solid glass block supported by a metal base. The glass block features an interesting conical shape with an internal stepped form. This intriguing form allows a subtle play with the refraction of light when switched on.

Since the block isn’t directly connected to the base, this block can be flipped over and also reset into the base, altering the manner in which the light is cast. “Port celebrates the purity and refractive nature of crystal,” said designer Tom Fereday. “Reversing the crystal form entirely changes the way the light is perceived, revealing Port’s unique dual character.” The Port collection beautifully captures and showcases the purity and characteristics of crystal. It takes the beauty of the material to a whole new level, allowing the material to take center place and grab attention without the need for any excessive bells and tassels.

The metallic base of the lighting design is available in a wide range of metallic finishes, so you can pick and choose the finish that perfectly suits the interiors of your living or working space. The Port lighting designs are versatile pieces that can be used in a variety of interiors – ranging from residential spaces to restaurants, making it a lighting piece that can find utility almost anywhere.

The Dune Lighting Fixture Adds A Desert-Inspired Luminaire To Your Home

Lighting designs are no longer boring and typically designed objects that simply add illumination to a living space. Today designers are creating unique, functional, and powerful pieces that not only light up a living space but also add an extra oomph factor! These lighting designs not only help you see in the dark, but they also function as an attractive and visually appealing piece. And, a lighting design that would be a wonderful and useful addition to your home is the Dune Light by Moss.

Designer: Moss

Inspired by the rolling sand formations, the Dune Light is a creation by German brand Moss. It consists of a stunning sculptural arrangement of aluminum shades that truly make the piece stand out. The various lights and shadows that are cast by the desert sand dunes were designer Daniel Becker’s inspiration for the beautiful Dune luminaire. Curved aluminum elements make up the body of the lighting fixture, and they both shield and reflect the light at different angles. They add an interesting design and visual element, adding layers and depth to the lighting fixture.

“Lined up next to each other, their dynamic curves and soft surfaces create an exciting landscape in any space,” said Moss. The Dune lighting design has an interesting modular form and is held together by thin metal connectors that organize the shades into the shape that is desired. Several shades can be connected, and they can be organized vertically, horizontally, or in different clusters.

Dune is designed to be packaged extremely compactly to reduce carbon emissions from transport. According to the brand, a three-metre-long fixture comes in a box smaller than standard hand luggage. The various shades can be crafted from high-quality aluminum which is satin-finished, and then anodized or polished. If you’re looking to add an expressive and symbolic lighting design that leaves a mark, and could be a great conversation starter, then the Dune luminaire is the one for you.

The Flaming Mini Light Is Designed To Capture & Portray The Poise & Elegance Of Its Namesake Bird

If you’ve recently done up your home, or are simply looking to rejuvenate your current interior decor, then you may want to consider adding a few bespoke and uplifting lighting designs. A beautifully designed lighting fixture can completely uplift and elevate a living space! A well-designed lighting fixture should not only be able to efficiently illuminate any living space but also add that extra oomph factor! I mean, of course, we need them to see in the dark, but as highly functional as they should be, a lighting fixture also needs to be aesthetically pleasing, adding an attractive and visually soothing element to your home or office space. And, a lighting design that would make a fitting addition to your home is the Flamingo Mini lighting by Antoni Arola for Vibia.

Designer: Antoni Arola for Vibia

Designed by Barcelona-based designer Antoni Arola for Vibia, the Flamingo Mini light is a deconstructed pendant light that utilizes polycarbonate diffusers to cast an ethereal and customizable glow. It was designed by Arola to capture and portray the poise, elegance, and grace of the bird after which it is named.

The Flamingo Mini light is made using a cylindrical LED light, which artfully hangs on stainless steel rods, and emits light through subtle layers of translucent polycarbonate diffusers. “Flamingo Mini’s delicate, deconstructed silhouette expresses a sense of extreme lightness,” said Vibia. “By separating the light source from the diffusers, light is projected onto each shade rather than surrounding the source, resulting in an ethereal, weightless effect.”

The polycarbonate diffusers are available in a variety of sizes and shapes, and they can be arranged to suit the proportions of the space they are placed in. The light source can be directed in an upward direction to create an ambient flow, or it can be pointed downwards to produce an intimate illumination – for example over a dining table. Flamingo Mini is a smaller version of the brand’s Flamingo product, and it is designed for smaller rooms with lower ceilings.

Compact & Cute Lamp That Fits All Environments Is A Miniaturized Version Of A 1970s Lamp

I have a soft spot in my heart for small yet sensational lighting designs that illuminate spaces with style and functionality. I truly believe a  well-designed lighting piece should not only have the ability to illuminate any living space but also add that extra oomph factor! I mean, of course, we need them to see in the dark, but as highly functional as they should be, a lighting fixture also needs to be aesthetically pleasing, adding an attractive and visually soothing element to your home or office space. And, one such cute and compact lighting design that I recently came across is the Lari Mini Lamp by Karakter.

Designer: Karakter

The Lari Mini Lamp is designed by Danish design brand Karakter, and it is the miniature and renewed version of a lamp that was originally designed by the late Italian architect and sculptor Angelo Mangiarotti in 1978. Much like the original Lari, this mini lamp features a rounded-square silhouette, amped by a ribbed central section that is constructed from hand-blown glass. The lamp has a rather distinctive and unique shape that is quite difficult to miss!

The little lamp consists of a glass volume made up of two bulbs that emit a warm white glow. The two bulbs are placed against a black oval-shaped base, creating a geometrically interesting piece. The Lari Mini lamp was designed to be more practical, functional, and accessible than the original full-sized lighting design, building a piece that is easier to use and place in your home. The lamp is rechargeable via USV-C cable, offering 12 hours of illumination once fully charged.

“Mangiarotti had a very specific approach to lighting,” said Christian Elving, co-founder and CEO of Karakter. “His designs seem to constantly play with the balance between soft sensuousness and robust practicality.”

The thoughtfully designed Lari Mini Lamp is quite versatile, and it was designed for domestic, mixed-use, and hospitality environments. You can truly place it anywhere – from cozy and comfy reading corners in your home to dining tables at elegant restaurants. The Lari Mini Lamp is created to find its place and spot in all kinds of environments.

The Chapeaux Light Manages To Disappear From Sight While Grabbing Your Attention

Lighting designs are no longer boring little pieces that simply illuminate your home, without adding any oomph to it. They’re not simply typically designed objects but are in fact well-designed lighting fixtures that add some sparkle and personality to your home while lighting it up. I mean, of course, they need to be functional and practical, but they also need to have some aesthetic and visual appeal. And a unique lighting design that I would recommend for your home is the Chapeaux Light!

Designer: Rodolfo Dordoni for Foscarini

Designed by the late Rodolfo Dordoni, the Chapeaux Table Lamp is deemed worthy to be part of a magic show. Produced by Foscarini, the Chapeaux Table Lamp is an enchanting and captivating lighting fixture that will grab your attention with its unique design that is built using three main parts. One of the focal features of the lamp is the transparent pyrex body which is accentuated with a cylindrical steam that widens up at both ends. The bottom section supports and stabilizes the lamp while the top embraces the hat diffuser. Once the lamp is switched on, the entire body is highlighted with pretty subtle reflections.

The second element of the lamp which is also pretty interesting is the floating light source. The floating light source was specially created by Foscarini, ensuring that it subtly conceals all the technical bits, while also providing the lamp with a simple and m minimal form. The lamp also includes a freely placed hat, which lends the design its name. The hat is placed without interlocks, and putting all these components together, it almost seems as if the lamp disappears mysteriously while also grabbing your attention.

The Chapeaux Lamp is available in three varied configurations. The most minimal design is the Chapeaux M, which features a hat reflector in metal, making it a great fit for workspaces. The Chapeaux V features coated blown glass which produces warm ambient lighting. The third configuration is the Chapeaux P which includes a bone china hat that filters light, providing the design with a subtle and delicate illumination.

Brutalist-inspired stunning tabletop lamp is the perfect addition to your bedside table

I love a beautifully-designed lighting fixture because I truly believe a really great one has the ability to illuminate a space – both literally, and metaphorically. Besides the physical light that it quite obviously emits, a well-designed lighting fixture can add manifolds of personality and charisma to a room. They can function as sculptural pieces, that are an extension of your personal taste and preference, truly exhibiting the richness and niche-ness of your curation capabilities. And one such stunning lighting design I recently laid eyes upon is the Vestige Lamp.

Designer: Ross Gardam

Australian designer Ross Gardam drew heavy inspiration from Brutalist design and created the Vestige lamp. The eccentric yet stunning-looking lamp is composed of blocky geometric shapes that have been made from cast crystal glass. The lamp was created as the result of a collaboration between the brand Ross Gardam and artist Peter Kovacsy, whose sculptural work is inspired by the remote wilderness of Western Australia.

The Vestige lamp features a simple silhouette that has been created from an upright rectangular block that has been merged with a hemispherical shape, which brings to mind the image of Brutalist architecture. Bubbles in the glass provide a speckled texture when illuminated – this is an attempt to celebrate the lamp’s unique materiality.

“Intentionally ambiguous, the brutalist-inspired sculptural form reveals its archetype when illuminated,” said Ross Gardam. “Vestige celebrates the allure, texture, and volume of glass.” The Vestige lamp was designed for tabletop use, so it’d make a great addition to your workdesk or the side table next to your bed. The exquisite lamp comes in one translucent finish and is mounted onto a raw aluminum base that is accompanied by a cone-shaped dinner. Overall, the lamp has a rather geometrically intriguing form with a translucent and ethereal aesthetic that gives it that extra oomph factor. The Vestige lamp is probably one of the prettiest lamps I’ve seen in a while, and truly believe would make an excellent addition to anyone’s home. “The cast glass is maximized in scale and volume amplifying the radiance. This unique table lamp uses the delicacy of lit cast glass to not only astound but to create a small moment in time for wonder,” the studio concluded.

Air Light is a sustainable + recyclable lighting fixture designed to add an element of elegance to your home

And if they manage to be sustainable as well, then they’re a design curated in heaven. And a lighting design that meets all of these criteria is the Air Light.

Designer: Contardi Lighting x Adam Tihany

Italian brand Contardi Lighting partnered up with designer Adam Tihany to answer a simple yet rather complex question, ” What is green lighting?” The answer to their question was their creation Air – a newly designed suspension lamp that is 100% recyclable, functional, and also extremely decorative. The Air light is a physical manifestation of the exploration of ecological and design values. It features a dual lampshade design, that has the ability to produce a warm and inviting ambience which creates an amusing play between light and shadow, using its engraved laser cuts.

Throughout the entire process, from designing to production, considerable efforts were made to reduce Air’s impact on the environment. The light is made from Green Cast – an acrylic material that can be 100% recycled and recycles industrial waste and end-of-life products. Irrespective of how many cycles for which Green Cast has been utilized, it manages to retain and maintain its mechanical and thermal qualities, as well as aesthetics. Contardi lighting also applies the cream-colored finish of the lamp while it is being produced, in turn eliminating the lacquering phase, and reducing the lamp’s adversarial impact on the environment.

The Air light has an almost sculptural and ethereal feel to it. As you look closer at it, you feel that the lamp is floating both upwards and downwards, creating an intriguing visual illusion. The upper and lower LED lights emit a full glow, creating a warm, cozy, and peaceful aura in any room it is placed in.

This curvy + stumpy outdoor lighting design aims to reduce light pollution on a Danish island

The Island of Møn in Southern Denmark is a certified Dark Sky Community. Now, what is a Dark Sky Community? A Dark Sky Community is a town, city, or community that is exceptionally dedicated to preserving the night sky through various means – such as quality outdoor lighting ordinance, dark sky education, and citizen support of dark skies. The Island of Møn is a famous place for stargazing and is thereby required to maintain extremely low levels of light pollution. And designer Peter Bysted and Danish lighting company Icono have specially designed a light for the island!

Designer: Peter Bysted and Icono

Called Stump, the lighting design is a sturdy light designed to illuminate and light up the outside areas of the Island of Møn. The light was designed specially to combat and reduce light pollution. Featuring the shape of a bollard, the lighting design features an oxidized cast iron body and a transparent cap. The transparent cap includes a warm-toned and low-energy lighting fixture that emits a soft and radiant light when it is being utilized.

The stocky and sturdy base of the light casts interesting and playful shadows throughout the day, while its imposing structure can be used as a stool for people to lean on. So you can either get some support from Stump, or you can look at the sunlight striking against the design’s curvy and organic shape. “Stump’s emission of light is non-blinding and dedicated to illuminating parks and paths – just enough to ensure safety,” said Icono. So, Stump successfully illuminates the space it is placed in while ensuring it doesn’t cause any kind of light pollution.

It was designed to blend harmoniously with the outdoors and work well in both private and public outdoor spaces. It is excellent for providing light on pathways. Bysted designed Stump to reinforce the space it is placed in, rather than dominating it. It is meant to create a context with the environment. Stump Bollard won the “Best Outdoor Lighting of the Year” at the 2022 Prize Designs for Modern Furniture + Lighting from Global Design News and The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design.
