Rocking chair with a built-in swing may just be the most playful seating experience I’ve seen

The only thing it really needs is an ice cream dispenser to fulfill every single childhood fantasy of mine…

Meet the Swing Seat, a chair with a kinesthetic experience that gives you the feeling of sitting on a swing on the playground. The chair sports both a swinging seat and a rocking base, which combine together to create a unique experience that’s quite unlike sitting on a regular rocking chair. “The resulting dual action of this mechanism creates a back-and-forth gliding sensation, like a swing in motion”, says designer Joe Parr.

Designer: Joe Parr

The Swing Seat challenges the instinctive reaction to lounge or relax on a reclining chair when fatigued. It’s something adults do frequently, but it isn’t what instinctively comes to children. Instead of retiring to a sofa or recliner, children are more driven to the idea of ‘recess’, or of playing and stimulating themselves to reduce fatigue and stress. The Swing Seat brings that interaction back to adults, giving them the ability to rejuvenate their senses while staying seated and alert. “When I discovered how motion added excitement the experience for the sitter, I began to understand the power of the mind and body connection”, Parr mentioned.

The Swing Seat comprises a bent metal-pipe frame with a rocking base, and a leather hammock-style seat attached to the sides of the frame, giving you a chair that simultaneously swings as well as rocks to and fro. Combine the two and they sort of add up to create a sense of thrill without the space requirements of a playground swing!

This kinetic sculpture encompasses a mother and child’s bond – Watch the video!

The Bruno’s Swing is a tribute to and a celebration of the joys of motherhood! Designed by Federica Sala after the birth of her son, the swing practically becomes a kinetic sculpture and an icon of the love a mother has for her child.

“I had recently stopped swinging Bruno in my arms because he had become too heavy, but I still had that feeling: it was a wonderful sensation and I wanted to keep it”, says Federica. With Bruno’s Swing, the child sits within a heart-shaped seat, suspended from a bent-metal frame that’s styled to look like a mother. When the child swings, it almost looks as if the heart is beating with the child within it, creating a wonderful metaphor for motherly love! “It is difficult to keep the sensations: at the moment they seem unforgettable, but then many others come along and it is difficult to feel them again. This work is for Bruno to enjoy, but it is above all a ‘memorandum’ for me of this moment in which I felt like that, a strong woman, very close to her son, very much alive, with a heart that was pounding for this union.”

Being an only child, I have grown up being the only one who received all the attention from my parents. So I’m sure this sentiment is echoed heavily in my mother’s heart – the constant tug of war to hold onto her child tight and catch those moments before I grow up.

Furniture for Fashionistas

swing_coat_stand_layout

For many people, fashion isn’t just the clothes they put on their back. It’s art they wear to express themselves. Designed with all those fashionistas in mind, the Swing coat rack is one worthy of hanging and displaying your wearable works of art.

Its neat, elegant aesthetic is the result of CNC cutting, handcrafting, and seamless joinery. The sculptural piece is right at home in any dressing room, closet or even an entryway. A dapper departure from the utilitarian look of metal coat racks, it’s also ideal for expanding the limited closet space of compact living quarters in a stylish way.

Sometimes a drone, sometimes a plane!

When you can’t choose between a drone and a plane, get both! The Parrot’s Swing drone is a pretty nifty piece of design and engineering. It looks like an unsuspecting quadcopter with four black polystyrene wings, but these wings help it turn into a plane, getting it to fly at speeds much higher than conventional drones. It does so by tilting over and thus becoming like a plane with front-facing propellers, as opposed to the vertical propellers of a quad-copter.

Flying the Swing is indeed an adrenaline rush because it tips over, transforming into a supersonic jet of sorts, allowing it to fly at pretty marvelous speeds. When you slow down, it immediately retakes its vertical position and becomes a drone again! The Swing comes with its own Flypad, a joypad that allows you to mount your phone on it. With the Parrot app, you can control the Swing while also seeing data like flight time and battery levels. To make operating the Swing even more of a dream, it comes with an auto-takeoff and auto-landing feature, taking the complexity out of the drone’s operation so you can truly enjoy flying this quadcopter/jet hybrid in the sky!

Skydivers Play on the Ultimate Swing

Skydivers are pretty fearless. I mean, what is left to be scared of after falling toward the Earth from insane heights. So naturally, skydivers are looking for new cool stuff to do up there. Like swing on a giant swing suspended between two hot air balloons.

Marco Fuerst performs the Megaswing over the Waldviertel area, Austria on July 7th 2016

This stunt, courtesy of Red Bull, took four skydivers, two hot air balloons, a 400 foot-long rope with a seat on the end, and a climb to about 6,000 feet in a hot air balloon. They call it the MEGA SWING. It is basically every kid’s dream, who has ever swung on a swing at the playground.

I don’t think anyone is going to beat this swinging record unless they go to the edge of space. Care to give it a try, Felix Baumgartner?

Colin Furze Builds 360 Swing as Tall as His House

Remember when you were a kid and you would try to swing over the bar? Well, since Colin Furze never grew up, he’s fulfilling his childhood fantasy at a terrifying scale. Safety equipment? Who needs that?

colin_furze_1zoom in

The the apex of the swing is about 31 feet high, and the A-frame supports of this counterweighted swing are as tall as Furze’s Lincolnshire, UK home. Watch him do his thing and try not to wince.

This is just further proof that Colin is crazy, but you have to admire his tenacity and bravery. He could easily fall from over two stories up there.  One of these days, I’m afraid he is going to hurt himself with one of his builds, but it sure is fun to watch him do his thing.

If you think this was nuts, Colin indicates at the end of the video that he might add some power to the rig. 360º jetpack swing, anyone?

Polaroid’s mobile photo app is all about moving snapshots

To say that Polaroid missed the boat on mobile photography apps would be an understatement. The original Instagram logo was based on a Polaroid camera, and the company's main answer was to build a camera that looked like that logo. However, it's re...
