Yiayia Transformable Bag by Sophia Lampropoulou

I’ve always been a big-bag person. When I head out for the day, I want something that can hold my wallet, a paperback, snacks, and at least two things I didn’t plan on bringing along. But every once in a while, I want to switch things up and carry something small for fashion’s sake instead. The catch is that most tiny bags look adorable and hold absolutely nothing. The Yiayia Transformable Bag by Sophia Lampropoulou seems to check every box on my list, and it comes with a heartwarming story about family and cultural preservation as a bonus.

The bag is built around an authentic Cretan embroidery pattern that the Greek designer’s grandmother originally stitched by hand. This textile art, passed down through generations, became the conceptual and visual foundation of the entire piece. Yiayia isn’t just “inspired by” Greek culture in some vague, marketing-friendly way. It’s a genuine family heirloom translated into something you can wear, carry, and maybe even use as a conversation starter with strangers who ask where you got it.

Designer: Sophia Lampropoulou (3D Season)

Here’s where things get interesting from a design standpoint. Lampropoulou didn’t just print her grandmother’s embroidery onto a flat surface and call it a day. She digitized the pattern and rebuilt it as a flexible, modular 3D printed surface using TPU, a stretchy, durable material that behaves a lot like textile while holding its shape better than fabric alone.

The genius move is that the pattern isn’t decorative, it’s structural. The geometry of the embroidery actually determines how the bag flexes, how weight gets distributed, and how it holds together. In other words, her grandmother’s stitching is the bag’s skeleton, not just its skin. Using a set of metal rings, that TPU surface folds and reconfigures into four different carrying styles, so the same bag can go from a compact crossbody to a slouchier shoulder bag depending on your mood or outfit. The whole process blended cultural research with parametric design software and additive manufacturing, which is a fancy way of saying Lampropoulou used cutting edge tools to keep a centuries old craft alive instead of letting it fade into a museum display.

The design world has taken notice, too. Yiayia won a Silver Award at the London Design Awards 2025 in the Fashion Design, Bags category, and it later picked up a Bronze A’ Design Award in the Fashion and Travel Accessories category.

If you’re picturing a shape-shifting bag and thinking of Bao Bao Issey Miyake, you’re not far off. That Japanese brand built an entire cult following around bags made of triangular panels that transform from flat pieces into geometric 3D shapes as you fill them, with prices typically landing between $400 and $480. Bao Bao’s magic is in its “shapes made by chance” concept, where the structure reacts to however you toss things inside it.

Yiayia takes a similar love of geometry and structural transformation but flips the intention. Instead of triangles chosen purely for eye-catching architecture, Yiayia’s pattern is a literal, traceable piece of one family’s history, and its four configurations are deliberate design choices rather than random shifts. Where Bao Bao is about engineered unpredictability, Yiayia is about engineered memory. For someone like me who wants a small bag with an actual story behind it, not just a cool silhouette, that distinction matters.

For big-bag loyalists like me, the real issue with tiny bags has never been the size, it’s the lack of personality and practicality packed into that size. Yiayia solves both problems at once. Its four-way transformation means one bag adapts to different outfits and occasions instead of sitting in a closet as a one-trick accessory. And because the design carries genuine cultural weight, it feels less like a passing trend and more like something worth holding onto.

At the end of the day, Yiayia proves that a small bag doesn’t have to be a compromise. It can be clever, sentimental, and still pull double duty when you need it to. If this is any indication of what Sophia Lampropoulou and her studio, 3D Season, have in store next, I’ll be keeping a close eye on her work, and probably saving up for one of her bags along the way.
