Analogue joysticks for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 turn the folding smartphone into a Game Boy

The Red Dot Design Concept Award-winning case for the Galaxy Z Flip4 takes the folding phone and turns it into the world’s first gaming foldable. Cleverly designed with joysticks and controls that tuck within each other when folded, this Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 accessory still lets you use the phone as is, retaining all its smartphone functionality, albeit with a rather sizeable gaming upgrade!

Designers: Park Sungsu & Jeong Hyeonsook

Designed to turn your folding phone into a console when opened, the ‘Gaming Flex’ is a nifty piece of hardware that also doubles as a smartphone case. Just snap it on and you’ve got what one can only describe as the world’s first folding Nintendo Switch Lite. In its now-folded avatar, the Gaming Flex also becomes the most compact gaming console of its kind… offering the ability to play AAA titles on your phone while being smaller than any official Game Boy ever made.

Perhaps my favorite detail on the Gaming Flex is its yin-yang joystick design. The joysticks protrude outwards for better tactile control, but to make up for the fact that the device needs to fold shut, the D-Pad comes with a hollow design, allowing the joystick to dock right in when shut. It’s a clever detail that isn’t just functional, it’s ergonomic too, offering the perfect concavity for your thumb to rest in as you game!

The Gaming Flex is a winner of the Red Dot Design Concept Award for the year 2022.

Inspired by Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung Flipbook has a secondary display to interact with the laptop without opening it

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, over the three generations, hasn’t made the market invasion like the Korean giant would have expected. Nevertheless, it is a niche smartphone and anyone who uses can swear by its inventiveness. The standout here is the secondary display that provides a quick glance at the notifications and more without having to flip the phone over. This feature is not just phone-centric for God’s sake; a designer thinks the laptops deserve a small screen on the outside for the purpose best told by the Galaxy Z Flip.

This is how the enticing Flipbook for Samsung has been idealized by hyeonseok Kang, who not long ago had us in awe with The Suitcase for the camping enthusiasts. At the first glance, the Flipbook draws a clearer resemblance to a MacBook than swaying in the Samsung design corridors. That said, it certainly has a point to make with what it brings to the table. It not the ordinary touch bar on the Apple laptop, it’s a sheen display right below the screen, which is also visible when the lid is flipped closed; thanks to the cut out in the lid between the two hinges holding it firm against the keyboard unit.

Designer: Hyeonseok Kang

As Kang puts and we reciprocate, “Flipbook shares a design language with Samsung’s Flip” – the screen cut out on the front displays message notifications, battery life, media controls, news updates, and more information without the user having to open the laptop. Convenience unparalleled for the hybrid workforce that can, with just a glance at the secondary display, know when to flip open the laptop to jump onto a zoom call or ignore an unnecessary login.

Making it slightly more Samsung friendly, the Flipbook arrives with a Bixby launch button built right into the keyboard, as a way to eliminate Windows from the equation. The panel here is complete with a nice big aluminum trackpad and two speaker grills running horizontally on either side of the keyboard. Since accidental touches on the interactive secondary display bar are a given; the designer has integrated a toggle button on the side, alongside the connectivity ports, which can lock up the display just as you can on the smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 Pokemon Edition and collectible accessories launched

When something is mass-produced, it is always wise for a brand to release limited versions or collectibles. They improve the chance of a company to increase sales because of the novelty and uniqueness of an object.

For Samsung, it doesn’t really need to do much to increase sales and revenue, but it always comes up with special editions of its premium flagship devices. The latest offering is for the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and for fans of Pokemon. Young and old alike who can’t get enough of the little pocket monsters will take delight in this particular version of the foldable phone.

Designer: Samsung

The Pokemon Edition of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 also comes with special accessories, including a Clear Cover With Ring, Pokemon Palette, Pikachu Keychain, Monster Ball 3D Grip Talk, and a Pokemon Book Cover Leather Pouch. In addition, stickers of popular Pokemons are also available as part of a set.

The special edition offering has just been launched this week in South Korea. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 Pokemon Edition is listed with a KRW 1,284,000 price tag which is about $1,025. You can purchase online on the Samsung website, the Galaxy Campus Store, or 11th Street. If you buy from the South Korean tech giant’s online store, your purchase will come with a free one-year Samsung Care+. The brand’s special damage protection plan may be helpful when the phone is damaged or defective.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 Pokemon Collectibles

Samsung has been doing more collaborations recently with different brands and designers. The Samsung Galaxy x Sean Wotherspoon Sustainable Accessories Collection was made especially for the Galaxy S21 and the Galaxy Watch 4. There was also the major collab with American fashion designer Thom Browne in recent years, plus the limited-edition Z Flip Pocket Denims.

More collaborations are expected to be unveiled by Samsung. So far, we know it has worked with some 40 brands to come up with special Galaxy Z Flip 3 accessories. So the Pokemon series definitely won’t be the last from the tech company.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 is an exciting product line because of its foldable form. Samsung has already released several generations of foldable phones. Every release becomes exciting, thanks to the limited edition and collectible items.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 Pokemon Release

The foldable phone has also been a favorite for concept designs. We remember Spinelli’s rendition of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip with Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons. When the first Galaxy Z Flip was launched, Samsung also released a two-part case for the foldable phone.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip with Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons is the crossover we didn’t know we needed

Echoing an aesthetic that’ll remind some of the Nintendo DS, this unique fan-made hybrid is taking Reddit by storm. Designed and built by Reddit user Mike Dubbz, it features a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip running a Nintendo Switch emulator but more notably, also comes with Switch Joy-Cons attached to each side of the device. Made possible thanks to a small 3D-printed module that allows you to mount all three parts together into a single unit, this ‘Frankenstein monster’ of the tech world is simultaneously weird and wonderful.

Designer: MikeDubbz

The build is rather simple (unlike this extremely surgical project that turned GameCube controllers into Joy-Cons) – it merely features a single 3D-printed holder that unites the two Joy-Cons with the Z Flip. Mike mentions in his Reddit thread that the Joy-Cons also didn’t need major configuring since they simply paired with the Z Flip using Bluetooth (the phone treated the two controllers as two halves of one single controller), and the emulator (DraStic, in this case) even mapped the controls out perfectly.

If you’ve got a Galaxy Z Flip and some Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons lying around, you’re in luck, because MikeDubbz is selling his unique intermediary 3D-printed module on Etsy for people to buy and use. Mike offers variants based on whether you’ve got the original Z Flip or the newer (and slightly thicker) Z Flip 3. The module also works with third-party Joy-Cons too, although Mike recommends using the originals. Sheer genius, eh??
