Space-saving perching seat encourages you to linger but not stay for long

We all need to catch our breaths sometimes, whether to pause after a long walk or to give our arms a rest after carrying a lot of stuff. Sometimes, we might also want to sit a bit while waiting for someone or for some event but the area doesn’t have chairs or even enough space for such furniture. In these scenarios, sitting down might bring a bit of relief, but getting back up again can turn out to be more trouble than it’s worth. The ideal solution would be something that lets you rest your body just a little bit without actually going into a deeper resting state, something that perching seats are made for. This particular design, however, takes that idea even further by offering the bare minimum in style and comfort without taking up too much space and effort to use.

Designer: Addi

Chairs are designed to provide stability and comfort, taking you into their embrace so that you might not even want to get up anymore. That’s great if you’re at home or in a lounge and have plenty of time to really relax, not so much if you’re waiting for an appointment or taking a brief reprieve from a meeting. This specific need calls for a seat that encourages both rest and movement at the same time, a dichotomy that Lumber fully embraces in its similarly contrasting design elements, like a fallen tree trunk in a forest that you briefly sit on before the next leg of your journey.

At first glance, you might not even think that Lumber would be something you should sit on, much less comfortable to use. It is, however, truly designed for comfort and convenience, especially with its flame-proof wool upholstery that can be easily removed for cleaning, replacing, or exchanging. Each Lumber perching seat is color-matched, with powder-coated metal legs in deep burgundy, latte, forest green, dusty blue, and black. A side table rises from one leg on one side, a place for your stuff, vases, drinkware, and more.

Despite its comfortable materials and stable structure, Lumber’s form suggests movement and activity. That’s no surprise, really, considering its design is inspired by a woodworker’s sawhorse, which is also the reason behind its name. Just like that piece of work furniture, Lumber is pretty barebones, which makes it take up less space. You can try fitting quite a number of these in a room and still have plenty of space to move around. Or you can opt for the Lumber Wall design that can be mounted on a wall to free up even more floor space.

Lumber was designed for lingering and loitering, encouraging you to sit for a while without committing to resting completely. It also makes for an interesting artsy piece that inspires both conversation as well as playful interactions. All these while minimizing not just its physical footprint but also material and packaging, thanks to a design that is inherently both restful yet also dynamic, embracing a spirit of journey even in its manufacturing and product lifecycle.

This space-saving foldable heater is as cool as your Xbox Series S

A compact heater crafted for individuals who are fed up with the bulky and impractical design of static heaters that beam heat only in one position. This highly maneuverable heater is different from those traditional ones in all respects though!

Winters brings with it chilling cold and consequently, and out come the good old heaters to neutralize things. While heaters solve the intended purpose, they don’t always look as good as modern radiators. Nor are they as compact and handy as some other appliances. Therefore, I’m always left with the unsatisfied craving for an ultra-compact heater that looks good, does the task and simply vanishes away when the winters offset. Have a look at this compact folding heater that superimposes right over what I and for that matter, many of you out there keep longing for in the winter season.

Designers: Wenhua Xu and 托迪 设计

Like a tripod it can be set at any angle and height, fulfilling the user’s requirements without any hassles. It is designed like a folding lamp that can be kept even in the cabinet drawer when not required. Yes, the design is such that it folds into itself, making it very easy to carry in hand or backpack with you. This is an important feature, especially for people who travel a lot in colder regions, and prefer to have their own heating solutions.

Aesthetically the Folding Heater (yes, that’s what it is called) is ideal for modern homes and studio apartments. The appealing form factor will appeal to the young crowd who normally debunk things just for their looks. It’s just like carrying the cool Xbox Series S for style statement per se. Operating the heater is as simple as it can get. The touch-sensitive round display shows the real-time temperature and on either side are the buttons to toggle temperature. On the top, the heater displays the time and on the bottom is the On/Off toggle button.

There’s not much to say here, as the design explains for itself and does what it is intended to do in a cute way. I would definitely like this compact folding heater in my arsenal of geeky possessions, it’s that cool. How about you?

This versatile furniture concept features a sliding grid system that saves and creates space!

Square to Square is a versatile furniture system for the modern home built on an internal and external sliding grid mechanism to save and create space.

Squares are known for the versatile nature of their shapes. It’s said that Le Corbusier saw squares as “the most refined and pure form in nature,” as young designer Kyungseon Nam puts it. Setting out to design a furniture system concept based on the multidimensionality of the square, Nam developed Square to Square.

Initially structured as a solid block, functional as a table or ottoman, Square to Square can turn into a full dining table or workspace setup. Built around an internal sliding grid system, Square to Square transforms from one configuration to the next with seamless transitions.

Square to Square’s initial form is divided between four quadrants that contain their own internal sliding grid system with hidden pull-out shelves and integrated cushioned booths. Positioned on top of an external sliding grid system, the hidden booth components of Square to Square can be pulled from each quadrant to reveal a four-person dining table setup.

Then, from each corner booth, a lower cushioned shelf can be pulled out to provide a resting place for your pets or even your feet. Each quadrant also contains spring mechanics that unload an elevated desk space that could function as a standing desk or raised shelf. Underneath the spring-loaded desk space, Nam incorporated a storage compartment where goods can be stored even when the optional desk space isn’t raised.

Taking advantage of the square’s chameleonic creative possibilities, Nam was able to conceptualize a multifunctional furniture system that not only saves space but creates space. Transforming from a solid, blank cube into a live-and-work space that also doubles as a dining area, Square to Square is the versatile and space-saving furniture system for the modern home.

This space-saving exercise bike doubles as a functional yet stylish piece of furniture

An exercise bike that doesn’t just take up space when not in use – rather performs double duty as a piece of furniture for urban dwellers who find themselves constricted for space. Ones who are always on the lookout for multifunctional accessories.

How often have we all given in to the unrelenting urge of buying a piece of exercise equipment impulsively and then, later on, have it on the sidelines biting the dust? A catch twenty-two situation that fills you with guilt and anxiety every time you see the exercise bike put to no alternate use other than hanging your clothes in a haphazard manner. How about at least utilizing it for another good purpose, if you want to dissolve the guilt of slashing out money just for no use?

Meet “The-O” exercise bike designed to be minimalistic, sans all the fancy features you’ll never end up using in your daily fitness routine. The fitness accessory is designed keeping in mind the quirks of owning one. First up is the space requirement and the non-flexibility of usage. Then there is the complexity of use which mars the whole purpose of a simple fitness regime. The-O has none of them, and it doubles as a functional piece of furniture when your fitness is kept on hold for some days or even weeks. Use it as a seat for your casual work regime or turn it into a bar chair for parties – the options are endless. You can even turn it into a base for keeping indoor plants.

This exercise bike breaks the norms of how exercise equipment needs to be and brings a dimension of modularity to it. The fitness equipment comes in two different sizes – giving apartment dwellers the option to go for a smaller size if living space is at a premium. I personally like the idea of exercising my legs while browsing the internet – isn’t that cool enough?

This folding chair is inspired by origami and can be literally hung like clothes on a hanger!

Chair designs are the first category designers are told to explore because it is simple and yet the smallest of tweaks can make it innovative. Also, let’s accept it – you never get tired of looking at new chair designs! It could be a new material, a bold shape, maybe it has a dual purpose or something like KERF – a space-saving chair that you can literally hang up like clothing!

It can be called a stool or a chair, but KERF gives the otherwise rigid object warmth and flexibility. You can literally put it on a hanger and store it like clothing in a wardrobe which makes it stand out from its counterparts. When needed, simply open the fold and you can get a setup ready for your guests in a few seconds.

The intention was to enrich plywood, make it flexible and fold it like it was paper for origami art. KERF has been designed for small living spaces and for practicality, it is perfect for those living in urban apartments or shared spaces. It reminds me of Japandi style furniture or Scandinavian home decor with its warm and minimal aesthetics.

The unique chair gets its name from the technique of kerfing – it is the method of bending plywood by patterned cutting. It is only good for doing it once to achieve the desired curvature, but not suitable for repetitive, long-term bending because that would cause the veneer layer to crack. The kerfing technique can be optimized for the CNC milling process to save production time and cost.

The mood board for the project shows bending plywood with kerfing, flat-pack laser cut furniture, folding chairs, and interlocking leather belts – all of these come together in the final design as details. The chair us.es kerfing, the hinges are made from leather, it can be compactly packed and it has an origami-like silhoutte.

To make sure it was durable yet flexible, Hamza decided to use thick leather instead of hinges. This detail lets KERF withstand repetitive bending cycles while the alternative hinge (leather) can outlast the traditional hinge making it a piece of furniture that stays with you in the long run (its moving-friendly too!). KERF is definitely a wonderful example of how chairs can be simple while still adding on to the existing form and function!

This rug doubles up as seating – we can’t get enough it’s transforming furniture design!

Who isn’t fascinated by transforming furniture designs? I love watching how furniture can serve multiple purposes by simple actions like a pull of a string or folding of a flap. My latest love in the realm of (furniture) transformers is FLUP – a multifunctional furniture piece that is both a rug and a seat! Furniture designs like FLUP are perfect for smaller living spaces, especially with the growing tiny house movement.

In the unfolded position, FLUP works like a conventional mat or rug on which we can sit or step without interrupting the movement of people through the space. It transforms from plane to volume, from floor to space while changing the function with its shape. In the folded position, it works as a piece of minimal furniture – it can be used as a pouf, an auxiliary seat, a footrest, a nightstand, etc.

flup1

It is a perfect example of space-saving furniture. What makes it better is that there is no assembly required, it is a singular element that transforms with folds into another object like origami. With micro-apartments and being the new trend, flexible and lightweight furniture designs like FLUP are super handy. It is minimal, multifunctional and can be flat-packed for storage – there is no reason to not love FLUP!

Space saving products designed for the tiny millennial homes!

Our homes may be small or big, but there are things that have to be a part of every home. They are simply irreplaceable. Take for example a ladder, a couch, or even a dishwasher – each of these traditional products are essential but take up space that we just can’t afford to spare with the new-age tiny homes. Well, these products are here to ride to your rescue. Each design here takes a non-traditional and space-saving approach to transform products for the modern millennial era!

Created by designer Ekaterina Shchetina, Fluidity serves a double function. A comely white dish rack by day, the multipurpose dish rack has an alter ego; it serves as a planter, or to be precise there are two built-in planters on its sides. Fluidity is designed in such a way that the run-off water from the freshly washed dishes trickles down to the roots of the plants, irrigating and nourishing them.

The Y hanger by Monoco is a beautiful example of how materials can be manipulated to create a folding object. Using the tension in the thread to hold the shape of the hanger, the subtleness of this product is inherently Japanese.

The Tadafusa Factory Showroom, created by Yusuke Seki, uses a minimal shelving patter that has us falling in love. Primarily created to display the hand-forged precision knives made by this renowned manufacturer, I can truly imagine this setting in a home, creating shelf space when needed or doubling up as a textural backdrop to accent any room.

Simple and functional, the Daily Roller created by George and Willy is a wall-mounted solution for all those who love to take notes/ scribble as well as brainstorm on paper! Roll it up when not in use, tear and save the ideas you need. Who needs a table anymore?

Practically a hallmark of simplicity and effectiveness, the Sho by Pan Biwei is made of literally two parts – a frame and a mattress. However, it can exist in three states. As a bed (with the mattress used as-is), as a comfortable chair, and as a reclining lounge chair.

The folding corner ladder by Company And Company allows us to have an essential product to be a part of our home in a restricted space. With its folding design, the ladder goes down to a quarter of its space, letting you store the ladder conveniently when not in use.

The best implementation of product design is when the product simplifies an everyday woe. The Wood Yarn Bowl by Twig and Horn saves your wool from running off the edge of the sofa and unraveling all over the place while making an interesting storage solution!

Winner of the iF Student Design Award 2016, Kevin Choi’s Wall-Mountable Oven can be easily mounted upon any kitchen in the wall. Its dome-like structure creates an ergonomic form that is easy to access and operate. To be honest it almost reminds me of a Stormtrooper for some reason!

Minimalist Waste Bin by Grace Youngeun Lee utilizes form rather than a mechanism to control the closing and opening of your bin. Simply place your foot on the extension and have it open up for you, no need to move the lid or to hold it while disposing of the garbage.

Loose cords lying about the house is one of my major sources of annoyance. While we wait for the world to go cord-free, the Dryerhair by Sam Hecht + Kim Colin (of Industrial Facility) offers a pretty neat solution for cable management. Use the hairdryer as needed, and once done, the cord along with the plug fits into the back of your hairdryer’s form. As we said, pretty neat!

Toasher by Lin Shuo De utilizes a method of interaction that has been lifted from another kitchen appliance, the toaster. The dirty items are lowered into the stainless steel tank, where an ultrasonic transducer agitates the dirt and separates it from the dishes. Add-ons elevate Toasher’s functionality even further; with the modular peg-board that can be attached to the rear of the unit, to expanding the amount of storage that it can hold and allowing it to be used as an item of furniture as well as just a kitchen appliance!

Space Efficient: Laundry Caddy

That image is doing our work for us. It’s a laundry caddy. Small enough to nestle between the washer and dryer, it’s the perfect place to keep your detergents and other… things that people who aren’t sloths use in their homes to keep stuff clean. I… I just call the laundry service and they pick my clothes up, clean then, fold them, and deliver them back to me. It’s a good service, albeit a little unnecessary, but the guilt I feel every time is equaled only by my unwillingness to actually do any house work.

I’ll probably grow up one day, and when I do, I’ll think about spending $50 on the Laundry Caddy.
