Zomato, one of India’s largest and most internationally recognized food delivery companies, owes much of its success to dedicated riders who navigate various terrains and weather conditions to ensure timely deliveries. These riders spend countless hours on their motorcycles, which have become indispensable companions in their daily lives. However, the motorcycles used are often purely utilitarian, lacking the comfort features that could make these long hours more bearable. Recognizing this gap, a group of designers embarked on a mission to redesign these motorcycles, focusing on enhancing the rider’s experience through basic yet impactful upgrades.

The initiative began with a thorough analysis of the pain points experienced by riders during extended periods on their bikes. The goal was to enhance the food delivery experience by identifying sources of discomfort and providing ergonomic solutions. This redesign was not just about minor tweaks but involved a comprehensive rethinking of the rider’s journey, addressing key areas that affect comfort and functionality.

Traditional motorcycle seats tend to become squeezed and ripped over time, causing discomfort. To address this, the new design incorporates improved cushioning to ensure long-lasting comfort. Riders often rely on the storage box for back support, leading to improper posture and discomfort. The redesigned motorcycle features a collapsible backrest that provides adequate support during breaks or long waits in traffic which aligns with the large Zomato delivery boxes. This addition provides much-needed support during traffic halts or short breaks. It can also collapse down to act as a seat for a second passenger if and when required.

Additionally, the absence of adequate storage for personal belongings has been addressed by creating designated storage areas, allowing riders to keep their essentials secure and accessible. Another key issue is the sudden break between the seat and the fuel tank, creating an uncomfortable riding position. The new design extends the seat cushioning towards the tank, ensuring a smoother transition and better support.

The redesign process also involved analyzing the comfort levels of riders of extreme heights and weights. For a rider who is taller than usual, the handlebar was found to be too low, causing the rider to lean forward and touch the handlebar with their legs while turning, and the footrest was positioned too upright. For a rider with an average height but a slightly healthier side of the scale, the handlebar and footrest positions were appropriate but the seat cushioning needed improvement.

By addressing these critical design gaps, the GlideRide project aims to make the lives of food delivery riders more comfortable and enjoyable. These basic upgrades are not just about improving physical comfort but are also a step towards acknowledging and valuing the hard work and dedication of these riders who play a pivotal role in delivering happiness to our doorsteps.

While ALBA, meaning “sunrise” in Spanish, brings the warmth of dawn, LUA, translating to “moon,” offers a subtle luminance that creates a tranquil atmosphere.

The intention behind LUA’s design extends beyond mere functionality. Raquel Hernandez, the designer of LUA, stated that their aim was to create a lamp that not only provides illumination but also enhances the atmosphere of any space. She explained that by incorporating unique textures and a front panel with a strategic fold, they achieved a balance between soft illumination and captivating design.

LUA consists of two wooden panels that enhance its aesthetic appeal. The back panel is corrugated, adding a textured element to the design. In front of it, a smaller panel with a slight fold casts an eclipse-like light onto the background, creating a captivating visual effect. This thoughtful design process involved collaborative participation from Woodendot’s users, who helped decide the three distinctive shapes of the LUA collection. Available in seven colorways and three sizes, LUA is the missing element for creating a room that is warm, inviting, and cozy.

One of the most striking features of the lower level is the way the living and dining areas open up to a small, intimate pool. Ascending the stairs leads to the villa’s upper level, where the bedroom awaits—a cozy sanctuary that exudes warmth and tranquility. The ambient lighting adds to the room’s intimate atmosphere, making it a perfect place to unwind. From here, the space extends to outdoor cantilevered seating, offering an elevated perspective of the natural beauty surrounding the villa.

The outermost and lowest of the villa’s “petals” are constructed from metal frames covered in a sturdy fabric, giving them a soft, organic appearance. At night, the villa transforms as soft pink uplights cast a magical glow onto these fabric petals, bringing the entire structure to life, much like a water lily illuminated by the moonlight.

The upper villa’s structure is composed of prefabricated metal elements, which continue the theme of delicate, petal-like forms. These elements are designed to be thin and see-through, evoking the fragile beauty of a water lily’s petals. The primary structural components within the villa, likely made from locally sourced bamboo, further reinforce the villa’s connection to its environment. This groundbreaking project, set to rise on Calle 72, one of the city’s bustling main arteries, promises to be a visual and functional masterpiece for Universidad Ean’s School of Sustainable Design.

The seven-story marvel will serve as a dynamic hub for creativity and learning, adorned with colorful, basketry-formed terraces that pay homage to Colombia’s rich craft traditions. Inspired by Werregue basketry, a unique weaving technique of the Wounaan indigenous community, the building’s front façade will be a captivating mosaic of crafted columns and open terraces. This design not only celebrates local heritage but also infuses modern architectural flair, making it a standout addition to Bogotá’s skyline.

The innovative columns of the building, which denote the earthy vibe of the project, are not just regular forms seen in past structures. They resemble organic stones stacked on top of each other, supporting the balconies above. The design detailing of the joint where the balcony slab meets the column is particularly fascinating, and easily noticeable from the ground. This junction appears like ripples created when a stone touches water, adding a unique and visually engaging element to the architecture. The vibrant colors of the columns are certainly eye-catching, ensuring the building stands out in the urban landscape.

Eliot Postma, group leader and partner at Heatherwick Studio, explained that creativity is intrinsic to the city of Bogotá and evident everywhere. He expressed the studio’s desire for students to feel proud of their campus even before entering the building, envisioning a public square that would provide passers-by with a welcoming communal oasis amidst the hard urban surroundings.

Heatherwick Studio’s design goes beyond aesthetics; it aims to create a central gathering space for the Universidad Ean campus. The new building will complement existing heritage structures, introducing a rare and much-needed public space in the heart of the city. Colombia, celebrated as the world’s second most biodiverse country, positions Bogotá as a leader in sustainable development. For most of us, the term “mutoscope” might sound like a fresh, modern concept. But in reality, this ingenious device is a blast from the past, harking back to the early days of cinema. Tentacle Media, a UK-based animation studio, has taken this vintage technology and given it a contemporary twist with their latest creation: the Mini-Mutoscope.

The Mini-Mutoscope is a nod to the earliest days of film, where the magic of motion was first captured and presented to wide-eyed audiences. Imagine the tech behind the very first films, now condensed into a charming, miniature version that you can hold in your hands. James Wilkinson, the creative director at Tentacle Media, introduces this device as a modern take on 19th-century motion picture technology. Essentially, the Mini-Mutoscope functions as a mechanical flipbook, featuring 36 still frames that, when viewed in quick succession, create the illusion of movement.

The company emphasized the analog quality of the Mini-Mutoscope, noting that it was a deliberate departure from the digital screens that dominate modern life. The creative director expressed that while they loved animation, consuming it only digitally lacks the tactile quality, texture, and presence of print media or physical art. The Mini-Mutoscope, according to Wilkinson, reintroduces that tangible connection, offering a physical interaction with animation that he likened to experiencing a live photo on a phone, but with a vintage, handcrafted feel.

Tentacle Media collaborated with Typoretum, a studio renowned for its antique and vintage printing expertise, to design a visually striking body for the device. The result is a plywood-based product that’s not only durable but also aesthetically pleasing. With bold colors, crisp lines, and a satisfying tactile feel, the Mini-Mutoscope is as much a piece of art as it is a tool for animation.
