Honor unveiled its latest foldable, the Honor Magic V6, at MWC 2026 back in March. Now, three months later, the phone is starting its global rollout in Malaysia and Singapore. That shift from launch event to retail availability is where the real test begins, because foldables have reached a point where being thin or flashy is no longer enough on its own.

The Magic V6 does not completely rethink what Honor has already been doing with its book-style foldables. Instead, it builds on a formula that already worked well, pushing it further with a bigger battery, a slim and comfortable design, and a hardware package that feels unusually complete for a foldable. After spending time with it, the Honor Magic V6 feels less like a dramatic reinvention and more like a careful refinement of what Honor already got right.

Aesthetics

Foldables still have a habit of looking oddly cautious. For devices built around one of the most dramatic ideas in modern consumer tech, they often arrive in the safest shades possible. Black, grey, silver, maybe a muted blue if a brand is feeling adventurous. The color choice itself is usually limited, which can make many foldables feel more sterile than stylish. Honor is one of the few brands that has tried to bring a little more personality into the category, and the Magic V6 sticks with that idea.

At first glance, the Magic V6 looks very similar to the Magic V5. The overall silhouette is familiar, the octagonal camera module is still there, and even the color direction feels like a continuation rather than a reset. This is clearly not a redesign for the sake of it. Honor seems comfortable with the look it has established for the Magic V line, so the V6 feels more like a polished follow-up than a fresh visual statement.

The finishes do a lot of the work in giving the phone its character. Honor offers the Magic V6 in four colors, and they feel more thought-through than the usual selection in this category. The red version I received is the most striking, with a soft-touch finish, a subtle hairline pattern, a gold frame, and a matching gold camera ring that make it feel a little warmer and more expressive than most foldables. The gold version goes in a different direction with a crisscross pattern that gives the back more texture and a slightly dressier look. If you want something more restrained, the white and black versions are there too.

Honor has also paid attention to the accessories. Each color comes with a matching case with a built-in kickstand, while the optional Special Edition case adds a bit more flair. Designed with Yoni Alter, it uses red aramid fiber and a colorful mosaic-style horse motif, while also adding built-in magnetic support. It is a small detail overall, but it suits the phone. The Magic V6 may not change Honor’s foldable design language, but it does show that the company is still putting real thought into how this series looks and feels.

Ergonomics

The ergonomics feel more like a refinement of the previous model, and I think that is a good thing. To me, the Magic V5 was already the most ergonomic book-style foldable around, so Honor did not really need to rethink the formula. What it has done instead is rework the internal architecture to fit what is currently the biggest battery in a foldable phone while still keeping the Magic V6 among the thinnest in the category.

There are slight differences depending on the color. The white version is the thinnest and lightest, measuring 156.7 x 74.5 x 8.75 mm when folded and just 4.0 mm when unfolded, with a weight of 219g. The other color variants are slightly thicker at 9.0 mm folded and 4.1 mm unfolded, and they weigh 224g.

In use, the Magic V6 still feels like one of the most comfortable foldables around. The hinge feels secure and firm, and opening and closing it feels fluid and well-judged. The frame is now flat, but the edges are ever so slightly curved, so it does not dig into your hand. The volume rocker and the power button, which also doubles as the fingerprint scanner, are placed where they are easy to reach. You can also customize the double press on the power button, which is a nice little touch in daily use.

What I like most is that the Magic V6 does not really feel like a typical large book-style foldable when it is closed. Folded shut, it feels surprisingly close to a regular slab phone, which makes it much easier to use casually throughout the day. It is this kind of refinement that makes the Magic V6 so easy to live with day to day.

Performance

The Magic V6 is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, which puts it right where a flagship should be in 2026. It is paired with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, although other configurations are available depending on the market. There is no real issue here with multitasking or with playing demanding AAA titles. Apps open quickly, moving between tasks feels smooth, and the phone has the kind of power that lets the larger display feel properly useful rather than overambitious.

Software is often where foldables either come together or start to feel more awkward than they should. The Magic V6 runs MagicOS 10 based on Android 16, and as with Honor’s recent devices, the focus seems to be on giving users plenty of AI features and cross-platform connectivity. Honor is leaning quite hard into interconnectivity with Apple devices. Using Honor Connect, the Magic V6 supports two-way notification sync with iPhones and iPads, while an Apple Watch can display messages and notifications from both devices. Through Honor WorkStation, the phone can also connect to a Mac and act as an extension of the desktop environment, with support for wireless screen casting, content transfer, and one-tap file sharing, including original-format Moving Photo.

On a foldable, though, the more important question is whether the software makes good use of the larger screen, and here the Magic V6 feels well equipped. Multitasking on the V6 is solid. The inner display gives you enough room to run apps side by side without things feeling cramped, and the phone has more than enough power to keep everything moving smoothly. On a device like this, that matters just as much as raw specs, because a foldable only really makes sense if the larger screen feels genuinely useful in everyday use.

Honor has equipped the Magic V6 with a 6.52-inch 2420 x 1080 AMOLED outer screen and a 7.95-inch 2352 x 2172 AMOLED inner display, and both are vivid, sharp, and fluid. Both panels support a 1 to 120Hz LTPO refresh rate, with up to 5,000 nits on the inner display and 6,000 nits on the outer, alongside eye comfort features such as 4320Hz PWM dimming. In use, the displays are excellent. The crease is barely noticeable, though not quite as invisible as on Oppo’s Find N6. The stereo speakers are also plenty loud and punchy, which suits the phone well for video and games.

The Magic V6 comes with a 50MP main camera with an f/1.6 aperture and OIS, a 64MP telephoto camera with an f/2.5 aperture, a 1/2-inch sensor, and OIS, and a 50MP ultrawide. On paper, that is a solid setup for a foldable, especially in a category where cameras have often felt like one of the first compromises.

In practice, the main and telephoto cameras are both strong for a foldable. Images come out sharp, colors are pleasing, and the overall look tends to lean a little on the brighter side. The ultrawide is satisfactory, though it does not stand out in quite the same way as the other two cameras.

Battery life is one of the Magic V6’s biggest selling points. Honor has managed to fit a 6,660mAh silicon-carbon battery into a foldable that is still among the thinnest in its class, while the 1TB version in China goes even further with a 7,150mAh battery. That is a huge battery even by slab flagship standards, never mind in a foldable.

Charging is strong too, with support for 80W wired and 66W wireless charging on the global model. A foldable this slim with this much battery capacity and this level of charging support is still unusual, and it is a big part of what makes the Magic V6 feel so easy to trust as an everyday device.

Sustainability

When it comes to foldables, durability can still be a concern for some people. Honor is clearly aware of that. The outer screen uses silicon nitride-based Nano Crystal Shield glass with up to 5,600 ultra-precise coating layers, while the inner display uses UTG flexible glass and is said to be 33 percent more impact resistant than the Magic V5. It is also rated for 500,000 folds.

The Magic V6 also comes with IP68 and IP69 ratings, which is the kind of protection you would more often expect from a slab flagship than a foldable. Honor is also promising seven major OS updates, which helps strengthen the long-term ownership story. What would make that sustainability angle more complete is greater use of sustainable materials, which is still an area where Honor could do more.

Value

Value is always a tricky part of the conversation with foldables because these devices are expensive by nature. No one is buying something like the Magic V6 because it is a bargain. Honor is beginning its wider rollout in Malaysia and Singapore. In Malaysia, the Magic V6 is priced at RM 7,699 for the 16GB RAM and 512GB storage version, which works out to roughly US$1,920 at a simple direct conversion. At that price, it is still very much a premium purchase, but the hardware does a lot to justify it. You are getting a slim and comfortable design, strong performance, large and bright displays, a huge battery, fast charging, and a durability story that feels more complete than what many foldables have offered in the past.

Value still depends on what you want from a foldable. If battery life, ergonomics, and high-end hardware matter most to you, the Magic V6 makes a very strong case for itself. If software polish is your top priority, some rivals may still feel a little more mature. Even so, the Magic V6 feels like a foldable that gives you a lot of substance for the money, not just novelty.

Verdict

The Magic V6 feels like Honor refining a formula that was already working well. It does not try to reinvent the book-style foldable, but it improves on the parts that matter most. The design still has personality, the ergonomics are excellent, the displays are strong, and the battery is genuinely standout for this category. The main and telephoto cameras are also better than what many people might expect from a foldable, which helps round out the overall package.

It is not without a few caveats, though. The software still does not feel quite as polished as the very best in the category, and the price places it firmly in ultra-premium territory. Even so, the bigger picture is very easy to like. If you want a foldable that feels slim, practical, powerful, and unusually easy to live with, the Magic V6 makes a very convincing case for itself.

Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold Leaks Early With a Familiar Design and One Noticeable Change

The Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold is shaping up to be exactly the phone you already know, made marginally better in the ways that are easiest to improve. CAD-based renders obtained by Android Headlines in partnership with OnLeaks offer what appears to be the first real look at the device, and they suggest Google’s foldable trajectory for 2026 is exactly what the last two years implied: the formula is set, and the job now is refinement. The front reportedly looks functionally identical to the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, same corner curvature, same hole-punch placement in the top-right of the cover display, same uniform raised bezels that double as protection for the inner screen. From the outside, you could be forgiven for not noticing the difference at all.

Flip it over and you’ll notice one fairly minor design change that differentiates this Fold from its predecessor. The camera island appears to have been reworked so the LED flash and microphone share the upper pill-shaped cutout with one of the rear lenses, rather than sitting awkwardly adjacent to everything else. The result looks like a cleaner, more coherent module, one designed with intent rather than assembled around constraints. Camera bumps are the first thing people actually see on a folded phone sitting on a table, so even a subtle improvement registers. Google reportedly kept the flat backplate, centered logo, and aluminum frame, which means the overall silhouette reads as a modest update rather than a rethink.

Based on CAD measurements, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold would drop from 10.8mm to 10.1mm folded, and from 5.2mm to 4.8mm unfolded, while height and unfolded width stay exactly the same at 155.2 x 150.4mm. Several Android foldables are already sitting below 9mm folded, so even if these numbers hold, the Pixel would still have ground to make up against its direct competition. That said, 0.7mm less in your pocket is 0.7mm less, and the projected unfolded profile at 4.8mm would be genuinely slim for a device with this much glass in it. The thinning happens entirely in depth, which means the familiar footprint would stay intact for existing Pixel Fold users considering an upgrade.

The Tensor G6 is expected as the headline spec upgrade, reportedly manufactured by TSMC on a 3nm process and possibly running a 7-core configuration, though that last detail is particularly unverified. The more interesting rumored hardware story is the cameras. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold shipped with a setup that sat below the Pixel 10 Pro in several respects, including an inferior ultrawide, which was a strange position for a $1,799 device. Google is rumored to be course-correcting here, possibly borrowing hardware from the Pixel 10 Pro lineup, though no confirmed specs have surfaced. The pressure is real regardless, given where Samsung and others have pushed foldable camera systems over the last cycle.

Google’s internal roadmap had reportedly targeted $1,500 for the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, but tariffs and rising memory costs have apparently complicated that figure considerably. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold launched at $1,799, and if current market conditions hold, the new model could land at or above that number. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 sits at $1,999 and the new Motorola Razr Fold is at EUR 1,999, so premium foldables have settled into a price tier that treats four figures as a floor. Battery, display sizes, IP68 resistance, Pixelsnap and Qi2 wireless charging are all expected to carry over, meaning there are no obvious additions to justify a steep price increase, just refinements. August 2026 is the rumored launch window, consistent with Google’s last two announcement cycles.

The Pixel 10a reportedly followed the Pixel 9a playbook with minor tweaks, and the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s biggest change was its display. Incremental releases have become the dominant mode across flagship Android, and if these leaks are accurate, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold fits that rhythm without apology. Whether that reads as frustrating or reassuring probably depends on how you felt about the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, because this device looks built squarely for people who wanted that phone to be slightly thinner with a better camera story.

By now, almost every major smartphone manufacturer other than Apple has launched a foldable phone. That includes even Google, who surprisingly didn’t stop at just one generation of the Pixel Fold. Of course, the ones that paved the way still have the lion’s share of that market, which means Samsung is still the leader in foldables of both the “book type” and the small clamshell design. Being first, however, doesn’t always mean you’ll end up always leading, and some have pointed out that the latest Galaxy Z Fold 6 is proof that the giant has been lagging behind. Is that the case, or are the new generation of flashy foldables setting people’s expectations instead? We put the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 in our hands and give it a good turn to see if “old” is a bad thing in this case.

Aesthetics

Samsung has taken a lot of heat for the Galaxy Z Fold 6’s design, with some people calling it iterative and dated. Such criticisms, however, are based on the presumption that new designs are always better or that changing designs every generation is a good thing. It should be noted that Apple, which is consistently hailed for its designs, would hold on to designs for years before making changes, and even then, the changes are often very minimal or even subtle. Sometimes, it’s a sign of maturity and reliability, giving people something familiar and comforting in an ever-changing smartphone market.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6

It’s not that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is unattractive. On the contrary, it looks pretty elegant, distinguished, and refined. The most significant visual changes include the sharper corners, a larger and wider Cover Screen, and thinner bezels around the displays. Together with the flat edges from the last generation’s design, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 looks more similar to the Galaxy S24 Ultra, also launched this year. Samsung has ensured that its design DNA isn’t lost across devices, increasing the holding power of its brand, at least for this year.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 embraces a more minimalist design language in stark contrast to almost every other foldable phone in the market today. That’s probably best seen in the triple camera setup on the back of the device, just three small equal-sized circles on a discreet pill-shaped island. Of course, there’s a cost to pay for that compact design, which we’ll get to later, but it’s hard to deny the appeal of such an aesthetic compared to the more obnoxious discs and blocks protruding from the backs of other foldable phones.

Ultimately, you get an elegant and premium-looking design that isn’t so far removed from the Galaxy S24 series, especially the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Is it iterative? Sure, but that in itself isn’t always a negative. Samsung made a few discernible changes but kept the overall language the same over the years. It might be exciting to see what new designs other brands will cook up next, but that novelty can fade quickly, leaving you with a design that might be a bit eye-catching at first but becomes more of an eye-sore in the long run.

Ergonomics

If there’s one major flaw in Samsung’s Galaxy Fold design, it would be the narrow and tall external screen. That made it awkward and even uncomfortable to use the foldable phone when folded, which pretty much defeated the purpose of having a screen there in the first place. Although not in the same vein as the Google Pixel Fold or the OnePlus Open, Samsung may have finally fixed that problem in the Galaxy Z Fold 6, potentially making it the first usable iteration of its line.

The larger 6.3-inch Cover Screen now covers a wider area, partly thanks to the reduction of bezels around it and partly thanks to sharpening the corners. Together with the overall lighter body and flat edges, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is easier to hold and use as a phone. It’s still narrower than a regular smartphone, but not by much anymore. Samsung may have finally reached a good compromise in this design that works when the phone is closed and when it’s open.

Of course, using the Galaxy Z Fold 6 as a mini tablet is still a pleasure, even more so now. It now looks and feels more like a very colorful e-book reader, especially with its squarish shape. Although the screen size remains the same compared to last year’s model, reducing bezels and flat edges gives it an edge (pun intended) when handling the device.

Performance

Like with the design, Samsung used a tried and tested formula for the Galaxy Z Fold 6’s hardware, which pretty much means top-of-the-line specs, at least for the most part. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is still the undisputed smartphone performance king outside of Apple’s kingdom, and the 12GB of RAM, though modest by today’s standards, is still decent, especially with some RAM Plus extension.

The external screen is just as bright and vibrant as ever, just now even larger than before. The internal 7.6-inch screen might not seem to have changed much until you realize you haven’t been noticing the crease as much. It’s still there if you look for it, but it has even less of a telling presence this year. With powerful silicon and gorgeous screens, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 never comes up short in performance, whether watching videos, playing games, or simply scrolling through social media. Of course, that includes AI features, though these still feel a bit more gimmicky and entertaining rather than practical for everyday use.

That said, hardware is also one area where the criticism of Samsung’s iterative approach holds the most water. As mentioned, 12GB of RAM, while usable, is pretty tight and frugal these days. Samsung has also been using the same 4,400mAh battery and the same 25W “quick” charging since the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in 2021. The latter is probably a compromise to keep the Galaxy Z Fold 6 almost as light as a regular non-foldable phone, but its age definitely starts to show.

Perhaps the biggest point of contention for Samsung’s 2024 foldable is the camera system, which has remained virtually unchanged since 2022. On the back, you have a 50MP main camera, a 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom, and a 12MP ultra-wide shooter, perhaps the only significant upgrade to this year’s foldable. On the external screen, you get the same 10MP front-facing camera, and inside is the same dismal 4MP under-display camera. It’s pretty much the same formula, so you’re getting almost the same results, which, fortunately, isn’t all that bad.

To be clear, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 still takes great photos, but it is lagging behind even its own cousins in this department. Samsung may be trying to pull an Apple in doing more with less, using computational photography and AI to compensate for hardware deficiencies, but those can only do so much. You definitely get plenty of detail, a wider dynamic range, and accurate colors, especially with sufficient lighting, and the new ultra-wide camera also takes brighter photos. Regardless, given its price tag, you’d probably expect a bit more than “decent.” In other words, you are not paying for the cameras or the photography experience.

Sustainability

As one of the world’s biggest smartphone manufacturers, Samsung has a big responsibility to help keep the planet alive for future generations. Thankfully, it takes that responsibility quite seriously, and every year, we see it take steps on multiple fronts to ensure its phones become sustainable parts of modern life. This year’s foldable includes plenty of recycled materials, including plastic, glass, aluminum, cobalt, and rare earth metals. For the first time in a Galaxy phone, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 includes recycled gold and copper components.

Samsung is also doing its part to make the rather pricey foldable phone last as long as possible through improved durability and software support. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is the first of its kind to achieve an IP48 rating, a significant improvement over its predecessors’ IPX8 rating. Samsung also promises seven OS upgrades and seven years of security updates, ensuring that this expensive investment won’t become obsolete quickly, especially considering how its cameras are already on the old side at this point.

Value

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 might not have mind-blowing cameras or an eye-popping design, but it offers plenty of features that matter. It is one of the extremely few that supports an active stylus with pressure sensitivity and one of an even smaller group of phones with a desktop mode that makes you feel like you’re using an Android PC. With solid performance and a stylish minimalist design, what’s not to love?

Most definitely, the price amounts to $1,900 for a paltry 256GB of storage. That’s not only the most expensive “normal” foldable in the market today, but it’s even strangely $100 higher than the Galaxy Z Fold 5 when it launched last year. With few upgrades and changes, you’d be forgiven for scratching your head at Samsung’s decision. At that price point, you’d expect a little bit more, maybe a bit more battery, a bit more RAM, or better yet, a bit more camera prowess. Fortunately, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is made to last, though that still makes it feel more like a luxury item than a consumer product, which could be Samsung’s intention.

Verdict

The fast-paced dynamics of the smartphone market have trained our brains to look for new things every year, whether it’s a new design, new hardware, or a new feature. Newer doesn’t always mean better, and the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is proof of that. It has a classic design focuses on the essentials and leaves out all the fluff, creating an aesthetic that is as luxurious as its price tag. Yes, we wish Samsung had delivered more, especially regarding the cameras, but that also has trade-offs for design and usability. In the final analysis, Samsung wisely picked its battles to deliver a foldable phone with an elegant design and a solid set of features you can rely on for years to come.

Let’s dive into every aspect of this phone to see whether it lives up to its expectations in form and function.

Aesthetics and Design

The TECNO Phantom V Fold2 5G design immediately catches attention, especially the Loewe Edition, which blends premium aesthetics with practical everyday use. The Rippling Blue and Karst Green editions bring their own luxury flavor. However, what’s impressive about the Phantom V Fold2 5G is how these design elements translate into a seamless user experience.

The Rippling Blue edition, crafted with eco-friendly leather, gives the phone a textured, high-end feel that looks great and makes the device more practical for daily use. The texture ensures a better grip, which is crucial when holding such a large device. I found that even during more extended periods of use, the grip felt secure, reducing the chance of the phone slipping from my hand. Its ability to resist dirt and fingerprints also makes a big difference; there’s no need to constantly wipe smudges off the back, keeping the phone as pristine as the day it came out of the box.

On the other hand, the Karst Green version features a marble-patterned fiberglass back, a significant upgrade in terms of durability. It feels notably lighter than a glass-backed foldable while maintaining a premium touch. This was particularly noticeable when using the phone throughout the day—taking it in and out of pockets, placing it on different surfaces, and handling it during daily tasks. The fiberglass material gives you confidence that the phone can handle the occasional bump or drop without adding unnecessary weight. Despite being 25% lighter than glass, the 100 times better drop resistance means you can carry it without worrying too much about accidental damage, which is always reassuring.

From a size and weight perspective, the Phantom V Fold2 5G balances portability and functionality. When folded, it’s compact enough to fit in most pockets and easy to hold in one hand for quick tasks, measuring 156.5 x 72.9 x 11.78 mm. I found the folded size ideal for checking notifications, scrolling through social media, or responding to texts. However, when unfolded, it transforms into something far more versatile. The device expands to 156.5 x 141.2 x 5.52 mm, offering a large, tablet-like display perfect for more immersive tasks like watching videos, editing documents, or gaming.

The 249g weight feels surprisingly light given its foldable form factor, and it’s well-balanced in hand. Whether folded or unfolded, I didn’t feel strain during longer use sessions, a common issue with heavier foldables. The weight is distributed evenly, so the phone doesn’t feel top-heavy or awkward in either configuration, making it easy to carry around throughout the day without discomfort.

One feature that enhances everyday use is the 3D micro-arc curved frame. The phone’s pebble-like shape feels smooth and natural in the hand, making it easy to grip. This design minimizes sharp edges, which helps make the device feel comfortable to hold, even for extended periods. The rounded edges are subtle, but they make a noticeable difference compared to a more squared-off foldable that can dig into your hand after a while.

The aerospace-grade droplet-shaped hinge is another standout feature. You’ll first notice how smoothly the phone opens and closes. There’s no stiff or awkward resistance—it’s a fluid motion that feels precise and well-engineered. This hinge supports 400,000 folds, which means it’s built to last. After repeated use, I didn’t notice any significant wear or creaking, which is reassuring for a device that literally hinges on this kind of mechanism. The crease in the middle of the screen is minimized to 0.1mm, making it barely noticeable during use. Whether watching videos, reading, or working on documents, the crease fades into the background, and you quickly forget it’s even there.

Another practical feature is the hinge’s ability to hover at angles between 30° and 120°, which turns the phone into a hands-free device. This comes in handy for video calls, streaming, or even following recipes without needing to prop the phone up awkwardly. It’s easy to adjust the phone to your preferred angle and stays securely in place without slipping.

For those concerned about everyday wear and tear, the IP54 rating provides peace of mind. While it won’t survive being submerged in water, the rating means it can handle splashes and dust exposure without issue. This is helpful if you’re using the phone outdoors or near water, as you don’t have to be as cautious as you would with a non-rated device. The outer display is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, which helps with scratch resistance and adds durability. Throughout my usage, I didn’t notice any significant scuffs or marks on the outer display, even after sliding it in and out of pockets and placing it on various surfaces.

The rumored launch of the Galaxy Z Fold6 Slim in South Korea on September 25 suggests that Samsung is moving towards an ultra-thin design. At just over 10mm thick, this foldable could be the thinnest in Samsung’s lineup, prioritizing portability and ease of use. This shift, however, comes at the cost of a beloved feature: S Pen support. By opting for a slimmer profile, Samsung has reportedly removed the necessary film that allows the S Pen to function, leading to a significant trade-off between form and function.

The decision to slim down the Galaxy Z Fold6, potentially at the expense of the S Pen, raises a key question for users. The S Pen has been a defining feature for many Galaxy Fold users, offering precision and enhancing productivity, particularly for tasks like note-taking, sketching, and navigation. For professionals and creative users, the S Pen is an essential tool that significantly enhances the capabilities of their devices. Losing this feature could be a dealbreaker for those relying on the stylus for daily tasks.

On the other hand, a slimmer, more elegant device could appeal to users who prioritize portability and design. The rumored titanium frame, which could replace the aluminum used in previous models, contributes to a thinner profile while elevating the device’s durability and premium feel. The thinner form factor and lightweight design make it easier to carry and handle, addressing one of the main criticisms of foldable phones: their bulkiness.

But does the sleekness of a thinner device justify the loss of the S Pen? For some, the answer may be yes. A thinner device fits better into pockets and hands, making it more convenient for everyday use. Unlike the Galaxy S24 Ultra, which has an integrated slot for the S Pen, the Galaxy Fold series requires users to manage the S Pen separately, which can be cumbersome. Perhaps this is Samsung’s plan to gradually “weed” owners off the S Pen by not including it in their newer, slimmer foldable models. Personally, I feel that the stylus on a foldable phone feels as outdated as the physical keyboards on early smartphones. I rarely use the stylus anymore, and I’d much rather have a thinner, more lightweight device. The larger screens—6.5 inches externally and 8 inches internally—ensure that users still get an expansive display experience, even with the reduced thickness. This could appeal to a broader audience, especially those who might have hesitated to adopt a foldable phone due to concerns about size and weight.

However, the trade-off might not be worth it for users who have come to depend on the S Pen. The stylus adds a layer of functionality that a thinner device can’t replace. One particular feature I love about the S Pen on the S24 Ultra is the ability to take pictures—a convenient tool for solo content creators. I also track the stock market, and using the S Pen with Trading View for charting is amazing, so I would definitely miss the pen for that use case. Without the S Pen, tasks that require precision or creativity might become more cumbersome, detracting from the overall user experience.

Reflecting on past perceptions, Lei acknowledged a previous skepticism toward flip phones, once dismissing them as merely “pretty for nothing.” In those earlier iterations, compactness often came at the cost of performance and functionality. However, Xiaomi now believes it has cracked the code, poised to deliver a flip phone that is “pretty for everything”. Let’s delve into the details to see if the MIX Flip truly lives up to the hype.

    Aesthetics

    The stunning 4.01-inch outer screen commands immediate attention, and rightfully so. It houses two individual rear cameras positioned vertically nestled at the top left corner with minimal protrusion. The shiny outer screen and the matt glass back panel create an interesting contrast, while discreet black Xiaomi logo seamlessly blends into the back panel. Upon closing the device, reveals Leica logo and text on its matte hinge.

    The Xiaomi MIX Flip comes in four variants: White, Black, Purple, and Xiaomi nylon fiber edition. The White, Black, and Purple variants share the same matte finish. In contrast, the Xiaomi Nylon Fiber edition features a distinctive woven nylon back panel, adding a unique texture to the device’s aesthetic. Overall, the MIX Flip offers a minimal and clean design.

    Ergonomics

    The Xiaomi Mix Flip boasts a sleek and highly portable form factor. Unfolded, it measures 167.5 x 74.02 x 7.8 mm, with a folded thickness of 15.99 mm, and weighs 192 g. While it’s not the slimmest or lightest flip phone available on the market, its compact size makes it easy to hold and slip into your pocket.

    It feels premium in your hand, featuring an “All-around Liquid Quad-Curved Display” for a smooth feel. The robust hinge allows the phone to be positioned at various angles ranging from approximately 45 to 120 degrees, fulfilling its advertised flexibility. Opening and closing the phone feels smooth and satisfying.

    The fingerprint scanner on the right side of the device works great, and the matte back panel resists fingerprints and smudges, ensuring a clean appearance. The glossy aluminum alloy frame tends to attract fingerprints, though this is a minor inconvenience.

    Performance

    The outer screen of the MIX Flip not only captivates with its stunning visuals but also offers exceptional functionality. Sporting a 4.01-inch screen, it boasts a resolution of 1,392 x 1,208 pixels (1.5K resolution), HDR support, and a pixel density of 460ppi. It achieves a peak brightness of 3,000 nits and maintains an overall brightness of 1,600 nits, ensuring clarity even in bright conditions.

    The MIX Flip harnesses the full potential of its impressive outer screen. The large area of the outer screen (3.5-inch to be exact), with a 16:9 aspect ratio, accommodates various apps. Xiaomi enhances usability further by integrating widgets on the left side of the 4.01-inch display, positioned above the camera module. You can customize this area with up to 5 widgets such as Weather, Clock, Calendar, Health, Music Player, and Recent Apps, and you can cycle through widgets by swiping up and down.

    Out of the box, the outer screen comes pre-loaded with essential apps like Phone, Browser, Camera, Calendar, Calculator, Weather, Music, Recorder, Clock, alongside a couple of other Chinese apps. According to Xiaomi, over 200 of the most popular Chinese apps are optimized for the outer screen. Since the review unit is the Chinese version, it’s expected that not all apps I downloaded are available on the outer screen. For instance, apps such as Slack, Netflix, Google Calendar, and Kindle are not currently supported on the outer screen. Other popular apps like YouTube, Instagram, X, WhatsApp, Google Chrome, Google Maps, Uber, and Spotify can run on the outer screen. Users can enjoy watching YouTube clips horizontally, leveraging the display’s capabilities fully.

    The outer screen is swift and responsive, with notable interactivity. It supports a full keyboard that extends from edge to edge when the phone is oriented with the camera module in the upper left corner, enhancing typing comfort. Additionally, the screen supports handwriting input. While this feature is currently limited to Chinese characters, it adds a useful dimension to the typing experience. You can access quick settings and notifications on the outer screen, though they are not customizable.

    On the other hand, the inner display measures 6.86 inches with a 2,912 x 1,224 resolution and 1-120Hz LTPO, featuring 460 ppi and a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, mirroring the outer screen’s brightness and vibrancy, with the crease being barely noticeable. It’s less exciting compared to the outer screen, but it gets the job done with minimum fuss.

    Xiaomi’s ongoing collaboration with Leica continues on to its flip phone. MIX Flip features a 50MP Leica main camera with a 1/1.55” sensor, an f/1.7 aperture, and OIS. The other camera on its back is a 50MP Leica floating telephoto camera with a 1/.88” sensor, and an f/2.0 aperture. It supports macro photography where you can get up close to the subject with a minimal distance of 9cm (or about 3.5 inches). You can choose between the “Leica Vibrant” and “Leica Authentic” modes in the camera app to tailor the look to your liking.

    The main camera consistently delivers impressive results across a variety of shooting conditions. Images exhibit excellent sharpness, detail, and accurate color reproduction. The camera generally handles dynamic range well. However, some highlight details are blown out without HDR enabled. Activating HDR significantly improves dynamic range, preserving details in both shadows and highlights.

    The telephoto camera performs well in daylight or at closer tele zoom levels in low-light conditions, with nice preservation of details. The portrait mode offers a range of focal lengths (23mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 75mm). The skin tone is accurate and subject isolation is great with creamy bokeh. There is a 32MP front-facing camera with a 1/3.14” sensor and an f/2.0 aperture, but taking advantage of the outer screen, you are less likely to open up the front-facing camera for any selfies.

    The Xiaomi MIX Flip shines in capturing daylight videos. All three cameras (main, telephoto, and selfie) can record up to 4K resolution at 60 fps with ESI, with the main camera pushing the limits further at 8K 24 fps. Video footage is smooth, well-exposed, and has good detail. While the Mix Flip’s image stabilization performs admirably in low-light conditions, the dynamic range can be somewhat limited.

    One advantage of the flip phone is the ability to preview and capture photos and videos on the outer screen. It supports up to 2x zoom for taking photos and videos from the outer screen, though portrait mode is limited to 1x zoom. If you switch back to taking photos from the inner screen, it automatically switches to the front-facing camera, which I find a bit annoying.

    Under the hood, the MIX Flip is powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 paired with 12GB or 16GB of LPDDRX RAM and storage of options of 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of UFS 4.0, with virtually expandable RAM. For reference, our review unit was 12GB RAM/512GB storage. It runs HyperOS based on Android 14. Both benchmark results and real-world use performance are great, handling any task with ease. The Xiaomi MIX Flip is equipped with a 3500mm² VC area, but the device tends to get hot during extended photo and video use.

    Compact form factors often compromise on battery size, but Xiaomi has impressively fit a 4,780mAh battery into the MIX Flip. It supports 68W wired charging, although it does not include wireless charging capabilities. Addressing another common issue with flip phones, the MIX Flip allows you to make and receive calls without opening the device. Additionally, it supports WiFi 7 for enhanced connectivity.

    Sustainability

    While flip phones offer certain advantages, durability is a key area where they can face challenges. The device incorporates Xiaomi’s Shield Glass on the outer screen, promising ten times greater drop resistance than conventional glass. Moreover, the phone has undergone rigorous testing, enduring 500,000 folds without compromising its structural integrity. The battery is another highlight, maintaining at least 80% capacity after 16,000 charging cycles. While the absence of an IP rating might be a concern for some, these features collectively contribute to a device that’s built to last.

    Value

    As the competition in the foldable market heats up, Xiaomi’s entry promises to shake things up, driving further innovation and consumer choice in the smartphone landscape. Priced competitively at 5,999 yuan (approximately $825 USD) for the base 12GB RAM and 256GB storage model, the Mix Flip undercuts the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 by a significant margin. The 12GB RAM and 512GB variant is also more affordable than the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra.

    While Xiaomi Bulgaria Country Manager, Nikolay Nankov, revealed that Mix Flip would be available in Bulgaria for 2,600 Bulgarian lev (about $1,450 USD), notably higher than its price in China, the company has yet to officially confirm global availability. Nevertheless, the device’s competitive pricing (at least for the Chinese domestic market), overall performance, and potential for wider release could disrupt the market and intensify competition in the flip phone segment.

    Verdict

    Xiaomi Mix Flip is a well-rounded flip phone that combines sleek design, premium build, top-notch performance, and great mobile imaging capabilities. It features a large, functional outer screen (though its full potential is yet to be tested due to the review unit being China version), the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, and two 50 MP Leica cameras, with competitive pricing (at least in China). While global availability details remain pending, Mix Flip stands as a serious contender, poised to shake things up and accelerate innovation in the foldable phone space.

    Xiaomi MIX Fold 4 Hands-on Review: Thin in Size, Big in Everything Else

    Despite what naysayers claim, there foldable phone market is showing no signs of disappearing or even slowing down. After all, we’ve barely scratched the surface of what these form-changing devices can truly become, especially when it comes to design. The book-style large foldable has been around for years, yet every generation still has some improvement to offer, whether it’s in durability, performance, or size. “Thin” is a description not often associated with this kind of smartphone, a kind that once felt like two phone slabs placed on top of each other. The Xiaomi MIX Fold 4 is challenging that preconceived notion with what is one of the thinnest foldables in the market, and we were able to get a hands-on experience to see what the fuss is all about.

    Blurring the lines between Foldables and Ordinary Phones

    Next to the price tag and durability, one major concern that people have with foldable phones is their sizes. Admittedly, the earliest design iterations didn’t have the benefit of hindsight, but they were rather bulky and heavy when folded, a far cry from the regular phones we carry in our pockets. On its fourth generation, Xiaomi is really pushing the limits of foldables with a design that is getting really close to what people have become used to with non-foldable phones.

    The Xiaomi MIX Fold 4 is crazy thin when laid open flat at 4.59mm, and with a 9.47mm thickness when folded close, it’s just 1mm shy of traditional phones. It’s also only 226g light, which is slowly getting closer to our definition of “normal.” Xiaomi credits no less than three technologies for this feat, like using lightweight yet durable carbon fiber materials in a few key parts. That said, the cover screen’s 21:9 aspect ratio still falls under the “tall and narrow” shape that has made many foldables like this a bit awkward to use. Aside from that, however, it’s really refreshing and delightful to hold such a thin and lightweight device.

    More (Power) for Less (Space)

    There are several consequences to shrinking the space inside a phone, from having less room for the battery or constricting airflow and affecting cooling. That’s even more problematic for foldable phones that have split their components, especially the battery, on two sides. You’d expect that a thinner foldable would have fewer features, but Xiaomi managed to surprise us yet again.

    It’s already expected that the MIX Fold 4 will have the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor and high-end memory, but getting a 5,100mAh battery that’s larger than its thicker predecessor is pretty impressive. Xiaomi didn’t skimp on the screens either, both with nearly identical capabilities, save for their sizes and aspect ratio. Unfortunately, our brief experience with the large foldable did disappoint us with a visible crease, a design flaw that’s already being squeezed out of other foldables. To be fair, though, you get used both to the appearance and even the feel of the crease so your mind begins to filter out its presence.

    Big in Photography

    Whatever improvements Xiaomi made when it came to making the MIX Fold 4 extra-thin goes out the window when you see how thick the camera bump is, almost as thick as the (unfolded) phone itself. The raised box has a somewhat asymmetrical design where the lower edge curves down ever so slightly. There’s a grid pattern on the glass surrounding the cameras, and it’s actually a texture that you can feel with your finger. It’s a nice touch, but one that seems a bit out of the left field.

    You will, however, forgive that slight design oddity when you witness the results of the four cameras on the MIX Fold 4’s back. There’s a 50MP main shooter with all the bells and whistles you’d expect, and it’s joined by not one but two 50MP telephoto cameras, one with a floating-style lens used for portrait and macro photography, the other with a periscope-style lens with 5x optical zoom. The ultra-wide camera has a 12MP sensor that’s admittedly just a small step higher than the typical measly 8MP. It still needs rigorous testing for verification, but what we’ve seen so far is enough to consider that large camera bump well worth the sacrifice.

    Final Thoughts

    Almost everyone (except Apple, of course) is making a foldable phone these days, and the competition is heating up as more players join the race. It’s no longer enough to just have the latest specs or a durable hinge, you also need to push the envelope of design and performance to catch up with non-foldable flagships. With one of the thinnest and lightest designs in this segment and a quad-camera system that could be on par with the latest and greatest, the Xiaomi MIX Fold 4 is inching closer to that ideal where there will be very little reason to opt for a non-foldable phone.

    Google’s Official ‘Made by Google’ Event on August 13: Here’s What the Pixel 9 Pro and Fold Look Like

    With Google officially announcing the “Made by Google” event on Aug. 13, excitement is high for the new Pixel lineup. This year, Google is shaking things up by revealing the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro series earlier than usual, likely aiming to capture attention before the expected iPhone 16 launch in September.

    In addition to the Pixel 9 Pro, Google is also unveiling the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, accompanied by a Gemini-linked teaser video. While leaks have provided glimpses of these devices, Google’s announcement finally puts to rest any speculation about their appearance and names. The teaser video highlights the double-stacked lenses on the rear camera module and the exterior screen and hinge design.

    The Pixel 9 Pro Fold marks a noticeable change from its predecessor. It adopts a taller and narrower profile than the original’s short and wide passport-style form factor. This new design aligns more closely with devices like the OnePlus Open, offering a larger, more practical outer display that enhances usability.

    One of the most striking changes is removing Google’s signature camera bar. The first-generation Pixel Fold featured a prominent, elongated camera bar, while the Pixel 9 Pro Fold opted for a new, more streamlined camera housing. This redesign provides a cleaner aesthetic and ensures the phone remains stable when laid flat.

    Examining the new model’s inner display, there’s still a noticeable crease, although it appears less prominent. The screen ratio has shifted to a taller and narrower format, with slimmer bezels for a more modern look. However, this change includes an inner camera cutout on the upper-left part of the display instead of being part of the bezel, which might not please everyone.

    The first-generation Pixel Fold’s short and wide design made it a great one-handed device despite its weight. However, its cover screen was often too wide to comfortably hold for extended periods. In contrast, the new Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s taller form factor should enhance ease of use and portability.

    A potential concern with the new model is its slightly smaller battery capacity of 4,560mAh compared to the first Fold’s 4,727mAh. Given that the original wasn’t known for its battery longevity, this reduction might raise some concerns. However, Google’s latest Tensor processor promises efficiency gains that could help mitigate this issue.

    Alongside these design changes, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold has a new 45-watt USB-C charger. This new charger, which sports a more rounded design than its predecessors, is part of Google’s effort to improve charging speeds and overall user convenience.

    Having used the first-generation Pixel Fold extensively, I can attest to its decent quality despite its drawbacks, such as dim screen brightness, subpar speakers, and limited app optimization. With the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Google can address these issues and deliver a more refined and competitive product.

    The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold represents a significant step forward in design and functionality. By transitioning from the unique but bulky passport form factor to a more practical and user-friendly design, Google is making strides to compete more effectively in the foldable phone market. We’ll have to wait and see how Google plans to structure the pricing this time, but here’s hoping the new model looks impressive and delivers on performance and user experience.

    The foldable phone market has diversified over the past years, no longer a rat race between two giants. Many brands have jumped into the fray, each adding their own piece to complete the puzzle. Whether it’s imaging or durability, new foldables are addressing the concerns and doubts that consumers have about the viability of this kind of product. One thing that hasn’t exactly changed for the better is the price tag attached to these foldable phones, even years after rumors of cheaper options, at least of the non-clamshell kind. Rather than downgrade the experience to also push down the price, however, it might be more effective to offer a design that makes sense for a four-digit figure. That seems to be the premise behind the “pro-foldable” Vivo X Fold 3 Pro, so we take it for a good spin to see if it’s truly worth its weight in gold.

    Aesthetics

    There is a certain elegance to the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro’s simple design. Gone are the extraneous lines and shapes, leaving only the essential elements of a stylish phone. By no means is it boring or plain, especially given the visual texture on the Solar White and Eclipse Black colorways, just that the design doesn’t distract you beyond the first brush nor does it hold your attention hostage.

    The phone is incredibly thin and, as we’ll see later, light, especially when unfolded flat at only 5.2mm thick, disregarding the equally thick camera bump. When folded, it does reach 11.20mm, though that’s not that far from the dimensions of regular slabs of metal and glass. In other words, you no longer look like you’re hiding two phones in the same pocket.

    That aforementioned camera design, however, will be a bit divisive. On the one hand, it doesn’t look that awkward with a centrally positioned large circle that seems to mimic the lens of a traditional camera. On the other hand, it is still a very large circle on the back of the phone, which has some repercussions when it comes to handling the phone. Some would also consider such a large design element an eyesore, though it thankfully offers some significant benefit to its unavoidable presence.

    Ergonomics

    At only 236g light, the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro is pretty much on par with many premium flagships of the non-foldable kind, especially with “ultra,” “pro,” or “max” in their names. That makes this foldable phone feel comfortable to hold, especially when you consider how large their screens are. The external screen, in particular, has a 21:9 aspect ratio, which also puts it closer to regular candy bar designs. It’s still tall and narrow, though not as narrow as Samsung’s notorious design.

    While the weight and shape of the phone lend it well for convenient and comfortable handling, there are a few features that may trip up a few users. Primary is that camera bump that could hinder the movement of your fingers on the back. Conversely, it also creates a protrusion that rests on your finger, helping avoid accidental drops. Either way, expect the phone to wobble on a desk when unfolded and lying flat on it. The alert slider, which gives a quick physical way to mute or unmute the phone, is also placed close to the top, which means you can’t easily reach it using the same hand you’re holding the phone with. They’re not huge deal-breakers, just small nitpicks that, when taken together, could take out the enjoyment of using the phone every day.

    Performance

    Vivo definitely didn’t pull punches when it came to making sure the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro could match other flagships this year. In some ways, it might even surpass them. Running on the current-gen Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and paired with a generous 16GB of RAM, it can handle anything you throw at it with aplomb. In synthetic benchmarks, it can stand head-to-head with the Galaxy S24 Ultra, and it might even surpass the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6 if Samsung continues to keep memory down to 12GB max.

    Battery is another department where Vivo is leading the race, cramming an unbelievable 5700mAh capacity inside such a thin and light device. This phone is guaranteed to last half a day, at least on “regular” and mixed usage, and thanks to 100W charging, it will only take an hour to get it back to full. There’s also fast 50W wireless charging, but you’ll need Vivo’s special charger to achieve that speed.

    Both the external 6.53-inch 2748×1172 and internal 8.03-inch 2480×2200 screens are at the top of their class, showing vivid colors and exceptional brightness that make the phone a joy to use outdoors on either side of the fold. Thanks to Vivo’s engineering, the crease on the internal foldable display is barely visible. That hinge allows the fold to hover between 60 to 180 degrees without collapsing, creating that tiny laptop-like experience that you may or may not love. Vivo does have a “flex mode” to take advantage of that angle, as well as other features that only make sense for foldable phones. Quickly folding and then unfolding the phone again triggers the split screen feature where you can pick a second app to open side-by-side with the current one. It’s a bit gimmicky and probably won’t make owners feel comfortable about the longevity of that hinge.

    The large bump on the back of the Vivo X Fold 3 is easily justified by the rather beefy sensors it houses there. Leading the pack is a 50MP wide sensor with autofocus and OIS, and it is joined by a 64MP telescope camera with a periscope lens, also with AF and OIS. The 50MP ultra-wide shooter sadly drops the optical image stabilization but still manages to perform well.

    All in all, the foldable delivers impressive photos and videos, especially with the Vivo V3 dedicated imaging chip in action. Details are rich and colors are accurate, and you can also pick the mode of vividness that best conveys the message you want the photo to send. The camera system is also co-engineered with ZEISS, which not only means the famed ZEISS T* coating but also different presets that mimic the output of the optics maker’s most famous lenses. It’s definitely great to see foldable phone cameras finally stepping up to the challenge, though the price in design and literal cost will be something people will need to consider before making a purchase decision.

    Sustainability

    Vivo is one of the few smartphone manufacturers that are taking big steps in going green, though that is sadly not directly seen nor felt on the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro. Instead, we can only look to the company’s wider sustainability efforts, particularly in running its business on green energy and doing its part in replenishing the planet’s greenery.

    What it does promise with its newest foldable, however, is that it’s not going to end up in the trash or even recycling centers quickly. Durability has been one of the biggest concerns consumers have with foldables, so it’s not surprising that Vivo spent a lot of resources on ensuring the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro will be as reliable as more traditional smartphones. Those measures include a light yet ultra-durable carbon fiber hinge, protective Armor Glass for the cover display, and glass-like UPE fiber for the back panel. The phone is also rated IPX8, which is great for water protection but not so much for dust, raising worries that these tiny particles could inflict fatal damage on the sensitive internals of the phone.

    Value

    It’s pretty clear that Vivo spared no effort in equipping the X Fold 3 Pro with the best of the best in smartphone technologies this year. On normal smartphones, that would be a given, but such features on a foldable raise the stakes and the prices higher. At around $1,600 to $1,900, depending on where you get it, it’s not exactly an easily accessible product, especially when you consider it’s not available in some global markets.

    The Vivo X Fold 3 doesn’t exist in a vacuum, however, and when you consider that its peers ask for nearly the same figure, you begin to see some of the advantages the foldable phone has. It’s definitely not lacking much, and it cuts quite a striking figure with its slim profile and lightweight body. Suffice it to say, there’s a reason it has “Pro” in its name, and it’s that same reason you’ll need to pay a premium for it.

    Verdict

    Samsung and Huawei kicked off the foldable phone race, and although almost six years have passed, the prices for these products have barely gone down. What makes matters worse is that in some cases, the prices have remained the same or even increased but have very little to show for it. If you’re going to charge a premium for a product, you should be making sure the product is actually premium.

    That’s the kind of promise that the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro offers, cutting almost no corners in the name of delivering the best foldable experience with current industry technologies, not those from two or three years ago. It’s not an easy promise to make, especially when you consider the need to also make the design slimmer and lighter, but Vivo seems to have actually pulled it off. For that feat alone, the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro definitely deserves your consideration, even with that hefty price tag.
