Kohler brutalist smart toilet conveys the transformative power of water

It’s almost too easy to take for granted what a toilet looks like, especially considering what we use it for. At the same time, that’s the very reason why these fixtures need to not only be well-designed but also aesthetic, providing a sense of comfort and maybe even delight despite and in spite of the context. That is why the majority of toilets are designed with shiny white surfaces and smooth curves in an attempt to provide a visual and tactile contrast to their purpose. That said, that is hardly the only way to design a striking product, and this rather unique toilet design concept uses a different strategy that still manages to capture the eyes and the mind with its brutalist form inspired by the powerful waters that course through it.

Designer: Kohler x SR_A

There’s really no hard rule on what a toilet should look like as long as it functions as intended and is more or less comfortable to use. That toilets are often white, smooth, and curvy is simply a matter of convention and convenience. There are, of course, exceptions to these that add a bit of flair to the bathroom, and the Formation 02 is one design that immediately stands out from the crowd both in its shape and its unconventional color.

As if its orange paint weren’t enough to get it noticed, the Formation 02’s blocky and faceted form evokes a different imagery from typical toilets. It has a rough sort of character as if the whole body was hewn from stone, giving it a brutalist aesthetic you won’t find in any toilet. It’s a design chosen not merely for the sake of being different but for the message it tries to convey.

In particular, it tries to demonstrate the effects of moving water on its environment, shaping and changing the way things look. Sometimes it can smooth out rocks into pebbles, but sometimes it can also wear them down to rough surfaces. The Formation 02 represents both possibilities, with some sides smooth while others left rough and raw.

While it might indeed look rough on the outside, the Formation 02 is still a functional toilet that brings comfort and convenience once the lid is lifted, which can be done without even touching it. It’s a smart toilet, after all, and it offers a heated seat, customizable bidet cleansing, and more, allowing you to do your thing neatly and cleanly while appreciating the distinctive design of this one-of-a-kind toilet concept.

Kohler Unveils A Faucet So Eye-catching, You Won’t Stop Washing Your Hands

Imagine a faucet that’s not just functional, but a sculptural centerpiece in your bathroom. The Kohler x SR-A Formation 01 aims to do just that. This limited-edition faucet is a collaboration between Kohler, a renowned name in kitchen and bath design, and Dr. Samuel Ross, an innovator known for pushing the boundaries of material science. The form combines the appeal of avant-garde architecture and automotive design, with an edgy single-piece aesthetic that zigzags to defy expectation and the boring archetype of organic forms seen in bathroom design.

Designers: Kohler & SR-A

The Formation 01 stands out with its ultra-modern design. Crafted from Neolast, a groundbreaking material developed by Kohler, the faucet boasts clean lines and a unique, almost organic form. This innovative material allows for a wider range of shapes and colors compared to traditional faucet materials, making the Formation 01 a true conversation starter. The faucet is complemented by an escutcheon plate made from Kohler’s signature cast iron, providing a touch of timeless elegance that grounds the futuristic design.

The faucet’s design allows for precise water delivery even through its sharp angles, thanks to meticulous pressure control. The rocker-style handle adds to the faucet’s modern aesthetic while offering a smooth and intuitive user experience. The faucet comes in a striking “Haptic Orange” hue, a nod to Dr. Ross’s signature color. This unique splash of orange creates a visually captivating element in your bathroom, making a bold statement without appearing ostentatious.

The Kohler x SR-A Formation 01 offers a glimpse into the future of bathroom design (a future that’s different from the one with e-ink toilets as seen at Kohler’s booth this year at CES 2024.) It seamlessly blends innovative materials with cutting-edge engineering to create a product that’s both beautiful and functional. With its limited-edition status and bold design, the Formation 01 is a perfect choice for those who want a bathroom that reflects their unique style and appreciation for truly modern design.

Enjoy sheets of water through your fingers in sculpture-like faucet from Kohler

There are some things that you use every day that serve a certain function and you don’t really care about what it looks like or how it’s made, as long as it does what it’s supposed to do. One of these things is the water faucet which you most likely use more than once a day (unless you’re stuck in bed and can’t get up). What if this simple piece of your life “exists beyond conventional expectations” and still does its job?

Designer: Samuel Ross for Kohler

The Formation 01 Faucet is a creation from Samuel Ross’ design studio SR_A for luxury bathroom and kitchen manufacturer Kohler. It doesn’t really look like your ordinary or even high end faucets look like. Rather, it was designed as a functional piece of sculpture that is still able to give you the water that you need when you want to use a faucet. The way it was designed is to give you a continuous sheet of water, whether you’re using it for cleaning or cooling down.

The faucet is made from an advanced composite material called Neolast, which is the proprietary material from Kohler. They were able to form it into that kind of shape since the material is able to offer “boundless form, unexpected texture, and rich, saturated colors”. It sports the color orange since it is the designer’s signature shade. Underneath the fauce is an embossed cast iron escutcheon plate to celebrate the collaboration between the brand and the designer.

The Formation 01 Faucet does look extraordinary and innovative, from the color to the seemingly-abstract shape. But what I really enjoy, at least from the product renders, is how the water comes out in a sheet, which looks and hopefully feels pretty cool (maybe literally even).

Kohler wants to ‘infuse’ your shower water with aromas that give you a spa-like experience

Imagine your Nespresso coffee machine and shower head had a baby…

Kohler unveiled what it believes to be the ‘future of bathing’ at this year’s CES – a shower infusion system that relaxes and rejuvenates you as you bathe. The way Kohler does this is simple – the Sprig Shower Infusion System includes a device that can be attached to any showerhead, which lets you add ‘Sprig Shower Pods’. Unlike your Nespresso, these pods don’t turn shower water into coffee… however, they do infuse the water with pleasant and calming aromas that give you a therapeutic experience as you bathe. Think scented candles and bath salts, but without the bathtub.

Designer: Kohler

Kohler is building on this system with a range of pods that offer a variety of fragrances like eucalyptus, chamomile, rose, lavender, lemongrass, along with minerals and ingredients that are supposedly good for your skin, like hyaluronic acid and sodium. According to The Verge, each pod provides infusions for “several minutes.”

The Sprig Shower Infusion System works with any existing shower head by sitting between the head and the water outlet in the wall. Water passes through the pod, picking up its eclectic blend of fragrances and chemicals, and then exits the shower head in the form of an aromatic spray of water. There is a catch, however. You can only use Sprig Shower Pods with this system, and there’s currently no way of breaking away from Kohler’s tight ecosystem. It feels a lot like the kind of business model Nespresso and Keurig built (first popularized by printers who bundled cartridges with hardware), with Kohler charging $21 for a 6-pack of single-use infusion pods. I’d keep them for special occasions, if I were you.

KOHLER Statement Shower and Stillness Bath can be good for the body, soul, and mind

At this week’s Salone del Mobile, Kohler is again proving how it can contribute to the world with inspiring products. It also doesn’t hurt that the brand is committed to environmental sustainability so expect a series of more cost-effective and eco-friendly products. For Kohler, it’s always about innovation especially when the topic is bath products as we can discover with the STILLNESS BATH.

Kohler serves a diverse client base, but everyone is given options that work or are best for a given environment. The Stillness Bath is yet another thoughtfully-designed product able to offer intelligent solutions for the home. It is an experimental bath system that combines water, light, fog, and even scent to create a wonderful and immersive experience for the senses. The main goal is to renew the spirit and soothe the body with the new products from Kohler. This special bathtub system is also intended to relax the mind, but we know that attaining such peace is not exactly an easy feat.

Kohler Stillness Bath

The KOHLER Stillness Bath is mainly a new bathtub designed with features that can tap most senses of an individual. The product’s name suggests bathing in this tub offers stillness to the body, soul, and mind. It’s like having a real spa at home but with no one attending to your mundane needs. If you live a busy life and have no time to go to the gym or spa, you can instead have your precious me-time in the shower. But, of course, it can only be relaxing if your bathroom has the right amenities like an efficient shower spray system, a large bathtub, and a roomy space where you can breathe and be free.

A Stillness Bath moment can definitely relax the mind and body—something we really need in these stressful times. The bathtub includes a system of lighting, fog, aromatherapy, and water—everything you need to have a delightful bathing experience. The only thing missing is music, but you can always bring your phone or any smart speaker with you to the bath. This thing is greatly inspired by Japanese forest bathing, so feel free to imagine you’re somewhere in the middle of the forest, enjoying the lake for another dip in the enchanting water.

Kohler’s new Alexa-enabled bath-fitting showers you with water as well as music

Kohler seems to have taken a massive liking to bathroom-singers with its new showerhead. With a halo-shaped design, the Kohler Moxie Showerhead allows you to fit in a wireless speaker into its negative cavity, giving you a luxurious Kohler-worthy shower with handpicked (or rather voice-picked) tunes to accompany you as you bathe.

Now the Moxie isn’t a new product. Kohler released the quirky showerhead+speaker combination in as early as 2012, but the new update (to be showcased at CES2020 next week) allows Moxie to communicate with Amazon’s Alexa voice AI, allowing you to ask it to play songs (or karaokes), brief you on the news, or order you some more shampoo. The Moxie speaker is detachable and docks right into the torus-shaped showerhead using magnetic action. The Moxie speaker is also completely waterproof, with an IPX67 ingress rating, and is tuned specifically to work seamlessly over the sound of gushing shower-water. The speaker comes with a playback time of 6-7 hours (enough to cover a week’s worth of long-baths), and along with the showerhead, should be available at the end of this year, and could cost anywhere from $99 to $229 depending on the options.
