National Public Data confirms breach that exposed Americans’ social security numbers

A data dump that contains 2.7 billion records of personal information for people living in the US, including their Social Security Numbers, have recently been leaked online. The data dump's contents were linked to National Public Data, a company that scrapes information from non-public sources and sells it for background checks. Now, the company has confirmed that it did have "a data security incident" wherein people's names, emails, addresses, phone numbers, social security numbers and mailing addresses had been stolen.

National Public Data's wording in its Security Incident report is a bit a vague and convoluted, but it did blame the security breach on a third-party bad actor. It said that the bad actor "was trying to hack into data in late December 2023" and that "potential leaks of certain data" took place in April 2024 and summer 2024, indicating that the hacker had successfully infiltrated its system. In April, a threat actor known as USDoD tried to sell 2.9 billion records of people living in the US, UK and Canada for $3.5 million. It claimed that it stole the information from National Public Data. Since then, the records have been leaked in chunks online with the more recent one being more comprehensive and containing more sensitive information.

The company said it worked with law enforcement to review potentially affected records and will "try to notify" individuals "if there are further significant developments applicable" to them. It also said that it published the notice so that those who were potentially affected can take action. The company is advising people to monitor their financial accounts for fraudulent transactions, and it's also encouraging them to get free credit reports and to put a fraud alert on their file.

The National Public Data is already facing a proposed class action lawsuit that was filed in early August by a plaintiff who received a notification from their identity theft protection service that their personal information was posted on the dark web. They argued that the company failed "to properly secure and safeguard the personally identifiable information that it collected and maintained as part of its regular business practices."

This CNC-Machined Titanium Razor will probably be the last razor you’ll ever want to buy

Just a step short of shaving your beard with Wolverine’s claws themselves, the Titaner TiGlide S1 is perhaps the coolest, slickest, and most durable razor you could grace your jawline with. Machined from solid titanium, the TiGlide S1 sports a gorgeous minimal design that leverages single-edge shaving. A microtexture on the titanium and a scalloped bar below the blade edge allows the razor to glide along your skin, while Titanium’s natural anti-bacterial and biocompatible properties truly make it the perfect pick for this razor’s design. Besides, it’s so durable, you’ll probably never need to buy another razor ever again.

Titanium has for long been a go-to choice for EDC makers, given its durable, anti-corrosive nature… however, the same reasons it’s perfect for EDC also make it perfect for a shaving razor. It’s durable, skin-friendly, rust-proof, and bacteria-resistant – all features that lend themselves wonderfully to the TiGlide S1’s design.

The TiGlide S1 relies on a single-edge shaving experience. Most razors on the market (we’re looking at you, Gillette) come with two, three, or sometimes even four blade edges, claiming that it provides a cleaner shave. The truth, however, is that the clean shave also comes at a cost of skin burn, caused by multiple blades grazing against your skin. The trick to a clean shave doesn’t lie in the number of blades, it lies in the angle at which the blade runs against your skin. Get that right and you’ll be left with a clean, stubble-free jawline that doesn’t turn red from razor-burn. The TiGlide S1 achieves this by allowing you to micro-adjust the blade’s angle once you load it into the razor. A screw at the back lets you control the angle of the blade down to a fraction of a degree, letting you quickly optimize as you shave so you’re left with the perfect clean shave without the sensitive skin that follows after.

The razor’s design is incredibly simple, which is what I personally love so much about it. Rather than complicating things with multiple blades, pivoting heads, and aloe-vera skin-hydrating strips, the Titaner TiGlide S1 just nails the basics and does it spectacularly well. The razor comes machined from titanium, with a simple, low-poly-inspired design that may remind you of a certain electric truck’s form factor. The smooth handle may strike you as slippery, but it’s quite the opposite, with a design that’s fairly grippy even when being used with wet or soapy hands. A microtexture on the razor’s head helps it glide across your skin with ease, and there’s a scalloped bar right underneath the blade’s edge, which further helps this frictionless glide by allowing shaving cream lather to flow through its tiny grooves as the blade’s edge runs against your skin, finely cutting any hair.

Using the TiGlide S1 feels pretty intuitive if you’ve ever shaved before. Load half a blade into the razor’s top, before snapping the magnetic head on. Tighten the screw at the back till you get the blade angle you desire (ensuring everything’s locked in place), and you’re ready to go. You can use the razor for dry-shaving or wet-shaving, and once you’re done, a simple rinse under tap water cleans all the cream/stubble off. A single-edge blade is a lot easier to clean than those multi-edge ones that have loads of grooves in them to trap hair, and titanium is inherently rust-proof and anti-bacterial, making maintenance a no-brainer.

Once you’re done, the TiGlide S1 comes with its own stand that lets you vertically dock it. It feels almost anti-gravitational, the way the razor stands perfectly upright… although that’s precisely what’s so cool about the stand. This upright docking also allows the razor to dry faster, thanks to gravity, so your blade doesn’t rust (the blade’s still going to be made of steel with a diamond-like coating). If you’re looking to travel with your TiGlide S1, it comes with a nifty silicone pouch too, allowing you to carry the razor along with a few spare blades to cover the duration of your trip.

The TiGlide S1 stands majestically on its circular base

Dock it on your bathroom counter or carry it with you using the silicone pouch

Aside from looking undeniably gorgeous, the TiGlide S1 also champions sustainability. Just like printer companies, razor companies like Gillette make their money not by selling razors, but rather by selling cartridges. They control the cartridge market (you can only use branded cartridges with your branded razor, right?), which means you’re perpetually their customer. You also end up buying use-and-throw cartridges that contain blades and skin-soothing strips encased in a plastic outer cover, which is impossible to recycle once thrown in the trash. The TiGlide S1 has none of that. All you need is a simple pack of shaving blades (choose a good quality one for a great shave) and you’re good to go. The blades break in half before mounting within the TiGlide S1, and it’s recommended you change the blade every 5-10 shaves, so each complete blade lasts anywhere up to 20 shaves.

Although it isn’t specifically guaranteed, your Titaner TiGlide S1 should last you a couple of lifetimes thanks to its titanium construction. Each TiGlide S1 starts at a discounted $129, comes with the silicone pouch included, and ships globally. An extra $12 also gets you the titanium base/stand.

The Kemi Tiny Home Is A Scandinavian-Influenced Dwelling With A $50k Price Tag

Called the Kemi, this tiny home by Dragon Tiny Homes is heavily inspired by Scandinavian design and is a simple and affordable house. Kemi is an excellent fit for those who want to use it as a vacation home or guesthouse. It is founded on a double-axle trailer and features a length of 20 feet. The home has a finish of black standing seam metal siding with wooden accenting.

Designer: Dragon Tiny Homes

The Scandinavian design inspiration is quite subtle, and not very in the face. It is reflected in the light hues and open layout, while the interior is quite cozy and light-filled. Generous glazing, as well as the absence of a bedroom upstairs, helps in creating a home that is pretty lovely and spacious. The interior was kept quite small, to ensure too much wasn’t fitted into a compact space. The interior measures 160 sq ft, and is laid out on one floor. A glass front door leads you to the kitchen, which is quite tiny and basic. The kitchen includes cabinetry, a sink, as well as sufficient space for appliances.

The opposite end of the home includes a bedroom which includes a double bed. The home doesnt contain a living room, but there is more than enough space to accommodate a small sofa or some other seating piece. The wall contains a mini-split air-conditioning unit, while the home also includes a ceiling fan.

The bathroom isn’t connected to the rest of the home, and you can enter it via the kitchen. The bathroom contains a sink, shower, and a flushing toilet. A storage loft is integrated above the bathroom, and this can be converted into an upstairs bedroom if the need arises, but at an additional cost, of course. The Kemi tiny home is a simple and sophisticated house that captures the best of Scandinavian design influence, without it getting too extravagant or evident. If you’re looking for a cute and cozy vacation home for your family and you, then the Kemi is a good choice indeed.

Biomorphic handles on these ceramic mugs add a touch of nature and quirk to lifestyle design

Jessica Thompson-Lee, a ceramic artist and educator originally from Kansas City, MO, now thriving in Brooklyn, New York, is transforming the way we think about ceramics. Her work is an exploration of the dynamic relationship between form and function, with each piece inviting a tactile journey as much as a visual one. Thompson-Lee’s creations don’t just sit on a shelf, they beckon you to touch, to hold, and to explore their intricate, biomorphic designs.

Designer: Jessica Thompson-Lee

Inspired by the organic beauty of coral reefs, cellular structures, and the delicate networks of mycelium, her pieces are alive with movement. Handles on her mugs, for instance, aren’t mere attachments, they stretch and sprawl like living extensions of the vessel itself, creating web-like patterns that challenge the very idea of how a mug should be held. Each curve and twist invites you to find new, playful ways of interacting with the object, transforming the simple act of holding a mug into an engaging sensory experience.

However, as beautiful as these designs are, one might wonder about their ergonomics. How comfortable is it to actually put your fingers through those differently shaped holes, and what kind of grip can one get? The intricate designs may offer visual allure, but they could pose a challenge when it comes to practical use. The unconventional placement of the handles might make it difficult to get a secure hold, raising concerns about the balance between art and utility. The delicate structure, while visually striking, might make one hesitant to use the mug for its intended purpose, fearing that it could break. But, you would never know until you actually hold one, it might just surprise you with great comfort. Either way, the piece can definitely add value to your space with its charm.

The magic of Thompson-Lee’s work doesn’t just lie in the finished product but in the journey of its creation. In her Brooklyn studio, she begins each piece with what she calls “sketching with clay,” an approach that’s as spontaneous as it is deliberate. With a squeeze bottle filled with liquid clay, she lets her hands guide the design onto a plaster slab, embracing the unpredictable nature of the process. This element of surprise and fluidity infuses her work with joyful spontaneity, making each piece as unique as the moment it was born.

Once the vessel takes shape on the wheel, Thompson-Lee shifts to the meticulous hand-building phase. With an exacto knife, she carves handles from thick slabs of clay, carefully refining the form until it’s just right. After smoothing the edges with a damp sponge, the handle is attached to the mug, which then undergoes its first firing. But the journey doesn’t end there. Layers of intricate patterns and vibrant glazes are added post-firing, transforming the piece into a vivid, abstract work of art.

Thompson-Lee’s creative exploration doesn’t stop at mugs and vases. She’s pushing her biomorphic designs into new territories, with plans for jars, lamps, and even small furniture. Committed to sustainability, she’s also experimenting with recycled paper pulp as a medium. Her unique, tactile creations are available on Etsy, where each piece offers an adventure waiting to be discovered.
