$3,000 Cybertruck Basecamp Tent is an unpolished homeless encampment missing key features

Before the release of the Cybertruck (for eager buyers), Tesla was developing an official accessory with Heimplanet to satiate the needs of adventure junkies. Known as the Cybertruck Basecamp Tent, the sleek and stylish add-on would turn the electric truck into a sporty off-grid camping vehicle for nature lovers.

The accessory has finally shipped for people who pre-booked and unfortunately, it looks nothing like the version promised in the 2019 renders and prototype. Just like the Cybertruck’s overblown bubble hype, the Basecamp Tent for the truck bed looks like a gray blob of unfinished and shabby product that’s more like a homeless encampment.

Designer: Tesla

There are a lot of strings attached when we consider the ease of installation as Tesla recommends owners bring the thing to the service center for initial installation of the brackets. Ideally, that should not be the case as one should be able to seamlessly install it on his/her own. A user on the CybertruckOwnersClub forum says that “forcefully popping out the Aeroflap” just feels like a less-than-premium experience. Removing or reinstalling the Aeroflap compromises the waterproofing at the front of the vault. Also, the plastic pieces/clips hooked from the Aeroflap are susceptible to breaking with repeated use.

Strangely the manual lists down the “Tent Mode” – supposed to self-level on a sloped surface – which apparently doesn’t exist right now. So, should we expect some kind of update or add-on fix it? The second-hearted approach in launching this product is evident from the small little gripes. On a positive note, the Roof Peak clips are easy to locate and attach to the roof, as they fit along the triangle section of the truck’s window. This helps maintain the structural integrity of the tent, and once everything is in place, inflate the tent to set up the base for the night. Another advantage is the space under the stowed basecamp to store essentials. Not to mention the lightweight aesthetics and the use of premium materials.

If the price had been reasonable, my perspective would have been different about all the shortcomings in features and the overall design. But shelling out $3,000 for this unfinished accessory that’s a handful while installing and uninstalling, is not at all justified!

Inflatable tent can be pitched on the ground, water, and trucks

Camping doesn’t appeal to me at all but there are a lot of people out there who would like to spend a night in the great outdoors one way or another. Tents and camping equipment have improved so much over the years and now it’s not just about pitching a simple tent on the grounds, although some still like to do that if they want to go rough and rustic. But if you prefer something a little more “sophisticated”, there are now a lot of options out there.

Designer: Life Cube

One such camping tool is the Life Cube tent, particularly the LC-8 model that will appeal to recreational campers. The previous version of this inflatable tent was ideal for disaster relief and military operations, the company decided to create a smaller and more portable version that can be used by campers and other occasional outdoor enthusiasts. And it can be used on the ground, on top of a truck, and even on the water. They also say it can fit up to 6 people although just from looking at the photos, it might be a little cramped.

If uninflated, all the parts and components of the LC-8 tent can fit into two carry bags that can fit into a car trunk, weighting just around 45kg. You would need around 10 minutes to set it up and inflate it if you’re using a 12-V inflator. Fully inflated, it’s around 8 x 7 feet with a 6.5 foot high roof. You can strap the body into the base and either pitch it on the ground, set it up on a truck bed, or use it as a floating base camp on a lake as long as you tie it to a dock or a tree. Around 2 (probably strong) people can carry it around once inflated.

The Life Cube LC-8 is a but more expensive than the usual tents as it is priced around $2,750. But if you’re often in need of a portable tent anyway, you’ll get your return of investment quickly. And since it’s also derived from the heavy-duty military-grade design of the original LC-12, then you know it should probably last for a long time.

Hitch-mounted Thule Outset dismounts to become rooftop-style tent for ground camping

Car campers have long yearned for a solution that combines the convenience of vehicle camping with the adventure of ground camping. While roof-mounted pop-up tents have enhanced the freedom of vehicle camping, ground camping has been left to the hands of tents that fit into the boot of the car and take a great deal of effort to set up.

Well, get ready to be excited because Thule has stepped up to the cause with its Outset tent, set to redefine the way we camp on four wheels. It is a tent that hitches up to the back of your car or truck; accompanies you on your journey to the great outdoors; and when the time comes, it provides a comfortable haven for the night camping on the ground.

Designer: Thule

The Thule Outset tent is a game-changer in design to usability.  It is a hitch-mounted tent that’s tailored for comfort and designed for adventure. Unlike traditional rooftop tents that sit on a separate platform, the Outset is a single integrated tent made exclusively for hitching. The Outset is cleverly restructured as a folding soft-shell tent resembling the size and shape of a hitch-mounted cargo box.

This interesting design ensures that the Outset doesn’t obstruct your rearview when driving, while the hitch arm tilts into different positions to allow convenient access to the tailgate. Setting it up is as easy as hitching the Outset: When you arrive at your destination, detach the Outset from the hitch ball. Unfold the tent atop an accompanying stand, that uses telescoping legs to level up on uneven surface, and you’re good.

Inside the Outset, you’ll discover a flat sleeping platform complete with a cozy mattress and lighting, offering all the comforts of a rooftop tent. Say goodbye to uncomfortable nights on the ground; the Outset promises a peaceful slumber under the stars on the ground, yet at a convenient height from the ground. Offering a rooftop-style tent – with similar comfort – on the ground means your vehicle is free to explore during the day without the extra weight and bulk of a tent.

The Thule Outset is still in development, with a planned launch set for summer next year. This exciting new addition to the world of camping promises to provide car campers with the best of both worlds: the freedom of vehicle camping and the thrill of ground camping. If it appeals, keep your eyes peeled for the Outset!

How this innovative 3-in-1 tent system makes outdoor camping as comfy as being indoors

There has been a great deal of interest in enjoying the wide outdoors once again, especially now that some modern conveniences are already available. Solar-powered portable batteries and small appliances give access to gadgets, cold drinks, and even a hair dryer while off the grid. That said, you will still have to wrestle with the elements, which can be unpredictable, not to mention bugs and rocks that make sleeping under the stars feel less romantic than it sounds. Fortunately, you don’t have to sacrifice your comfort or your sanity to be able to proudly say you’ve experienced outdoor camping, especially with this 3-in-1 outdoor tent that makes you feel at home even if you’re far from home.

Truth be told, having access to electricity is secondary compared to having proper and comfortable shelter when camping outdoors. Common tents simply provide the basics of putting a flimsy roof over our heads, while campers are too much of an investment for just the occasional outdoor adventure. It almost seems as if having a comfortable indoor-like experience outdoors is just a dream, but that dream is finally coming true with the Space Acacia, a modern camping system that delivers a spacious weatherproof tent, a comfortable and durable air floor, and a temperature adjusting canopy to keep the rain and cold away, all in a single, portable package.

Expedition Grade Inflatable Air Floor – The heavy-duty 4-ply air floor is designed to handle the toughest conditions, including rocks and rugged terrains.

Maximum capacity of over 4000 lbs.

Built for the Wind – Level 8 wind resistance, PU2000 water protection and CPAI-84 compliant fire protection.

The Acacia tent is chock-full of innovative features, each one contributing to the comfort and safety of its occupants. The unconventional hexagonal shape not only provides more space but better stability as well, able to withstand level 8 winds, while its Oxford 300D material will keep you protected from downpours of up to 2,000mm. Best of all, setting up the tent only takes around 20 minutes thanks to an ingenious pop, push, and pull mechanism. And when the adventure is all done, the Space Acacia folds up and easily fits into pickups, SUVs, and even mid-sized vans.

The patented air ventilation structure enables speedy airflow so you can feel the summer breeze. The canopy helps maintain a 10℉ warmer temperature than the outside when in its close-on position.

The tent’s Air Floor is a true wonder, redefining comfort in outdoor camping. The carpeted and inflatable floor is made up of a heavy-duty 4-ply construction that’s similar to those used in expedition-grade inflatable kayaks. With PU2000 waterproof coating and a maximum capacity of 4,000lbs, the Air Floor not only stays clean and dry, it can even handle the kids who might have just had too much sugar before bedtime. As a bonus, the Air Floor also lets the Acacia float on water, making it perfect for fishing as well.

Beyond Land – With its inflatable air floor, the Space Acacia can effortlessly float on water.

Last but definitely not least, the Acacia’s large canopy protects you and your family or friends from even the harshest of unexpected weather changes. It provides SPF50+ protection when the sun is blazing but keeps the heat inside when it’s freezing outside. When draped and closed around the tent, it can keep the temperature inside 10℉ warmer than the outside, making the Space Acacia ideal for use no matter the season or time of year. With 12 fun color options to choose from and two size models that can accommodate as many as three or six persons, the Space Acacia revolutionizes the outdoor camping experience by providing not only convenience but also the same comfort and safety that you enjoy indoors.

These eco-friendly pop-up shelters can be transported in a suitcase

In some of the futuristic tv shows or movies that we watch, we see things that seem small but contain multitudes inside or that are actually big when unpacked. We’ve come to the point though that these are not just sci-fi things but actual, real-life products or at least prototypes. We’ve seen some literal pop-up things that can easily be packed, transported, and then unpacked and constructed, solving some problems we may have when it comes to portability and assembly.

Designer: Maawa

Maawa X is a waterproof and solar-powered pop-up housing solution that can be used for emergency or refugee situations or even for homeless camps that need sturdier housing. While it is still patent-pending, it is a very innovative kind of house that can fit into a suitcase when being transported and can fit 1-2 people when unfolded as it is able to expand to a 3.5 cubed meters house. You don’t even need tools or complicated kinds of assembly lines when putting it up as they say it’s basically like assembling a box.x

The entire house is constructed from cardboard but it is integrated with solar panels so it can protect you from weather conditions (although extreme weather may be too much of course) and give you power as well. It weighs only 13.7 kg so it can be transported through a suitcase to anywhere in the world where it is needed. It is also more eco-friendly than the plastic tents that are used in most settlement camps. The material is recyclable and biodegradable and can be re-used or turned into something else after it has been used.

The Maawa X also has a digital infrastructure so that the organizations can keep track of the units across various sites where they will use it. They are hoping that these eco-friendly shelters will be a solution for millions of people worldwide who may be in need of temporary housing. Hopefully these emergency shelters are sturdy enough to keep the people inside them safe and secure in the short time that they are in need of them.

Expansion tent concept brings better habitability and improved durability

If you go camping regularly, sometimes during different seasons and with different people, you probably have different kinds of tents that will suit the environment and the company. But what if you could have just one tent which you can adjust and change the shape to suit your needs and the number of people that can stay inside? Of course you would want to have that one instead of having several at your disposal (unless you plan to collect different kinds of tents of course).

Designer: Yeonguk Choi

The 2/3 home is a concept for a backpacking tent that can be expanded, folded, and changed depending on what you need, what season it is, and how many people will be staying inside. It’s a combination of tunnel-type tents and alpine tents but with supposedly much easier ways to assemble, pack, store. The designers experimented with different kinds of materials and types of tents until they were able to find and develop a concept that can hopefully become an actual multi-functional tent.

Using woodwork and nylon 15D fabric in the trial and error phase, they were able to come up with something that works using 20D fabric and Monolite lip-stop nylon mesh for the ventilation part. They also used various plastic subsidiary materials for the other parts and DAC press fit 8.7mm for its tent pole. Basically, the final product is “a backpacking tent that expands with you”. The Duo Mode, as its name states, is meant for two people with an alpine tent model while the Trio Mode is the expansion mode that can accommodate three people.

The Duo Mode is compact, easily installed with its one main pole and two ridge poles. Aside from its small size, it’s also built to withstand some strong weather conditions including strong winds with its bow-like bent tent. It’s also more “livable” than the normal alpine tent since the interior has a hexagonal shape. The Trio Mode is where you can add a separate tent extension to connect to the duo mode. Aside from being able to fit in three people, it’s more habitable because you get more space and is recommended for use during winter.

These tiny tent-like pods transform your office into your personal camp ground

After two years of working at home, some of us looked forward to going back to the office and interacting with other people. Well, some of us, not all. There are times now when I need to be productive but there are too many people around trying to distract you and get your attention. What I wouldn’t give to have a temporary tent that I can put up when I need to concentrate and then put back down when I want to socialize. Well, you can somehow do this with this freestanding pod and it’s pretty affordable.

Designer: Steelcase

While cubicles are the usual solution to create some sort of privacy in offices, not all workplaces can afford to have this. Sometimes there’s also not enough space to separate work areas through those modules. But the Pod Tent is something that’s a bit more flexible and also more affordable. Basically you get a tent-like pod (hence the name) that you can enclose your desk and chair in so you can get some semblance of privacy while you continue to work.

The aluminum frame gives it a more flexible and organic shape and is also pretty easy to assemble. It also gives a pretty different aesthetic to the workplace, like you’re somehow all on a camping trip while working. You can just leave your shells temporarily when you want to socialize or turn your chair around to talk to your officemates. It can also be used as a lounge or relaxation area if you already have cubicles in your office.

The Pod Tent comes with 3 options for fabrics (sheer, ascent, era) and can be in just one solid color or two color families. It does give off a more relaxed vibe and is not as stuffy looking as the normal cubicles or dividers we see in offices. If it’s sound proofing you need though, this doesn’t seem to be the answer. But if you’re looking for a different aesthetic and something that’s more affordable and flexible, then this is something you may want to try out for your workspaces.
