CMF-inspired clock concept with appealing aesthetics could benefit from a dose of connected features

The see-through aesthetics of the Nothing earbuds and then the Phone (1) have inspired numerous concept designs. All these products spill the transparency of consumer electronics hardware into forms we never thought of, but love. CMF By Nothing is a more accessible brand that carries the same design philosophy and we’ve not seen many CMF-inspired designs until now.

Meet the CMF Clock concept that reimagines the reliable ticker on your wall in modern attire. The design leverages the harmonious integration of color palettes, material choices and surface finishes to mimic the CMF’s philosophy. According to the designer, this ensures the final product is a true reflection of the brand and timeless design sensibilities.

Designer: Kedar Bagaria

The aspiration for this project is to elevate the status quo of the good old wall clock, creating a balance between both form and function. Also, the vision of the concept is to pen down a design that functions as a timepiece and elevates the aesthetic appeal of any interior space – whether it’s your home or office. The depth of perception is portrayed via the shorter seconds hand while the hours and minute hands are signified by the semi-circular shaped disks running along the diameter of the clock dial.

The color palette chosen is a balanced Sierra of white, grey, black and the signature orange. The concept is imagined in three different color variants – one emphasizing the whites, the other the blacks, and the last one going for an overpowering orange look. While the design here looks gorgeous for a geeky den, we longed for an integrated functional approach that is aligned with modern needs. Things like connected features for showing important notifications, calendar updates, schedules, or preferred pings from social media apps.

The technology to superimpose a thin smart display on top and connected hardware modules like WiFi or Bluetooth will enhance the overall appeal of such a consumer product.

Benchmade PSK ambidextrous folding knife is engineered for the survivalists

When you’re caught in the line of duty or are stranded in the wilderness and things suddenly begin to get serious, a knife can be your friend to carry out survival tasks like splitting firewood, starting a fire, skinning game, or opening a can. This is why survivalists do not compromise on what knife they carry in their backpacks. Cut, chop, dig whatever it is, a folding knife is a second choice against the fixed blade options owing to its complexity in design and risk of failure in hardcore tasks.

While many blade makers would settle for this perception, Benchmade in the US is redefining the wheel with a folder that is positioned to become a hardcore warhorse for camping tasks and survival experiences. Benchmade PSK, short for Personal Survival Knife, is an efficient and ambidextrous folding knife, engineered for outdoor enthusiasts inside-out.

Designer: Benchmade

I think it would be unfitting to back all the claims, but from the looks of this stunning folder, you wouldn’t want to write it off either. The corrosion-resistant CPM MagnaCut blade with a black Cerakote coating is the first instant heartwinner. For those who wouldn’t know, CPM MegnaCut is Crucible Industries’ premium steel that boasts toughness, corrosion resistance, and most importantly edge retention. The Cerakote finish enhances this quality manyfold, which the survivalists would leverage.

The interesting blade, measuring only 3.4 inches, houses – when folded – within a black G10 handle with a textured carbon fiber bolster. It also comes in a choice of carbon fiber handle. Measuring a total of 8.4 inches, the PSK, which tips the scale at slightly over 5 ounces, is built sturdy with a set of full liners. The “palm-filling” foldable knife features a quick and reliable AXIS Assist opening and locking mechanism.

Provided with a striking choil at the base of the blade to light a fire with a Ferro rod, this pocket-friendly survivor knife is a comfortable EDC you’d definitely want to try. It should be hand-washed and kept dry and lubricated, the maker notes. The Benchmade PSK retails for $450 in its carbon fiber model.

Transform Your Living Space into a Fitness Hub with the Highly Compact Gympad All-in-One Bench

There is a substantial increase in the number of portable home exercisers taking the crowdfunding route. The most recent was the table-size foldable rowing machine for an all-inclusive gym experience at home. During the pandemic, gyms were adversely affected by attendance; people confined themselves to their homes – stocked with exercise equipment somehow – and never looked back at gyms.

Arguably, this number has been constantly increasing since then. Even though, in most cases, this setup is nothing compared to the gear and variety at the local gym. To fill the void, compact all-in-one home exercisers, which look perfectly in place at home and are versatile to permit a range of workouts, are dropping faster than the gyms sprouting in my locality.

Gympad Bench is the latest one to jump onto the bandwagon of an all-in-one home gym system. It is a professional-level home gym that fits into a compact size for easy transportation and values the precious space in your apartment. Despite its small form factor, it can let an enthusiast indulge in a range of workouts, offering dumbbell racks, stretching space, cardio equipment, a strength training machine, and a bench among other options.

gif 2

Designed for everyone, who fancies a versatile home gym facility, but doesn’t have the luxury of extra space to create a gym, the Gympad Bench takes as little as 0.35 sqm of space at home. It is made to look like a contemporary piece of furniture; so, when it’s not in use, and is just sitting there unattended, it won’t look off. The compact bench will fit seamlessly in your living environment while opening up to various workout options and comprehensive strength training.

When sitting there on a bench, the Gympad hides all the equipment within, other than the set of dumbbells on the sides. The bench is equipped with a pair of wheels for moving it conveniently from the sitting location to the action spot when you need it. While the standard variant comes integrated with full-body workout machines like dumbbells and barbells, weight machines, leg presses, chest fly, and cable crossover machines; all fitted into one unit, its Plus version adds a rower to the equation, unlocking a whole new range of exercise options.

The Gympad bench is a smart machine that syncs up with your smartphone, using a dedicated app, to display workout data such as fat burns, range of motion, strength score, sets, reps, or even dynamic weight adjustments. Weight adjustments are digital and an external knob is added to control the resistance ranging between 16 to 80kg; the highest in a smart gym bench on the market, the company behind the Gympad claims. Further stating that unlike most other home gyms competitors, which require subscriptions to use their training modules, Gympad bench delivers a comprehensive app for no additional fee.

Gordon 20-in-1 Multi-tool packs everything essential for an outdoor trip at the fraction of a price

If you reside in the US, Harbor Freight is a good option to seek for anything related to multi-tools. Their in-house brand Gordon caters to survival and outdoor products that can have anything from an emergency kit to a high-grade metal detector. Having added functionality and the perk of added tools is their USP when compared to the likes of Leatherman or Gerber.

Their latest multitool reiterates that fact, as functionality takes precedence without compromising in the number of tools at your disposal. In fact, the 20-in-1 Multi-Tool comes with useful options like the freedom to go for both pliers or scissors without having to choose one. The regular pliers also double as needle-nose pliers and on the other side there are a pair of scissors, wire stripper, and a window breaker.

Designer: Harbor Freight

You’ll never be left longing for a tool when this stainless-steel multi-tool is around. On the side of the scissors rest the saw, gut hook, screwdriver and bit driver. The other side holds the can opener, crimper, gut hook, three different files (a diamond coated one, wood infused and metal one), and a 2.86 inches long serrated knife. When opened fully, the accessory reveals an eight-inch ruler too. While in closed configuration, the multi-tool measures 4.06 inches in height and 1.53 inches in width. The Total weight of approximately 300 grams (including the packaging, woven polyester pouch and belt clip) is lightweight enough to carry in your pocket.

Other than that, the multi-tool does everything your trusted $200 Leatherman would do. Sure, it does not come with a clear-cut warranty, but still it does the job at a reasonable price of $40. Obviously, this accessory is for casual campers and someone who doesn’t require a top-notch multi-tool every time they undertake a dangerous adventure. If you happen to have a Harbor Freight store nearby, the multitool is up for grabs right now. For those seeking to buy it online, sales will become available by mid-August.

The 2025 VW ID.Buzz gets 3 full-fledged Campervan Upgrades courtesy Peace Vans

Of course, the future of van camping is electric. Arguably, in that future, the much-anticipated all-electric ID.Buzz from Volkswagen is going to be the lead. This modern, electrified variant of the retro VW Bus was expected in a campervan variant. Still, the company thought otherwise, and pushed the release back to fall 2024, citing lack of demand on the market as the reason for its thoughtful delay.

Before the camper version of the electric VW Bus can hit roads, there is a hardcore VW campervan repair and restoration outfit in Seattle, United States, by the name of Peace Vans that has introduced three fitting options to uplift the 2025 ID.Buzz into a capable campervan right from the word go when launched. Two options: either purchase an ID.Buzz directly from Peace Vans with your choice of the camper conversion option, or bring your own vehicle and return with it ready for the camping excursions.

Designer: Peace Vans

Peace Vans has been at the forefront of retrofitting Volkswagens with camping solutions. Furthering its experience, it has three customizable units for camping enthusiasts who want their ID.Buzz to an adventure-ready vehicle. These are Buzz.Box, Buzz.Box.Sleeper, and Buzz.Camper. Ideal for tailgating or a day ride with a kitchen integrated into the back of the vehicle, the campers can go with the Box. But if you want the Box with a sleeping solution, opt for the Sleeper or you can go with the Camper for a full-fledged camp on wheels with a queen bed and indoor kitchen.

The Box, as we said, is designed for day trips. It comprises a kitchen complete with an integrated cooktop, a fridge, a sink, and some prep area. The Box would fit in the back of the ID.Buzz and would require the third-row seats removed to accommodate the kitchen setup. If you want some sleeping area along with the Box kitchen – so you can spend at least a weekend in the wilderness – choose the Sleeper option that includes a fold-out bed to transform the back of your van into a comfortable sleeping area.

For the more hardcore, of course, is the Camper add-on that would convert the ID.Buzz into an ultimate adventure van with a fully functional internal kitchen, a queen-sized bed, storage cabinets, and much more. The Camper unit would require the removal of both rows of seats, leaving you with just two seats up front. If you’re a couple wanting a campervan, you shouldn’t look beyond this. To make the integration somewhat lucrative for you, the three units are fairly priced by Peace Vans. The Buzz.Box would be $7,995, while Buzz.Box.Sleeper would cost $10,995. The price of the Camper unit is still under wraps even though the company has started taking pre-orders for all its variants with delivery expected in November.

New collab Sneaker “Reebok Alien Romulus” to Launch on August 27

Fashion brands and movie franchises have had long-term associations that consumers have appreciated and happily embraced. One of them particularly is the Reebok and Alien movie franchise that has been as cherished in the fight against the Xenomorphs as it has been back here on Earth.

The two brands first got into a collaboration for one of the most iconic pairs – featured in the 1986 Aliens movie – in 2016. Now with the new edition of the movie on the brink of hitting cinemas – on August 16 – the two are again combining to release a new sneaker collab in the form of the Reebok Alien Romulus.

Designer: Reebok x Alien

The new retro-inspired sneaker – worthy of contemporary sneaker culture – is arguably one of the finest in the three brand collabs – in 2016, 2020, and now in 2024. Reebok Alien Romulus shares the similar aesthetics of the 2016 “Alien Stomper” sneaker pair, and arrives in a worn-out white and red colorway. The tattered appearance is touted to have several Easter eggs concealed throughout the shoe.

This distressed Romulus sneaker features an all-leather upper, and Reebok banding on the lateral and tongue, while it has a Weyland-Yutani logo on the heel. The midsole is EVA foam and the silhouette has a grippy traction sole in red. The sneakerheads will recognize the shoe from the upcoming film Alien: Romulus.

Arriving in a similar style to what you would see in the movie, the Reebok Alien Romulus sneaker is scheduled to release on August 27, 2024, about 10 days after the movie premiers. The official images are out and will likely retail at $170.

Super dad hand-crafts a working Apple Car concept out of wood for his son

The dream of the electric Apple Car has vanished after much speculation, and finally the painful official closing of the Project Titan by the Cupertino-giant after a decade of R&D. While millions were invested in the exciting project, Apple ditched the adventurous plan this year.

However, ND Woodworking Art, the YouTube DIY channel by Trương Văn Đạo, a Vietnamese craftsman has his version that suggests Apple should have gone ahead with the venture. The skilled dad has created some of the most amazing wooden cars for his kids, and this time around he has bowled me over with the Apple iCar. His son has to be one of the luckiest kids on the planet, and perhaps the only one to own a functional Apple Car. Even though it’s a custom DIY with no association with the consumer electronics giant, the final finishes of the electric car are stunning.

Design: ND Woodworking Art

The design of the aerodynamic-looking iCar starts with assembling the metal frame structure on which the specially cut wooden panels sit one plank at a time. The intricacy of the handmade design doesn’t end there as Trương fine-tunes the look beyond anyone’s imagination or crafting plans. The process involves a lot of detailing and intricate work. He first sands the wooden surface for the ideal finish that’s complementary to a supercar’s bodywork. Then comes a layer of coating for the glossy look.

For the steering wheel, seats and other consoles he uses a darker tone of wood to contrast the light finish on the outside.  To create a faux dashboard and infotainment system he puts a tinted fiberglass on Apple iOS-like interface. He doesn’t shy away from installing tinted fiberglass panels for the windshield and windows as well. Lastly, He meticulously crafts the Apple logos from dark wood, both for the front and back, and the wheel rims. For the headlights, taillights and ambient lighting on the windows, Trương uses LED lighting strips.

The final creation is simply breathtaking even though it is in an electric toy car powered by an electric motor on the rear. Seeing it drive on the local roads is more than just satisfying and dads should derive inspiration from this man for his effort and skill!

Ayrton Senna’s Legendary 1988 F1 car takes e-scooter form, courtesy Pure Electric

Adam Norris, father of the talented F1 driver Lando Norris, owns Pure Electric which burst into the scene in the last few years for its practical and future-oriented electric rides. The Brit company is on a roll lately with the release of themed electric scooters tailored for urban scenarios.

The fourth in the edition was the McLaren-themed e-scooter built on their trending Advance+ model. The final version in this series is the MP4/4 Special Edition e-scooter based on the nostalgic form of the McLaren team’s Formula 1 car seated by Alian Prost and Ayrton Senna. The legendary duo took the superior machine to its limit, extracting maximum performance and desired results for the team.

Designer: Pure Electric

The e-scooter comes with the same speedy performance, and is draped in the famous color-blocked red and white livery. This is not the first Ayrton-themed e-scooter in the edition as Pure Electric revealed the Senna Special Edition e-scooter in the Brazilian national flag colors. The performance of the 1988 F1 car-themed two-wheeler truly compliments the narrative of one of the most successful cars ever in motorsports history. It has a stable and controlled e-ride experience honed by a 710w peak power output and 31 mph range. This makes it apt for strong hill climbing and acceleration without eating up the battery power.

The IP65-rated Pure x McLaren MP4/4 Special Edition has a forward-facing stance for balanced racing aesthetics and a lower center of gravity. For urban practicality, the e-scooter comes with folding handlebars and foot pads that you can store in your car’s boot. Safety takes precedence as it comes with steering stabilization for reduced wobble and rear KERS brakes for control on every corner, even on rough surfaces. For nighttime navigation, the e-scooter has 150 lumens headlight and rear brake lights.

This special edition scooter will please motorheads who want more than a collectible for their living room or garage. Priced at approximately $1,250, the Pure Electric’s final e-scooter in the collection is one to have if you want to ride the eco-conscious wave.

Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 make first appearance as a display unit ahead of official launch

The options for premium true wireless earbuds have gotten more interesting since the Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 Pro debuted with the stem design. Now, users have more reasons to rejoice as Google Buds Pro 2 is just around the corner, according to reliable leaks. The new ANC earbuds for the Pixel ecosystem are slated to make an appearance at the Made by Google event on August 13. The Pixel 9 series smartphones will be released at this event, and we have our calendars marked already.

According to numerous leaks and rumors, the buds will have wings for a secure grip, and unlike the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro that have adapted the stem design (very similar to the AirPods) this time, the Google’s audio accessory will continue with the stemless aesthetic of the current generation. As it goes in the gadget rumor mill, the Buds Pro 2 display unit has been received at a Reddit user’s store.

Designer: Google

User [nothighandmighty] has not been shy about sharing the picture of the display model of the upcoming earbuds. For the most part, the new buds will be a lowkey upgrade to the previous version with incremental improvements that help them stay at par with heavyweights like Sony WF-1000XM5, Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II and Jabra Elite 10 Gen 2. The Buds Pro 2 will be smaller than the current generation Pro model which makes them comfortable and compatible with small ears. Also, the wingtip is slightly larger for a more secure fit and will be color-matched with the chosen option. According to a leak by Dylan Roussel, the earbuds will come in peppy color options including Raspberry, Mojito, Porcelain and Haze.

The case will be smaller as well which makes them easier to carry around in a pocket. [nothighandmighty] notes that there is a small speaker mesh at the bottom, most probably to beam sound for the Find My Device feature just in case you happen to lose them a lot.
