Automotive giants have been dipping their toes into the world of luxury high-rises, resulting in fascinating skyscrapers that are truly one-of-a-kind. Aston Martin, Mercedes-Benz, and Bugatti have all been competing with one another to make their mark in the real estate world, and profit from those big bucks. And recently the Aston Martin Residences Miami was unveiled – a truly exceptional sail-shaped skyscraper. The skyscraper was first announced in 2016 and was supposed to be completed in 2021. It is the automaker’s first completed real estate project!

The Aston Martin Residences Miami is located at 300 Biscayne Boulevard Way, positioned near the Miami River. It has an imposing height of 817 feet, fortifying its place as an impressive tower, and making it USA’s tallest residential building south of New York City. The skyscraper was designed by Aston Martin’s design team in collaboration with architect Rodolfo Miani of Bodas Mian Anger, and G&G Business Development. The tower brings to mind the image of Burj Al Arab, and it has a unique form that instantly grabs eyeballs. It features a steel and sail-like glass exterior, paying tribute to its marina location. An impressive curvilinear shape is teamed up with a massive terrace with an infinity pool near the top.

“Spanning four full levels between the building’s 52nd and 55th floors – all interconnected by a monumental and striking glass staircase – standout amenities consist of a two-floor fitness center with views of the awe-inspiring Atlantic Ocean, an art gallery, two movie theaters, a virtual golf simulator, business center, and conference room, kids playroom, as well as a full-service spa, beauty salon, and barber shop,” says Aston Martin’s press release.

The interiors of the Aston Martin Residences Miami are highlighted with the automaker’s design language, which is conveyed through motifs and various additions such as keyless doors in Kestrel tan leather, commanding door handles, and carbon fiber reception desk areas. The tower includes 66 floors and 391 luxury residential units.

The luxurious units include one to five-bedroom apartments, various lavish penthouses, and an ultra-exclusive “Unique Triplex Penthouse” which spans over three floors and occupies 2526 square meters. There is a lovely selection of colors and furnishings to choose from. There are also different amenities such as a private butler service, art gallery, spa, and more.

OpenAI strikes deal to put Reddit posts in ChatGPT

OpenAI and Reddit announced a partnership on Thursday that will allow OpenAI to surface Reddit discussions in ChatGPT and for Reddit to bring AI-powered features to its users. The partnership will “enable OpenAI’s tools to better understand and showcase Reddit content, especially on recent topics,” both companies said in a joint statement. As part of the agreement, OpenAI will also become an advertising partner on Reddit, which means that it will run ads on the platform.

The deal is similar to the one that Reddit signed with Google in February, and which is reportedly worth $60 million. A Reddit spokesperson declined to disclose the terms of the OpenAI deal to Engadget and OpenAI did not respond to a request for comment.

OpenAI has been increasingly striking partnerships with publishers to get data to continue training its AI models. In the last few weeks alone, the company has signed deals with the Financial Times and Dotdash Meredith. Last year, it also partnered with German publisher Axel Springer to train its models on news from Politico and Business Insider in the US and Bild and Die Welt in Germany.

Under the new arrangement, OpenAI will get access to Reddit’s Data API, which, the company said, will provide it with “real time, structured, and unique content from Reddit.” It’s not clear what AI-powered features Reddit will build into its platform as a result of the partnership. A Reddit spokesperson declined to comment.

Last year, getting access to Reddit’s data, a rich source of real time, human generated, and often high-quality information, became a contentious issue after the company announced that it would start charging developers to use its API. As a result, dozens of third-party Reddit clients were forced to shut down and thousands of subreddits went dark in protest. At the time, Reddit stood its ground and said that large AI companies were scraping its data with no payment. Since then, Reddit has been monetizing its data by striking such deals with Google and OpenAI, whose progress in training their AI models depends on having access to it.

Grand Theft Auto 6 will arrive in fall 2025

Grand Theft Auto VI’s return to Vice City is officially scheduled for fall 2025. On Thursday, parent company Take-Two Interactive wrote in its Q4 2024 earnings report that it’s narrowed GTA 6’s previously announced 2025 window to autumn of next year.

“Our outlook reflects a narrowing of Rockstar Games’ previously established window of Calendar 2025 to Fall of Calendar 2025 for Grand Theft Auto VI,” Take-Two Chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick wrote in the earnings report. “We are highly confident that Rockstar Games will deliver an unparalleled entertainment experience, and our expectations for the commercial impact of the title continue to increase.”

The sixth mainline installment in the open-world series will be set in Leonida (Rockstar’s Florida equivalent), focused mostly on Vice City (Miami). The game appears to have a contemporary setting, as opposed to the charming '80s cheese from 2002’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. US House passes TICKET Act to force event pricing transparency

On Wednesday, the US House of Representatives passed a bill that could provide at least some accountability for Ticketmaster and other live event vendors. NBC News reports the TICKET Act (not to be confused with the Senate’s separate bill with the same try-hard acronym) would mandate that ticket sellers list upfront the total cost of admission — including all fees — to buyers.

In addition to the full pricing breakdown, the bill would require sellers to indicate whether the tickets are currently in their possession. It would also ban deceptive websites from secondary vendors and force sellers to refund tickets to canceled events. The bill doesn’t appear to address price gouging or extravagant fees.

It now moves to the Senate, which is floating two separate event-reform bills: the other TICKET Act and a bipartisan Fans First Act. The latter was introduced in December to strengthen the 2016 BOTS Act that bars the use of bots to buy tickets, a practice that Taylor Swift fans (among others) can attest is still all too common.

Reforming the ticketing industry became a political point-scoring item in late 2022 after Ticketmaster’s Taylor Swift fiasco. The Live Nation-owned service, which has a stronghold on the industry, melted down as millions of fans battled “a staggering number” of bots. Ticketmaster said presale codes reached 1.5 million fans, but 14 million (including those pesky bots) tried to buy tickets.

Live Nation President and CFO Joe Berchtold testified in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee in January 2023, where he largely passed the buck to Congress to fix the mess. He suggested the government strengthen the BOTS Act, which one of the Senate’s bills would try to do. During the hearing, Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) needled the executive for dodging blame, accusing the company of pointing the finger at everyone but itself.

Representatives Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) and Frank Pallone Jr. (D-NJ) issued a joint statement on Wednesday about the House’s TICKET Act. “This consensus legislation will end deceptive ticketing practices that frustrate consumers who simply want to enjoy a concert, show, or sporting event by restoring fairness and transparency to the ticket marketplace,” the group wrote. “After years of bipartisan work, we will now be able to enhance the customer experience of buying event tickets online. We look forward to continuing to work together to urge quick Senate passage so that we can send it to the President’s desk to be signed into law.”

Artists publicly supporting legislation to combat the ticketing industry’s failures include (among others) Billie Eilish, Lorde, Green Day, Cyndi Lauper, Jason Mraz and Dave Matthews. “We are joining together to say that the current system is broken: predatory resellers and secondary platforms engage in deceptive ticketing practices to inflate ticket prices and deprive fans of the chance to see their favorite artists at a fair price,” a joint letter from over 250 musicians reads.

Airbus Unveils Innovative Racer: A Hybrid Aircraft Blending Helicopter and Airplane Features

Airbus has introduced a groundbreaking new aircraft called the Racer, designed to expedite flight times for emergency responders by combining the best features of helicopters and airplanes. The Racer, which stands for Rapid and Cost-Effective Rotorcraft, features airplane-like wings, forward-facing rotors, and helicopter-style top blades, giving it a unique hybrid appearance.

First Public Demonstration

For the first time, Airbus showcased its one-off working demonstration model of the Racer in Marseille, France. This event follows the release of new flight images and videos earlier in the week, highlighting the Racer’s capabilities. The aircraft demonstrated its ability to take off and land vertically like a helicopter, eliminating the need for a long runway. Notably, the Racer successfully completed its maiden flight in April.

Clean Sky 2 Collaboration

In an email to The Verge, Laurence Petiard, head of external communications at Airbus Helicopters, shared that a special ceremony was held for the company’s partners in the Clean Sky 2 project. This initiative involves collaboration with 40 partners across 13 European countries. Attendees at the event witnessed the Racer in both flight and static display, marking a significant milestone for the project.

Environmental and Performance Goals

The European Union’s Clean Sky 2 program aims to promote the development of low-emission air transport solutions, ensuring the competitiveness of Europe’s aeronautical industry on the global stage. Julien Guitton, head of the Clean Sky 2 project, emphasized the balance between high-speed performance and environmental impact. Simulations indicate that the Racer can reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 20% compared to conventional aircraft of similar weight, meeting the stringent requirements of Clean Sky 2.

Hybrid Aircraft Development

The Racer demonstrator – developed as part of the European Clean Sky 2 research programme – has an optimal blend of high performance and reduced operating costs.

Airbus has a history of developing hybrid test aircraft, including the X3 demonstrator from 2010. While Boeing’s V-22 Osprey, equipped with tilt-rotors, achieves higher flight speeds, it is primarily designed for military purposes and is considerably bulkier. Additionally, vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft have been in development for years, yet the anticipated era of flying taxis has not yet materialized.

The Racer represents a significant advancement in hybrid aircraft technology, promising faster response times for emergency services while aligning with environmental sustainability goals. As the Racer continues to develop, it may pave the way for new innovations in air travel and transport.

Build your own NAS Cloud Drive using a Raspberry Pi 4 and a 3D Printer

Why pay for iCloud when you’ve got your own personal iCloud at home?!

Subscriptions will be the death of our civilization. Imagine not being able to ‘own’ something because a company only allows you to rent it. You don’t own the movies you pay for on Netflix, you don’t own the music you pay for on Spotify, and you can’t own storage on the cloud because even though you’re buying 500GB worth of space, you’re merely renting the space on a cloud server somewhere. This strange arrangement has led to the rise of personal NAS (Network-Attached Storage) devices, with people choosing to simply BUILD their own cloud storage devices instead of paying Apple, Google, or Microsoft for them. The advantages of a NAS are many – you don’t need to pay monthly fees, your cloud-drive is private to you so you don’t have to worry about Google or Apple getting hacked and your data getting leaked, but most importantly, you can store and access files on your NAS from anywhere. Use it to take phone or laptop backups, to store/watch videos, or even build your own music/movie streaming library as the ultimate cord-cutting move!

Designer: Frank Bernhardt

If you’re looking to buy a NAS, there are quite a few out there, but if you want to try building your own, DIY-maker Frank Bernhardt managed to put together one using a Raspberry Pi 4 module, a few extra components, and a 3D-printed enclosure. His entire process is up on Instructables for anyone to see and make, although you’ll definitely require some technical knowledge to get the software up and running.

Bernhardt’s NAS runs on a Pi4 module, connected to an SSD. The entire enclosure’s printed out of plastic, with metal inserts to screw the NAS together. Instead of simple status LEDs, Bernhardt even put a functional screen on the front that displays messages and the time of day when sitting idle.

One of the primary considerations in this project is the design of the enclosure. The enclosure needed to meet several specifications: it should allow access to the power and network connectors from the rear while keeping the USB connectors inside for a clean aesthetic. The use of melt-in brass threaded inserts ensured durability, and the compact size made it printable on a standard 200 x 200 mm 3D printer bed. The design avoids the common 90-degree offset for connectors typical in Raspberry Pi cases, streamlining cable management. Moreover, the enclosure does not require active cooling, reducing noise and making it suitable for SSDs.

Here are the materials and components used in the entire build:

  • 1 x 4-pin cable with Dupont female connectors, either self-made or ready-made
  • Some PLA filament for your printer with the colors you prefer.

Printing the enclosure involved creating four main parts: the tray, device rack, side lid, and an optional stand. The tray required support structures for the connector openings and display window, which can be generated using slicing software. The rack holds the Raspberry Pi and hard drives, ensuring that the components are securely mounted. The assembly of the rack with the Raspberry Pi and hard drives necessitated precision, particularly when melting the brass threaded inserts using a soldering iron.

The next phase involved setting up the Raspberry Pi OS and configuring the network. Using the Raspberry Pi Imager, Bernhardt installed Raspberry Pi OS Lite (64-bit) onto a micro SD card. Essential settings such as hostname, username, password, and SSH enablement were configured during this process. Assigning a static IP address to the NAS ensured consistent network access, either through the Raspberry Pi OS, openmediavault, or a DHCP server, with a provision for regular patches and security updates

After the software setup, attention shifted back to hardware. The USB-C power connection and OLED display installation were critical steps. The USB-C socket was soldered inside the enclosure due to space constraints. The OLED display, used for status updates, was delicate and had to be installed without bending. Properly connecting the display to the GPIO pins of the Raspberry Pi was essential, ensuring to match the pin configurations correctly.

For the network connection, a keystone module simplified connectivity and future upgrades. By attaching a patch cable and keystone module inside the enclosure, the LAN port became easily accessible, accommodating both Raspberry Pi 4 and 5 models. This modular approach facilitates easy maintenance and upgrades, ensuring the longevity of the NAS setup.

Once the hardware assembly was complete, the OLED display software was installed. A Python script displays various system metrics on the OLED screen. The script runs at startup, continuously updating the display. Finally, the NAS software, openmediavault, was installed. This software provides a user-friendly web interface for managing the NAS, making it accessible and easy to configure. The installation was straightforward, and upon completion, the NAS was ready for use, with a commendable 500GB of storage.

Bernhardt’s Raspberry Pi NAS required a fair bit of technical expertise, but the process worked out MUCH cheaper than spending hundreds on a readymade NAS.
