Nebula is a transforming chair concept that looks a tad uncomfortable at first glance

Furniture like chairs and beds are made for human comfort. After all, we place our bodies on them to achieve some physical rest, so it would make sense that these should not produce more discomfort in the body instead of reducing it. Not all chairs, however, have to be super comfortable, lest you regularly get tempted to sink into your office chair in the middle of the day. Some chairs specialize in one purpose or another, and few try to meet the wide range of needs that we have for these seats. This rather unorthodox design, however, tries to do exactly that, and it does so in a way that makes efficient use of space but also looks pretty non-ergonomic despite its stated design goals.

Conventional chair designs have relatively flat seats and flat or slightly curved backs, sometimes cushioned with some soft materials. While this design is intended to help support the body in a seating position, it might not actually match the natural contours of the body. Our backs and posteriors, after all, aren’t flat, and our seats need to take that into account as well. The Nebula chair design concept, for example, tries to offer more ergonomic support for the body by using cylindrical pillows rather than rectangular ones with flatter surfaces.

Granted, it definitely doesn’t look comfortable, and some might question how ergonomic sitting on a round surface really is, but there is plenty of therapy and massage equipment that are designed in a similar fashion. More than just the shape of the pillows themselves, however, Nebula’s unique design is actually the way three of these pillows revolve around a central axis, almost like how planets revolve around a sun. This, in turn, allows the chair to take on slightly different arrangements that can support different seating forms for different occasions.

One such form, for example, is a kneeling chair where the person is half seated and half kneeling, a position that is seemingly becoming a fad. There’s a more traditional seat that has frontal support that may or may not get in the way of your typing. And, finally, there is the “comfort mode” that lets you lie on all three pillow cylinders, presumably for a more relaxing yet ergonomic posture. At the end of the day, you can also just “fold up” the chair and stow it away without taking up much space.

Admittedly, there might be some doubts on whether such a design is really ergonomic, not to mention comfortable. The Nebula design, however, does push the envelope and challenge traditional chair designs to accommodate changing work conditions. At the very least, this chair could force you to stand up and walk around every once in a while, which is always a good idea to prevent living a sedentary lifestyle.

Ergonomic chair support design will help correct your posture

As you get older, you wake up with all kinds of aches and pains even if you’re not that active. Actually, if you live a mostly sedentary lifestyle, that’s when you feel a lot of joint and back pains, mostly because you’re sitting in front of a computer most of the time. As someone that lives like that and has bad posture, I know it’s time to find an ergonomic chair or solution to help my poor back and neck. There are a lot of products out there although the comfort and convenience (not to mention the price tag) can sometimes be a hindrance.

The Curble Chair concept is a legless chair that can help users with bad posture be able to sit properly and therefore probably help lessen their back pain by correcting pelvic torsion. It’s actually something that you can place on top of your existing chair so it can help correct the posture of your lumbar and lower back while you’re working at a desk or sitting on a chair for a long time. It’s a high elastic support chair with an ergonomic design that looks pretty comfortable.

Their initial design wasn’t as perfect as they wanted it to be so after testing it out with customers, they were able to adjust things like the size, the comfort level, and added some other special features. They used 3D printed prototypes to actually test the legless chair. They made it a bit bigger probably to make it more comfortable whatever chair you’re putting it on top of. They also added a wave rib to support the weight of those using it.

The chair support also has two high elastic support to make it more flexible and more comfortable even as the product supports your back. The cushion itself can be removed for cleaning especially since you’ll probably be using it a lot and there might be some sweat, snack crumbs, and dust trapped in it after a time. I’m still not sure about the comfort level of this contraption but the priority is of course your posture so it may not always be that comfortable. That may be a small price to pay if I will get lesser back pain every morning or right before I sleep.

Marc Newson’s Task chair brings a “floating” seat, perforated back design

When choosing an office chair or something that you’ll use at home for work, you probably will choose something that is comfortable rather than a chair that is easy on the eyes. You’ll be sitting in it for around 8 hours a day so comfort will win over aesthetics. The actual winner would be a chair that is snug but ergonomic, attractive but functional. There are of course designers out there that will come up with the perfect task chair for those that spend much of their time sitting in front of a screen.

This new Task Chair that the Australian industrial designer has come up with for the German brand is an ergonomic chair with a single-line silhouette. What makes it stand out, even more, is its cantilevered shape which makes it look like the seat is floating. At first glance, the seat may not seem that inviting but it does catch the eye and once the user actually tries it out, they’ll realize that the design makes it even more comfortable.

It also comes with a tilt function that is actually hidden under the seat. You will be able to flip the mechanism vertically while you adjust the tilt and height of the chair according to what’s most comfortable for you. It is designed to fit all kinds of body types and having the chair adjust to your preferences gives you a “quiet confidence” to take on the tasks that you need to finish for the day. The designer believes “a task chair is a physical expression of a matrix of ideas on subjects as varied as material production, ergonomics, beauty, and social norms.”

The chair has a soft, rounded shape at the back and instead of just a plain design, you get a circular perforation that not only lets the chair (or your back) “breathe” but also draws people’s eyes to it. The seat’s texture has also been refined so you feel like you’re sitting on something luxurious. The monochromatic colors lets it blend into the surroundings so there’s a visual continuity to your office’s or room’s design. There are four color options to choose from: light blue, black, brown, and pink.

All in all, this Task Chair seems to be both comfortable and visually pleasing so it’s something that should appeal to those looking for both. As someone who sits in a chair for more than half a day, I can attest that sometimes the comfort level of your chair can make or break your day.

This smart chair morphs position + physical shape as your posture changes through the day

The Routine Chair designed by Yubin Lee and Minkyoung Song is a refreshing take on what the user would actually fancy getting comfy in for the rest of their digital work life. The smart chair (yes it is actually smart) adjusts the position of the headrest, arms and reclining angle based on the app-controlled schedule during the day!

How one feels while working sitting all day long in the office chair plays a vital role in overall productivity and well-being. The ergonomic comfort keeps creatives like us in the zone and I’m sure all you professionals might be looking for another stint of the work from home regime given the current scenario with the new coronavirus variant. Even under normal circumstances, having a feel-good chair to sit on without any discomforts has its own set of merits. In a marketplace filled with the likes of Herman Miller, Secretlab and Steelcase creating an ergonomic chair that betters them is a feat on its own.

This Styrofoam chair is designed to replace your trusty lounger by adapting to your body shape over time!

Like a good pair of jeans, the Tamable Chair only becomes more comfortable with wear-and-tear.

Styrofoam is like an improvised shapeshifter. It’s used for anything from packing material to insulation to play products. Composed of 98% air, styrofoam is well known for its shock-absorbent properties, making it the ideal choice for packing material. The rest of styrofoam is made up of closed-cell extruded polystyrene foam (XPS), a type of dense craft building material that gives styrofoam its rigid appearance and stiff impression. The buoyant nature of styrofoam and its dense, rigid makeup inspired Seoul-based Fountain Studio to design the Tamable Chair, an ergonomic, conceptual chair entirely made from styrofoam.

The Tamable Chair maintains the shape of a traditional lounge chair for optimal comfort. Over time, the Tamable Chair’s surface morphs to different seated positions and becomes more comfortable with continued use. Styrofoam is composed of 98% air, making it the ideal packing material. Styrofoam tends to contort and warp when pressure is applied to its surface.

Even as kids, poking at sheets of styrofoam taught us that the depressions our fingerprints make don’t rise. Fountain studio used that insight when developing the Tamable Chair to allow the styrofoam surface to adapt to different body shapes and seated positions.

Fountain Studio set out to create a lounge chair that naturally morphs its outermost surface to adapt to different seated positions. Finding the ideal building material, Fountain Studio’s Tamable Chair is made from styrofoam for its tendency to contort and bend when pressure is applied, giving the chair an adaptable and lightweight comfort that gets better with use.

Fountain Studio considered other buoyant building materials before settling on styrofoam. The Tamable Chair is entirely made from expandable polystyrene that was put through a CNC milling machine to give the block of styrofoam some stylistic ridges and a fully-formed chair shape. Like a good pair of jeans, the Tamable Chair only becomes more comfortable with wear-and-tear.

CNC milling techniques were used to give Tamable Chair stylistic ridges and a unique shape. The Tamable Chair morphs its surface and overall shape with each new seated position—the ridges level out to become a squeaky, flattened surface more similar to that of traditional chairs.

The Razer Iskur X is a $399 ergonomic throne designed for worthy (and wealthy) gamers

If it sort of looks like an angry cobra with its hood flared, ready to strike, know that it’s completely intentional. The Razer Iskur X is yet another addition to the company’s reptile-inspired gaming gear. The ergonomic throne is calibrated for the most comfortable gaming experience, with a durable multi-layered synthetic leather-clad, high-density cushioning, 2D armrests, and fully adjustable recline, tilt, and height. It’s also $399, putting it slightly on the expensive side… although not as expensive as Logitech x Herman Miller’s $1,595 gaming chair.

The chair’s contoured design is pretty reminiscent of a hooded snake in its striking position. To reinforce the reptilian references, the chair even comes with a snake-inspired weave on the seat, along with Razer’s signature black + acid green colorway. Given that gaming can be a day-long endeavor and that ardent gamers can spend hours in their seats without so much as shifting, the Iskur X comes with padded high-density foam cushions that contour to the shape of your body, for maximum comfort. The synthetic leather used on the Iskur X comes with a coating of resin too, making it much more durable in the long run. The chair sports a steel-reinforced body for strength and can take up to 299 lbs (136 kilograms) of weight without breaking a sweat… and a neat 3-year warranty on the chair should serve well, considering how much time you’ll be spending in it.

Chairs are one of the most designed pieces in the industry and reinventing that wheel is hard but Sano shows us that there is still more room for adding a worthy seat at that table! This high stool provides a healthy and playful seating experience.

Sano’s seat-bed is placed on an elastic ellipsoid which allows for the movement that makes it unique and also provides support while standing up. The ellipsoid is refillable and can be adjusted via air pressure. The added “bounce” gives a cushioned support when you sit or stand up which is makes it a friendly design for the elderly or those with minor joint issues. Its height creates a more open angle within the knees and the hips compared to conventional seating furniture which further makes the stool a healthier choice. The designer trio wanted to make furniture that would engage and create a more active sitting process that could be enjoyed by people of all ages and heights. The minimal design and evergreen CMF make it suitable for any interior setting.

Stools like Sano provide an option that is more accessible and inclusive for a wider demographic when used in settings like restaurants or waiting areas. It ‘lifts’ the otherwise mundane experience of sitting down and standing up, we don’t even notice the discomfort till we are presented with a more comfortable solution – that is exactly what a dynamic chair like Sano does!

Breaking away from conventional furniture designs, this stool reimagines your sitting experience!

The world of design is consistently inspired by chairs. Whether the design takes shape with ergonomics or craftsmanship in mind, the quantity of chair designs in circulation is definitely not lacking. But what if the chair never existed? What if designers had no preexisting prototype or blueprint for chairs before creating their own? Martin Luu asked himself those same questions before conceptualizing his own unconventional chair called Sado. Sourcing a type of non-existence as his main inspiration, Luu designed Sado as an experiment in unconventional design and the result proves the singularity that can be achieved without blueprints guiding the way.

Before designing Sado, Luu wondered, “What if the chair as we knew it never existed?” Eliminating all preconceptions regarding chair designs and all their variations, Luu began at ground zero. Speaking to this, Luu says, “As the archetype of the chair had been left unchanged for the past 6,500 years, an exploration was made to find a unique sitting form.” Settling on both a comfortable and distinct sitting form required a complete restructuring of the traditional upright chair and backrest.

Sado’s ultimate form resembles either a horizontal tree log or horseback, suited for a straddled seated position that encourages a healthy posture. Of course, just like more traditional chairs, the final seated position is ultimately decided by the user, or in this case, the sitter. When positioned atop Sado, the chair’s seat rotates freely to enable 360-degree accessibility to nearby objects within arm’s reach. Adjustable leg supports also provide a place for your legs to rest while helping to sustain a leveled spinal position. Constructed from bent steel and maple wood, Sado’s ergonomic structure is rooted in its simple construction and intuitive sitting method.

While I’ve never ridden a bull before, I can imagine if you’re any good at staying on, that core strength and a stable posture are key. While sitting on Sado hopefully won’t result in any jolting or cases of whiplash, it was designed to help strengthen the core muscles and align the spine so that if at any point you were to mount an electric bull, then you’d be duly prepared with a healthy mounting position. Kidding aside, Sado’s ergonomic nature is also reminiscent of sitting on the top backs of working animals like horses and donkeys, reinforcing both the functionality and inventiveness behind Luu’s design.
