Futuristic-looking chair concept immerses you in a world of sound

People are now becoming more aware of how poor-quality audio can ruin an otherwise impressive movie or game, but we can only do so much when we’re trying to experience these activities at home. Headphones and earbuds try to use smart algorithms to recreate the effects of 360-degree surround sound, but that’s only an approximation at best. You can also deck your TV room with the latest in Hi-Fi audio equipment but also lose some privacy in the process. There’s almost no middle ground, at least if you think of conventional solutions. This odd spherical chair is one such unconventional solution that tries to offer the best of both worlds to plunge you into your own personal listening space.

Designer: Swift Creatives Studio

The problem with ordinary home speakers and earbuds is that they often just blast sound in a single direction, either from our front or our sides. The way we naturally hear, however, is to take in all the audio waves around us, Which is why surround sound systems put multiple speakers around the room to emulate that effect, but at the expense of everyone within hearing range knowing what you’re doing. It would be nice if you could just sit inside a bubble and have the 360-degree listening experience without sacrificing your privacy, which is exactly what the XEO POD is promising.

Looking like a hollow polygonal sphere with its front chopped off, the pod-like chair actually hides as many as 20 speaker cones underneath the textile surface that lines the interior of the futuristic-looking furniture. It’s like having a mini surround sound system, one that’s confined to your immediate personal space to prevent sound from leaking out and bothering others. There’s a retractable overhead camera that can track your head’s movement and adjust the delivery of the sound instantly, giving the illusion of being in the middle of the scene whichever way you look.

The XEO POD isn’t just made for listening, though; it’s also made to make that activity as comfortable as it can be. Despite the hard, spaceship-like exterior, the upholstered interior offers comfort and style, regardless of the way you sit. A few extras also take the experience to whole new levels, like a swivel arm mount for a 42-inch TV and a side table with a built-in cup holder and wireless charging.

As a chair, the XEO POD isn’t limited to just one position either. You can sit upright while playing games or recline comfortably when watching a film. The pod will support you and make you forget about your surroundings, fully immersing you in the audiovisual experience in front of your very eyes and ears.

Tiny home concept will have you living in a futuristic capsule house

There are no signs that our population will stop growing any time soon, and the amount of livable space continues to shrink. We need more space-efficient residences that aren’t just towering skyscrapers, which is part of the appeal of tiny home trends. The majority of the designs for these petite residences seem to be made from wood or repurposed trailers and aluminum vans, mostly because these are the easiest foundations to work with. In the future, however, we don’t have to be restricted to these materials and plain rectangular shapes, like this compact capsule that definitely looks the part of a futuristic residence both from the outside and especially inside.

Designer: Antoniel Felainne

A capsule is admittedly not the most efficient shape if you’re considering either stacking houses on top of each other or joining them from end to end in a grid. But while space considerations are definitely important in an ever-shrinking planet, it is equally or perhaps even more important to consider the human factors. After all, humans will be living inside that space and they need to feel comfortable, safe, and, well, at home.

The ONCO Capsule House concept tries to deliver all those while also paying close attention to aesthetics. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but it’s hard to deny that the capsule’s shape is interesting and pleasing thanks to the absence of sharp edges and corners. The white exterior of the capsule gives it a clean appearance, though it will probably be difficult to maintain as time goes by, and this motif extends inside the capsule.

The interior of the capsule looks like a sci-fi movie set, with plenty of strip lights lining the walls and door frames as well as screens and panels everywhere you turn. Of course, other interior designs can also be used, though the capsule seems to lend itself perfectly to minimalist furniture with lighter color schemes. Although a capsule will technically have less space inside than a straightforward box shape, the circular interior actually gives the illusion of having more.

The design concept also includes provisions for having parts of the capsule actually transparent, like having floor-to-ceiling windows built directly into the design. Ideally, these would be tint-controllable windows so you can maintain your privacy when you need to but also enjoy the view when you want to. Constructing such a capsule house won’t be easy or cheap, but in a future where tiny homes are the norm, this could very well become a standard design anyway.

Transform Your Cutting Experience with Scissors That Double as a Box Cutter

How much does it take to change the world? Some people would immediately think of literally big world-changing events, but it’s actually the little steps taken each day that gradually build up to make a longer-lasting difference. The same is true for design, where some of the most significant improvements don’t have to be drastic or even conspicuous. Little improvements here and there all add up to a whole new experience that turns an everyday tool into a delightful encounter each and every time. Case in point are these sleek scissors that look almost alien in their form, bringing just the right amount of design innovation that not only makes it seem like a piece of equipment from the future, it even makes using the simple tool a delightful quest as you snip, slice, and cut through your tasks every day.

The most distinctive thing about these sleek scissors is their form. The drop-shaped handle is something you’ll rarely see in scissors, but it’s a small change that makes plain, boring shears look a little more interesting. Especially when those handles are made from transparent resin that, together with the organic shape, gives the scissors a unique character not unlike alien spacecraft. Of course, that alone isn’t enough to elevate the status of the tool, and indeed its biggest benefits are from things you can’t see but can definitely feel.

Many people use scissors as makeshift box cutters with often disastrous results, forced to precariously hold the tool with the blades wide open. The smart SEKI-TEX scissors avoid this dangerous situation by using a simple yet ingenious sliding mechanism to push one of the blades forward just a little bit while still keeping the rest of the scissors closed. This lets you swiftly and safely cut through the adhesives keeping the box shut like you would with an actual box cutter. And when you’re done, simply slide the blade back to its original position to keep your fingers and hands safe.

Given that use case as well as many other uses of the scissors, there is a real concern that the blades will eventually get covered in sticky sludge from these adhesives. As before, the solution is both simple and clever, coating the blades with fluorine to stop the sticky substances from building up in the first place. Now a simple wipe every now and then is all that it will take to keep the blades always sharp and ready to cut through work tasks.

Such an innovative design doesn’t come from the future and is, in fact, well-rooted in the past. Crafted by expert knife makers from the swordsmith town of Seki in Japan, these scissors are made with meticulous attention to detail, yielding excellent sharpness married to an exquisite and almost organic design. Whether you’re cutting paper or opening boxes, these sleek scissors promise to not only make each task feel effortless, they also add a bit of excitement to your daily work.

Wearable AI pin could “weave seamlessly” into our lives

Wearable “smart” technology isn’t a new idea by any stretch of the imagination. Fitbit long predated the original Apple Watch, and we’ve basically been able to outsource or remotely control functions of our smart phones for… well, nearly as long as we’ve owned smart phones. But it’s inevitable that new advances in tech will generate excitement around new product concepts – and since AI is on everyone’s mind lately – hey, wouldn’t it be cool if you could carry an AI assistant around on your clothing rather than on your wrist?

That’s the concept behind the Humane Ai Pin, which made a splash across the tech and fashion worlds last week when it landed at Coperni’s 2024 Spring Summer show on September 29 in accordance with Paris Fashion Week, where it was worn on the runway by several models – most notably, the famous Naomi Campbell.

Designer: Imran Chaudri and Stephanie Garcés (via Humane Ai)

Co-founded by accomplished ex-Apple design director Imran Chaudhri and ex-Apple engineering director Bethany Bongiorno, Humane Ai seems like it’s skirting away from direct competition against OpenAI, which is developing its own GPT-4-powered fitness wearable. This is because the Humane Ai Pin is meant to go anywhere but your wrist.

Instead, it functions as a high-tech lapel pin that’s a little bit bigger than a regular lapel pin – but thanks to its sleek and rounded design, it doesn’t even look out of place in today’s modern world. Not to mention, it’s purported to include a genuinely interesting feature that immediately leaps above everything else on the docket: a projection display that beams user interface elements and buttons onto your hands. You can see it in action during Chaudhri’s TED Talk in April 2023, titled “The disappearing computer — and a world where you can take AI everywhere“.

Alongside the Coperni reveal on September 29, Humane Ai put out its own press release where the company explained its vision for the pin, stating that “The Humane Ai Pin is the screenless, standalone device and software platform …designed to weave seamlessly into users’ day-to-day lives. The device is privacy-first, with aspects such as no wake word and therefore no ‘always on’ listening.”

Co-founders Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno also weighed in about their inspirations for the project, saying, “We have been admirers of Arnaud and Sébastien at Coperni for some time and our shared passion for the union of design, creativity and technology is at the heart of this collaboration. Our relationship with technology is changing profoundly, becoming even more personal as our devices morph into extensions of our bodies, minds and hearts.”

It sounds like we’ll be seeing hands-on details about the Humane Ai Pin on November 9, when the full unveiling of the new wearable is slated to take place.

The project originated from a simple curiosity about why robots, capable of assisting humans in their daily lives, have not yet become commonplace in residential areas, despite the remarkable progress of industrial robots. Research revealed that 86% of people still perceive robots as “cold, hard machines” that solely perform predefined tasks, hindering their acceptance as new members of our households. Which I personally relate to. If I had to get a full-blown conventional humanoid at home, it would feel like getting another unknown person at home for whom empathy and privacy are foreign.

To bridge this gap, Bopeep focuses on eliminating human fear of robots. They know that if we want to bring the amazing convenience and usefulness of robots into our homes, we’ve got to get over our robot phobia. That’s why Bopeep takes a different approach. Instead of just talking about how necessary and beneficial robots are, they’re all about creating a friendly and lovable image that melts our hearts.

Introducing the Coexisting Robots:

1. STEP

The Strongest Robot: Designed in the form of a stool, STEP is capable of moving heavy objects and performing strenuous tasks in our daily lives. With its sturdy four legs, STEP provides a robust solution while seamlessly blending into the environment. The position detection camera, cleverly hidden underneath, eliminates any visual discord, ensuring a comfortable coexistence.

2. MINGLE

The Gentle and Courteous Robot: Taking the shape of a side table, MINGLE showcases the gentlest and most thoughtful personality among Bopeep’s robots. Its flexible judgment of situations enables witty serving in everyday spaces, enhancing convenience and enjoyment in our daily lives.

3. TIDY

The Responsible Cleaner: Born as a wastebasket, TIDY serves as both a robot vacuum cleaner and a wastebasket. With its clean personality, TIDY ensures overall hygiene in the house. When users have something to dispose of, TIDY silently approaches with its mouth open, efficiently and quietly performing its duties.

4. CHEER

The Intelligent Mapping Robot: CHEER is the most intelligent mapping robot in the Bopeep series. It creates real-time maps of the house, providing spatial information to other robots while issuing commands. By connecting Bopeep’s other robots to the SmartThings Hub through CHEER, precise movement without expensive LiDAR sensors becomes achievable, significantly assisting in the integration of robots into households.

Bopeep’s robots are carefully designed to overcome the obstacles of their “overbearing presence”. For robots to seamlessly blend into our daily lives, they should not draw excessive attention to themselves or their existence. These robots have a very humble approach to tasks which fosters a smooth integration into our daily lives.

Furthermore, Bopeep’s robots bring vitality to human life through appropriate judgments in various situations. Unlike traditional robots that rigidly adhere to their predetermined purposes, Bopeep’s coexisting robots engage in small, human-like actions that resemble behavior, fostering a more natural interaction and integration into our lives. For instance, outside the bathroom, Bopeep may close its “eyes” to respect privacy, while its actual “eyes” are located underneath, eliminating any concerns.

Bopeep becomes a mediator for communication, encouraging positive conversations and new relationships between people. By providing a magical experience where objects come to life, Bopeep adds excitement and fun to daily tasks, fostering affectionate and intimate relationships between humans and robots.

Bopeep revolutionizes the concept of coexistence between humans and robots by introducing coexisting robots that eliminate fear, embrace warm personalities, and seamlessly integrate into our homes. With their unique appearances and practical functionalities, these robots serve as a stepping stone toward a future where humans and robots live together harmoniously. Let us embrace this integrated world, where robots become trusted companions, adding convenience, joy, and warmth to our daily lives.

This epic sky ring around Burj Khalifa is a sustainable gated community concept

Land is becoming scarce, especially in metropolitan areas where every square meter can cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars. With nowhere else to go but up, people have been building taller architectures, whether for business or for residence, paving the way for the sun-blocking towers of dystopian science fiction. Before things get worse, however, some visionaries have started to design structures and systems that are almost unbelievable both in their majestic beauty as well as sustainability. One such ambitious proposal wants to encircle the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest skyscraper, with a massive ring high up in the sky that is intended to smash the conventional ideas of gated communities and apartments in a self-sustaining manner.

Designer: ZN|Era

The Downtown Circle, as the project is called, stands atop five gigantic pillars like a majestic testament to human creativity and ambition. Although its 550-meter height pales in comparison to the Burj Khalifa’s towering presence, its encompassing size is enough to cover Downtown Dubai, hence its name. It’s a good thing that it’s really a ring rather than a closed circle; otherwise, it would permanently cover Dubai’s skies and give off a gloomy atmosphere rather than an awe-inspiring one.

Of course, it isn’t just sculptural art but is an artful vision of the future of human living. The ring is, unsurprisingly, designed to be a city, one that can sustain itself without descending to the land below. Instead of growing more buildings vertical, the structure uses horizontal space in the most efficient way, by going around a circle to have nearly double the occupancy.

More than just the sheer magnitude of its size, what makes the project really ambitious is what happens inside. Like a true city, not only will there be residences for people to live in, but also public, commercial, and cultural spaces. Two rings make up the entire structure of the Downtown Circle, joined by a continuous green structure that connects the five levels inside. That green “belt” named Skypark isn’t simply a support structure but also a green ecosystem that is the key to the ring city’s self-sufficiency.

This literal and figurative central component will be the location of the circle’s ecological treasures, providing not only agriculture for human consumption but also systems for generating sustainable resources from rainwater and the sun. Recreating some of Earth’s ecosystems, like waterfalls and even swamps, the Skypark will be what keeps people and animals alive inside the circle.

Of course, it is a vision that is admittedly on the grand and unrealistic side of the scale as far as current technologies and infrastructures go. Building the Burj Khalifa is probably a piece of cake compared to a humongous ring that will impose its presence on the people below, probably striking both wonder and fear because of the risks if a single structural problem were to occur. Still, the idea of a self-sufficient and sustainable city is definitely the right way to go, and we can always dream big while we’re at it. And as far as big dreams go, the Downtown Circle is truly up there, pun intended.

This vacuum cleaner looks like it came from the future to save you from dust

Protecting your house from harmful microorganisms and viruses isn’t just a matter of installing air purifiers and UV sanitizers in rooms. Keeping areas clean is also an important part of that process, especially when it comes to dirt that’s hard to see or materials that would emit harmful substances. Vacuum cleaners are, of course, one of the most common weapons in the war against dirt and grime, whether they be on floors, in corners, or in other places we can’t reach easily. The design of vacuum cleaners has shifted every now and then, sometimes embracing trends like minimalism. This design concept, however, goes in a different direction and heaps a ton of details on the vacuum cleaner, creating an appliance that wouldn’t look out of place in the robot-filled home of the future.

Designer: Roman Riazantsev

There was a time when the design of vacuum cleaners, at least the big ones that stand vertically, was pretty much standard. Its shape with a wide flat head and a bulky bag hanging from its body has become so iconic that it’s easy to identify it when it shows up on TV or in movies. Of course, design never really stands still, and soon vacuum cleaners have also changed their forms over time. Another common design involves just a hose attached to a boxy machine on wheels. More modern styles just have a long stick attached to a large canister that you can hold like a gun.

This vertical vacuum cleaner concept seems to combine the old and the new in a design with a more futuristic flavor. You almost have the same silhouette as a traditional vacuum cleaner, with that wide head and a rather bulky middle body. Its modular and configurable parts, however, are modern touches, especially when it comes to the sleek and smooth surfaces that embody this appliance.

Parts of the vacuum cleaner are specifically designed to give it a more futuristic or sci-fi vibe. The head, for example, looks almost like the front of a spacecraft, especially with its three bright LED lights that might be of help when vacuuming darker areas under furniture. The transparent area of the actual vacuum machine and the white and black motif are also typical of many sci-fi props.

It’s also futuristic in terms of intended functionality, like how the main body detaches to become a handheld vacuum. You could almost say that this is a handheld vacuum cleaner with a vertical vacuum dock instead. Additionally, its rod can be folded back for more compact storage. Given the size of its body parts, it’s not exactly impossible to turn this into a robot vacuum cleaner, merrily going about its way to clean your floors and then quietly folding itself into an alcove after it finishes its chores.
