LEGO builder Minibrick Productions recreated the iconic Miller’s Planet scene from the Interstellar movie with this tiny LEGO-based recreation that includes the ranger aircraft, astronauts Cooper and Brad, and the shapeshifting robots TARS and CASE. McConaughey and Hathaway come outfitted in their space suits, while TARS and CASE, the two robots feature repositionable arms that enable them to walk like humans.

Created by Annabella Hevesi, the Peach Easy Chair is a visually interesting chair that features an innovative mechanical joint solution that allows the foam to be shaped in a totally new and refreshing manner!

The joint enables the foam to be shaped without cutting or casting – the first method creates a lot of waste, and the second method is quite expensive. Instead, a new ‘tufting’ technique was employed to distort the foam and create the shell out of the chair.

Design studio Formway teamed up with the brand Noho to create the ergonomically sound dining chair called the Noho Move.

Why is it noteworthy?

Both the brands collaborated to create a chair that can support and facilitate hours of sitting. “Our brief was to bring ergonomic performance to the dining room — that isn’t really something anyone has done before,” said Formway design lead Paul Stevenson.

4. UMI Armchair

The UMI Armchair is designed by Rotislav Sorokovoy for the Ukraine-based furniture design company WOO, and it could be easily mistaken for a sculpture.

The large and chonky furniture piece has a soft sculptural aesthetic to it and is designed to allow the user to interact with it, much like children do. The shape and texture of the armchair have been designed to welcome and invite people in and encourage them to engage with it.

This simple well-designed chair is called the Grid Chair by SUNRIU Design, and it incorporates a few thoughtful details that truly set it apart. It incorporates flat elements to create storage spaces.

Why is it noteworthy?

The aim behind the chair is to tackle the issue of accidentally knocking over your coffee, or a glass of water while sitting on a chair or couch. The Grid Chair is made up of four planks of wood arranged in an interesting grid-like manner. The various lines of the chair harmoniously work together to create a neat grid that creates extended flat surfaces on either side of the chair.

What we like

  • The extended surfaces serve as storage spaces to hold your coffee, books, and other knick-knacks

What we dislike

  • Space-consuming and bulky design
  • The wooden edges of the extended surfaces could hurt young children and babies

6. Havana Lounge Chair

Designed by LAB15 for the Danish brand Eilersen, this Havana lounge chair is a cozy and chonky seat inspired by the Cuban chairs of the Art Deco period.

Why is it noteworthy?

The comfy and super-rounded seat features a pebble-like pouffe in its center which forms the main body of the chair. The bulbous pouffe can be accentuated with single or double arms and an optional backrest. The Havana chair is built of organic shapes, giving it a rather cozy and cushy feel.

What we like

  • Upholstered in a large range of solid-colored, textured, or patterned fabrics or in leather

  • Space-consuming and bulky design, not suited for homes with space constraints

7. Nebula Lounge Wood Chair

Designed by Italian design studio E-ggs for furniture brand Miniforms, the Nebula lounge wood chair is a versatile and unique chair that is available in a choice of three different bases.

Why is it noteworthy?

Much like the aluminum base, the wooden base features a tilt-and-return mechanism that allows the chair to dynamically respond to shifting sittings positions, while also providing the warmth and subtleness of wood to the chair.

What we like

  • Optimum option for homes with a generous amount of space

What we dislike

  • Not recommended for homes with smaller real estate, as it may promote cramping issues

8. Kainchee

The name Kainchee is a unique one for a chair. Kainchee quite literally means scissors in the Hindi language. And if you look closely, you can understand why the designer dubbed his design Kainchee.

Why is it noteworthy?

The chair does look like two pairs of scissors, from the bottom half at least. The star feature of the chair is its intertwining and geometrically intriguing form. A band of walnut wood forms the seat of the chair, while subtly interlocking with the ash wood to form the legs of the chair. The interlocking walnut and ash wood legs bring to mind the image of two scissors!

What we like

  • Unique design with utility + functionality
  • Invites users to have seats, and engage with others in a social setting, in turn enriching their social life

What we dislike

  • It’s a concept!

9. Sand Chair

The Sand Chair was designed by product designer and architect Koichi Futatsumata, and it was launched as a part of Tendo Makko’s Japanese Modern/80 Project celebrating the 80th anniversary of the furniture brand.

Why is it noteworthy?

The Sand Chair is the epitome of contemporary Japanese design, and it has a unique flexible build, that allows it to be converted into multiple seating options. It isn’t actually named after the sand found on beaches, it is named after the ‘sandwiched’ components that come together to create this harmonious chair.

What we like

  • Available in a variety of configurations – without backrests, armrests, or even bench versions

What we dislike

  • At first glance, it seems like a simple + basic chair

10. Big Chair

The Big Chair is designed to be a playful and amusing furniture design, that functions as a whimsical element in your home.

Why is it noteworthy?

It has an expansive and inviting seat that is intended for one person but can seat two people. The Big Chair was created by BNF founder Ben Newman, and he says that the over-the-top, and exaggerated elements of the chair are inspired by the ’80s maximalism and the Memphis design movement.

What we like

“The combined backrest outlines create a rhythmic sequence of rise and fall, with sofas coming together to form distinctive ‘V’-shaped silhouettes,” said Morgan. The backrests of the Valencia modular sofa are tapered at each end to reduce some of the weight from the volumes, providing the sofa with a clean and flowing form that brings to mind the image of rolling hills in a landscape.

Nestled in Nova Lima in Minas Gerais is Tetro Arquictectura’s Laguna House. The four-bedroom Brazilian house is amped with a stunning view of a lake, with mountains in the backdrop. It is a sleek and modern abode that perfectly utilizes the views and contours of the property it is located on.

Designer: Tetro Arquitectura

The beautiful Brazilian home is designed by architects Carlos Maia, Débora Mendes, and Igor Macedo, and is elevated on a rectangular core, and supported by a group of tall slender pillars. The lower level is sunken and it holds the three ensuite guest bedrooms, a covered terrace, an outdoor kitchen, and a dining area. While the main living spaces are located above it, with a rectangular concrete slab roof towering over them. The main living spaces correspond with a big square courtyard, and the master bedroom subtly cantilevers over the garden. It also holds a massive and impressive walk-in wardrobe. The kitchen, utility room, and staff accommodation are located in the same row as the bedrooms below. An external covered walkway provides access to them.

The minimalist home includes the main entrance which is built of a series of concrete steps that smoothly follow the contour of the land, leading you up to a covered porch, positioned along a courtyard garden. As you enter through the main entrance, you are welcomed into the main living space, which has an area for seating and dining as well as a kitchen. The home also includes a covered balcony with sliding glass doors that lead to it.

The entire home has a raw yet contemporary feel to it. Raw concrete is teamed up with natural stone and vertical hardwood slats for privacy and sun screening to create an inviting and warm space. Aluminum framed floor-to-ceiling windows mark the entirety of the space. The concrete roof is projecting and helps not only to reduce solar gain but also ensures that the sunlight reaches the interiors only during late afternoon. The home is simple but thoughtfully designed with the private spaces located on the main floor, while the guest bedrooms are kept on the lower level.

And, one such unique lighting design I came across is the Soft Serve Lamp – which quite literally looks what it sounds like!

Designed by Stockholm design studio Crème Atelier, the Soft Serve lamp was created to mimic a “swirly ice cream”, and is available in a range of adorable sorbet colors. The Soft Serve lamp is 3D-printed and is inspired by pastries and desserts, which in my opinion makes a great source of inspiration for lighting designs.

“We find that baked goods and desserts have very captivating shapes and forms,” said Crème Atelier co-founder Jacqueline Kessidis. “We were very intrigued by the creamy organic shapes of meringue and soft serve ice cream,” she added. “Soft serve lamp is inspired by the swirly ice creams and we like to compare the 3D printer with an ice cream machine.”

As mentioned before, the Soft Serve lamp is 3D-printed using a bioplastic that is made from recycled food packaging. 3D printing is utilized to create the unique swirling shape of the lamp. All the lamps are made to order, which makes the entire production method pretty swift and sustainable according to the agency. “Our starting point was to find a sustainable material and that’s how we found our way to 3D printing as a production method,” said Kessidis. “The biggest advantage is definitely the fact that you can go from an idea to holding the physical object in your hand just hours later.”

The Soft Serve lamp is available in two versions – a ceiling and table lamp version. It is also sold in a variety of colorful colors including pastel pinks, blues, and bright yellow.

The Câpsula Tiny Homes Are Small But Mighty Helping You Live Large With Less

Dubbed Câpsula, this tiny homes concept by architecture studio i29 was launched at Dutch Design Week 2023. It is a series of prefabricated cabins and tiny homes that provide simplicity and design-led thinking. Although the project is small-scale, the plans and ambitions for it are pretty huge. The main intention behind the project is to encourage slow living and form the perfect cabin architecture, with few excellent options.

The series of prefabricated cabins and tiny homes basically includes three iterations: Soft Lodge, Writer’s Block Hut, and Tiny Holiday Home. The various versions allow you to pick a home that can fit your particular needs, uses, and wants. The cabins follow the style of minimalist architecture, but this does not entail a cold or boring aesthetic, in fact, the various homes are classy and imbibed with depth and meaning. Timber was utilized as the main material, as well as natural textures and colors.

The tiny homes can accommodate a family of four, and they’re equipped with a living room, kitchen/dining area, a patio, bedrooms, and a bathroom. Although the homes are small with a minimum footprint, they offer top-notch amenities and feel pretty spacious. Each volume has its own special program and has a pretty distinctive size and height. They are accentuated with large windows and sliding doors, to allow a serene indoor-outdoor connection, creating a home that provides stunning vistas and a touch of fresh air. The homes may be small but they are mighty!

The Soft Lodge and Writer’s Block Hut prototypes were built for the Dutch Design Week 2023, and they will be displayed in the garden of DOMUSDELA, where visitors can experience the homes for themselves. In fact, the Writer’s Block Hut will be utilized. podcast broadcast, wherein creatives can discuss their work process, and relationship to space. According to i29, the Câpsula project is all about “living large with less”, and the concept is intended to grow as businesses do. Although these initial designs are by i29, in the future, there will be more opportunities for designers and architects to collaborate with the company, and create interesting builds.

An Old Public Laundry In Barcelona Was Transformed Into A Raw Modern Home With Two Central Courtyards

Spanish architecture studio CRÜ did something truly interesting and innovative by transforming an old public laundry into a house and a studio. The old laundry is located in west Barcelona, and the studio remodeled the space for a couple. The home is dubbed La Clara, and the architecture studio reconfigured the ground floor laundry into a home by integrating a two-story structure to the rear. While also creating a studio space in the front section of the property.

The two new structures have been located around two courtyards, and a serene glazed corridor, which functions as a connecting space that allows the residents to transition between the studio and the rest of the home. The design and idea behind La Clara was to retain the history and nostalgic value of the laundry, by paying a tribute to the “effervescent rawness” of the pre-existing structure.

“All existing walls and stairs are undressed to show only the entrails, to recover the stench of soap and gossip. This aesthetic choice imparts a sense of continuity and rawness, reinforcing the project’s connection to the old laundry,” said the studio.

The two central courtyards were positioned quite thoughtfully, with the larger courtyard segregating the studio from the private house at the back. The smaller courtyard on the other hand allows more light into the bedroom. “The central courtyards, or voids, are a key aspect of the design,” said the studio. “[They offer] an innovative solution to provide natural light and ventilation to each room while visually and spatially separating public and private areas.”

The interior of La Clara features a spacious open-plan living and dining room, as well as three bedrooms. Trowelled concrete was utilized throughout the ground floor to create a homely and inviting space. The concrete was paired up with exposed brick walls, concrete beams, ducting, and white metal trusses. A quaint brick staircase is nestled behind the kitchen cabinetry which is connected to the main bedroom on the upper floor. It is clad in corrugated metal sheeting on the external facades and provides views into both the central courtyards.
