This Biochemical Food Lid changes color to tell you when your refrigerated food is about to go bad

Ever found yourself tossing out perfectly good food just because the expiration date on the package said so? Well, Kimia Amir-Moazami, a UDK Berlin graduate, has an awesome solution for that – the Vorkoster Lid. This cool 3D-printed lid is here to put an end to unnecessary food waste by giving you a heads-up on whether your food is still good, without relying solely on those conventional expiry dates.

Designer: Kimia Amir Moazami

So, the Vorkoster Lid is not your average lid – it’s got a pH-sensitive foil in the middle that can sniff out if your meat or fish is starting to turn bad. When these foods get spoiled, they release ammonia gas, and this clever foil, made from algae and coated in a special dye, changes color from light green to bright purple. It’s like a neon sign for your food – “Eat me now!” or “Better find something else.”

Kimia makes a valid point about the confusion surrounding expiration dates contributing significantly to food wastage. The Vorkoster Lid aims to revolutionize this by tapping into our natural senses, similar to recognizing the browning of a banana peel or the smell of sour milk, guiding us to make informed decisions. It acts as the superhero of your fridge, ensuring nothing unnecessarily goes to waste. Kimia’s dislike for standardized expiry dates is well-founded, acknowledging that factors like cooling interruptions during food transport and production can hamper the shelf life. The Vorkoster Lid, armed with pH functionality, responds directly to a food item’s freshness regardless of its origin or packaging, challenging the dominance of one-size-fits-all expiration dates. It’s a rebellious solution to a common problem.

The Vorkoster Lid is a chameleon, if I may say. It is designed to cover any type of tub or bowl, ensuring flexibility and compatibility with various containers. Its versatility allows consumers to use it across different types of packaging, serving as a reminder to consume that deliciousness before it turns into science experiment leftovers.

Amir-Moazami drew inspiration from the common practice of using a plate to cover food in the fridge, creating a design that fits any bowl or container. The star of the show is the pH-reactive film that takes the guesswork out of checking your food’s freshness. First shown off in 2021, the Vorkoster Lid made its mark at Dutch Design Week. Amir-Moazami anticipates that the Vorkoster Lid could hit shelves within the next two years, following thorough testing to ensure flawless functionality.

With food waste being such a burgeoning problem (and a leading cause of carbon emissions), the Vorkoster Lid is like a breath of fresh air – or should we say, a bite of fresh food. It’s not just a lid; it’s a game-changer. By offering a visual and analog reminder of a food item’s freshness, this 3D-printed wonder might just be the hero we need to kick food waste to the curb and savor every last bite.

OpenAI suspends developer over ChatGPT bot that impersonated a presidential candidate

OpenAI has suspended the developer behind Dean.Bot, a ChatGPT-powered bot designed to impersonate Democratic presidential candidate Dean Phillips to help bolster his campaign, according to The Washington Post. The chatbot was created by AI startup Delphi for the super PAC We Deserve Better, which supports Phillips.

Dean.Bot didn’t all-out pretend to be Phillips himself; before engaging with Dean.Bot, website visitors would be shown a disclaimer describing the nature of the chatbot. Still, this type of use goes directly against OpenAI’s policies. A spokesperson for the company confirmed the developer's suspension in a statement to the Post. It comes just weeks after OpenAI published a lengthy blog post about the measures it’s taking to prevent the misuse of its technology ahead of the 2024 elections, specifically citing “chatbots impersonating candidates” as an example of what’s not allowed.

A disclaimer for the chatbot of Congressman Dean Phillips

OpenAI also said in its blog post that it does not “allow people to build applications for political campaigning and lobbying.” Per an earlier story by The Washington Post, the intent of Dean.Bot was to engage with potential supporters and spread the candidate’s message. Following the Post’s inquiry, Delphi initially removed ChatGPT from the bot and kept it running with other, open-source tools before ultimately taking it town altogether on Friday night once OpenAI stepped in.

If you visit the site now, you’ll still be greeted by the disclaimer — but the chatbot itself is down due to “technical difficulties,” presenting visitors with the message, “Apologies, DeanBot is away campaigning right now!” Engadget has reached out to OpenAI for comment.

The 2023 Amazon Echo Show 8 is back down to its record-low price of $90

Amazon upgraded its Echo Show 8 display late last year to give it a sleeker design and faster Alexa responses, and you can get it right now at the lowest price we've seen it hit. The third-gen, 2023 Echo Show 8 is 40 percent off on Amazon, bringing it down to just $90. It normally costs $150. The display comes in two colors, Charcoal and Glacier White, and the discount applies to both.

The 2023 Echo Show 8 brought upgrades inside and out to the smart home gadget. It has spatial audio with room calibration that should make for much fuller sound than the previous models were able to achieve. The improvements carry over to video calling, which benefits from crisper audio and a 13-megapixel camera.

Amazon debuted its new Adaptive Content feature alongside the 2023 Echo Show 8, which changes what’s shown on the screen based on where you are in the room. If you’re standing far away, it’ll display easily digestible information in large font, like the weather or news headlines. As you get closer, it’ll switch to a more detailed view. It can also show personalized content for anyone enrolled in visual ID, surfacing your favorite playlists and other content.

The Echo Show 8 also boasts 40 percent faster response times for Alexa thanks to its upgraded processor. For privacy-conscious buyers, it has a physical camera shutter that’s controlled with a slider on the top of the device, so you know for sure that it’s not watching. There’s also a button to turn off the mic and camera.

A Latticed Timber Roof & A Lebanese Cedar Tree In The Center Make This Unique Structure Truly Stand Out

Dubbed A Room Around a Tree, this unique residence in South London features an outbuilding designed by the British studio Tikari Works. The studio framed the outbuilding with a latticed timber roof structure and is designed to skillfully weave around a Lebanese cedar tree. The aesthetically pleasing home was created to have a minimal impact on the surrounding natural environment, while also possessing a versatile inner space with a lovely adjoining terrace for the family.

Designer: Tikari Works

“The core concept of the design is to celebrate the mature cedar tree that is the focal point of the garden whilst creating a flexible space for our client’s growing family,” said Tikari Works director Ty Tikari. “The timber beams are extra deep and stained black to create a meditative internal atmosphere and bring the verdant greens of the garden to the foreground.”

The entire plan and intent behind the design was to build a serene dialogue with the landscape, with the edge of the building subtly wrapping around the tree branches. The edge was also partially bounded by transparent structural glazing which gives an ethereal and other-worldly appeal to the building “The curved form of the project allows the building to engage with the language of the garden as the building edge weaves between the natural features on the site. Internally, this creates a sense of compression and expansion that is used to organize the building functions without the need for physical boundaries,” said Tikari.

Quite interestingly, A Room Around A Tree was constructed using light-handed construction techniques that ensure the vegetation in the area is protected. These techniques included a low-impact “floating” ring beam, and a mini-pile foundation system. One of the motives was that a distance of two meters was to be maintained from the trees on the site,  allowing the trees to be protected and undisturbed.

To support and encourage future flexibility, the studio incorporated elements such as integrated custom joinery, an oak kitchenette, a cast-concrete sink, and a mobile storage unit. Off-the-shelf materials such as corrugated cladding, clockwork, and stained timber were utilized to keep the project within budget.

NASA says it’s reestablished contact with the Ingenuity Mars helicopter

After a short period of worrying silence, NASA said on Saturday night that it was able to regain contact with the Ingenuity helicopter. The autonomous aircraft unexpectedly ceased communications with the Perseverance rover, which relays all transmissions between Ingenuity and Earth, on Thursday during its 72nd flight on Mars. It had already been acting up prior to this, having cut its previous flight short for an unknown reason, and NASA intended to do a systems check during the latest ascent.

The space agency said in an update posted on X that it’s now reviewing the data from Ingenuity to understand what happened. Perseverance picked up its signal after the team instructed it to perform “long-duration listening sessions.” Ingenuity has experienced blackouts before, as recently as last year, and was able to return to flight. But it’s too early to say if that will be the case this time. The mini helicopter is already running well past the original timeline of its mission.
