Miele’s G8 Dishwasher Photographs Your Dirty Dishes Before Auto-Selecting The Cycle: Hands-on at IFA 2026

Miele’s new G8 Diamond snaps a photo of your dirty dishes before it washes them. The moment the door swings toward shut, a light inside blinks on, a camera grabs one frame, the light dies, and the AutoVision system studies what it caught. If it sees a bottle, it calls up BottleClean and drives the spray harder. If it sees a pot, the cleaning intensity climbs. If it sees plastics, it runs the new hot air drying harder, because plastic containers are famously terrible at drying themselves. Miele showed it for the first time at IFA 2026 in Berlin, and it lands in Germany, Austria and Switzerland in April 2027.

A camera in a dishwasher makes the headline, but the memory is what makes the design. The G8 holds onto that bottle it clocked at breakfast, so stacking dinner plates on top of it by eight in the evening changes nothing. Layer in AutoDos and its PowerDisk granulate, measuring out its own detergent since 2018, then set an app rule that says wait until 80 percent full and never before 10pm, and the machine stops consulting you altogether. Miele has spent decades selling dishwashers on the promise that they scrub so you do not have to. This one wants to think so you do not have to.

Here’s the part that actually impressed me. AutoVision doesn’t run a video feed you can scrub through in the app. It fires once, right as the door clicks shut, and the machine works from that single image for the entire cycle. Load a wine bottle at breakfast, stack it under a mountain of lunch plates by evening, and the G8 still treats it as a bottle, because it saw it once and that was enough. The only real caveat came from Miele’s own team at IFA: keep bottles roughly central and pots in the lower basket, since the spray arm still struggles to reach the far corners. Vision only helps if the water can follow it there.

What makes this genuinely new isn’t the word AI, which every appliance brand at IFA 2026 was throwing around like confetti. Most of those claims are turbidity sensors, the kind that read how murky the wash water has become and adjust accordingly. LG’s SenseClean works that way, and Samsung has filed similarly around soil detection. A turbidity sensor knows the water is dirty. It has no idea why. Miele’s camera identifies the actual object sitting in the rack, a considerably harder computer vision problem, and one that both LG and Bosch have patented around for years without shipping a consumer dishwasher built on it. Miele is putting an object-recognition camera inside a box you can buy next spring, not just inside a patent filing.

Around that camera sits a decade of quieter automation finally clicking into place. AutoDos, with its PowerDisk granulate, has been dosing detergent on its own since 2018, and Miele still claims nobody else in the category offers true automatic dispensing. ExcellentDry adds a hot air system with three fixed levels, chosen once and then applied forever, aimed squarely at the plastic containers that usually come out of a cycle still damp at the base. The cutlery drawer becomes a genuine third tier, one side droppable for coffee cups, and a new touch display replaces the old dial logic. Set the app to run only past 10pm and only above 80 percent full, or tie it to your solar output, and the dishwasher stops asking permission for anything.

None of this works if you don’t trust the camera’s judgment, and Miele knows it. “Intelligence can be programmed. Trust has to be earned,” said Dr. Axel Kniehl, the company’s Executive Director of Marketing and Sales, at the IFA press conference, and it’s the one line from the whole reveal that actually admits the stakes. AutoVision only functions if enabled by the user, according to Miele’s own release, which suggests it ships switched off by default. Fair enough. Handing a machine the authority to decide how hard to scrub your grandmother’s pans is a bigger ask than letting it dose its own detergent, and Miele seems to know it needs to earn that permission slowly rather than assume it.

The G8 Diamond won’t reach a single kitchen before April 2027, and even then only in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, so everything here is still a promise rather than a lived-in product. But the promise is the interesting part. For a century, appliance makers competed on how much physical labor they could remove. Miele is the first one at this scale betting the next fight is over who you trust to make the fifty tiny decisions labor never touched in the first place.

Finally, a Compass That Works Without Opening Google Maps

Anyone who has wandered around an unfamiliar neighborhood searching for a boutique that Google Maps insists is “on your left” when it is actually tucked behind a parking garage knows the specific frustration I am talking about. Small, independent stores rarely have the budget for a flashy storefront, and a pin on a map that is close enough to be tantalizing and far enough to be maddening is usually all you get. A Pow Studio designed something to fix exactly that: a small NFC-embedded fixture called the Navigation Tool that turns a single phone tap into a live compass, guiding you down the block to a physical destination without asking you to download anything.

That solves the first problem. The second one is subtler but just as real. Even after you find the store and walk through the door, most brands have no clean way to hand you off to their digital world. You try something on, feel vaguely inspired, and leave with no easy path to the website, the product specs, or the broader catalog. The Navigation Tool closes that gap too. The same NFC chip, this time embedded into the store’s hanging display system, redirects your phone tap to an online page loaded with product details and brand information. Two taps, two problems solved, zero apps required.

The mechanics are genuinely elegant. Outside, you tap your phone on the tool and a search bar appears asking for the coordinates of your destination. The system pulls from Location-Based Services and your phone’s built-in gyroscope to calculate real-time distance and direction, then renders everything as a clean, minimal compass interface on your screen. MagSafe compatibility is built in so the phone can physically attach to the tool while you navigate, which is a small detail but the kind that signals someone actually thought about what your hands are doing when you are half-lost and moving.

No app to download, no QR code cluttering a window decal, no clunky onboarding screen asking you to create an account you will use exactly once. You tap, and it works, the same quiet mechanism already living in Apple Pay or a subway fare card, just pointed at a completely different problem. American shoppers are already fluent in tap-to-pay and tap-to-unlock behavior, so repurposing that same gesture for navigation feels less like a gimmick and more like an overdue extension of something we already trust.

It also lands at an interesting moment for retail. Brick-and-mortar shopping has been quietly reasserting itself as something people actually want, not just tolerate, but brands still need their physical spaces to feed the digital ecosystem that keeps the business running. A tool like this treats the store not as a dead end or a photo backdrop but as one stop in a longer, connected journey. That feels like a more honest way to think about retail design than another Instagram wall ever could.

The visual language matches the intention. The compass interface on screen is stripped back to the point of being almost architectural: a circle, a crosshair, a tilt reading, a direction bearing. Nothing decorative, nothing unnecessary. It looks like something a navigator or a cinematographer would recognize before a tech blogger would, which feels right. Precise without being cold, minimal without being precious.

I do wonder about scale. A single boutique installing this is a lovely, considered gesture. A mall trying to retrofit hundreds of storefronts with individual NFC compass units is a different logistical conversation entirely, and I am not convinced every brand needs this level of ceremony just to get someone through the door. But as a proof of concept, it is a genuinely smart answer to a problem most retailers pretend does not exist. Sometimes the best design solution is not a flashier app. It is a small, physical object that refuses to overcomplicate the walk from curiosity to the front door.

This $500 Wearable Tracks Your Brain All Day, Even While You’re Moving

Our brain is still a mystery, of which only a small part has been completely understood. Every single decision we make, every move in stressful situations, and the ability to plan way ahead of time can be attributed to the grey matter between the ears. While most wearables want to bring the prowess of advanced medical-grade brain monitoring to everyday life, the strings attached nullify the comprehensive level of scanning required for deeper insight.

Atlas Mankind, a startup, wants to change that with a $500 wearable that sticks to the back of your ears to function in the background as we go on with our daily lives. That’s a leap from other similar wearable gadgets, which require the wearer to stay still or only function while you are asleep. Dubbed Atlas 1.0, the advanced EEG gadget monitors electrodermal activity, voice patterns, and head movements throughout the day to make precise readings of what your brain is doing.

According to Atlas Mankind, the compact EEG tracker doesn’t restrict the wearer’s movement or only function in certain situations, thereby making it a more natural and unbiased instrument for understanding the internal state of the wearer. It creates a longitudinal record of the brain’s activity in real-life situations, “which is much more meaningful than a single test or isolated brain scan.” The wearable functions in conjunction with the compatible app to track three metrics, which are Presence, Stress, and Energy Burn. That is much more comprehensive than having the half-baked metrics of your stress levels, heart rate, skin temperature, sleep analysis, and generic brain activity that other advanced wearables tout.

Coming back to the three main metrics on which Atlas 1.0 excels – Presence represents whether your attention is inwards or outwards. For instance, during a conversation with your friend, how engaged you actually were. This is done by analyzing the speech patterns and the hemisphere of the brain that was activated during that time. Then there is the Stress tracking, which keeps a very close tab on your physiological stress in the background. The last one is Energy Burn that identifies the activities that were most taxing during the course of the day.

In conjunction with the app that connects to your calendars, event logs, and schedules, the wearable determines the level of shift in these metrics for an in-depth analysis of the brain state over a period of time. The patterns revealed can help the user identify which habits and activities are worth taking up and which ones are better avoided if possible. Atlas 1.0 sticks to the skin behind the ears on an adhesive pad and records the brain waves, as well as voice patterns (not the actual speech for data safety) and movement 24×7. With a dataset of more than 50,000 brain recordings to power the advanced algorithm, the prospects here are exciting.

According to Ana Montero, co-founder & chief executive officer, “For the first time, some of the most important moments in a human life are becoming measurable.” This is supported by André Marques-Smith, PhD: co-founder & chief technology officer, who says, “commitment to accuracy makes ATLAS a tool for genuine mastery and personal science, not just measurement and vanity metrics.” He adds that the engineering challenge of capturing “research-grade data while in motion” is what makes Atlas 1.0 special.

The company is already taking pre-orders for the non-invasive wearable, and it does come with a $30 monthly subscription to keep going. It’ll be interesting to see how accurate the wearable turns out to be, since it is not cheap and you’ll have to keep paying a monthly subscription to make it relevant.

A Ceramic Lamp That Refuses to Stay the Same

Most lamps ask you to commit. You pick a shade, a finish, a mood, and that’s what you’re stuck with until the bulb burns out or you get sick of it and drag the whole thing to a donation bin. For anyone who likes to rearrange a room the way some people rearrange their playlists, that’s a real limitation, and it’s one nobody really talks about because we’ve just accepted lighting as a fixed decision rather than a flexible one.

Seoul-based designer Byunggwon Na looked at that problem and did something refreshingly simple about it. His new piece, ALIT, is a lamp built from two honest materials, slip-cast ceramic and solid wood, and it’s designed so the ceramic shade can be lifted off and swapped for another one entirely. The wooden column stays put. The ceramic changes. One base, endless personalities.

I’ll admit I’m a sucker for objects that do more with less, and ALIT is a good example of that instinct done right. It isn’t trying to be smart, connected, or app-controlled, which honestly feels like the correct move in a market saturated with lighting products chasing the “smart home” label. Instead, Na leaned into contrast: the coolness of ceramic against the warmth of wood, the matte against the grain, the handmade against the geometric. The square wooden column reads almost architectural, a quiet, upright form that could disappear into a Scandinavian-leaning living room or a mid-century one just as easily. The ceramic shade sitting on top is where the personality lives, and because it’s removable, that personality isn’t permanent.

This piece treats color and light together, not separately. A pale, unglazed ceramic shade lets light spill out soft and even, almost like paper. A darker or glazed version holds the light closer, letting it glow through in patches instead of flooding the room. So the same base lamp can go from a reading-corner glow to something moodier for a dinner table, just by switching the top. That’s not a gimmick. That’s actual utility dressed up as good design, and those two things don’t always travel together.

American interiors have leaned hard into modularity over the past few years, from sectional sofas you can rearrange endlessly to shelving systems that grow with you. Lighting has lagged behind that trend, still mostly sold as one fixed object per mood. ALIT fits into where the category is quietly heading: fewer disposable purchases, more pieces designed to be lived with and adjusted rather than replaced. For a design market that talks a lot about sustainability but rarely builds it into something this tactile, that matters.

There’s also something to be said for the fact that Na didn’t overcomplicate the engineering. No magnets, no proprietary mounts, no fragile clip system to break after six months. The shade simply rests on the column, held by gravity and good proportions. It’s the kind of restraint that separates designers who understand materials from those who just decorate around them.

I don’t think ALIT is going to reinvent the lighting industry, and I don’t think it’s trying to. What it does is solve a small, specific annoyance, the fact that changing a lamp’s mood usually means buying a whole new lamp, and it solves it with a design vocabulary that feels considered rather than trend-chasing. In a category full of objects competing for attention, ALIT seems more interested in earning a long-term place in a room. That’s a rarer ambition than it should be, whether this one ends up in a Seoul studio or an apartment in Brooklyn.
