Nintendo and The Pokémon Company are suing Palworld creator Pocketpair

Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Pocketpair in Tokyo. Pocketpair is the Japanese video game developer behind Palworld, a game people have been describing as a Pokémon parody, featuring cute gun-toting monsters. The game, released in Early Access form on January 18, was an instant hit, selling 15 million copies on Steam and crossing 25 million players within just a month

The Pokémon Company said a few days after Palworld came out that it was going to investigate a game "released in January 2024" and will "take appropriate measures to address any acts that infringe on intellectual property rights related to Pokémon." Looks like the investigation is over, and it has decided to take legal action.

"This lawsuit seeks an injunction against infringement and compensation for damages on the grounds that Palworld, a game developed and released by the Defendant, infringes multiple patent rights," Nintendo said in its announcement of the lawsuit.

Pocketpair previously said that its game is more like Ark Survival Evolved and Valheim than Pokémon. Company CEO Takuro Mizobe claimed that Palworld "cleared legal reviews" and that no lawsuits were filed against Pocketpair regarding its development. While Palworld's monsters would look familiar to Pokémon fans, it takes on a darker tone. You can choose to play as a friend to the monsters known as "Pals" and fight off the poachers trying to kill them. But you can also kill and eat Pals, make them fight to the death and even sell them into slavery.

Shortly after Nintendo announced its lawsuit, Pocketpair responded. "At this moment, we are unaware of the specific patents we are accused of infringing upon, and we have not been notified of such details," the company wrote. "It is truly unfortunate that we will be forced to allocate significant time to matters unrelated to game development due to this lawsuit. However, we will do our utmost for our fans, and to ensure that indie game developers are not hindered or discouraged from pursuing their creative ideas."

Update, September 19 2024, 9:40AM ET: This story has been updated with Pocketpair's response to Nintendo's lawsuit.

Awekeys Full Metal Keycaps Set Turns Any Mechanical Keyboard Into a Design Object

If you’re the type of person who uses computers all day, then you’re likely to appreciate how the quality of a keyboard can make or break the experience. It isn’t just about key travel, switches, or responsiveness, though those are definitely critical elements of a good keyboard. The design of the keycaps themselves can affect the joy of typing, whether it’s through the texture your fingers feel or the aesthetics that delight your eyes. Off-the-shelf keyboards, including mechanical ones, tend to come with uninspiring keycaps that only jump to life when the RGB lighting kicks in. Thankfully, there are keyboards that let you switch out keycaps, and this full set of metal keycaps brings tactile and visual joy that raises your keyboard experience, whether you’re an avid gamer, a professional writer, or simply someone who loves a good-looking mechanical keyboard.

Designer: Awekeys

The majority of keyboard keycaps are made of plastic for cost-effectiveness, including those on mechanical keyboards despite their metallic keypress sounds. Metal, after all, is harder to work with than plastic, a bit more expensive to produce, but also undeniably more premium in their appearance. A full set of metal keycaps has always been a keyboard enthusiast’s dream, and Awekeys is only too eager to finally make that dream come true in a very satisfying and sustainable way. Teaming up with world-renowned custom premium keyboard vendors, Awekeys is offering a luxurious way to turn your favorite mechanical keyboard into a work of art.

Each key in this set is made from recycled metal, giving discarded materials new life and minimizing the harmful impact of manufacturing processes on the environment. Products made from recycled materials may have some negative connotations when it comes to quality and durability, but Awekeys’ advanced full CNC machining system ensures that these metal keycaps can resist wear and tear and stand the test of time. This meticulous crafting process enables the creation of intricate designs and outstanding textures, demonstrating the attention lavished on keycaps that will always be under your fingers and within your sight.

The result is a set of metal keys that look exquisite and feel just as luxurious, delivering a typing experience unlike any other. There are various customization options available as well, from matte or glossy finishes to a variety of colors that match your style. Of course, if you’re getting metal keycaps, you might as well embrace a metallic aesthetic, and the Gold, Silver, Copper, and Titanium colorways showcase this property the best. The keycaps are given an extra splash of nano coating to prevent the development of a patina that, while aesthetic on other products, could look unappealing on a keyboard. Whether using a homogenous set or a combination of different colors, your keyboard transforms into a boast-worthy design object that adds value to your desk, even when not in use. To further drive home that image, Awekeys has even collaborated with independent designers to create accent keycaps featuring unique artworks.

The Awekeys metal keycaps set isn’t just about the looks either, as it also enhances the typing experience thanks to its very nature. The metal keycaps add some weight that increases stability and responsiveness, giving not just gamers but also writers and programmers an edge. Compatible with MX-style switches and stabilizers with adjustable stems, these metal keycaps are easy to pull out and plug in, making even the installation process enjoyable. Offered on a first-come, first-served basis, this premium keycap set adds a different kind of excitement to owning an exclusive designer item that truly sets your keyboard apart from the rest. Stylish and sustainable, these metal keycaps can change the way you look at and use your humble keyboard. So give your mechanical keyboard an upgrade with the Awekeys Full Metal Keycaps Set and enjoy a whole new level of typing.

This Tiny Home With Extra Width Offers A Roomy & Apartment-Like Living Space

Designed by the online marketplace Tiny House Listings, the Mondo is the latest model created in-house. It is equipped with a cozy, spacious, and open interior accentuated by a downstairs bedroom and loads of storage space. The tiny home is an excellent fit for a couple on a mission to downsize but still live comfortably. It is based on a quad-axle trailer and features a length of 32 ft (9.75 m), which is the average size for typical North American tiny homes. It also features an increased width of 10 ft (3 m) instead of the typical 8.5 ft (2.6 m). This ensures that the interior is apartment-like and more spacious as compared to conventional tiny homes. A few extra inches can truly add a whole new level of comfort to a tiny home, however, this will require the home to have a permit to travel on a public road.

Designer: Tiny House Listings

The home occupies around 320 sq ft (30 sq m), and you can enter it through a glass door. The glass door leads you into the living room, which contains a sofa, a pair of small tables, an entertainment center, and generous glazing. The kitchen is closely located, and it includes a microwave, propane-powered stove, sink, fridge/freezer, and ample amount of cabinetry. There is also space to accommodate more appliances. The bathroom is adjacent to the kitchen, and it is equipped with a flushing toilet, vanity sink, and shower.

The bedroom is located on the ground floor, and it can be entered through the kitchen. The bedroom seems quite roomy and spacious, and it incorporates a double bed as well as some storage space. It also includes a stacked washing machine and a dryer. Since the bedroom is located on the ground floor, there is plenty of headroom to stand upright.

A loft area has been placed above the living room, and this space can be used as an additional bedroom or a storage space, depending on the local regulations – since most areas need tiny house loft bedrooms to be equipped with egress windows. This space can be accessed via a removable ladder.

Get a good gawp at Ghostface’s fatality and some new animalities for MK1

A new update for Mortal Kombat I (MK1) is less than a week away from release that will add new character skins, new finishing moves and (eventually) new fighters to its “kombatant” selection screen. NetherRealm Studios released a preview of the “karnage” that’s “koming” around the “korner” (OK, we’ll stop with the unnecessary K’s).

The new trailer released on Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon’s X page shows some of the new stuff MK1 players can expect from the Khaos Reigns pack scheduled for release on September 24 and future updates. The base game costs $49.99 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on Steam and $39.99 on the Nintendo Switch. The Khaos Reigns DLC costs (gasp!) $49.99 for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on Steam and $39.99 for the Nintendo Switch The Khaos Reigns Kollection bundle that includes the Khaos pack and base game will set you back $89.99 for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S or $69.99 for the Nintendo Switch.

The MK1 add-on adds a brand new story mode to the game in which the newly apotheosized Liu Kang battles the evil Titan Havik with his band of fighters and EarthRealm defenders. The new pack also comes with the “Kombat Pack 2” of new fighters available on the release day including the cyborgs Cyrax and Sektor and the shadow assassin Noob Saibot.

The pack will also provide access to Ghostface from the Scream movies, the T-1000 voiced by Robert Patrick and Conan the Barbarian once they are released. If you can’t wait for a release date or you just don’t like watching whole trailers for one moment, footage of one of Ghostface’s fatalities found its way to X. The video shows the infamous Scream villain eviscerating an opponent with the help of another Ghostface killer, a loving nod to Scream VI starring Jenna Ortega and Hayden Panettiere.

MK1 is also bringing back an old favorite finisher known as “animalities” that first appeared in the Mortal Kombat 3 arcade game. Every fighter in the game has a finishing move where they turn into an animal and vivisect their opponent in a number of creative ways. Boon shared a clip of Kitana’s animality in which she transforms into a giant, bloodthirsty hummingbird and turns her opponent into a bloody flesh flower.

X is temporarily back online for some people in Brazil

X is back online for many people in Brazil, more than two weeks after the service was blocked in the country. The change, though, isn’t because Brazil’s government has reversed its stance on the Elon Musk-owned platform. Instead, it seems that X has begun using Cloudflare’s DNS service, which is for now helping the social network avoid the Brazilian government’s restrictions, though it’s unclear how long that will be the case.

In a statement, a spokesperson for X described it as "an inadvertent and temporary service restoration" in the country and that is expects to become inaccessible again "soon." X has been blocked in Brazil since the end of August, when the Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes ordered internet service providers in the country to block X following months of publicly feuding with Musk over X’s refusal to block certain accounts. The spat also affected SpaceX-owned Starlink, which had its Brazilian bank accounts frozen amid the dispute.

"When X was shut down in Brazil, our infrastructure to provide service to Latin America was no longer accessible to our team," a spokesperson X said in a statement. "To continue providing optimal service to our users, we changed network providers. This change resulted in an inadvertent and temporary service restoration to Brazilian users. While we expect the platform to be inaccessible again in Brazil soon, we continue efforts to work with the Brazilian government to return very soon for the people of Brazil.”

The New York Times reported that X started to come back online for many people in Brazil Wednesday, though the service was still somewhat inconsistent. The Times reported that it was the company’s move to Cloudflare that at least temporarily enabled it to come back. As it stands, Brazilian ISPs are likely figuring out how to continue to complying with the court order. Should they fail, Brazilian authorities are likely to look for new ways to enforce the block. Regulators in the country have imposed steep fines for users who attempt to get around the country’s ban by using VPNs.

Update September 18, 2024, 9:05 PM ET: This story has been updated with additional information from an X spokesperson.

Renault revives the Estafette as electric cargo van tailored for urban scenarios

Renault introduced the Estafette commercial drive van in 1959, and after two decades of success finally replaced it with the Trafic in 1980. The front-wheel drive van with the engine at the front was very practical and economical for its time. The interior was ultra spacious for all the cargo hauling needs.

Now the French automotive manufacturer has introduced an all-electric concept to cater to the needs of modern urban commuters. Dubbed the Estafette Concept, the last-mile vehicle sees a revival after almost 65 years from its initial launch. According to Renault, the concept is destined for the production lines in two years which makes it an even more compelling announcement.

Designer: Renault

Presuming the final production version will be mostly similar to this one, the improvements seem interesting. The roof height has been increased from 1.85m to 2.59m and the length from 4.6m to 4.87m to make even more space for hauling cargo. The width however remains more or less the same at 1.92m. Another major change is the transition from the sliding doors on the side to a roller shutter that opens to the full height and comes with a foldout step.

The cockpit has a zesty yellow theme which is contrasted with the backs of the floor and other side panels. A single swivel seat gives the driver complete freedom to glance over at the seven-inch telemetry display, 12-inch infotainment system and the 10-inch digitalized wing mirrors. A series of small screens display the customizable widgets to stay connected. As Philippe Divry, the CEO of Flexis said, “Estafette Concept is the first example of what electric utility vehicles will look like tomorrow: purpose-engineered to drive in cities, compact, connected and built for fully sustainable delivery services.”

There’s a lot of headroom for even the tallest of loaders and the bright cockpit interiors will expose any cleaning lapses. The Estafette EV is created under the brand name Flexis Group – a joint venture between Renault, Volvo and CMA CGM Group. Hence, the vehicle will ride on the new FlexEVan platform when it ultimately meets fruition. The platform is future-proof since it comes with Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) architecture for real-time updates and predictive maintenance. This according to the automaker reduces the operating costs by 30 percent.

Visual DNA of its ancestral predecessor is present in the form of circular headlamps, the descending bonnet line and the large grille sandwiched between the retrofuturistic fog lamps. As a modern improvement, the taillights have arrow-like indicators and the contoured windscreen has wafer-thin pillars for improved visibility. The cargo area has foldaway shelves to arrange the goods for sorted loading and unloading. Also, there’s an automatic sliding door to separate the cargo area from the cockpit.

Nothing Phone (3) concept brings a 3-Camera Setup and a refined Glyph Interface to the smartphone

Thrice as good deserves thrice the number of cameras, right?

The past few weeks have been tech-heavy. First the Google Pixel launch, then IFA (where we saw multiple new phones), and then Apple announcing the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro. It’s called Tech-tember for a reason, and it seems like we’re just getting started because Huawei announced their tri-fold device just days ago, and now this Nothing Phone (3) concept is grabbing eyeballs.

It’s been a while since the company’s announced a new flagship. Nothing debuted the budget Phone (2a) this year, and followed it up with the ultra-budget CMF Phone (1) later in July. While we wait for the Phone (3) to officially drop, this concept from the mind of AndroidLeo shows off an incredibly refined form that still stays true to Nothing’s original design playbook.

Designer: AndroidLeo

Purely a visual exercise on behalf of AndroidLeo, this concept shows a further refinement of Nothing’s style. Not much changed between Phone (1) and (2) barring the splitting of the Glyph interface. AndroidLeo takes the Glyph interface in this concept further by modifying its shape without diluting the character. The G-shaped arc in the Glyph gets turned into an O shape, around the wireless charging coils as well as inside them. The glyph light on the top right corner remains untouched, but the camera gets a redesigned LED array. The Phone (3) features a 3-lens setup, and the Glyphs respond to that, with an almost clover-meets-fidget-spinner type layout. A flash sits in the top right part of this glyph, while the battery and charging lights at the bottom stay intact, along with the red recording light.

Details on the Phone (3) have been scarce, although one could expect a launch probably around MWC next year if we’re looking at patterns. As of now, Nothing’s debuting a documentary on Brian Eno at the London Design Festival, and just announced a product launch on the 24th of September.

As for AndroidLeo’s concept, it’s a wonderful look at the evolution of the company’s design. Nothing’s trajectory as a company has been different from most others. They’ve been ruthlessly consumer-focused, with community events, and even encouraging of fan-made designs (whether official as a part of design contests, or unofficial concepts that Nothing proudly showcases on their YouTube).

It’s safe to say that when the Phone (3) launches, a triple-lens camera might just be the most no-brainer upgrade… especially given that Nothing has not one, but two budget phone lines – their (a) series as well as the CMF series. It just makes sense for their flagship to now become the de-facto ‘Pro’ of their mobile offering. Snapdragon hopes to announce Gen 4 of their Snapdragon 8 chipset in October, and Nothing will undoubtedly capitalize on it by being one of the first new phones to feature the processor.

The Phone (3) could also be one of Nothing’s first AI-focus phones, as the Phone (2) and (2a) both had GenAI-based wallpaper options. Aside from Gemini making its eventual appearance on all Android phones, maybe Nothing’s working on AI features for their device as well as their camera system. For now, let’s see what they have to announce on the 24th of the month.
