The Adorable Soft Serve Lamp Was Designed To Look Like A Swirly Ice Cream

Gone are the days when lighting designs were boring and typically designed objects that did nothing but add light to a living space. A well-designed lighting fixture should not only have the ability to illuminate any living space but also add that extra oomph factor! I mean, of course, we need them to see in the dark, but as highly functional as they should be, a lighting design also needs to be aesthetically pleasing, adding an attractive and visually soothing element to your home or office space. And, one such unique lighting design I came across is the Soft Serve Lamp – which quite literally looks what it sounds like!

Designer: Crème Atelier

Designed by Stockholm design studio Crème Atelier, the Soft Serve lamp was created to mimic a “swirly ice cream”, and is available in a range of adorable sorbet colors. The Soft Serve lamp is 3D-printed and is inspired by pastries and desserts, which in my opinion makes a great source of inspiration for lighting designs.

“We find that baked goods and desserts have very captivating shapes and forms,” said Crème Atelier co-founder Jacqueline Kessidis. “We were very intrigued by the creamy organic shapes of meringue and soft serve ice cream,” she added. “Soft serve lamp is inspired by the swirly ice creams and we like to compare the 3D printer with an ice cream machine.”

As mentioned before, the Soft Serve lamp is 3D-printed using a bioplastic that is made from recycled food packaging. 3D printing is utilized to create the unique swirling shape of the lamp. All the lamps are made to order, which makes the entire production method pretty swift and sustainable according to the agency. “Our starting point was to find a sustainable material and that’s how we found our way to 3D printing as a production method,” said Kessidis. “The biggest advantage is definitely the fact that you can go from an idea to holding the physical object in your hand just hours later.”

The Soft Serve lamp is available in two versions – a ceiling and table lamp version. It is also sold in a variety of colorful colors including pastel pinks, blues, and bright yellow.

The Câpsula Tiny Homes Are Small But Mighty Helping You Live Large With Less

Dubbed Câpsula, this tiny homes concept by architecture studio i29 was launched at Dutch Design Week 2023. It is a series of prefabricated cabins and tiny homes that provide simplicity and design-led thinking. Although the project is small-scale, the plans and ambitions for it are pretty huge. The main intention behind the project is to encourage slow living and form the perfect cabin architecture, with few excellent options.

The series of prefabricated cabins and tiny homes basically includes three iterations: Soft Lodge, Writer’s Block Hut, and Tiny Holiday Home. The various versions allow you to pick a home that can fit your particular needs, uses, and wants. The cabins follow the style of minimalist architecture, but this does not entail a cold or boring aesthetic, in fact, the various homes are classy and imbibed with depth and meaning. Timber was utilized as the main material, as well as natural textures and colors.

The tiny homes can accommodate a family of four, and they’re equipped with a living room, kitchen/dining area, a patio, bedrooms, and a bathroom. Although the homes are small with a minimum footprint, they offer top-notch amenities and feel pretty spacious. Each volume has its own special program and has a pretty distinctive size and height. They are accentuated with large windows and sliding doors, to allow a serene indoor-outdoor connection, creating a home that provides stunning vistas and a touch of fresh air. The homes may be small but they are mighty!

The Soft Lodge and Writer’s Block Hut prototypes were built for the Dutch Design Week 2023, and they will be displayed in the garden of DOMUSDELA, where visitors can experience the homes for themselves. In fact, the Writer’s Block Hut will be utilized. podcast broadcast, wherein creatives can discuss their work process, and relationship to space. According to i29, the Câpsula project is all about “living large with less”, and the concept is intended to grow as businesses do. Although these initial designs are by i29, in the future, there will be more opportunities for designers and architects to collaborate with the company, and create interesting builds.

An Old Public Laundry In Barcelona Was Transformed Into A Raw Modern Home With Two Central Courtyards

Spanish architecture studio CRÜ did something truly interesting and innovative by transforming an old public laundry into a house and a studio. The old laundry is located in west Barcelona, and the studio remodeled the space for a couple. The home is dubbed La Clara, and the architecture studio reconfigured the ground floor laundry into a home by integrating a two-story structure to the rear. While also creating a studio space in the front section of the property.

The two new structures have been located around two courtyards, and a serene glazed corridor, which functions as a connecting space that allows the residents to transition between the studio and the rest of the home. The design and idea behind La Clara was to retain the history and nostalgic value of the laundry, by paying a tribute to the “effervescent rawness” of the pre-existing structure.

“All existing walls and stairs are undressed to show only the entrails, to recover the stench of soap and gossip. This aesthetic choice imparts a sense of continuity and rawness, reinforcing the project’s connection to the old laundry,” said the studio.

The two central courtyards were positioned quite thoughtfully, with the larger courtyard segregating the studio from the private house at the back. The smaller courtyard on the other hand allows more light into the bedroom. “The central courtyards, or voids, are a key aspect of the design,” said the studio. “[They offer] an innovative solution to provide natural light and ventilation to each room while visually and spatially separating public and private areas.”

The interior of La Clara features a spacious open-plan living and dining room, as well as three bedrooms. Trowelled concrete was utilized throughout the ground floor to create a homely and inviting space. The concrete was paired up with exposed brick walls, concrete beams, ducting, and white metal trusses. A quaint brick staircase is nestled behind the kitchen cabinetry which is connected to the main bedroom on the upper floor. It is clad in corrugated metal sheeting on the external facades and provides views into both the central courtyards.

6. Taco Device

This concept started out with the metaphor or pun “Let’s taco ’bout it” and it evolved into something that actually uses the idea of the taco, or at least the shape of it.

Why is it noteworthy?

The translation device is shaped like a taco and will be used by both the speaker and the listener. It’s actually like one of those two-way cup devices that you may have used when you were young (or at least those of a certain age) but now using digital technology.

What we like

  • Makes communicating more fun and functional

What we dislike

  • The shape, while good for holding, is not designed to catch sound correctly

7. DOTS

DOTS is a portable coffee machine that works specifically for automated vehicles but can be utilized in other on-the-go scenarios as well. The portable coffee machine is an excellent option for those long car journeys!

Why is it noteworthy?

It has a removable bottom so it can adapt to whatever or wherever you’re using it for. It also uses coffee capsules instead of the usual brewing method to make it easier to use.

What we like

  • A control or lever lets you adjust the intensity of the extraction method from the capsule

What we dislike

  • It has a lid to place a straw on it, but sipping hot coffee with a straw seems weird and uncomfortable

  • The luggage does not include any means of personalizing them, which could be a missed Kodak moment as there is no way to include our photographs on the luggage

The chair is made using monochrome recyclable fiberglass polypropylene resins with UV additives. The Net Lounge features a deep round seat, with an interesting wave-like form that encloses your body and forms a comfortable envelope while you read, nap, or watch a pretty sunset.

The Net Lounge chair is a part of the Net Collection, and it is equipped with a low seat position and an ergonomically designed backrest that supports good posture. The chair has a stackable structure that is light and breathable. It features a radial pattern of square perforations that have been placed over the armchair. It also holds towel clips that allow you to keep your towel in place, and safe from windy days, while non-slip feet ensure the chair is grounded in position.

1. LEGO Popcorn Machine

This Popcorn Machine by Dimexart is created from LEGO! It resembles the iconic popcorn machine you typically find in movie theaters. The machine features a glorious retro style and is built using 955 pieces. The popcorn is also built using LEGO bricks, and the kernel pops out of the machine’s built-in kettle, slides down the ramp, and falls into the popcorn bucket.

2. LEGO “The Moon: Earth’s Companion”

This unique and fan-made creation is built using 2360 bricks and it is a celebration of the beauty and glory of the moon. Called, the LEGO Art space poster “The Moon: Earth’s Companion”, this brick-built Moon features realistic craters and terrains and is made with an impressive amount of attention to detail.

Dubbed the Mechanical Flip Calendar, this LEGO build by ‘Sariels Bricks and Pets’ is designed to explore the beauty of bricks while recreating complex mechanical linkages and interactions. The LEGO build features three flip-down elements that represent the month and date, while the calendar allows you to manually change the display every day by rotating the dials on the side.

4. The LEGO Magic Maze

The LEGO Magic Maze is an immersive game that provides hours of fun. The game is quite simple, yet super fascinating, it basically involves guiding a marble through a challenging playing field by skillfully tilting the set, while navigating past treacherous holes and obstacles.

5. The LEGO Antique Chandelier

The LEGO Antique Chandelier looks like something from an old Victorian mansion. It pays tribute to the traditional chandelier with its near-realistic appearance. It measures 16 inches long and weighs 17.8 ounces or half a kilogram. Sadly, it doesn’t light up, but LEGO builder DallasBricks’ had to sacrifice that to ensure the build looks exactly like a chandelier.

6. LEGO Insect Collection

LEGO launched its newest Insect Collection which was originally conceived by LEGO fan José Maria from Spain. Maria submitted the design to LEGO Ideas, where it received over 10,000 votes, and was later converted into a real collection. To celebrate the launch, LEGO also unveiled a little surprise – an ASMR “Green Noise” playlist to accompany the collection.

7. LEGO Quidditch Trunk

This LEGO Quidditch Trunk isn’t LEGO’s most complex Harry Potter build, but it is definitely quite entertaining. It is a 599-brick build and is accompanied by a comprehensive Quidditch setup which includes players, brooms, hoops, and a launcher that allows you to shoot disc-shaped quaffles through the hoops.

8. LEGO Piranha Plant

LEGO has transformed the Piranha Plant from the Super Mario Landscape into an adorable little desk accessory for all the Mario fans out there. The plant is built using 540 bricks, and it stands tall at 9 inches. It features a moveable jaw, adjustable head, positionable leaves, and two golden coins that can be dropped into the plant’s pipe!

9. LEGO Tower Chess

Ferbrick1’s Tower Chess LEGO build disguises a board game as home decor! The chessboard is cleverly designed and it is morphed into a castle tower. It stores the chess pieces in built-in racks, and the board wraps around to form the tower’s brick facade! Nobody would guess that an entire chess set is hidden underneath!

10. LEGO FedEx Truck

FedEx’s 50th anniversary is soon approaching, and it boasts an inspiring workforce of over 500,000 employees, a fleet of 700+ aircraft, and 200,000 vehicles. And to commemorate the massive company, architect and full-time LEGO fan David Clavijo has built FedEx’s iconic truck using LEGO bricks!

This Serene Pavilion-Style House Near A Lake Makes For The Perfect Fishing Escape On The Weekends

When the weekend comes around, most of us want to head out for a weekend getaway, escaping from our hectic city lives, and immersing ourselves in nature. And graphic designer Bart Crosby is no different! He wanted a tranquil and relaxing fishing escape outside of the city on a lake in Northern Wisconsin, and Wheeler Kearns Architects provided him with just that. Dubbed the Clearwater Lake Retreat, this serene modernist home is located in a flat clearing, whilst being surrounded by 2.5 acres of lush woods.

The Clearwater Lake Retreat is a pavilion-style house that has been oriented on the site to provide stunning views from both sides. The sides have been built with black-framed windows, which offer access to the surrounding vistas. The entire structure is marked by floor-to-ceiling glass walls, that are flanked by two heavy stone walls, which provide support to the rectangular home. It features a lovely butterfly-shaped roof that almost seems to float above it. The roof extends to shelter the porches, creating covered areas on either side, which serve as excellent chilling spots, while also functioning as a contemporary element of the home.

The interior of the home features an open-plan living space that is great for cooking, relaxation, and entertainment. The home features two private bedrooms and a central volume that accommodates all the important functional spaces as such two bathrooms, a mechanical room, and storage space. The Clearwater Lake Retreat is quite connected to nature, but it is also sustainable. The home is heated via hydronic floor heat, while radiant tubing is carried out within the three-foot thick stone walls. During summer, the surrounding trees provide natural ventilation and shade to the home, keeping the residents cool and cozy.

The home showcases a material palette of neutral colors and earthy textures, which perfectly complements the natural surroundings. On the other hand, the exterior is marked with sleek black metal-framed windows that complement the gray stone walls. The stone walls are also seen within the home, which beautifully match with the concrete floors, creating a cabin that is homely, cozy, and soothing.

Ergonomically Designed Dining Chair Is All Set To Transform Your Dinner Table Seating Experience

We often underestimate the importance of a great chair. When in reality, we really shouldn’t. We spend the majority of our day sitting on chairs, whether we’re working in our home office, enjoying a meal, or simply sitting and reading a book for leisure! Hence, this piece of furniture needs to be not only comfortable but ergonomic and aesthetic as well. An excellent chair design is not only a boon to your back and helps you maintain a healthy posture, but is also super comfy to sink into and will perfectly match the interiors of your modern home. And, this is also applicable to dining chairs, which are often ignored when it comes to ergonomics. A well-designed and ergonomic dining chair to consider would be – the Noho Move dining chair.

Designer: Formway for Noho

Design studio Formway teamed up with the brand Noho to create the ergonomically sound dining chair called the Noho Move. Both the New Zealand-based brands collaborated to create a chair that can support and facilitate hours of sitting. “Our brief was to bring ergonomic performance to the dining room — that isn’t really something anyone has done before,” said Formway design lead Paul Stevenson.

The studio Formway has previously designed office chairs for Knoll, hence they were well-versed in designing ergonomic chairs. They also researched how humans can sit for hours at the dining table, to finally create the Noho Move which is an excellent seating option not only for eating but also for work and leisure. The chair is designed to support a wide range of movements such as stretching, fidgeting, and shifting. When you sit on the chair, and comfortably lean back, the back of the Noho Move flexes with you, and when you incline or move ahead to speak to someone, it tilts forward with you.

The chair is built using a recycled nylon shell which is quite flexible, so it moves with the body. The open weave structure of the chair regulates body temperature, creating a comfortable seating experience for sitters. It is available in two color options – Ironsand Black and Cloud White, with the choice to opt for interchangeable upholstery toppers that are made from sustainably sourced New Zealand wool.

We’ve been seeing a torrential and exciting downpour of automotive designs at Yanko Design for the past few months. Each automotive was innovative, bringing to us something we had never seen nor experienced before. From killer speed to dashing good looks, to impenetrable safety standards, every automotive we featured at YD broke some design barrier for us, and hopefully, they did the same for you as well. Hence, we’ve curated a collection of automotive designs that we feel were the best of the lot. From a bicycle with square wheels to a Porsche e-motorbike concept – each of these drool-worthy automobiles is mercilessly pushing the boundaries of the automotive industry. Automotive enthusiasts will be itching to get their hands on them, and take them for a spin on the streets!

1. Ford Mini Bronco

The Ford Mini Bronco is designed by Mexico-based Kobayashi, and it provides a sneak peek into the year 2030 – the year this car is designed for. It features modern elements with a compact, two-door configuration, which reminds one of the Suzuki Jimny. The automotive attempts to redefine the off-road segment, by providing it with a unique perspective.

2. Gordieiev’s Bicycle with Square Wheels

Meet the bicycle with square wheels! Designed by Sergii Gordieiev, this innovative bicycle is like a war tank moving on its metal tracks without any wheels! The wheels on the bicycle don’t actually roll, but instead, the rubber on the conveyor belt-like platform rotates as soon as you hit your foot on the pedal. It is completely usable in a city, and you can take turns on it.

3. Mitsubishi DX Concept

Meet the Mitsubishi DX Concept. This is a compact yet versatile lifestyle van that perfectly portrays the company’s commitment to elevating the arena of adventure travel. It is called the “tiny adventure van”, and features a futuristic design. It was showcased at a Japan Mobility Show that focused on awakening the “adventurous spirit within”.

4. Lexus LF-ZC

Dubbed the Lexus LF-ZC, which stands for “Lexus Future Zero-emission Catalyst”, this four-door luxury car is a prototype for Lexus’ future cars. The automotive is equipped with a highly anticipated solid state ‘prismatic’ battery technology that will be showcased in Lexus’ cars by 2026. The battery will cover 1000 kilometers on a full charge.

5. Adventure Electric Unicycle

The Adventure electric unicycle was truly designed to push the boundaries of exploration! It features a beefy 4000 W motor capable of producing 200 Nm (147.5 lb. ft) of torque and 850 N traction force. This converts it into a powerful commuter that is ready to conquer steep inclines and uneven terrain with the utmost ease and efficiency! It accelerates from 0 to 50 km/h in just 2.5 seconds and goes at a top speed of 110 km/h.

6. Diode

Designed by Tien Hung, the Diode is an e-bike concept that features a neo-minimalist design that celebrates the future of electric power train. The form and design of the bike are almost invisible, except for one singular horizontal pillar that spans from the dashboard to the taillight. There is a large battery module located under the pillar.

7. MOQBA

The MOQBA is not simply a two-wheeled wonder, it rides on four independent legs with wheel extensions, so it can be called an electric mecha, or more accurately a mini mecha. MOQBA gets a conventional saddle which can morph into supporting seating when climbing up the stairs or moving ahead in the walking configuration – in its bike configuration.

8. Acro

Designed by Klissarov Design, the Acro is an ultralight aircraft that completely eliminates the need for a pilot’s license. The aircraft utilizes AI to provide assistance during operation, offering a harmonious, smooth, and safe flying experience. The use of AI is quite unique and useful, as it allows a large range of aviation enthusiasts to experience the thrill of piloting their own aircraft.

9. Porsche 619 Electric Concept

Designed by Jackson Zhang, the Porsche 619 electric concept is an exciting response to Porsche’s plans to go electric by 2030. The 619 is the first proper electric motorcycle we’ve seen, and it features a unique design, putting Porsche’s automotive DNA in the backseat, while also creating something that is minimalist, geometry-driven, and iconic!

10. Restorer NEV

The Restorer NEV is a chick four-wheeler with spacious interiors that can accommodate a family of four! It was revealed during the motorsports gathering at the Quail. The zero-emission urban ride is powered by a twin-electric motor drivetrain that is supported by pouch-cell lithium-ion batteries. This allows the NEV to reach a top speed of 25 mph!
