New Balance’s $200 Cowhide Sneaker Nobody Asked For Actually Works

Western wear has been everywhere in footwear this year, and if you’ve spent any time scrolling sneaker releases lately, you’ve probably noticed the problem before you could name it. Half the shoes chasing the trend go full costume, fringe and turquoise and all, like they’re auditioning for a rodeo. The other half barely commit, tossing in a stitched detail and calling it a day. There hasn’t been much room in between for someone who actually wants the look without feeling like they raided a theme park gift shop.

New Balance seems to have noticed the same gap, because its new 1890A “Cowhide” splits the difference in a way that feels almost too obvious once you see it. The shoe takes actual cow leather, black and white print and all, and instead of plastering it across the whole upper, tucks it underneath an off-white suede apron. You get the reference without the costume. That’s the whole trick, and it works.

Designer: New Balance

I’ve watched the 1890A evolve since it launched last year as the moccasin cousin of New Balance’s 1890 trainer, and it’s always been the weirder sibling in the lineup. The apron construction alone sets it apart from most retro runners on shelves right now, which tend to recycle the same handful of silhouettes with slightly different mesh panels. This one has actual moccasin stitching running across the front, which gives it texture you can feel with your eyes before you even touch it. The brand already tried a snakeskin version earlier this year, and I’ll admit that one felt closer to novelty than function. The cowhide colorway corrects that. It’s the more grown-up sibling of the two.

What sells me on this particular pair is the restraint. The cow print never takes over the shoe. It peeks out from under the suede, showing up on overlays rather than dominating the whole canvas, and New Balance backs it up with solid color blocking on the vamp, tongue, and collar to keep everything grounded. The eye still goes to the print first, but it doesn’t scream. That balance is harder to pull off than people give it credit for, and plenty of brands chasing Western style this year haven’t figured it out.

None of that would matter much if the shoe wasn’t comfortable to actually wear, and this is where New Balance leans on what it does best. The 1890A keeps the ABZORB midsole cushioning from the standard version, along with a stable heel built for daily wear rather than occasional statement-piece duty. So you’re not sacrificing comfort to make a style point, which solves the other half of the problem nobody talks about enough. A lot of trend-driven sneakers look great in photos and feel like punishment after three hours on your feet. This one doesn’t ask you to choose.

At $200, it’s not an impulse buy, but it’s priced in line with what New Balance charges for its other premium lifestyle drops, and the materials justify it. Real cow leather isn’t cheap, and neither is a suede apron construction that requires more assembly than a standard mesh upper. You’re paying for the craft as much as the look.

I don’t think everyone needs a cow-print sneaker in their rotation, and I say that as someone who finds the pattern genuinely fun rather than gimmicky. But if you’ve been eyeing the Western trend and felt like every option asked you to go all in or stay home, this is the shoe that meets you somewhere reasonable. It refuses to pick a lane between subtle and bold, and somehow that indecision becomes its best quality.

New Balance has quietly become one of the more interesting brands in sneakers precisely because it keeps taking swings like this one, odd colorways on odd silhouettes that shouldn’t work on paper. The 1890A “Cowhide” isn’t going to convert anyone who hates the Western look outright. But for the rest of us standing in the middle, wondering if there’s a version of the trend we could actually wear to dinner, New Balance just handed us one.

MOFT’s Snap Fold Fits 5 Cards and a Stand on the iPhone Duo’s Back

Foldable phones solved the screen problem and immediately created a smaller, weirder one: there’s barely any flat space left on the back to stick anything useful. The MOFT Snap Fold for iPhone Duo tackles that head-on, built specifically for the Duo’s cramped rear panel rather than shrunk down from an existing wallet design. It still manages to hold five cards and fold into a stand, which shouldn’t be possible given how little room it actually has to work with.

Getting that footprint right meant working around obstacles most phone wallets never have to consider. The camera module on a folding phone sits somewhere that would normally get covered by a standard card holder, so the Snap Fold’s shape clears that housing entirely while staying tucked within the phone’s own edges. Nothing overhangs the sides or risks catching on a pocket, which matters more on a folding device than a rigid one.

Designer: MOFT

Holding five cards in that reduced space is the part worth pausing on. Most compact MagSafe wallets top out around two or three cards specifically because slim profiles and card capacity fight each other, and every additional card usually means added thickness. Fitting five into a footprint already constrained by a camera cutout suggests the internal card layout was rebuilt from scratch rather than adapted from a wallet meant for a flat, uninterrupted phone back.

The stand half of the equation runs on the same origami folding logic MOFT has used across its laptop stands and tablet covers for years, just reworked to survive a much smaller starting shape. Unfolding the wallet reveals multiple viewing positions rather than a single fixed angle, letting the same flat card holder become a way to prop the phone up for a video call or a recipe on the counter without needing a separate stand taking up space in a bag.

That dual identity only works if neither function undercuts the other, and this is where the tight design tolerances actually pay off. Card capacity doesn’t shrink to make room for the folding mechanism, and the stand doesn’t wobble because there wasn’t space left for a sturdy hinge. Both jobs get done inside the same limited footprint, which is a harder balance to strike than building either function alone.

Priced at $49.99, the Snap Fold sits closer to the premium end of MOFT’s wallet lineup, reflecting the added engineering that comes with fitting five cards and a folding stand around a camera cutout instead of across an open, flat surface. That price also positions it as a companion piece bought alongside a foldable phone already carrying its own premium, rather than a casual accessory picked up as an afterthought.

Building for a folding phone means redesigning assumptions that held up fine on every rigid iPhone before it. The Snap Fold treats that constraint as the actual design brief instead of an inconvenience, and the result carries more cards and more stand positions than the smaller back panel should reasonably allow.
