This Saucepan Lid with a Built-in Chimney to filter fumes might be the most brilliant idea of the decade

Whoever invented this deserves a Nobel prize. Imagine being able to cook at home without staining your walls with oil, or without flagging the smoke detector. Meet Oilvent, a simple splatter-proof lid that sits on top of any pan you’re cooking with. Equipped with its own built-in chimney, the Oilvent filters and scatters fumes, while catching oil molecules that often end up creating grease-films around our kitchen. Instead of your kitchen needing to have a chimney, the Oilvent just directly puts one right over your utensil. It’s perhaps the smartest product I’ve seen in a while and costs 1/5th of what a modular kitchen chimney would.

Designer: oilvent

Think of the Oilvent as basically a portable chimney that fits on top of any cooking utensil you have. It has the shape and size of a large lid, sitting on small saucepans, wide skillets, or even large crock pots with ease. A mesh lid helps prevent splattering liquids from splashing out and onto the counter (or on you), and a handle focuses in on the center of the lid, which has a built-in air venting and filtration system. It’s a simple solution to a very common kitchen problem – smoke, grease, splatters, and VOCs. I say ‘simple solution’ because it’s so easy to visually grasp the two distinct parts of the Oilvent’s design… but on the inside, it’s a cleverly engineered chimney system that uses multiple filtration layers, and a powerful yet quiet fan that keeps your kitchen free of dense smoke and strong odors.

The Oilvent’s design truly evokes one of those “why did nobody ever think of this before?” moments. It comes with a lid-shaped form factor that also stands vertical, like a fan. This means, you can either use the Oilvent as a lid while cooking, or if you’ve got multiple burners working, just place the Oilvent vertically near your stove and it works like a chimney, sucking fumes from your stovetop in and filtering them out. For a more messy meal, however, all you need to do is lift the Oilvent and place it horizontally on top of your cooking vessel.

Place the Oilvent on top of your pan, switch the fan on, and two things happen – for starters, the Oilvent’s outer mesh layer keeps bubbling liquids or hot oil from splashing out of the pan and onto your counter or your skin. Simultaneously, the Oilvent’s mini-chimney gets to work, sucking air through as many as 4 different layers to catch grease molecules, charcoal soot, dense smoke, and volatile organic compounds or VOCs. The cooking fumes that usually happen during roasting, frying, sauteing, or reducing get turned into vapor – vapor that doesn’t stink up your kitchen, grease your walls, or trigger your smoke alarm.

The Oilvent’s large design means it can sit on any utensil comfortably without you worrying about size. Measuring 380mm or 15 inches wide, it works perfectly with all your utensils, sitting comfortably on top of their rim. The wide metal mesh serves an additional purpose apart from just containing splatters – it works as a sieve too, allowing you to do things like strain out pasta water, bacon fat, chicken/beef/veggie stock, etc. Use it just the way you’d use a strainer to separate liquids from solids… smart, eh?!

Four different filters in the Oilvent’s chimney help capture and purify fumes

The Oilvent works straight out of the box, needs no installation the way a chimney would, and can be used in both on-utensil and standing formats. A single button lets you switch the fan on or off, and toggle through 3 different speed settings. Even at its highest speed, the fan just outputs 42 decibels, which is around the decibel level in a library. Once you’re done using the Oilvent, simply detach the handle (which houses the electronics) and place the mesh in a dishwasher to clean it.

The Oilvent comes in one singular size, and runs on long-lasting 18650-type batteries. These batteries are rechargeable, offering more than 2 hours of continuous usage, and depleted batteries can be juiced in just 10-20 minutes using a standard battery charger.

Designed to practically replace chimneys, the Oilvent is perfect for small homes, rented apartments, RVs, hostels/dorms, or any place where a chimney is difficult to come by. It’s versatile, works flawlessly, can be used both standing/resting positions, and costs just a fraction of what a modular chimney would. The Oilvent’s filtration system should last as long as the product does, although the activated charcoal filter is the only part that needs replacing every 2-3 months. Each Oilvent does come with a spare set of AC filters to make things easier. The Oilvent starts at $69, and ships globally.

How Whac-A-Mole helped inspire the creation of a Braille-learning Device

Shenzhen Califor Design Co., Ltd., a Chinese design firm has demonstrated its commitment to inclusivity and innovation with the introduction of a groundbreaking learning device for the blind community. This inventive product merges education with entertainment, offering a unique way to learn Braille through an engaging ‘Whac-A-Mole’ style game. Recognizing the lack of attention often given to the visually impaired, especially in today’s fast-paced information age, Shenzhen Califor has created a device that brings both enjoyment and the benefits of technology to this community.

Designer: Shenzhen Califor Design Co., Ltd

The new Braille learning device is ingeniously designed based on the six-dot arrangement rule of Braille, capable of simulating the configuration of all Braille characters. The device operates by pressing a large button at the bottom, which randomly selects letters. The six buttons on the keyboard then illuminate the corresponding Braille letters. Users complete the learning process by pressing the highlighted buttons in sequence, making Braille learning an intuitive and interactive experience.

A standout feature of this device is the use of buttons with a distinct texture on the top, enabling blind users to easily identify them by touch. Additionally, the button below features confirmation words, enhancing the practicality and user-friendliness of the device. The design incorporates larger, fingertip-sized dots, as opposed to the smaller dots found in standard Braille. This adjustment makes it easier for beginners to understand and retain the Braille alphabet, facilitating a smoother learning curve.

The device’s elongated shape, reminiscent of a handheld remote control, is both sleek and functional. Unlike a typical square design with popping dots, this device features dots on one side and a rounded edge on the other, allowing users to position it correctly with ease. Its long, flat design not only distributes weight evenly but also makes it comfortable for prolonged use. The compact and thin construction further adds to its convenience, making it ideal for extended learning sessions.

Despite its remote control-like appearance to sighted individuals, the device’s design includes a flat base, enabling blind users to place it on a table or floor for efficient use. This thoughtful design ensures that users can engage with the device comfortably and effectively.

With integrated ChatGPT, Play T 1 foldable phone is effortless to use via voice commands

When the mobile phone industry is swaying toward convenience and ergonomics, here’s one phone concept deviating from the norm but putting ChatGPT in your pocket. Well, if you’ve not been living under a rock, AI phones are already making waves, allowing enhanced photography and more applications for user convenience. With the integration of ChatGPT in its innards, the Play T 1 becomes a foldable mobile phone easy to use with voice commands.

With ChatGPT from OpenAI integrated into the phone, it would be helpful for users, limiting them from having to toggle between tools. A simple voice request would get photos and documents altered, emails perfected, and of course, webpages or lectures summarized for you.

Designer: Yeongkyu YOO

This is the right time for a product concept like the Play T 1 to energy. Only a few days back Apple announced the integration of a layer of AI into its new operating systems for iPhone, Mac, and iPads. The newly integrated artificial intelligence features would bring a striking change to Apple’s stream of gadgets courtesy of revamped Siri support, the ability to compose emails, or even create personalized emojis among other things, without the user having to use multiple applications for a task.

The Play T 1 with embedded generative AI at the core of its functionality will offer unimaginable capabilities to the handheld. The device is not a basic handset; it has been designed to be modular, such that different thickish modules can add up for functionality. The foldable smartphone and its accessories – the detachable 5000 mAh battery – are made from compostable plant-based materials, which make the phone essentially eco-friendly.

The detachable battery clips to the bottom of the Play T 1 mobile phone using magnets and can instantly charge the phone. By magnetically fastening it to a speaker base, the phone can effortlessly become a high-performance ChatGPT speaker you can command at will.

As the pictures depict, this folding ChatGPT phone is in itself pretty thick for modern smartphone users and when the magnetic battery pack merges with the main body, it does form a nice unified unit, but at the cost of additional weight and thickness. If the design is slimmed and the folding creases evened out, who knows the GenAI-based Play T 1 can have a future.

3D Printed Filter Cap Delivers Clean Drinking Water To Millions In Drought-Stricken Colombia

In Colombia, the dire reality of 3.7 million people lacking access to clean and safe drinking water has been aggravated by a severe drought in 2024. Many of these individuals reside in remote areas, where they endure extreme heat and scarce water sources, often contaminated and leading to thousands of deaths annually. In response to this critical situation, Filsa Water, a scientific company dedicated to developing infrastructure and technology solutions, has partnered with Ogilvy, Baylor International, and the Colombian Red Cross to introduce a groundbreaking product; the 3D printed Filter Cap. This innovative device transforms a universal bottle cap into a powerful water filtration system, providing an immediate and practical solution to the world’s water crisis.

Motorola Razr+ 2024 foldable phone upgrades might be invisible to the naked eye

After a short lull, we are entering the second half of this year’s batch of smartphones, most of which will be focused on foldable designs. While Samsung naturally grabs the spotlight, it’s hardly the only game in town. Motorola will try to beat Samsung to the punch next week when it reveals the latest iteration of the spiritual successor to its iconic RAZR clamshell, a foldable phone that some might even consider to have a better design. It seems, however, that expectations need to be tempered a little, as the 2024 Razr+, or the Razr 50 Ultra in other markets, might not carry any visible mark of being a new model, as the improvements will mostly be internal and invisible, at least based on this latest leak.

Designer: Motorola (va @MysteryLupin)

To give credit where credit is due, Motorola has always taken the bolder stance when it came to the design of its clamshell foldable. It was the first to use a large second screen on its back, and it’s now the only one that has a Cover Display that, well, covers the entire surface of the phone’s upper back. There will always be debates on whether having two holes on that screen for the cameras is better or worse than the tab-like cutout on the Galaxy Z Flip, but there’s little argument that it opens the door to more functionality, including displaying the same app on the outside that runs inside.

This signature feature of the Motorola Razr+ line isn’t going to change this year apparently, not even to slightly increase the screen size (the base Motorola Razr/Motorola 50, however, is getting the full-screen treatment this year). In fact, you might not be able to distinguish the 2023 and 2024 models just by looking at them. Of course, there will be upgrades, but most of them are the invisible features of the phone, and we’re not talking just about specs.

For example, this year’s Motorola foldable will bump up the water protection, though worryingly at the cost of dust protection. According to a leaked promotional video, the Motorola Razr+ (2024) will have an IPX8 rating that’s more in line with what Samsung offers. That means it will survive an accidental dip in a pool or sink, but there’s no guarantee it will be protected from dust or smaller particles. Unfortunately, some might argue that the latter is actually more fatal to foldable phones and their hinges than water damage.

There’s also an indication that one of the cameras will finally have a telephoto lens, but the number of cameras won’t be increasing by one either. That suggests that Motorola will either ditch the regular “wide” camera or the ultra-wide shooter, though the latter is probably more likely. Again, it trades one feature for another, and hopefully, the benefits will far outweigh the sacrifices for Motorola’s customers. The Motorola Razr+ or Razr 50 is expected to debut next week.

Compact and Versatile: MetMo’s Multi Drive Pen Replaces Your Entire Toolkit

The Pen might be mightier than the Sword… but the MetMo Multi Drive is mightier than pens, pencils, swords, scalpels, screwdrivers, and even drills. The sleekest multitool from MetMo’s lineup, this pen-shaped device lets you swap out graphite leads for a whole variety of other instruments, from scalpel tips to hex-bits or even drill bits. It gives you every conceivable tool in the format of an easy-to-use, comfortable-to-hold pen, replacing your entire toolkit with something so sleek yet so versatile, that you’ll want to carry it everywhere. After all, that’s what EDCs are all about, no?

Designers: Sean Sykes & James Whitfield

Click Here to Buy Now: $108 $120 (10% off). Hurry, only 2/525 left! Raised over $425,000.

With the attitude of a fancy metal stylus, the MetMo Multi Drive puts a toolshed in your palms. It looks like a pen, feels like a pen, and is designed to be held like a pen too… but features a machine collet system on the inside that lets you add modules to your EDC’s body. The Multi Drive comes with an endless list of instruments that lock into its sleek body – from 3mm graphite leads (the kind you’d use in mechanical pencils) to hex bits, metal scribes, scalpel blades, needle files, grease leads (for writing on a variety of surfaces), and even a tungsten-carbide mini drill bit.

Knife, Pencil, Scribe, Drill, File and Micro Driver.

The MetMo Multi Drive takes the compact comfort of writing tools and brings EDC tools to it. A versatile gizmo, it lets you write, sketch, cut, carve, drill, file, assemble, and disassemble, all within its small format. It’s difficult to think of who the Multi Drive is specifically for, because it has a little for everyone. Whether you’re an artist, architect, designer, craftsperson, engineer, or a maverick creator, the Multi Drive has something for you. It’s easy to use, is ridiculously compact, and in signature MetMo fashion, is made entirely out of metal because plastic feels cheap, breaks easily, and is bad for the environment. In fact, MetMo itself stands for “Metal in Motion,” underlying the company’s unwavering pursuit of engineering excellence in industrial, aesthetic and functional design.

The metal collet system, or the mechanism that loads and holds all the instruments, is a refinement of an original design from 150 years ago. With newer technologies, MetMo’s managed to scale things down massively, creating a chuck-like gripping mechanism that allows the Multi Drive to hold onto the instruments you plug into it. A two-part outer design lets you twist to tighten or release instruments, ensuring that when they’re loaded, they’re secured well… and when you’re done, you can easily swap them out for new ones. In fact, the collet is strong enough to hold weights of up to 8.1lb or 3.7 kilograms, so you know that the instruments inside are as tightly secure as they can possibly be.

While it’s easy to think of its small size as being a disadvantage, the Multi Drive’s compactness is, in fact, what makes it so great. The all-metal construction is incredibly durable, and MetMo offers aluminum and stainless steel versions of the Multi Drive, depending on what activities you’re likely to use it for. The Multi Drive also comes in distinct kits that prioritize different professions and activities. The basic 20-piece kit comes with the aluminum Multi Drive, along with graphite leads, a grease lead (that can write on cloth, glass, and even metal), scalpel blades, a flat file, two hex bits, and a metal scribe for engraving on soft metals, glasses, etc. All these activities require regular use that doesn’t put too much stress on the Multi Drive’s body. For more heavy-duty tasks, upgrade to the stainless steel Multi Drive and you can now perform more torque and pressure-intensive tasks like working with all sorts of hex bits (made from hardened steel), or even using MetMo’s tungsten carbide drills that load right onto the Multi Drive, letting you manually drill into wood and plastic with ease.

Upgrading to the steel Multi Drive gives you the option of getting its companion instruments in either a metal case or a leather craftsman pouch. The Metal Case, which is just marginally larger than a big smartphone, fits 24 hex bits, a metal scribe, a scalpel blade, and the Multi Drive itself along with a graphite lead included. The Metal Case also has an integrated graphite sharpener, and has magnets on the back, letting you mount the case on metal surfaces. The Leather Case/Pouch on the other hand has a more rustic appeal, with space for the Multi Drive, scalpel blades, metal scribe, 10 hex bits or drill bits, extra graphite nibs, 6 needle files, and some more. Innovative Sunflower-shaped Modular Concrete Fire Pit Redefines Outdoor Elegance

The Sunflower fire pit represents a groundbreaking innovation in the realm of concrete fire pit design. Moving away from traditional methodologies, it embraces a modular approach that not only enhances aesthetic versatility but also simplifies the manufacturing, handling, and assembly processes.

Designer: SHIFT

Typically, concrete fire pits are crafted using a single, large mold. This method, while effective, results in heavy, bulky products that offer limited design flexibility and pose challenges in terms of finishing, storage, and transportation. Sunflower disrupts this convention by employing a segmented design supported by an internal metal frame. Each segment is a smaller concrete cast piece, replicated to form the fire pit’s unique and eye-catching geometry.

The modular approach of this fire pit introduces numerous practical benefits. By requiring smaller molds, each concrete piece can be individually finished, handled, and stored with much greater ease. This modular system also facilitates on-site assembly, making it convenient for various settings and uses. The internal metal frame not only supports the overall structure but also ensures that the fire pit can be easily assembled and disassembled as needed.

One of the most exciting aspects of Sunflower is its potential for customization and experimentation. The modular design allows for a myriad of possibilities in terms of form and aesthetics. Designers can play with different colors, tones, materials, and finishes, creating unique combinations that reflect personal taste or thematic requirements. The design’s versatility extends to practical applications too; individual concrete pieces, resembling flower petals, can be easily replaced if damaged, ensuring the fire pit’s longevity and sustained visual appeal.

As its name suggests, the Sunflower Fire Pit draws inspiration from the natural world, specifically the intricate and beautiful structure of flowers. Each concrete piece mirrors a petal, contributing to the overall floral geometry. This not only enhances the fire pit’s visual charm but also adds a layer of symbolism and organic connection to its design.

When in use, the fire at the center of the pit is held securely by the internal metal frame. The light from the flames shines through the spaces between the repeated concrete segments, creating a distinctive and mesmerizing pattern that resembles the radiating light of the sun. This interplay of light and form not only adds to the visual allure of the fire pit but also enhances the ambiance of any space it occupies.
