When the CRKT Provoke first appeared, its morphing mechanism felt like a revelation. The design, which borrowed its kinematics from the way a jungle cat’s claws extend from its paws, was a jolt of fresh energy for an EDC world growing tired of endless flippers and predictable OTF switchblades. TiGo’s SyncraBlade now takes that same philosophy of complex, purposeful motion and applies it to the humble utility knife, creating something that feels just as revolutionary. The parallel linkage system that deploys the blade isn’t just visual theater, though it certainly delivers on that front. It is a direct solution to the finger-in-the-way problem that every traditional folder presents.

Watching the SyncraBlade extend is like observing a miniature precision machine at work. Two articulated arms move in perfect synchronization, carrying the blade forward along dual rails while maintaining its orientation. The entire assembly is milled from titanium, with every pivot point and linkage visible through strategic cutouts in the handle. This transparency isn’t accidental; TiGo designed a tool that wears its mechanical complexity proudly, appealing to anyone who appreciates clever engineering as much as practical function. The mechanism itself is a classic four-bar parallel linkage, a system engineers have used for centuries in industrial machinery (although maker TiGo likes to call it their ‘SyncraSlide’ mechanism). The blade carrier slides forward on a set of internal rails, but its motion is driven by those two external articulating arms. This setup ensures the blade extends in a perfectly linear path, keeping the cutting edge safely away from your hand throughout the entire deployment. Single-handed operation is effortless, and because the blade never folds, there’s zero risk of it accidentally closing on your fingers. Basically, clever engineering that solves a safety issue while looking gorgeous and feeling absolutely addictive. Looking at it will remind you of how a cat’s claws deploy from within their paws. At this scale, the SyncraBlade is roughly the same size (and probably even caliber) as a tiger’s claws – which sounds about as badass as the knife is designed to be.

That entire intricate assembly is machined from Grade 5 titanium, which explains the sharp, angular lines and confident feel. This isn’t your standard stamped-metal utility cutter. The choice of Ti-6Al-4V gives it an incredible strength-to-weight ratio, so while it feels substantial, it won’t weigh down your pocket. Closed, it measures a compact 115mm long and weighs in at 118 grams, putting it right in the sweet spot for everyday carry. The bead-blasted finish gives it a subtle, non-reflective quality that highlights the milled textures on the handle and linkage arms. Every surface feels deliberate, designed for both aesthetic appeal and functional grip.

The titanium handle encases a cleverly integrated standard user-replaceable utility blade that’s both sharp and interchangeable, making it a perfect choice for brutal functionalists who hate the idea of ‘blade maintenance’. The way the blade ejects is visually addictive, sure. But it’s also safer than your average flipper. A flipper blade often uses a torsion spring, which causes the blade to arc out and stop in its open position. If there’s no spring-loaded action, the blade almost always requires two hands to open and close – or at best, one hand with a bit of a struggle. If you’ve ever pulled out a sofa-bed, you know that a well-made parallel linkage can be activated with just a single hand. The SyncraBlade encourages that level of ease, allowing you to both deploy as well as shut the blade with a single thumb-motion. This is also safer because the blade’s edge never really comes in the path of your hands. A folding blade’s curved path means you need to move your fingers out of the way while opening and closing the blade – the SyncraBlade’s parallel linkage eliminates that need entirely. Grip the knife exactly how you used to, the blade never comes in contact with your skin – making it reliable to deploy in the dark, or even in any situation without having to look down at your knife.

The functionality doesn’t stop with the blade. Tucked into the tail end of the handle is an integrated pry bar and a wire-gate carabiner clip. These aren’t afterthoughts; they’re seamlessly incorporated into the titanium body. The pry bar is robust enough for light-duty tasks that would destroy a knife tip, like scraping or opening paint cans. At CES 2026, where every tech company seemed legally obligated to add AI to something, Ugreen announced a power bank with voice recording. The MagFlow AI Voice Recording Magnetic Power Bank packs 10,000 mAh, wireless charging, and AI-powered note-taking into one device. It’s either brilliantly practical or completely unnecessary, depending on how often you find yourself needing both a dead phone and a voice memo at the exact same moment.

The real question is what market Ugreen’s actually targeting. Dedicated AI recorders like Plaud and Limitless offer superior transcription and integration with productivity tools. Meanwhile, power bank buyers are mostly obsessed with capacity, charging speed, and MagSafe compatibility. Ugreen’s product sits awkwardly between these worlds, somehow simultaneously targeting both the serious note-taker as well as the charging purist. Maybe that’s the genius: creating a category where none existed, or maybe it’s just feature creep with good intentions.

You’ve got 10,000 mAh, which is respectable but standard for MagSafe-compatible power banks in 2026. Wireless charging is included, though the company hasn’t confirmed whether there’s a USB-C port for wired fast charging. A digital display shows battery level and presumably real-time charging stats. Then there’s the voice recording hardware with built-in AI for translation and summarization, which sounds impressive until you realize Ugreen hasn’t explained how you’ll actually access these recordings. Is there an app? Does it sync to your phone? Do you have to plug it into a computer and dig through files like it’s 2015?

Compare this to something like the Plaud NotePin, which costs around $169 and is purpose-built for recording. It connects seamlessly to your phone, transcribes in real time, integrates with LLMs like ChatGPT for summaries, and weighs practically nothing. Or look at the power bank side of things. Ugreen’s own Qi2 25W MagFlow Power Bank retails for $89.99 (currently $69.99 on Amazon) and does one thing exceptionally well: charges your devices fast. This new AI version will almost certainly cost more, probably around $120 to $150 if I had to guess, which puts it in direct competition with premium power banks that offer higher capacity or faster charging speeds. Not to mention most AI services do come with the looming threat of a subscription fee at some point. Imagine subscribing to a power bank…

Jokes aside, the bundling makes sense if you’re the kind of person who carries too much stuff and wants to consolidate. A journalist running between interviews could theoretically use this to charge their phone while recording background audio for articles. Students might appreciate having one device that keeps their laptop alive during lectures while capturing notes they can summarize later. But these use cases feel niche, and niche products need exceptional execution to justify their existence. Ugreen hasn’t shown us that yet. The company has a solid track record with GaN charging technology and their NASync NAS series crushed it on Kickstarter with $6.6 million raised. They know how to build hardware. Whether they can build software that makes voice recording feel natural on a battery pack is the real test.

After seven years of exploring New Zealand’s open roads in an RV, a couple of travel enthusiasts decided it was time to plant roots. Their solution wasn’t a traditional house or even a typical tiny home. Working with South Base Homes and award-winning architect Chris Pyemont, they created the Bespoke Base, a 12-meter tiny house that challenges everything we think we know about compact living.

The Bespoke Base stretches 39 feet in length, placing it among the more generous tiny homes on the market. Where many tiny houses force occupants to navigate cramped quarters and vertical ladders, this design takes a different approach. The entire layout unfolds on a single level, creating an experience that feels less like downsizing and more like curating the perfect apartment. Wrapped in warm redwood cladding, the exterior hints at the thoughtful design within.

The single-story configuration means no climbing to a loft bedroom, no stooping under low ceilings, and no compromising on the fundamental comforts that make a house feel like home. For clients who spent years navigating the constraints of RV living, this accessibility was paramount. The spacious interior reads more like a compact apartment than a mobile dwelling, with room to breathe and space to truly settle in.

South Base Homes has built its reputation on creating bespoke tiny homes where luxury fittings come standard. Based in Tasman, New Zealand, the company earned recognition as the 2023 Tiny House Awards winner for Best Commercial Build. Their collaboration with Chris Pyemont brings architectural credibility to a sector often dominated by DIY builds and cookie-cutter designs. Pyemont’s expertise in coastal and high-wind zone construction ensures these homes can withstand New Zealand’s challenging weather conditions.

The Bespoke Base represents what happens when clients refuse to accept the usual tiny house trade-offs. Instead of squeezing life into a predetermined footprint, the design expands to accommodate how people actually want to live. This approach to tiny living isn’t cheap. South Base Homes’ models start at NZD 200,000, reflecting the premium materials and architectural design that go into each build. The price point positions these homes as permanent residences rather than temporary experiments in minimalism.

The Bespoke Base proves that tiny home living doesn’t require sacrificing comfort or style. For those ready to downsize without feeling diminished, it offers a compelling blueprint: thoughtful design, quality construction, and enough space to live generously within a modest footprint. This Pencil Sharpener Spins Like a Top and It’s Pure Genius

You know that moment when you find a perfectly ordinary object that someone has completely reimagined? That’s exactly what happened when I stumbled across Ferfereh, a pencil sharpener designed by Maryam Fallah that’s basically a spinning top in disguise. And honestly, it’s the kind of design that makes you wonder why no one thought of this before.

Let’s be real for a second. Pencil sharpeners are usually the most boring things on your desk. They sit there, doing their one job, looking completely utilitarian and forgettable. But Fallah decided to flip that script entirely. What if your pencil sharpener could also be a desk toy? What if the simple act of sharpening your pencil could bring a little joy to your workspace?

The design itself is pretty striking. Picture a spinning top with those gorgeous, swooping curves that make you want to reach out and give it a whirl. The body comes in eye-catching color combinations like a deep blue that fades into vibrant orange, or sleek all-black and white versions. It’s the kind of object that doesn’t hide in your desk drawer but sits proudly on display, adding a pop of personality to your space.

But here’s where it gets really interesting. This wasn’t just a “wouldn’t it be cool if” kind of concept. Fallah spent six months developing this as a student project at Haute École Arc in Switzerland, studying industrial design engineering. And the process? It’s honestly fascinating. She explored tons of different shapes, from what looks like traditional spinning tops to more abstract forms, even some that resembled swans and other playful figures. The sketches show just how many directions this could have gone.

The final design landed on that iconic top shape for good reason. It had to work as both a functional pencil sharpener and an actual spinning toy. That meant getting the engineering just right. The sharpener is made of two main pieces that screw together, with a reservoir inside to catch all those pencil shavings. Simple enough, right? But the tricky part was making sure it could actually spin properly.

Through 3D printing prototypes and testing, Fallah discovered that the weight of the metal sharpening mechanism and its position affected how well the top would rotate. The pencil and sharpener weren’t symmetrically placed inside, which threw off the balance. Even the slope and overall shape had a major impact on performance. So she dove into actual engineering equations used for spinning tops to optimize the design. After multiple rounds of prototypes, she landed on a form that spins beautifully.

What I love about this project is how it challenges our assumptions about everyday objects. We’ve been conditioned to think that tools should look like tools, that function and fun are separate categories. But why? Your desk is your creative space, your thinking zone. Why shouldn’t the objects on it spark a little delight?

There’s something refreshing about seeing a designer take a mundane object seriously enough to give it this much attention. The photos show Ferfereh sitting on a clean, modern desk next to notebooks and glasses, looking completely at home. You can imagine giving it a spin while you’re thinking through a problem or just taking a mental break. It transforms a routine task into a moment of play.

This kind of thoughtful design speaks to a larger trend we’re seeing in contemporary product design. People want objects that do more than just function. They want things that feel good to use, that have personality, that make their spaces more interesting. Ferfereh delivers on all fronts. It sharpens your pencils effectively while also serving as a kinetic desk sculpture that invites interaction. Whether you’re a designer, a student, someone who still loves the analog pleasure of writing with actual pencils, or just a person who appreciates clever design, Ferfereh hits that sweet spot. It’s practical without being boring, playful without sacrificing function, and beautiful enough to make you rethink what a simple desk accessory can be.

The best VPN service for 2026

As frustrating as it is that governments and businesses are running roughshod over our online freedoms, at least we have plenty of good VPNs to keep us protected online. There are so many fast, intelligently designed, full-featured and affordable services on the market that the biggest problem is picking one. For any use case, you can bet at least two providers will be neck-and-neck for first place.

On the other hand, the VPN world is still the Wild West in some ways. It's easy enough to slap a cheap VPN together that the market is flooded with low-quality apps that put more money into advertising than infrastructure. They may look good, but it's all styrofoam under the hood.

I built this list of the best VPNs after intensive testing to help you reorient your focus on the providers that actually deserve your time and money. Which one truly fits your needs is dependent on who you are and what you do online, but if you pick any of my seven recommendations, you can't go too far wrong. For each VPN on this list, I've shared which platforms it works on, how much it cuts into your download speed, where it offers servers, what other features are included and how much the best available deal costs. At the end, I'll list some honorable and dishonorable mentions, then answer some of the most common questions I hear about VPNs.

Editor's note: This list is up-to-date as of February 2026. We intend to revisit this list every three months at a minimum, at which time our picks may be adjusted based on changes in pricing, features, testing results and other factors.

The VPNs in this section didn't crack our top list above, but we're summarizing them here so you can see their positives and negatives as of the time of our evaluation. 

Windscribe is another well-known free VPN supported by paid subscriptions. In many ways, it takes the best from both Mullvad and Proton VPN, with the former's no-nonsense privacy and the latter's healthy free plan. Without paying, you can connect to 10 of Windscribe's server locations on an unlimited number of devices at once. We've just published a full Windscribe review that can tell you more.

Unfortunately, Windscribe didn't copy the most important part of Proton VPN's free plan — the unlimited data. You're only allowed to use 10GB per month, which isn't enough for regular streaming. It's also committed to a cramped and headache-inducing user interface that stands out from the crowd in all the worst ways.

Private Internet Access (PIA VPN) has a deeply annoying name — I assume whoever invented it also likes to hop in their Toyota Forward Motion to grab a gallon of Sustaining Cow Extract from the grocery store — but it's a worthwhile VPN whose pricing provides incredible value. Its monthly and yearly plans are good enough, but its three-year plan is the clincher. Not only is it longer than average, but you can continue to renew at the three-year level, so you won't see an unpleasant price jump the first time you re-up.

PIA's apps have a dark UI reminiscent of Proton VPN, which is always a good thing. It also supports port forwarding, custom DNS and the use of a SOCKS5 or Shadowsocks proxy as a second step in the VPN connection. You can even set the maximum data packet size to help out a struggling connection, as I cover in my full PIA VPN review.

The downside is that your connection will struggle a lot. While well-designed, PIA's apps have a tendency to lag. In my most recent battery of tests, it dragged oddly on my internet in ways that weren't directly reflected in the speed tests. It's also not always capable of unblocking streaming services in other countries, and while its server network offers 152 IP address options in 84 countries, it's heavily bulked out by virtual locations.

TunnelBear has a decent interface, which its target audience of VPN beginners will find very easy to use. Its speeds are perfectly good too, and I appreciate the depth and breadth of its transparency reports. But it's far too limited overall, with few extra features, less than 50 server locations and a free plan that caps data at 2GB per month.

VyprVPN often flies under the radar, but it has some of the best apps in the business and a very good security record (there was a breach in 2023, but it didn't crack the VPN encryption itself). It's also got a verified privacy policy, a solid jurisdiction and runs every connection through an in-house DNS to prevent leaks.

Despite all that, it didn't make the top seven because its connection speeds aren't up to scratch — you'll likely notice a bigger slowdown than average. It also has a troubling history of wild, seemingly experimental swings in its pricing and simultaneous connection limits.

Norton VPN is part of the Norton 360 package that includes the well-known antivirus software and other security apps. It's a nice bonus if you use Norton already, but as a standalone VPN, it falls short. My tests repeatedly showed it dropping encryption and revealing my IP address whenever I switched servers, and not all of its locations managed to unblock Netflix.

This isn't to say Norton VPN is terrible. It has a fairly large server network, user-friendly apps and some cool features like an IP rotator. It also recently revamped its OpenVPN infrastructure to improve speeds on Windows. But you probably won't find those things sufficient to balance out significant speed drops on other platforms or poorly written FAQs. I especially advise against Norton VPN for Apple users, as its Mac and iPhone apps are much more limited than their Windows and Android counterparts.

Choosing a VPN can quickly get you mired in analysis paralysis. We're here to help, but since only you know your particular needs, you should know the major red and green flags so you can make the final call yourself. Every reputable VPN provider offers a free trial or refund guarantee you can use to run the tests below. For more advice and dangers to look for, check out my article on how to tell if your VPN is working.

Compatibility: First, make sure your VPN works on all the platforms you plan to use it on. Most VPNs have apps for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS, but those apps aren't always created equal — check that the app for your chosen OS is user-friendly and has all the features you need.

Speed: Use a speed testing app to see how fast your internet is before and after connecting to the VPN (I use Ookla's speedtest.net). To check security, look up your IP address while connected to a VPN server and see if it's actually changed your virtual location. Be sure it's using expert-vetted protocols like OpenVPN, WireGuard and IKEv2. Try connecting to streaming services and seeing whether the VPN changes the available content.

Background: Do some outside research into the VPN's origins, especially its parent company, privacy policy and any past incidents. It's a dealbreaker if you can't figure out where the VPN is headquartered (which indicates a lax approach to transparency) or if it seems to have never passed a real third-party audit.

Server network: Look at the server network to make sure the VPN has locations near you and in any countries where you'll want an IP address — e.g. if you need a VPN to unblock Canadian Netflix, look for multiple server locations in Canada.

Customer Service: I also advise testing the customer support options by looking for the answer to a straightforward question. If phone support (versus email and chat) is important to you, make sure to prioritize that — and make sure it's available at convenient times in your timezone.

Pricing: Finally, check prices. See if the VPN is affordable and decide whether you're comfortable taking a long-term subscription for better savings. If you do get a multi-year plan, check what price it will renew at, since many of the cheapest subscriptions are only introductory deals.

To wrap up, let's answer some of the most common questions we get about VPNs. Feel free to get in touch if you have a query I don't cover here.

VPN stands for virtual private network. There are a few different types of VPNs, including corporate VPNs like Cisco AnyConnect, Perimeter81 and NordLayer, which are used to access a single network securely. For this list, though, we're talking about commercial services that let individual users access the internet with an assumed identity.

Whenever you get online, you're assigned an IP address — a digital nametag that tells websites where to send the information you request. For an IP address to work, it needs to be unique, which means it's possible to create a record of what an individual does online.

When you use a VPN, all the data you send to the internet goes through one of the VPN's servers before heading to its final destination. The VPN encrypts the connection between your computer and its server so the data won't trace back to you. Any website, ISP or third party that cares to look will only see the VPN's IP address, not yours. If you're interested in more detail, I've written a whole article on how a VPN works.

The three main use cases for a commercial VPN are security, privacy and entertainment. Using a VPN conceals your real IP address from anyone who might want to use it for nefarious purposes like cyberstalking, DDoS attacks or deducing your real location. It also keeps your ISP from profiling you for ads based on where you live or what you do online.

One side effect of borrowing a VPN's IP address is that you can make it appear as though your connection is coming from another country. You can use this to access streaming content and platforms that are only available in certain regions due to copyright. Changing your location can even get you better prices when shopping online.

Location spoofing can also be used to get online in countries that censor internet access, like China and Russia, as well as certain US states or countries — like the UK — that are adding barriers like age-gating to previously unfettered online access. All you have to do is connect to a neighboring country (or locality) where the internet isn't blocked. If you plan to do this while traveling, make sure you have the VPN downloaded before you go, as some nations prevent you from even loading a VPN's homepage. Make sure you check with local laws regarding the legality of VPN use as well — just because your VPN traffic is encrypted doesn't mean that authorities can't detect that it's being used in a given location.

Whether a VPN is worth the price depends on how much you value those three use cases above. It's no secret that your personal information is profitable for a lot of people, from illicit hackers to corporations to law enforcement. A VPN will not make you completely anonymous, nor is it a license to commit crimes (see the next question) but it will give you a lot more control over what you transmit to the world.

With entertainment, the value is even clearer. You can use a VPN to fight back against streaming balkanization by getting more shows and movies out of a single platform — for example, a lot of shows that have been kicked off American Netflix are still on Netflix in other countries.

A VPN does not make it impossible for you to be unmasked or taken advantage of online. It prevents you from passively leaking information, keeps your IP address undiscoverable on public wi-fi networks and gets you around online censorship.

However, if you share personal information of your own volition, there's nothing the VPN can do. If you reveal your password in a social media post or click a link in a phishing email, that information bypasses the VPN. Likewise, if you do anything sensitive while logged into an account, the account holder will have that information even if you're using a VPN.

A VPN is a critical part of your online security, but it can't do the whole job by itself. Healthy passwords, malware scanners, private search engines and common sense all have roles to play. Never forget, too, that using a VPN means trusting the VPN provider with access to information that's concealed from everyone else — make sure you trust the privacy policy before signing up.

As far as we can determine, all the VPNs recommended in this story are safe to use. As with anything you subscribe to online, due diligence is important, but there's very little inherent risk; generally, the worst thing a bad VPN will do is fail to work, leaving you no worse off than before.

All that said, there are some VPNs (usually offered for free) that transmit malware, and others that pretend to be independent services while all secretly working off the same backend. Always make sure to look up any complaints or warnings about a service before you download it.

Absolutely — almost every VPN has apps for both desktop and mobile devices. A good VPN will redesign its app to be mobile-friendly without dropping too many features. Both iOS and Android natively support VPN connections, so you're free to choose whichever provider you like.

Google One VPN was, as you might expect, a VPN provided by Google. It was launched in 2020 for Google One subscribers and discontinued in 2024 due to lack of use. If you really want a Google VPN, you can still get one if you have certain Pixel models or if you're a Google Fi subscriber.

That said, I don't recommend using a VPN from Google even if you do still have access to one. Google is one of the worst big tech companies at protecting user privacy. While its VPN might not leak, I wouldn't trust it to guard your sensitive information.

Google is appealing the ruling from its search antitrust case to avoid sharing data with rivals

Google has filed its appeal to the Department of Justice’s antitrust case that ended with a federal judge ruling that the company was maintaining a monopoly with its search business. While the company goes through the appeals process, it’s also asking that implementation of the remedies from the case, which include a requirement that Google share search data with its competitors, also be paused.

“As we have long said, the Court’s August 2024 ruling ignored the reality that people use Google because they want to, not because they’re forced to,” Google said in a statement. “The decision failed to account for the rapid pace of innovation and intense competition we face from established players and well-funded start-ups. And it discounted compelling testimony from browser makers like Apple and Mozilla who said they choose to feature Google because it provides the highest quality search experience for their consumers.”

The company says that the requirement that it “provide syndication services to rivals” and share search data is a privacy risk and could “discourage competitors from building their own products.” Both remedies where compromises based on what the Justice Department originally proposed, which included forcing Google to sell its Chrome web browser.

After a 10-week trial held in 2023, Google was found to have a search monopoly in 2024 because of the placement it maintained as the default search engine on multiple platforms, and the control it exerted over the ads that appear in search results. Both arguments were key points in the DOJ’s original 2020 lawsuit.

Airstream World Traveler 22RB Travel Trailer is specially designed for beginner RV enthusiasts

A 22-foot camper trailer is an ideal size for maneuverability. It can be compact yet have just enough space for a decent time on the road. Airstream has, therefore, gone with this comfortable living size for its new World Traveler, which the Ohio company has built from scratch to be lightweight and aerodynamic, so anyone, including those just starting with towable adventures, would want.

Billed as a “launchpad for starting your own travel adventure,” the Airstream World Traveler 22RB Travel Trailer is crafted with the similar riveted aluminum that Airstream trailers have been sustaining their image and distinction with since 1931. Its construction and size ensure the 22RB is light and compact so as to be haulable by mid-sized SUVs, crossovers, and presumably by select EVs as well.

Arriving in 3,700lbs base weight and up to 4,500-pound Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), World Traveler 22RB Travel Trailer is only 7.5-foot wide, maintaining a slim profile for a comfortable drive on the road. As it’s slim and not overly long, an even beginner RV adventure can easily maneuver this behind their drive.

Size may be limited, but its spaciousness is not compromised. The Airstream 22RB is prepared for a total of four persons to live comfortably, courtesy of a rear V-shaped twin bed and a convertible dinette. What the company has done differently here is that the air conditioner is relocated from the roof and placed under the bed to make the trailer appear more streamlined.

Of course, the exterior is pretty Airstream, the interior is uniquely done. The walls are white, and the woodwork is not starkly different either. The cabinetry features a light laminate finish. The minimalist interior is different from the usual offerings, and this uniqueness is highlighted by the V-shaped twin bed in the main sleeping area of the trailer. Up front, a secondary sleeping area can be instantly setup at the dinette, which converts into a bed in a jiffy.

The daytime living experience inside is naturally maintained via dual-pane acrylic windows furnished with an integrated screen-and-blind system. The side entry into the trailer leads you first into the galley kitchen, which is provided with a two-burner gas cooktop, a mini fridge, and enough counter space for preparing meals for up to four people. Adjacent is a wet bath with a shower and toilet, both separate for residents’ convenience.

Standard options like heating and cooling are taken care of with a ducted facility, while the Airstream 22RB is furnished with a 24-inch smart TV, Bluetooth JBL speaker, and internet facility. All in a comprehensive price tag of $68,300. The 22RB Travel Trailer is available now, and if you want it ready for an off-grid adventure, Airstream is providing add-ons such as a 300W solar charging system with a 2.5kWh lithium battery for power, a microwave, a backup camera, and a specialized V-shaped bedding kit for living convenience.

Sony’s Upcoming Portable PS6 Aims to Challenge the Steam Deck and Switch 2 in 2027

Sony’s portable gaming attempts have followed a familiar pattern: innovative hardware held back by baffling compromises. The PSP had one analog stick when games clearly needed two. The Vita added that second stick but inexplicably skipped analog triggers and clickable thumbsticks, forcing developers to map essential controls to an awkward rear touchpad. The PS Portal finally nailed the controls by essentially splitting a DualSense controller in half, then rendered the achievement mostly irrelevant by making it stream-only. Project Canis, the rumored PS6 handheld arriving in 2027, needs to break this cycle.

The fundamentals look promising this time. Reports suggest full PS4, PS5, and PS6 compatibility with proper docking functionality, which would position it as Sony’s answer to both the Steam Deck and Switch successor. The recent PS5 low-power mode appearing in firmware updates telegraphs Sony’s strategy clearly: get developers optimizing games for portable performance now, before the hardware officially exists. With AMD’s APUs getting more capable and the handheld gaming PC market proving there’s demand for portable power, Sony actually has a clearer path forward than they did with previous attempts. The question is whether supply chain realities and component costs will force them to compromise again.

Sony recently added a power-saving mode to PS5 games that scales down graphics and frame rates, supposedly for energy conservation. But here’s what’s actually happening: they’re teaching developers how to optimize their games for weaker portable hardware before that hardware even exists. When Project Canis launches, every game with this low-power mode already has a built-in portable profile ready to go. It’s Sony creating a standardized “handheld mode” years in advance, which suggests they’re genuinely committed this time rather than half-heartedly supporting another doomed experiment like the Vita became.

The design remains anyone’s guess at this point. Concept images floating around Behance show sleek interpretations of what a modern PSP could look like, though these fan creations obviously don’t reflect whatever Sony’s industrial designers are actually cooking up. What we do know is that the PS Portal’s controller layout works beautifully, with full-sized analog sticks and proper trigger feedback. If Sony keeps that ergonomic foundation and adds actual processing power inside instead of relying on cloud streaming, they’d have something genuinely compelling. The Portal proved they finally understand that portable controls can’t be compromised versions of console controllers, they need to be the real thing.

The 2027 target might actually work in Sony’s favor despite the RAM shortage threatening to push prices up or launch dates back. Handheld gaming has exploded in ways nobody predicted five years ago. The Steam Deck created an entire category of expensive portable PCs that people happily bought. The Switch keeps selling despite aging hardware because portability matters that much to players. Sony entering this space in 2027 with a device that plays God of War and Spider-Man natively, then docks to your TV for the full experience, feels less like another doomed experiment and more like arriving exactly when the market’s ready.

The backwards compatibility angle could be the real hook though. Running your entire PS5 library on the go would be compelling enough, but reports suggest potential support reaching back to PS1 and PS2 through emulation. Imagine having decades of PlayStation history available on one portable device, from classic JRPGs to current blockbusters. The Switch has proven that players will rebuy old favorites for portability, but Sony wouldn’t need to resell anything if they nail backwards compatibility. Your existing library just works, from launch day classics you bought fifteen years ago to whatever drops next month. That’s the kind of feature that turns a neat gadget into something you’d actually carry everywhere.
