The most annoying part of any card game is obviously the shuffling (unless you’re good at it). It seems like a laborious activity that almost always causes one or two stray cards to fly out and fall on the floor… and even after shuffling your cards, someone is bound to tell you that you did a terrible job because they got a dealt a bad hand. I’ve ruined many a deck shuffling cards that eventually got bent out of shape, and I’ve always thought of what life would be like if I had a machine that shuffled my cards for me. Turns out, Pedro Lara went and built himself one instead of buying it online. The LEGO Ornate Card Shuffler is a pretty nifty-looking functional shuffler that uses a combination of gears to accurately shuffle a deck with surprising consistency.

Although Lara doesn’t specify how many bricks were used to build the card shuffler, it’s worth admiring how the overall contraption is both functional and classy. The word ornate isn’t thrown in for nothing – the ‘black box’ has a variety of golden trims that add an aesthetic touch to the contraption. Two chambers on the left and right hold both halves of the deck, and once the shuffler gets to work, the cards are shuffled into a central deck, which can be pulled out thanks to a removable drawer.

The card shuffler utilizes LEGO Technic gears that connect both left and right chambers. The uppermost cards are pulled using friction from rubber tires. For people familiar with card games, the machine uses a variation of what’s called the Riffle Shuffle, which alternates the cards from the left and right, breaking any patterns within the existing deck. While Lara’s original design works with a LEGO electric motor, it can also be operated manually with a lever. The gear mechanism provides significant leverage, making manual shuffling a fun and efficient option.

Pedro Lara’s self-made design or MOC (My Own Creation) can be found on the LEGO Ideas Forum, an online dashboard where LEGO enthusiasts upload their own zany designs and have the community vote for their favorite creations. With just under 2000 votes, Lara’s design seems to be picking up traction and has even received a Staff Pick recommendation from the LEGO team. Think of the Oilvent as basically a portable chimney that fits on top of any cooking utensil you have. It has the shape and size of a large lid, sitting on small saucepans, wide skillets, or even large crock pots with ease. A mesh lid helps prevent splattering liquids from splashing out and onto the counter (or on you), and a handle focuses in on the center of the lid, which has a built-in air venting and filtration system. It’s a simple solution to a very common kitchen problem – smoke, grease, splatters, and VOCs. I say ‘simple solution’ because it’s so easy to visually grasp the two distinct parts of the Oilvent’s design… but on the inside, it’s a cleverly engineered chimney system that uses multiple filtration layers, and a powerful yet quiet fan that keeps your kitchen free of dense smoke and strong odors.

The Oilvent’s design truly evokes one of those “why did nobody ever think of this before?” moments. It comes with a lid-shaped form factor that also stands vertical, like a fan. This means, you can either use the Oilvent as a lid while cooking, or if you’ve got multiple burners working, just place the Oilvent vertically near your stove and it works like a chimney, sucking fumes from your stovetop in and filtering them out. For a more messy meal, however, all you need to do is lift the Oilvent and place it horizontally on top of your cooking vessel.

The Bugatti Tourbillon comes with a 1800 HP hybrid engine and the most insane steering wheel ever

Bugatti has a long history of shattering expectations in the world of hyper sport cars. From the Veyron’s record-breaking horsepower to the Chiron’s mind-bending acceleration, each new model pushes the boundaries of what’s possible. The 2026 Bugatti Tourbillon doesn’t just continue this legacy; it rewrites it entirely. However, it does so in the most Bugatti way possible. The Tourbillon, which unexpectedly dropped today, might just be the iPad of cars – outwardly, it looks relatively unchanged, with perhaps a few tweaks to a design language that is unabashedly Bugatti… but just like the iPad Pro shattered expectations with the M4 chip, the Bugatti Tourbillon does with its new hybrid engine, and arguably one of the most bonkers-looking steering wheels I’ve ever seen in a non-F1 car.

The Tourbillon marks a significant departure from its predecessors. Unlike the Veyron and Chiron, whose souls were powered by the mighty W16 engine, the Tourbillon ushers in a new era of electrification for Bugatti. At the heart of this new beast lies a colossal 8.3-liter, naturally-aspirated V16 engine, co-developed with Cosworth, churning out a monstrous 986 horsepower. This monstrous internal combustion engine is then supplemented by a trio of electric motors strategically placed throughout the car to achieve all-wheel drive and superior torque vectoring. Sure, we all lamented the day Apple killed the headphone jack (it’s been 8 long years since that day), but try and imagine a life without Bluetooth. Wires wires everywhere, data cables to transfer files between machines, and requiring to load all your songs on USB drives to play on your car stereo or home theater. Sounds like a pretty awful life, doesn’t it?? But how exactly does this magical thing called Bluetooth work? Let’s take a closer look at the fascinating world of wireless Bluetooth communication and explore the science behind its seemingly effortless operation.

Bluetooth’s roots trace back to 1994, when Ericsson’s Jaap Haartsen aimed to create a short-range wireless connection for mobile phones, booming in popularity at the time. This technology, using low-power UHF radio waves, would eliminate the need for bulky cables. The name, inspired by 10th-century Viking king Harald Bluetooth, aimed to reflect how the technology would unite devices like those once-warring kingdoms. The Bluetooth Special Interest Group, formed in 1998 by Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Nokia, and Toshiba, ensured standardization and widespread adoption.

Bluetooth utilizes radio waves for communication, but unlike the visible light we perceive, it operates on a specific and invisible range of the electromagnetic spectrum. This range falls between 121mm and 124mm in wavelength, significantly longer than the radio waves used for Wi-Fi. This longer wavelength allows Bluetooth signals to pass through walls, making it suitable for short-range data transfer within a room or a few meters.

The magic of transforming these radio waves into music or data streams lies in a clever manipulation of their properties. Bluetooth transmits information by altering the radio waves themselves. To send a binary 1, the Bluetooth antenna emits a specific radio wave with a particular wavelength. Conversely, to send a 0, it transmits a different wavelength within the designated range. This seemingly simple approach allows for incredibly rapid data transmission. In fact, Bluetooth can send and receive information at a million times per second, ensuring smooth audio streaming or data transfer without any noticeable lag.

But with so many Bluetooth devices around us, how do our earbuds differentiate between our phone’s signal and everyone else’s in a crowded space? This is where Bluetooth’s genius truly shines. It doesn’t rely on a single channel for communication. Within the designated wavelength range, there are actually 79 individual channels available. To avoid interference and ensure smooth communication, Bluetooth devices constantly hop between these channels at a staggering rate of 1,600 times per second. Imagine a crowded room filled with people having multiple conversations simultaneously, each conversation happening on a different frequency – that’s the essence of how Bluetooth avoids interference and ensures clear communication even in environments saturated with Bluetooth signals.

An additional layer of security is implemented through a process called pairing. When you connect your phone to your earbuds for the first time, they exchange a unique encryption key. This key acts like a secret handshake between the two devices. Only the phone’s signal with the matching encryption key can be decrypted by your earbuds. Even if someone intercepts the data stream being transmitted via Bluetooth, they wouldn’t be able to decipher it without the specific key, protecting the privacy of your communication.

But what if multiple devices in close proximity try to use the same channel at the same time? This is where Bluetooth prioritizes established connections. Your earbuds will recognize your phone’s unique encryption key and prioritize its signal, effectively filtering out unwanted audio or data from nearby devices attempting to connect. Student reimagines Police Car Interiors as a functional mobile office space for law enforcement

For decades, police cars have been an adaptation, not an innovation. Budgetary constraints often relegate officers to modified sedans, ill-equipped for the specific demands of law enforcement. But a recent design project by David Dahlberg, a graduate from Sweden’s Umeå Institute of Design, is challenging this status quo. Dahlberg’s concept car interior, envisioned for the Swedish police force in 2035, throws out the one-size-fits-all approach and meticulously tailors the workspace to the unique needs of officers on the go.

Dahlberg’s design directly addresses common complaints voiced by officers. Disorganized storage overflowing with loose equipment, cramped legroom hindering movement, and excessive wear and tear on the interior from frequent use were all major pain points.

The solution lies in a complete overhaul of the layout. Ditching the sedan platform, Dahlberg proposes a medium-sized electric D-SUV. This shift provides ample space for a more ergonomic design. The interior is divided into two distinct zones, each optimized for a specific role. The driver’s area features a streamlined control panel with essential functions readily accessible. Gone are the distracting infotainment systems found in civilian cars – this is a dedicated workspace prioritizing officer safety and focus.

Meanwhile, the passenger side transforms into a dedicated work area. Centralized storage with designated compartments eliminates the clutter of loose equipment, while individual compartments provide easy access to personal gear. A modular system allows for further customization, with officers able to add or remove accessories based on their specific needs. This passenger workspace even features a pull-out whiteboard, perfect for quick note-taking during field operations.

Technology is seamlessly integrated for maximum efficiency. Both the police computer and radio are mounted on a rail system, allowing officers to adjust them for optimal positioning. This flexibility ensures comfort and reduces strain, especially during extended periods on patrol.

The interior utilizes durable, easy-to-clean materials derived from recycled sources. This “circular” approach minimizes environmental impact, aligning with the growing trend of eco-conscious design. Perhaps the most innovative aspect of Dahlberg’s concept lies in its modularity. Each component, from the central storage unit to the passenger work module, is designed for interchangeability and easy upgrades. This not only allows the Swedish police to adapt the interior as their needs evolve but also opens the door for potential use in other professional settings requiring similar mobile workspaces.

Gerber Key Note is a Tiny Folding Knife with a Very Unusual Broad Blade Design

You usually expect knives to come with elegant, long blades that let you slice across a linear edge or serrations – the Gerber Key Note shatters convention with a Tanto blade that’s wider than it’s long. Measuring a mere 1-inch in length, the Key Note’s blade might make you feel short-changed at first, but once you get your hands on it, you realize that size honestly doesn’t matter. The blade’s double-edge design helps you do everything you normally would, while giving you an additional advantage of applying forward or downward pressure while cutting. At the end of the day, a 1-inch blade means the Key Note is just hyper-compact, making it small enough to easily fit on a keychain for carrying around wherever you go.

A unique feature of the blade’s design is its two-part edge. The lower edge is short, but lets you slice with great confidence, while the upper edge is almost perpendicular to the knife’s linear direction. This lets you apply pressure by leaning in while cutting. Whether it’s pressing forward, or holding the knife vertically and pressing downward, this edge gives you the advantage of letting you combine sharp edges with brute force.

Compact and affordable (at just $27) doesn’t necessarily mean cheaply built – the Key Note comes with an aluminum handle, a 5Cr steel blade, finger-flick opening as well as nail opening, and a liner-lock that clicks in place to lock the blade in its open position. After all, you don’t want the blade shutting on you while you use the knife.

The entire knife measures 3.8 inches when open, closing down to under 3 inches when shut. Weighing a mere 90 grams (3.2 ounces) makes the Key Note rather spry and easy to maneuver, and once you’re done, either hook it back to your belt loop using the keychain ring, or better still, slide it into your pocket thanks to the integrated pocket clip.

LEGO Botanical series to get upgraded with vibrant Chrysanthemum and Plum Blossom brick sets

It’s difficult to imagine that 92 years ago, when the LEGO brick was first introduced to the world, that the humble piece of plastic would transform into such a versatile element of creativity. Whether it’s used to make replicas of objects, actual functioning products, or even scaled-down versions of cars and monuments, LEGO bricks have evolved WELL beyond the simple cuboid-shaped simple-colored pieces that they used to be decades ago. Heck, we’ve even managed to turn the bricks into a flourishing movie franchise!

I digress, but this is just to preface the fact that LEGO is planning on expanding its already popular Botanical collection with newer pieces that bring nature’s grand diversity to your homes. Although not officially announced by LEGO, sleuths on the internet have found images for two new additions to the Botanical collection – a Chrysanthemum plant and a Plum Blossom plant. Vibrant in color, with a beautiful balance between abstract and biophilic, these plants are a gorgeous addition to homes. They come with their own stands that let you place them on coffee tables, credenzas, or even bookshelves, adding a touch of undying plant beauty to your space. No green thumb required!

The first set, 10638 Chrysanthemum, is a delightful recreation of the vibrant flower. Despite being the smaller of the two sets at just 278 pieces, the Chrysanthemum stands tall at 26cm, making a striking display piece. Housed in a decorative pot on a stand, the set offers a surprisingly affordable entry point to the Botanical Collection at €28.95 (price and release date based on European retailer listings). LEGO enthusiasts will appreciate the inclusion of the classic banana brick, reimagined here in three colors.

The second set, 10369 Plum Blossom, boasts a larger build with 327 pieces. This elegant flower reaches a height of 34cm and comes in a similar pot and stand as the Chrysanthemum, allowing for a beautiful paired display. The Plum Blossom also showcases some clever part usage, with the “Angry Birds crown” element finding a new life as part of the flower’s structure. Both sets are scheduled for release on August 1, 2024.

After winning 13 design awards, stilform still has a few tricks up its sleeve. Its latest iteration on the ballpoint pen might just be its most audacious one yet. With a magnetic cap that pushes the pen’s refill inside its body, the stilform FLOW is part writing instrument, part magnetic fidget toy, and a complete marvel of design and engineering. Redefining the meaning of minimalism, the FLOW comes with an all-metal design that conceals the writing tip in an unexpected way. A small cap on the top lets you deploy the nib, which pops upward as you lift the cap out, thanks to magnets. The cap then docks in the back of the pen, satisfyingly snapping in. Most critics would call this a fair amount of over-engineering, but they’re the same people who now laud the zero-gravity gel pen as a marvel of engineering. The cap sits on one end of the pen, concealing the writing tip underneath it while keeping the ink from drying or leaking – this detail, as minimal as it is, is what makes the FLOW a perfect hybrid between a ballpoint and a fountain pen. Gently lift the cap out, and you’ll feel the nib inside the FLOW’s body moving along with it. The cap and nib have a strong magnetic connection that allows this, while also giving the FLOW a unique fidget interaction that your hands will definitely have a lot of fun with.

There is a sustainable angle to the FLOW too – for stilform, the idea of a pen that lasts for centuries is an incredibly powerful one. Caviar & SpaceX collaborate over $6630 Luxury Watch with actual Starship Fragment inside it

That price tag shouldn’t surprise you, given that Caviar’s built its reputation on catering to the creme-de-la-creme of tech collectors. While most people know Caviar for its ornate smartphone cases, it turns out the company makes watches too – with the same luxury-forward philosophy. Their latest ‘Space Tornado’ collection features three watches that highlight the cosmos, but it’s the flagship watch in the series that has our eye. Priced at upwards of 6 grand (or roughly two Vision Pros), the Stargazer X-Edition watch comes with a 24k gold-plated body, a tourbillon at the 6 o’clock mark, and a relic of actual space travel at the 12 o’clock mark. Designed in collaboration with SpaceX, each watch comes with a fragment of the Starship spacecraft, carefully placed at the top of the watch as its crown jewel.

The Stargazer’s dial takes inspiration from Jupiter’s moon Europa. The dial comes with an icy, striated finish, referencing the moon’s icy surface with a blue ocean underneath – possibly teeming with life. It’s rather poetic too, considering that the watch’s movement lies beneath this surface too. The watch sports a main dial that tells you the time of the day, accompanied by two subdials, one serving as a power indicator and the other, as a 24-hour clock. The subdials are flanked by a tourbillon at the 6 o’clock position that fervently beats like the watch’s heart… but if your eyes can tear away from its hypnotic movement, it should find itself at the 12 o’clock position.

Sitting right at the top of the watch face is a small, practically unrecognizable fragment. Taken from the Starship – the largest rocket ever flown – these fragments represent space travel, along with humankind’s indomitable spirit for touching the stars. The fragment finds itself encased within the watch’s face right at the top, and is one of three such fragments that will be found in the Stargazer’s limited edition series.

The rest of the watch boasts Caviar-style luxury too. The body is made from 316L stainless steel, plated with 24K gold. The straps are high-quality calfskin leather, and the clasp on the back is gold-plated as well. The watch also sports an exhibition back, letting you view the movement inside. Caviar doesn’t specify the watch movement, but given the presence of a power reserve, it’s probably automatic – using your wrist’s movements to harness energy that powers the watch.

The Stargazer X-Edition is limited to a mere 3 pieces, making the watch rarer than most luxury timepieces we usually see. At $6,630, it still might be one of the more affordable tourbillon timepieces on the market, and the inclusion of a Starship fragment definitely sets it apart – but then again, watches in this range can often be impregnated with moon dust, mars rocks, or even meteorites. The Stargazer X-Edition is definitely a conversation-starter if you’re a space enthusiast or find yourself among similar-minded folk. The watch, at least at the time of writing this, is still available – and if you’re looking for a discount, paying with cryptocurrency gets you a neat 15% knocked off the original price.
