Experience Living In Nature By Blending Into It With This Luxurious Nature-Inspired Villa

In the heart of the tropics, where the dense forest meets a serene lake, stands an architectural marvel that feels plucked from the pages of a fairytale – the Blue Water Lily Villa. This design, a testament to the brilliance of its creator, captures the essence of biomimicry, echoing the delicate beauty of a water lily while remaining entirely practical and constructible. The villa is a perfect blend of nature-inspired elegance and modern functionality.

Designer: Thilina Liyanage

The Blue Water Lily Villa is composed of two stunning two-story structures, both offering direct access to the lake, making it an idyllic retreat for nature lovers. These villas, seemingly floating on the water’s edge, draw immediate attention with their unique design, inspired by the layers of a blooming water lily. Just as the petals of a lily unfold, revealing intricate layers beneath, these villas are carefully nestled within an array of petal-like structures that rise gracefully from the landscape.

Upon entering the villa, the lower level reveals a welcoming space designed for communal living. The open-plan layout seamlessly integrates the living and dining areas, creating a spacious and airy environment. The kitchen, though modest, is thoughtfully designed to cater to essential needs, reinforcing the villa’s focus on simplicity and harmony with nature.

One of the most striking features of the lower level is the way the living and dining areas open up to a small, intimate pool. This pool offers a refreshing escape, with the tranquil lake providing a breathtaking backdrop. It’s a space where one can truly immerse themselves in the natural surroundings, taking in the soothing sounds of water and the gentle rustling of leaves.

Ascending the stairs leads to the villa’s upper level, where the bedroom awaits—a cozy sanctuary that exudes warmth and tranquility. The ambient lighting adds to the room’s intimate atmosphere, making it a perfect place to unwind. From here, the space extends to outdoor cantilevered seating, offering an elevated perspective of the natural beauty surrounding the villa.

The outermost and lowest of the villa’s “petals” are constructed from metal frames covered in a sturdy fabric, giving them a soft, organic appearance. At night, the villa transforms as soft pink uplights cast a magical glow onto these fabric petals, bringing the entire structure to life, much like a water lily illuminated by the moonlight.

The upper villa’s structure is composed of prefabricated metal elements, which continue the theme of delicate, petal-like forms. These elements are designed to be thin and see-through, evoking the fragile beauty of a water lily’s petals. The primary structural components within the villa, likely made from locally sourced bamboo, further reinforce the villa’s connection to its environment. This choice of material not only adds to the aesthetic appeal but also underscores the villa’s commitment to sustainability, making it a model of eco-friendly design.

Blue Origin targets mid-October for New Glenn’s inaugural flight and launch of NASA’s Escapade Mars mission

Blue Origin’s New Glenn heavy-lift rocket and its Mars-bound NASA payload now have a tentative launch date. The company said on Friday that the inaugural flight will take place no earlier than October 13, carrying two probes built by Rocket Lab to help NASA study the effects of solar wind on Mars’ atmosphere. This will be the first time New Glenn flies after years of delays in its development, and the date cuts well into the window of opportunity for travel to Mars, which occurs roughly every two years based on the planetary alignments. That launch period opens on September 29 and extends to mid-October, per Ars Technica.

The mission will lift off from Space Launch Complex 36 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The twin spacecraft of NASA’s Escape and Plasma Acceleration and Dynamics Explorers mission (Escapade) arrived in Florida on August 19 to begin preparations and integration with the launch vehicle.

Now, the pressure is really on for Jeff Bezos-founded Blue Origin to get New Glenn ready in time. Bloomberg reported on Wednesday that the company recently suffered two failures at its factory that resulted in damage to hardware for its second and third New Glenn flights. But, a spokesperson told the publication that it’s still on track for this year’s inaugural launch.

Japanese-style Volleybak Sashiko Chore Jacket is reinforced with 1 million high-strength stitches

The Core Jacket worn by French farm workers and laborers as a daily hardy piece of outerwear in the late 19th century has had many forms of fashion in the last century. Now Vollebak has combined this famous workwear with the ancient Japanese Edo embroidery technique known as Sashiko, which means little stabs, for a modern iteration.

This combination of clothing from two different worlds results in the Sashiko Chore Jacket which is attractive to look at, warm during chilly days and lasts for a long time owing to its premium material.

Designer: Volleybak

The uniqueness of the jacket doesn’t end there as it is woven from a 5.5km of meta-aramid thread intricately shaped in a V-pattern. These patterns are a detour from the original lighting or arrow shapes used in the Edo embroidery. Vollebak has crafted the jacket with consideration towards longevity and roughness of use as the stitching is denser towards the hem as compared to the elbows. This enhances the movement around joints and provides strength in the high-tension sections.

The single long armid fiber used in the making is highly resistant to fires and durable enough to take on the odd cut from a Swiss knife. Other than that the maker uses high-quality Japanese jacquard cotton dyed in indigo. The material is then meticulously cut sewen and reinforced in the sashiko stitching method, following the body contours for a universal fit. Two angle pockets and chest pockets are added to the clothing. Thereafter, the jacket is washed to get the classic faded denim aesthetic.

Although the pattern of the stitch is different from the traditional knit method, the white stitch on the blue or gray backdrop (depending on the color you choose) is the classic sashiko combination. It’s like a Sierra of blue mountains with snow-clad tops on The Great Wave Off Kanagawa. For the eight buttons, Volleybak uses premium buffalo imitation bio-resin material.

Sashiko Chore Jacket is available in two colorways – Blue Edition and Grey Edition – for a price of £695 (approximately $920). The reinforced kimono-style collar of the Grey edition adds to the style while the blue edition goes for a more conventional collar style. Yes, the price is exorbitant but the attention to detail in making the jacket, especially the reinforced 1 million high-strength stitches, truly speaks about its exclusivity.

Living Vehicle GT39 rival’s interiors of luxury yachts, offers freedom of off-grid living on the road

Before the pandemic, we lived in a generously simple world with mobile homes catering to the bare minimum needs on the road. A bedroom, convertible living room, kitchenette, dry bathroom, and that was almost it. Most of the interior was paneled with wood and the exterior was done in aluminum for durability. Now, with the likes of Living Vehicle, a Santa Barbara, CA-based boutique travel trailer builder – that has been marrying luxury and sustainability over the years – is redefining the word: luxury mobile living with the new GT series.

Electric trailers by Living Vehicle have been close competitors to the Airstreams. These models are designed to sell a way of life that in Living Vehicle’s ideology is “sustainable, off-grid, and luxurious.” The company has ventured into a new category with the GT series fifth wheelers. These models: the flagship GT39 and the smaller-sized GT32, combine off-grid fierceness with luxury that matches the feel of a yacht on land.

Designer: Living Vehicle

Living Vehicle has always focused on developing off-grid mobile trailers that can be used for full-time living, the Cyber Trailer for instance. The GT39 may be a different unit in approach, but its fundamentals are aligned with the company’s signature style. The fifth wheeler measures 39-foot long and features an architecturally designed interior. It fits the master bedroom – with a king-size bed and panoramic windows – in the gooseneck and is apt for sleeping four to six people with a living room that transforms into a guest sleeper.

The Living Vehicle GT39 model tips the scale at 16000 lbs but has, and we cannot iterate enough, a motor yacht-style luxurious interior comprising 8-foot ceilings, hardwood flooring, powder-coated aluminum cabinets, and top-of-the-line appliances. The living room with reclining seats has a 70-inch home theater system and fireplace, just adjacent is a chef’s kitchen attached to a bar that doubles as a workspace. Next up with the bathroom with a composting toilet and a teak-paneled shower.

Stretching the interior luxury into the exterior landscapes is the fold-down deck of the GT39, which is spacious enough to be used as an outdoor dining space or an outdoor kitchen at the campsite. The fold-down deck is covered with a folding awning. The interesting element of this yacht for the road is the option of installing anywhere between 2.2 and 5 kilowatts of solar panels on the roof. Stretching the entire length and breadth of the LV model, the solar cells can extend onto the awnings for additional coverage. To enhance the self-sustaining capability, this fifth-wheeler’s solar system is supported by a hybrid backup power generator and complemented by a battery pack of 72kWh.

Since the GT39 is meant for permanent, long-term living on the road, it comes with four-season climate control, along with smart home technology, and Starlink connectivity. Living Vehicle is now taking orders for the new GT39, but the pricing for the model is undisclosed. If interested, you would have to get in touch with the company for a quote.

Netflix drops a gory new trailer for Terminator Zero, an anime from the studio behind Ghost in the Shell

The new Terminator anime heading to Netflix looks absolutely brutal in a trailer that dropped this weekend. Terminator Zero is set in 2022 and 1997 (the year of Judgment Day, as described in Terminator 2) and focuses on new characters: Eiko and the scientist Malcom Lee, who are being hunted by a Terminator. The series is produced by Skydance and Production I.G., the Japanese animation studio behind Ghost in the Shell and Psycho-Pass.

Fittingly, it drops on August 29, in a nod to the date of the fictional nuclear annihilation event. You can check out the new trailer below — but just a heads up for anyone who isn’t into anime gore, this clip is packed with it.

Netflix also released a six-minute look at the show’s tense opening on its companion site, Tudum, earlier this week. It begins in a nightmare version of 2022 before traveling back in time. Per the site:

Eiko later arrives in 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee (André Holland) who works to launch a new AI system designed to compete with Skynet’s impending attack on humanity. As Malcolm navigates the moral complexities of his creation, he’s hunted by an unrelenting assassin from the future, which forever alters the fate of his three children.

The show was first revealed to be in production late last year, when Netflix dropped a teaser under the working title of Terminator: The Anime Series. The first season will have eight episodes. And, dare I say it, it looks pretty good.

SpaceX will soon send the Polaris Dawn crew off to attempt the first commercial spacewalk

Polaris Dawn, a private space mission that aims to complete the first-ever civilian spacewalk, is expected to launch this week. On X, SpaceX said it’s targeting Tuesday August 27 at 3:38AM ET for liftoff of the Falcon 9 rocket that will carry the Polaris Dawn crew to orbit. Led by billionaire Jared Isaacman, Polaris Dawn plans to send its crew of four private citizens as far as 870 miles from Earth — farther than any human has traveled since the Apollo program. The spacewalk, in which two of the crew members will step outside the SpaceX Dragon capsule, will take place at an altitude of 435 miles above Earth.

The Polaris Dawn crew includes Isaacman, CEO of Shift4, as commander, retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Scott “Kidd” Poteet as its pilot, and SpaceX engineers Sarah Gillis and Anna Menon as mission specialists. Menon will also serve as the medical officer. The mission is expected to last about five days.

While only two crew members will actually leave the spacecraft during the flight, all will be exposed to the vacuum of space when the hatch opens — the Dragon capsule doesn’t have an airlock. It’ll be a critical test for SpaceX’s new Extravehicular Activity space suits, which the entire Polaris Dawn crew will have to wear to keep them safe. In an interview with Florida Today ahead of the mission, Menon said the suits have gone through extensive testing on the ground and expressed confidence in their performance. “We absolutely know the suits can pressurize there,” Menon said, adding that the team has “spent a lot of time pressurizing the suits at this point.”

Polaris Dawn will also put Starlink laser-based communications to the test in space for the first time, and gather data to support research into the effects of spaceflight on human health. The mission comes several years in the making and is the first of three planned Polaris spaceflights.
