It is designed to be an old-school external case for your beloved Apple Watch. Designed by Joyce Kang and C.O. Design Lab, the Pod Case is a beautiful celebration of the evergreen iPod. It is made from silicone, and will smoothly slide over the body of your Apple Watch, offering it a fun and funky throwback.

Since the watch’s screen almost matches the screen size of the classic iPod Nano, this design works well, creating an amusing fusion of the past and the present. The jog wheel on the front doesn’t work, but you can easily navigate and control the watch through the touch screen. If you’re a Gen-Z who never got to experience the iPod, or a millennial wishing to relive their glorious iPod days, the Pod Case is a great idea.

What we like

  • Works with all Apple Watch series, ensuring broad usability.
  • Silicone construction prevents scratches,

What we dislike

  • The retro design may not appeal to everyone.
  • It is best suited for use as a nightstand, so it may not appeal to all users.

10. iPod Classic 2021

Designer Andrea Copellino reimagined a modern iPod Classic that brings the nostalgic and lovely charm of Apple’s iconic MP3 player. This iPod Classic drew inspiration from the iPhone 12 Pro, featuring a stainless steel body and flat sides. The concept also includes a click wheel and Apple Remote Integration. The concept is a celebration of the beloved iPod Classic, weaving a surreal image of its potential future.

What we like

  • Features high-quality materials and a sleek aesthetic.

Apple and Georgia Tech Team Up to Design the Future of Chip Engineering

Apple’s efforts to shape the future of technology go well beyond the devices we use every day. The company’s New Silicon Initiative (NSI), started in 2019, aims to nurture talent in chip design, computer architecture, and integrated systems. With Georgia Tech now joining as the eighth university in this initiative, it helps bridge the gap between academic theory and industry practice, setting up future innovators for success in hardware engineering.

The partnership between Apple and Georgia Tech’s School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) builds upon a collaboration that introduced a digital circuit design course in 2022. This expanded initiative gives ECE students valuable access to Apple’s expertise in multiple ways. Students will have expanded coursework in integrated circuit (IC) design and the tapeout-to-silicon process, along with mentorship from Apple engineers, guest lectures by industry experts, networking events, and direct project reviews.

The final chip designed by ECE 4804 student groups embedded in a PCB.

A great example is the ECE 4804 VLSI Design: Theory to Tapeout course, created in partnership with Apple. This two-semester course takes undergraduates through the complete VLSI design cycle. In the first semester, students design a digital System on Chip (SoC) using industry-standard Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools. The second semester focuses on testing the fabricated chips manufactured using Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC)’s 65nm CMOS process. This hands-on experience gives students practical insights into chip design and manufacturing.

On October 3, 2024, a kick-off event at Georgia Tech attracted over 600 students, showing a strong interest in this collaboration. The initiative provides students with hands-on experience in integrated systems and silicon chip design, skills that are fundamental to the development of modern technology. The NSI program at Georgia Tech offers several benefits to students. These include scholarship and fellowship opportunities, such as a Ph.D. Fellowship in Integrated Circuits and Systems announced in October. The curriculum has been enhanced to focus on circuit technology, electronic devices, computing hardware, and emerging architectures. Students will receive direct feedback from Apple engineers on IC design course projects, giving them invaluable industry insights. Moreover, they will gain exposure to new technologies and industry practices, preparing them for an evolving tech landscape. These elements give students a valuable view of industry practices, preparing them for the tech landscape.

More than 600 Georgia Tech students joined the Apple NSI kick-off event at the Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons in early October, highlighting the excitement around this partnership.

Apple engineers will collaborate with ECE faculty to present guest lectures in various integrated system design courses. The engineers will also participate in project reviews in several IC design courses and offer practical feedback to help students refine their designs during the tape-out process. In the inaugural run of the VLSI Design course, every student design was validated as fully functional—a success that highlights the value of direct industry involvement.

ECE Professor Visvesh Sathe teaching the first VLSI Design: Theory to Tapeout cohort in Spring 2023.

“Working with Apple as part of its New Silicon Initiative allows us to bridge the skills gap for a workforce in IC design and computer architecture by preparing students with the technical abilities and skills to enter a rapidly evolving, always in-demand industry,” said Arijit Raychowdhury, professor and Steve W. Chaddick School Chair of ECE.

This collaboration represents an important investment in the future of hardware engineering and chip design. By bringing real-world challenges and professional feedback directly into the academic setting, Apple is helping to accelerate the growth of the next generation of talent. This initiative impacts Georgia Tech students and the broader future of technology development and innovation.

Looking ahead, there are plans to expand this course and explore new courses in other chip development areas, like analog and packaging. As technology advances, initiatives like NSI are crucial in preparing tomorrow’s workforce to meet the industry’s challenges.

Leica’s New 4K ‘Cine Play 1’ Projector Brings a Massive 300-Inch Screen to Your Home

You may know Leica for their expensive pro-grade cameras, but did you know the company makes expensive projectors too? Aside from high-end cameras, the company has made in-roads in quite a few industries that rely on optics, like binoculars, televisions, and projectors. Although the brand is most known for building products with a premium price tag, their latest projector, the Cine Play 1 has an unusually affordable price, considering its 4K output and ability to output a massive 300-inch screen to rival most cinemas.

I’ve long been an advocate for projectors. They’re the same price as TVs, while being portable and having the ability to cast displays nearly 5x larger than most televisions. While the Cine Play 1’s $3,795 price tag isn’t really “affordable”, it does feel so when compared to something like Samsung’s 146-inch “The Wall” 4K television that has an eye-watering $220,000 market price. Contrast it with any other leading 4K long-throw projector brand too, and the Cine Play 1 fits well within the $2000-$4000 range for its category.

Designer: Leica

So, what makes it special? For starters, the Cine Play 1’s compact design. We’re talking a sleek 10.3 x 9.5 x 9-inch box that packs a mighty 3,000 lumens, making it versatile enough for various settings—even well-lit rooms. Thanks to its triple RGB laser tech and Leica Image Optimization, colors remain balanced and vivid, while its 4K clarity holds strong even as you scale down to 65 inches. This adaptability makes it ideal for any space, whether you’re hosting a gaming night or screening movies under the stars.

The overall design is a nod to Leica’s strong minimal-metal visual DNA. With a Bauhaus-inspired single-piece aluminum body and glass front, it’s a minimalist piece that complements any space. As an optional add-on, Leica also lets you buy a floor stand that complements your projector with an all-metal design and hidden power connections that route cables through the stand’s central cylindrical pillar, rather than having the cable dangle aimlessly around and ruin your room’s aesthetic.

You’d expect anything with Leica’s brand name to nail the visuals and optics, but the projector does a stellar job with audio too. The Cine Play 1 is built-in 10-watt speakers feature DTS Virtual:X, simulating surround sound to create an immersive audio experience. This means there’s no need to fuss with external speakers; you’re set with crisp highs and rich bass tones right out of the box. User experience features like automatic image alignment save you from the usual trial-and-error of projector placement. And with HDR10+ and Dolby Vision support, Leica wants you to enjoy content in the quality it was meant to be seen.

With built-in WiFi, the projector also lets you stream directly from your favorite apps, turning any surface into a high-quality viewing experience without additional gear or hassles. The inclusion of Apple Airplay, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and multiple ports allows you to stream from smartphones, tablets, laptops, or external drives. The VIDAA smart system gives you quick access to popular streaming apps, while smart home integration lets you control it with just your voice.

Priced at $3,795, the Cine Play 1 is definitely a more affordable entry in the Leica lineup, aimed at enthusiasts who appreciate high-end design but are conscious of budget. And if you’re short on surface space, Leica offers a compatible tripod stand for an extra $495, so you won’t be restricted to a countertop setup. For those ready to elevate their viewing game without a massive home theater overhaul, the Cine Play 1 feels like an intriguing blend of luxury and practicality.

LG Unveils World’s First Stretchable Display that can Twist, Expand, and Stretch Up To 50% Like Elastic

Did that display just stretch or is it happy to see me??

We’ve seen folding displays for a decade now, but it seems like LG’s unlocked a magical new display capability – stretchable displays. Their prototype, revealed in Seoul, transforms how we think of screens: it stretches up to 50% more than its original size—quite literally expanding our vision of what displays can do. This achievement puts LG at the forefront of a unique new tech innovation, showcasing a level of versatility previously limited to science fiction.

Imagine a display that can expand from 12 inches to 18 inches, all while maintaining sharp, full-color clarity at 100 pixels per inch. It’s like having a screen that adapts to your needs, flexing and stretching without compromising quality. The potential uses are mind-boggling: think screens integrated seamlessly into irregular surfaces like clothing, or even medical wearables that conform to the human body. It could render folding displays obsolete too – why fold a phone when you can simply stretch it?!

Designer: LG Display

The screen’s specs are impressive for a prototype. It features a 100ppi resolution with full-color RGB, combining durability with flexibility. It stretches up to 20%—much like a rubber band—thanks to a unique silicon substrate, similar to what’s used in contact lenses. This substrate, paired with micro-LED tech, ensures that the display maintains sharp visuals and endures real-world wear and tear. Not only can the display handle heavy impacts, but its structure also preserves picture quality even under the stress of stretching and bending, setting a new standard for resilient, adaptable tech.

The tech under the hood is pretty impressive. Using a unique silicon substrate (the same material often used in contact lenses) LG has managed to significantly improve the display’s flexibility and durability. Coupled with a micro-LED light source capable of surviving extreme environments, this display can withstand up to 10,000 stretches without a dip in image quality. This durability sets it apart from conventional screens, which can be fragile and ill-suited for rugged conditions.

There’s also a unique blend of design and practicality here, particularly in how LG Display envisions the Stretchable screen fitting into various environments. For instance, it could be integrated into a paramedic’s uniform, delivering critical information in real-time during emergencies. Or think of a screen that shifts from a flat display to one with tactile feedback, potentially supporting accessibility features like Braille. By rethinking what displays can do, LG Display’s Stretchable technology points toward a future where screens become embedded into our surroundings and daily routines, merging seamlessly with the objects and clothing we use.

Aside from being able to flex, warp, and stretch, the screen is engineered to handle the elements too, from extreme temperatures to physical impacts. This resilience is vital for potential applications in fields like safety, where wearables could provide critical real-time information. For instance, firefighters could wear uniforms with built-in screens, delivering crucial updates directly on their clothing. Similarly, the automotive sector could see stretchable panels that mold to dashboards, changing shape to offer an intuitive interface for drivers.

Collaborating with 19 other industry and research bodies, LG Display has been working on this project since 2020, advancing not just in product design but in creating a sustainable ecosystem for future technologies. This collaboration with South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy speaks to the broader impact of this display technology—beyond products, it’s about leading the charge in next-generation materials and designs.

The display wing of LG debuted this unique piece of innovation at the Seoul Fashion Week by integrating the displays into clothing and fashion accessories like bags. Although just a proof of concept for now, commercialization is on the horizon, with LG Display targeting a more refined prototype by the end of 2024. The implications for industries like gaming, healthcare, and fashion are significant. This technology could turn any surface into an interactive display, from a jacket sleeve to a car dashboard. I just wish LG’s mobile division were around to put this magical screen to use!

AYANEO 3 handheld gaming PC brings a smootherr, gentler design to the market

Given how they’re targeted at gamers, it’s not surprising that handheld gaming PCs adhere to the conventions and stereotypes of gaming aesthetics. Most have angular and blocky shapes that exude a sense of roughness, and while not as numerous as on PCs or laptops, they do have their fair share of RGB lighting. It’s not a bad design language, but it appeals to only a small subset of PC gamers.

Gamers are, of course, more diverse, and their taste in devices and accessories can’t be easily generalized. It’s not just a matter of choosing between dark or light motifs, a choice that is rarely offered for these handheld computers anyway, but also about the general form and flow of the design. AYANEO’s next entry into this still niche market tries to change the formula a little bit by paying closer attention to its design than its predecessors.

Designer: AYANEO

Given the sheer number of powerful hardware and components that need to be crammed inside a small body, it’s only logical that these devices would stretch the definition of the word “handheld” quite a bit. In addition to their bulk and heft, the large majority of them seem to also embrace sharp edges and angular corners. That’s fine for a laptop or desktop, but not so much for an object you will always hold in your hand while using.

The AYANEO 3 iterates over the conventional design by introducing a lot of smooth and pleasing curves that make the product look less intimidating. It’s not just on the back of the devices where the fingers rest but also on the corners of the devices. There’s no denying that it’s a device designed for gaming, but now it looks more like a welcoming toy than a cold gadget.

There are also important ergonomic changes in the next version of AYAENO’s flagship device. The orientation of the analog joysticks and D-Pad/Face buttons are now diagonal, mirroring the arrangement of controls on an Xbox controller. There are also larger back buttons, though their odd placement could prove to be cumbersome, resulting in accidental presses.

The AYANEO 3 will really be taking a big leap of faith by offering options that go beyond just black or white colors. You’ll be able to select the kind of AMD Ryzen processor you want, depending on your budget, and even choose between LCD or OLED screens. All in all, it looks like a more refined version both in terms of aesthetics as well as options, inching closer to parity with gaming laptops.

2-in-1 retro device concept brings an AI speaker and record runner together

The recent retro craze when it comes to devices and even just designs of devices isn’t limited to just the people who actually experienced these things. The younger generation has a fascination with everything “old”, which can sometimes make older people really feel old. We’re seeing all kinds of product designs and concepts that play on this pseudo nostalgia (because it shouldn’t be called nostalgic if you didn’t actually experience it right?) and this trend will probably last for a long time. The best ones are those that are able to bridge nostalgia with modern sensibilities to get something that doesn’t just repeat what was done before.

Designer: Seunghyeon Kim (Focus Studio)

This concept for an AI speaker and record runner plays on the nostalgic feel that people are looking for. This is a 2-in-1 device for those who want to experience the convenience of a regular Bluetooth/AI speaker with the added different old school way of playing a vinyl record. The full device is a minimalist gadget that doesn’t give you a lot of features to maintain the external retro feel that you may be looking for.

The main part is a rectangular box shaped speaker complete with grills, a slider control for the volume, and the simple play/pause, rewind, and fast forward buttons. The power button and the slider control are the only colored spots in a silver monochrome device. There is a round thing on the left that at first looks like a detachable speaker but is in fact a record runner. This is a small record player that you place on top of an LP. It plays the record by pushing and pulling on the grooves, thereby earning the nickname of the vinyl killer (since some records get broken because of this).

The idea of a retro-looking speaker will most likely interest both those who want to get back to the good ole days and those that wanted to experience it in one form or another. The record runner feature may not be appealing though to those who prefer their vinyls to be played the regular way.

Old walkman becomes cassette player and storage unit

“Everything old is new again” is an adage that we will probably never escape. How we listen to music continually evolves but it seems that we still have a certain fondness for the old way like vinyls, CDs, and yes, even cassette tapes. Streaming music on our mobile devices is the most convenient but there’s a certain nostalgia attached to “vintage” that we enjoy. And of course, the music quality is way different to the compressed ones we have now.

Designer Name: Love Hulten

This designer is obviously of the generation that still enjoyed listening to music on cassette tapes since the main component of this device is his old Sony Walkman WM-EX655. And he still has a collection of cassette tapes so we know he’s a serious collector. What he developed is something straight out of a 60s science fiction movie. But instead of using it to conduct experiments, you use it as it was originally intended: to play sweet, sweet music.

What he came up with is a cassette player and storage unit for the colorful cassette tape cases. There’s also built-in dual circular speakers, keyboard switches and buttons with various functions like play, stop, forward, rewind, etc. There’s also an audio waveform meter to go along with the beat of the music and even a tape slot to put in the case of the album you’re currently playing. The cabinet looking device blends design and technology to give you a truly retro piece of equipment that still performs its original function.

It’s of course a device that he made for himself since he has been collecting and keeping cassette tapes. But unlike vinyls and CDs that you can still buy from a lot of places, I don’t know that many stores that still sell cassettes. So the possibility of having a commercial version of this is very slim.

Japanese wooden satellite launched to help curb space trash

The media focus on rocket launches, moon landings, and Internet satellites has inspired many to look to the stars for the future of mankind. There are still plenty of areas on the Earth that can be explored, but our expansion can only expand upward at this point. But even before we get there, we are already filling our outer skies with dozens if not hundreds of small metal objects known as satellites, and their numbers are only expected to grow as we move forward.

Satellites have various applications, from communication to observation, but none of them so far remain in orbit in perpetuity. We are, thus, facing a two-headed problem of a myriad of these objects cluttering the space around our planet as well as plummeting back down, sometimes with disastrous results. To find out if there are more sustainable options, the world’s first wooden satellite just made its extraterrestrial voyage in the hopes of replacing metal with wood in the future.

Designers: Sumitomo Forestry, Kyoto University

Satellites can orbit the Earth for years, but they will eventually be decommissioned and fall back to Earth. Most of their mass will burn up on re-entry, but the burning metal will release dangerous aluminum oxide pollution into the atmosphere. Wood will also burn up, of course, but the effects on the environment will be significantly smaller.

Made from Japanese hinoki or cypress wood, the boxy LingoSat satellite is designed to test the theory of replacing metal satellites with wood-enclosed versions. The sides of the box are held together without screws or glue, using a traditional Japanese craft technique similar to dovetail joints. This method will help minimize the use of metal or potentially toxic materials that would burn in the atmosphere.

The experiment will test how well wood will fare in the harsh environment of space, such as extreme temperature fluctuations, and how well it can shield electronics inside from space radiation. The latter could have useful applications back here on Earth as shielding for semiconductors in data centers. If successful, this design could significantly help solve the problem of space trash and debris falling back down.

The LingoSat wooden satellite launched into space last Tuesday and will be heading to the International Space Station. From there, it will spend six months in orbit at a height of 400km (250 mi) above the Earth. Like any other satellite, it will eventually be decommissioned and fall down but with less fanfare.
