The shopping cart, also known as a trolley or buggy, is one of the most essential tools people use inside stores, especially supermarkets, both for customers as well as store workers. Despite its importance, its design has basically remained unchanged in almost a century, even when that design doesn’t really take the comfort of users in mind. Yes, the four wheels and the spacious metal basket can hold your groceries and take them from one point to another, but they are difficult to control, heavy, and more importantly, unable to climb up or go down the stairs. This prototype tries to address those pain points to make dealing with groceries and packages easier, safer, and more accessible.
Designers: Geonwoo Park, Hyungeun Park, Wooyong Park, Dongjae Lee, Murim Kim, Seung Jae Lee (Seoul National University of Science and Technology)
Shopping carts are so iconic that they have literally become icons in digital stores that don’t have anything to do with wheeling physical objects around. Despite that popularity, they’re not exactly the easiest tools to use and offer only the bare minimum convenience so that we don’t have to carry our groceries. Considering their cheap and mass-produced designs, it’s no surprise that many have damaged wheels that make them difficult to turn. These wheels also don’t let you drive the cart up or down places that don’t have inclined planes for them to roll on.
Palletrone’s solution is to do away with those problematic wheels completely. Instead, it uses a rather large drown to lift a platform that will hold your groceries and boxes. There’s also a cage around the drone to protect humans from those powerful and dangerous propellers. Think of it like an upside-down basket with the drone inside, flying to keep the platform off the ground.
The description might sound simple, but there’s definitely a lot complicated technology involved. For one, the Palletdrone always flies at around the person’s chest height, which means that it will also ascend or descend as the person goes up or down stairs. It also doesn’t tilt so that the contents on top of it don’t slide off. Finally, it moves and turns as the person pushes or pulls it, so the experience is more or less exactly like a shopping cart minus the wheels. And it can do all this by knowing if the force being exerted is being done by a human or from the weight of the objects on top of it.
This floating and hovering “cart” sounds dreamy and very useful both for shoppers as well as personnel who have to bring goods from storage to the aisle. That said, the design is far from perfect, let alone presentable and aesthetic. For one, everyone who has ever used a drone will know how noisy they can be, especially one of this size. For another, the current Palletrone is only able to carry less than 3kg of cargo, which is significantly less than a family’s typical grocery bag. It’s a start, though, and one that finally addresses one of the biggest inconveniences when going to the supermarket by boldly giving the decades-old shopping cart a do-over.
The year, 1936. The Allied powers were facing certain defeat at the hands of a vastly more powerful and capable Germany, which had developed the Enigma Machine to send encrypted messages during the 2nd World War. Alan Turing, an English mathematician, was tasked with cracking the Enigma code to help the British decode Germany’s messages. If you’ve seen the 2014 thriller The Imitation Game, you’re familiar with how Alan Turing ended up building essentially the world’s first computer (if you haven’t seen the film I highly recommend it). The Turing Machine was the theoretical predecessor to that computer (called the Bombe), which helped the Allied powers win World War II. Turing machines theoretically describe any machine capable of processing algorithms, and while you’d expect these machines to be fairly advanced – a LEGO genius managed to build the first operational Turing Machine entirely using LEGO bricks. No no… this isn’t a sculpture or decorative model of a Turing Machine, it’s an actual device capable of ‘computing’ algorithms – and here’s the kicker – it does so without electricity.
Designer: The Bananaman
The concept behind the Turing Machine might feel like it’s pulled straight from a cryptographer’s textbook, but this model makes it strikingly tangible. The idea is simple yet profound: a machine that can compute any algorithm, as long as it’s provided with the right instructions. Turing’s original concept relied on a tape, infinitely long in theory, with symbols written on it. The LEGO version mimics this setup with a physical tape and a moveable “head” that reads, writes, and moves across the tape based on the machine’s current state. There are four possible symbols and eight possible states, which gives us 32 potential symbol-state combinations. The instructions for each combination are packed into 7 bits, taking up 224 bits overall. For context, that’s 14 bytes—a strikingly small memory footprint in the world of modern computing, yet capable of running nearly limitless programs.
What’s truly fascinating here is how the model works entirely without electricity. This is a purely mechanical construction, powered by the simplest of human inputs: turning a crank. The intricate system of gears and linkages drives the machine’s operations, enabling the head to move, read symbols, and switch states according to the instructions. Over 2,900 LEGO pieces come together to make this possible, most of which contribute to the functionality or structural integrity of the build. Each piece plays a part, whether it’s part of the working system or providing crucial support to ensure that the delicate mechanisms remain precise.
The LEGO Ideas Turing Machine is an intriguing blend of play and education. On one hand, it’s an engaging mechanical puzzle, but on the other, it’s a powerful tool for learning. By simulating Turing’s model, users can experiment with basic computational programs and see first-hand how the machine processes information. It bridges the gap between abstract computational theory and real-world interaction, offering a hands-on approach to understanding the origins of modern computing. It’s a feat of design engineering that stays true to Turing’s vision while making it approachable for a modern audience, using the universally beloved medium of LEGO.
At nearly 3,000 pieces, the LEGO Ideas Turing Machine pushes the boundaries of what’s possible within the LEGO Ideas format, but it remains entirely purposeful. The sheer complexity of the build is undeniable, but so is its elegance. The model’s mechanical design requires both precision and durability, meaning many of the pieces are dedicated to supporting the delicate balance between function and form. It’s a model that feels like an achievement both in what it does and how it does it, all while maintaining a visually compelling and structurally sound design.
For designers and tech enthusiasts alike, the LEGO Ideas Turing Machine offers a rare opportunity to dive into a physical representation of one of the most significant developments in computational history. It’s currently a fan-made build on the LEGO Ideas website – an online forum for enthusiasts to share their creations, with the entire community voting for their favorite ones. With over 3,600 votes, this particular MOC (My Own Creation) is well on its way to hitting the 10,000 vote mark, following which the entry will be reviewed by LEGO’s internal team and hopefully turned into a box set that people can buy and build. It would make a phenomenal STEM toy, wouldn’t it?! You can vote for the LEGO Ideas Turing Machine on the LEGO Ideas website here.

Apple is preparing to introduce a smart home device that blends the capabilities of an iPad, Apple TV, and HomePod. While we’ve seen hints of this over the past year, it’s clear that Apple is aiming to offer something more streamlined and familiar for those looking to automate their homes. These new devices are set to roll out in 2025 and are powered by Apple’s homeOS, an operating system specifically designed to simplify home management.
Designer: Apple
At the heart of these products is Apple’s design philosophy: simplicity, usability, and seamless integration with everyday life. For instance, one of the upcoming models will focus on essential tasks like FaceTime, controlling smart home devices, and using apps. It’s not overcomplicated or cluttered with unnecessary features—it’s practical. The goal is clear: offer consumers a device that fits easily into their routine without feeling like they’re learning a whole new system. The design reflects that, with a clean, intuitive interface that works well for families or anyone who wants to manage their home easily.
For those looking for something a bit more premium, Apple has a model that takes things a step further. This version includes a robotic arm that automatically tilts and adjusts the screen for optimal viewing, creating a hands-free experience. Whether you’re in the middle of a FaceTime call or watching something while moving around the kitchen, the device adapts without needing constant attention. This sort of design choice speaks to Apple’s focus on making technology work around the user, not the other way around. Its functional design is meant to simplify, not complicate.
Apple’s homeOS ties everything together, offering a smarter, more intuitive way to control devices. It’s a natural extension of what Apple already does with products like the iPhone and iPad, but homeOS is explicitly designed to manage smart homes. This isn’t just about setting up timers for lights or adjusting the thermostat—Apple Intelligence learns your habits, automating tasks without you even thinking about it. It adjusts based on your routine, handling everything from lighting to temperature so the home feels like it’s working for you.
Design plays a significant role here, too. For instance, one of the models will have a magnetic mount, making it easy to place wherever you need it, whether on the wall or a table. It’s simple, and that’s precisely the point. You don’t have to redesign your home to fit this device; it adapts to your space. With its adjustable screen, the premium model’s robotic arm offers even more flexibility. It’s a device that can move with you, keeping convenience and usability front and center.
Apple’s approach to smart homes feels different because they’ve always been about creating an ecosystem that works together. This new device is no exception. If you’re already using an iPhone, Mac, or Apple TV, this product will slot right into your life. You won’t need to learn a new platform or jump through hoops—it’s designed to be intuitive for anyone already familiar with Apple’s ecosystem. And for those who aren’t, it’s still easy to use.
As we move toward the 2025 launch, it’s clear that Apple is focusing on making home automation feel more natural. These new devices are not just about throwing in more features but offering a thoughtful design that blends into everyday life. Whether it’s the magnetic mount or the robotic arm, Apple’s design choices always come back to one thing: how can this make the consumer’s life easier? And that’s why their approach makes sense.

In today’s world, tech tends to run complex rather than simple, and this is where the brand ‘Nothing’ has been marking its presence, and distinguishing itself. Founded in 2020 by Carl Pei, Nothing has adopted a refreshing design philosophy that focuses on transparency, minimalism, and a seamless user experience. Nothing’s flagship products merge a distinctive aesthetic with innovative functionality, and they are a source of major inspiration for the design and tech community. Conceptual designs centered around Nothing’s approach and philosophy are currently running rampant on the internet, and we’ve curated some of our favorites. We hope to see these concepts as real tangible Nothing products someday!

One of the hardest emotions for people to deal with is shame. We are afraid to admit it, confront it, and figure out a way to live with it. The healthiest way would be to talk to someone especially professionals. But if you’re not yet ready to take that step and you’re in London until December, there’s a pretty interesting art installation that may help you have a cathartic experience with your secret shame.
Designer: Annie Frost Nicholson
The Juicy Booth is an installation at the Coal Drops Yard as part of London Design Week which lets people have a 10-minute multi-media confessional session. Created in collaboration with K67 Berlin (a company that restores historical K67 booths) and The Loss Project (a social enterprise that creates spaces for communities to deal with grief and loss), artist Annie Frost Nicholson wanted to have a space for people to release their shame and have a quick healing session through colour, light, and music.
When you enter the booth, a refurbished K67 booth, you’ll see a retro 80’s keyboard where you can type out the thing that you’re currently ashamed of. Your confession will be spelled out on an LED monitor for your eyes only of course (unless you brought someone in with you there). Based on what particular emotion you’re dealing with, the system maps it out with their “carefully conceived colour spectrum”. You then get a light and sound show that will hopefully take you on a cathartic journey.
The whole experience will take you just 10 minutes but hopefully that is enough to start you on a journey to healing. You will also get to scan and access additional resources that can support you after your Juicy Booth session. The installation will be there until December 9 so if you have the chance to visit it and have a mini-confessional session, go ahead and do it.
