Digital nomads can live and work in self-sufficient mobile home

One of the advantages of people who can work remotely (digital marketers, writers, virtual assistants, etc) is that they can work from literally anywhere. As long as there’s internet and a power source for when their devices run out of juice eventually, these digital nomads have the freedom to set up shop wherever they are and to live in things like mobile homes. We’re seeing a lot of products and concepts targeting this segment and I for one am very interested to see these come to life.

Designer: Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC)

The Mobile Catalyst, nicknamed MOCA, was developed by masteral students from IAAC. Not only is it a perfect space for those that want to work while staying anywhere with a view but it is also an experiment into sustainable and self-sufficient habitat with a digital twist. It is basically a 5.4 meter long, 2.4 meter wide, and 3.6 meter high minimalist space that gives you the basic necessities of living. Its interior is made from dowel-laminated timber produced at the IAAC itself but sustainably harvested of course.

The front part of this mobile home has the basic amenities you would need to live in it like a kitchen, toilet and shower, and electric and water systems. In the middle and the back part is the space that can be turned into an office, a meeting area, a library, a recreation room, or even a space for small events. If you need privacy or partitions and also protection from different weather conditions, there are glass doors and a water-resistant cotton fabric that slides or folds with a pulley. There are also two beds on its “mezzanine” floor and you can reach it through a movable ladder.

And of course since MOCA is designed to be sustainable, you have three light-flexible mono-crystalline solar panels on the roof and LED strips as an interior lining. The house can run on its own for around 24 hours before it needs recharging. Water is also self-sufficient as the system stores, filters, and returns the shower water into reusable water. The entire mobile home is built with digital nomads in mind so they can live, work, and play anywhere they want, as long as the trailer can move and fit in that area.

Jar blender concept brings both aesthetic and function

A lot of aspiring product designers get inspiration from existing brands whose aesthetics are very distinct. One famous brand of hair dryers and stylers has made its mark on those interested in product design (and pretty devices) and has served as a basis for concepts. We get a lot of “what if _____ made _____” concepts from aspiring designers and it’s actually pretty interesting to see what they come up with just based on the current product line of these brands.

Designers: Anika Patel, Arya Shewale, Prapti Shah, Pratyasa Samanta, Nandana B. Nair, Pia Walia

A lot of the blenders we see are more functional rather than aesthetic. But who says you can’t have both? This concept for a Jar Blender blends (pun intended) the two as you get a cylindrical form that uses chamfered surfaces to connect to the various parts. Using the industrial and minimalist aesthetic, you have what looks like one of those modern-looking gas lamps. But it is in fact designed to be a functional blender that you can use in your kitchen or even bring with you if you’re traveling.

Aside from the sleek aesthetics, you get key functional elements, at least on paper and in renders. It has things like a liquid level window, lock alignment indicator, and a power switch and in keeping with their visual inspiration, they use rounded rectangles as a key element. And if you’re the type who likes seeing the blender in action, the section around the blade is transparent so you can see how it works in blending the various ingredients you put in it (or if you’re doing a “will it blend?” kind of content). There’s also a perforated mesh at the bottom so the blender gets proper ventilation and air circulation.

The blender also comes with a cap so if you need to carry around the juice or energy shake that you blended, you don’t need a separate bottle for it. The jar is 500ml which should be enough for a drink for one person. It would be interesting to see this aesthetic jar blender come to life.

One-piece silicone measuring cup concept saves space in your kitchen

If you do a lot of cooking (by choice or by necessity), you probably have a lot of kitchen tools lying around. But not everyone has a spacious kitchen or cooking area so having instruments and accessories that are space savers can be a big blessing. We’re seeing a lot of pretty simple yet innovative solutions to small ticket kitchen items like silverware, cooking tools, accessories, etc. They might not revolutionize your kitchen but they do provide convenience (and space) which can sometimes make all the difference.

Designer: Hatice Esra SUNGUR

One such product, or at least concept, is for a measuring cup called Boi. If you cook regularly, then you’re in need of different sizes of measuring cups. But sometimes they take up space and if you have a small kitchen or storage, then that can be a problem. This concept solves that by designing a measuring cup that is just technically a one-piece silicone cup. Because of its material, it is flexible so the size can change according to what you need.

The idea for Boi is to use the flexbile material and the slider to adjust the size according to the measurement that you need for your ingredients and your recipe. The maximum capacity of the measuring cup is 250 millimeters and it is 20 centimeters long and 6 centimeters high. There are notches and labels in the cup so you know what size you need, ranging from 1 cup (250 ml), 1/3 cup (80m ml), 1/2 cup (125 ml), 1/4 cup (60 ml), and 1/8 cup (30 ml).

The renders shows the measuring cup to have an orange color but it’s easy to visualize it having other bright colors. This kind of kitchen tool will not only help you save space but can save you water and dish detergent since you’re just washing one item. It’s a pretty simple but interesting solution if you want a more space-saving and convenient tool for your cooking adventures.

Glow-in-the-dark petunias could usher in a new trend in indoor gardening

Indoor gardening and plants gained momentum around 2-3 years ago as people sought ways to cope with boredom and insanity while cooped up at home. Since then, it has become fashionable to raise greens inside homes, whether for food, aesthetics, or both. But as captivating as green living things may look during the day, their aesthetic value drops completely when you can no longer see them at night or in the dark. Of course, you could buy one of those hi-tech planters that have built-in lights, but that costs money not just for the product but also for the electricity it consumes. It would definitely be enchanting and magical if the plants could glow on their own, and that’s exactly the marvel that these glowing petunias are bringing to the table, literally.

Designer: Light Bio

There are some things that naturally glow in the dark, and, no, we’re not just talking fireflies and some iridescent rocks. Bioluminescent plants actually occur more often in nature, except they aren’t exactly the type of plants that you’d proudly display in a pot on your shelf or coffee table. But what if you could have that same magical ability on indoor plants and flowers? You’d probably be the talk of your friends and the town for as long as the plant is alive.

The Firefly Petunia is exactly that, a new and regulation-approved breed of the popular garden flower that, if you haven’t caught on yet, glows in the dark. This isn’t the first attempt to breed a bioluminescent houseplant, but it seems to be on track to being to most successful to date. Unlike previous experiments, this first mixed the genes of a glowing mushroom with a tobacco plant to great success. Of course, you wouldn’t want to grow that inside your home, so it’s a good thing that petunias are a close and, more importantly, compatible cousin.

What makes the Firefly Petunia even more special is that it requires no extra care or steps to make it glow since it’s all part of the plant’s growing process. Simply make sure that it gets enough sunlight during the day, which is something you should be doing anyway, and then watch it light up in the dark of night. The bioluminescence can even be an indicator of the plant’s health, because parts that are growing faster, like flower buds, also glow the brightest. When the plant starts to dim, it’s time to check its condition or prune dead parts.

This glow-in-the-dark flower is just the first step in the company’s grand plan, which includes making the petunias glow in more colors other than plain white. Research is also underway to extend the capabilities outside of this species, so it might only be a matter of time before we see all kinds of plants and flowers glowing in the dark, turning your home into a magical garden every night.

Top 25 Dirty Spots In Your Home You Might Be Forgetting To Clean

Cleaning and refreshing your home is commendable, but despite your diligent efforts, there are undoubtedly areas you’re overlooking in your cleaning routine. Note that cleaning can often feel unappreciated and result in overlooked areas, which harbor plenty of germs and can become a health hazard in the long run. Here are 25 commonly missed spots that are crucial to maintaining a sparkling clean home.

1. Top of Window Frame

While you might remember to clean the baseboards during your cleaning session, it’s easy to overlook the higher spots, like the tops of window frames. Grab a step ladder and wipe away the accumulated dust from the top of the window frame.

2. Sides of TV Screen

While you may recall to clean the screen itself, don’t overlook the sides of the TV screen, as these areas tend to gather the most dust.

3. Door Knobs and Handles

With just a few minutes, a quick swipe of doors and handles using a quality cleaning product will make them shine and enhance the sparkling cleanliness of your home.

4. Light Fixtures and Lamps

Over time, dust can accumulate on ceiling-mounted light fixtures, fans, and table lamps, leading to a lackluster look and hindering light transmission through the glass surfaces. Regularly cleaning these fixtures with a soft microfiber cloth is crucial.

5. Kids Toys

Young toddlers are often unaware of the world around them and tend to explore by putting everything in their mouths. Therefore, it’s crucial to regularly clean their toys. Place hard plastic toys in warm, soapy water, while soft toys can go in the washing machine. Delicate stuffed toys should be hand-washed.

6. Light Switches

Despite our frequent use of light switches throughout the day, they are often overlooked when it comes to cleaning. These high-touch areas can accumulate germs and filth if not properly maintained. It’s essential to clean them periodically, ideally every few days. Avoid using a soaking wet towel for wiping switches and go for a clean wipe or a slightly damp cloth.

7. Cleaning the Inside of Closet

Even if you frequently declutter and organize your clothes, you may overlook cleaning the inside of your closet. Remember to wipe down the bar, the top of the hangers, and any shoe organizers with a damp cloth.

8. Ceiling Molding

When cleaning the home, it’s crucial to remember to look up as well. While you may frequently clean the baseboard moldings, the ceiling moldings often go unnoticed for ages. Grab a ladder, ensure someone holds it securely, and then clean the ceiling moldings.

9. Under the Bed

It is important to vacuum beneath the bed due to the accumulation of dust, particularly if you utilize the space for storage. Remove all items and thoroughly vacuum, followed by mopping if your flooring consists of floorboards or tiles.

10. Mattress

Even though you might be washing your bed linen regularly, it’s common to neglect cleaning the mattress. It’s recommended to vacuum the mattress using an upholstery attachment. For stains, employ a damp cloth soaked in a soapy solution, then follow up with another cloth once the stain has diminished. Avoid using this method on latex or memory foam mattresses and instead refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning tips. Open the windows to let in sunlight for drying. To freshen the mattress, sprinkle baking soda on the surface and let it sit for an hour or two before a thorough vacuuming.

11. TV Remote

We often overlook the TV remote during household cleaning, despite its daily use. The main downside of a dirty remote is that germs can be transferred to other items in the home that we frequently touch. Utilize multipurpose antibacterial wipes for convenient and swift cleaning tasks like this.

12. Inside the Couch

The sides and interiors of the sofa are prime areas for crumbs, debris, and pet hair. Therefore, it’s important to vacuum your couch thoroughly at least once a month to instantly revitalize your living room.

13. Toothbrush Holder

The toothbrush holder may have gone without cleaning for some time, so rinse, scrub, and repeat until the grime disappears. Consider running it through the dishwasher to eradicate any bacteria for more effective results.

14. Top of the Refrigerator

The top of the fridge tends to gather a layer of kitchen grease and dust. Utilize a soft, damp cloth with detergent to wipe the surface clean.

15. Bathroom Shelves

Bathroom shelves often get overlooked, especially when shampoo, lotions, and soaps leak onto them in the medicine cabinet or beneath the sink. It’s essential to remove all products first, then wipe the shelves clean before putting items back in place.

16. Picture Frames

Regularly clean the glass fronts of picture frames and dust off the frames. Avoid spraying directly onto the frames to prevent liquid from potentially damaging the photo or artwork. It’s advisable to use a barely dampened glass-cleaning cloth.Top of Form

17. Area Under the Rug

Move the furniture, roll up the rug and its pad, and vacuum underneath to reveal what’s hidden and possibly inspire more frequent cleaning.

18. Inside Kitchen Drawers

Food crumbs can sneak into kitchen drawers, so it’s important to give them a good clean. Take everything out, wipe the drawers clean, and then put everything back.

19. Bookshelves

Dust shelves one section at a time, removing objects, cleaning, and then returning them while decluttering books and decor along the way.

20. Clean the Window Tracks

While it’s common to clean windows for a clear view, don’t overlook the window tracks and sills. Open the window and thoroughly clean the track and the area where the window meets the frame, using a soft bristle brush to remove debris like pine needles, dust, and bugs. Clearing out the hardware improves window operation and longevity, and for added cleanliness, consider using soap and water for extra cleaning.

21. Shower Curtain

Tackle the issue of dirty shower curtains that gather mildew, dirt, or soap scum by cleaning them in your washing machine. Include your curtains and liners along with towels, detergent, and a cup of baking soda to refresh them and remove stains effectively.

22. Trash Can

Just removing trash isn’t enough; leftover food or used products can cause bad odors. Regularly scrub and rinse your trash can, and use disinfectant to keep it clean and odor-free.

23. Baseboard

One spot that inevitably gathers dust is the baseboard, constantly in contact with shoes, furniture, and airborne particles. Regularly wiping them down can significantly contribute to a cleaner home.

24. Throw Pillow

While we often remember to clean our throw blankets by putting them in the washing machine, we tend to forget about cleaning our throw pillows, which depending on their material, can be washed in the machine or wiped down with a damp or dry cloth.

25. Fan blades

The fan blades, often overlooked, can harbor significant dust buildup, potentially exacerbating allergies if not cleaned regularly, making it important to prioritize their cleaning to maintain air quality.

It’s beneficial to include these areas in your cleaning routine, and if it becomes overwhelming to do everything at once, it’s advisable to choose one or two to tackle each time, making it more manageable.

Water filtering pitcher concept wants you to slow down while pouring a drink

When you’re thirsty or you need to drink water, you just go to your ref, bring out the pitcher, or open a water bottle and just drink. You don’t really think about things like slowing down, mindfulness, staying healthy, or resting. You just need to quench your thirst or count the glasses of water that you drink. But actually if you think about it, drinking water can definitely be connected to all of that and can be your chance to take a break from your normal routine and take a few, deep breaths while drinking.

Designers: Krishna Pranav Vaddiparthi & Ria Shah

Osoi is a concept for a water filtering pitcher for Japanese tableware and lifestyle brand Kinto. The name of the product is the Japanese word for “slow” and its goal, aside from getting you to drink clean, filtered water, is to slow down while nourishing your body. The brand is the perfect inspiration as they are an advocate of using their products to “connect to life” or just taking a break from your work or studies even as you do something mundane.

The design of the pitcher itself uses several elements that represent what it means to slow down on a functional and aesthetic level. The pastel peach gradient represents joy but is also part of the water filtering process. Meanwhile, the spout, representing the water flow, lets you pour the water ever so slowly so you’re forced to slow down and have a sense of calm. The wooden handle is supposed to “celebrate the finer details” while the few wooden parts of the pitcher gives you a more tactile experience.

The Osoi pitcher render shows three different color hues: Blissful Blue, Gray Gardens, and Patient Peach. It’s a pretty interesting ideology to put on a mere pitcher but we all need to stop and smell the roses, or at least drink the water, every once in a while.

45 square meter Ukraine apartment fuses vintage and contemporary look

One of my home-related dreams is to have a space that is completely designed and customized according to my aesthetic of the moment (which of course, changes every few years or so). And of course, I will probably have just a small space because of budget considerations and also I prefer to have something smaller so it will be easier to clean. For now, I will have to live vicariously through all these spaces I’m writing about and this one is a pretty good dream to have.

Designer: Between the Walls

Between the Walls is a modern design interior studio and one of their newest projects is for their co-founder Victoria Karieva. They designed a vintage but contemporary space for her 45 square meter apartment in Kyiv, Ukraine, incorporating her love for cats and contemporary art as well as several heirloom pieces from her family. The centerpiece of the place is the kitchen combined with the guest room which has a 150-year-old restored cabinet and a 200-year-old icon from her husband’s family.

Since the theme is vintage mixed with contemporary, you also see a mixture of flea market and modern pieces. There are 70s vintage leather chairs and flea market chairs next to a marble round table. There are other smaller touches which play into her love for art, like a handmade wool lamp by a local artist named Nicholas Moon and two paintings by Anton Sayenko. There’s also a “secret” in this space: a sauna that is hidden in a closet. The rest of the apartment uses natural materials like stone, tiles, plywood, with the bathroom using Italian Vague titles. There’s also a lot of storage space even if it’s a small area.

The way the apartment is decorated shows that even if it’s a small area, you can still have a lot of space incorporated with the various small vintage and contemporary furniture. It seems like a perfect space for a couple, with a couple of cats thrown in. As a single woman without a cat, this is something to aspire for, at least in my dreams.

The Lock Pro follows in the footsteps of the original SwitchBot Lock, which retrofitted onto deadbolt locks to turn them into smart IoT locks. The new Pro variant still transforms deadbolt locks into smart ones, but comes with a sleeker design that integrates right into your door frame, a higher torque output that unlocks and locks doors with absolute ease, and even the inclusion of a number pad and biometric sensor that lets you unlock doors with a PIN or your fingerprint. There’s a minimal amount of assembly, the Lock Pro runs on replaceable AA batteries, and it also supports the Matter IoT protocol which means the Lock Pro can seamlessly communicate with all your other smart home devices, whether they’re from Google, Apple, Amazon, or any other third party company running on the Matter protocol.

Designed with both American and European markets in mind, this retrofit smart lock integrates seamlessly into existing hardware, supporting all common deadbolt locks. Installation is a breeze, taking a mere 5 minutes – for US deadbolts, SwitchBot Lock Pro comes equipped with tailored adapters that allow for effortless cylinder changes, while European users can opt for different mounting plates based on the protrusion of their cylinder. This ingenious design eliminates the need for complex DIY modifications, making the transition to a smart lock a minimal-effort experience without any specialist tools or even requiring calling a handyman. At the core of the SwitchBot Lock Pro lies an upgraded motor that boasts an impressive 20 kgf/cm² of torque – more than double the force of its predecessor. This increased power ensures smooth operation, even with multiple locks, and faster unlocking times, providing effortless entry every time. Whether you’re a tenant, apartment resident, or a smart home enthusiast, the SwitchBot Lock Pro is a must-have addition to your connected living space.

Fingerprint Enabled

In essence, the Lock Pro builds on the sheer elegance of its predecessor, which allowed wireless locking and unlocking using Bluetooth devices like your phone or Apple Watch, or through smart home commands via the SwitchBot Hub. Retaining those existing features, the Lock Pro adds a few more for good measure, including a numeric keypad that sits on the outside, allowing residents (or any of your guests) to enter the house with a bespoke PIN code. Aside from the keypad, the SwitchBot Lock Pro sports a biometric sensor too, with a lightning-fast fingerprint recognition time of just 0.3 seconds. It can store up to 100 fingerprints and supports virtual passwords, emergency passwords, and fingerprints for enhanced security.

With up to 15 unlocking solutions available, including one-time passcodes, expiration passcodes, remote unlocking, voice unlocking, and Apple Watch unlocking, the SwitchBot Lock Pro offers a variety of usage methods that cater to pretty much all kinds of people whether they’re tech-savvy or tech-averse. Yes, you can still use your regular key, just in case you’re wondering! Support for Matter means your Lock Pro can also communicate with all your smart home devices, allowing you to remote lock/unlock your door or even set up routines (like automatically locking all doors after midnight). The Lock Pro, however, still requires the use of SwitchBot’s Hub to communicate via WiFi with other devices.

The SwitchBot Lock Pro runs on standard 4 x AA batteries, offering an impressive battery life of 6-9 months, 1.5 times longer than other retrofit smart locks. An optional SwitchBot Dual Power Pack offers an eco-friendly alternative to standard single-use batteries, with a rechargeable design and an ingenious relay power system that ensures uninterrupted use by letting you hot-swap one battery pack at a time while the Lock Pro runs solely on the second battery pack while one of them charges. Additionally, the Lock Pro features passive power supply unlocking, allowing access even if battery replacement is delayed.

Employing AES-128-CTR encryption at the software level, the Lock Pro provides robust protection against potential virtual threats. On the hardware front, the lock sports an auto-lock feature that utilizes a magnetic sensor, ensuring heightened safety and reliability by automatically securing the door based on its open/closed state, and surpassing the effectiveness of timer locks. Users can stay informed with real-time updates on lock and door statuses via their phones, and receive automatic reminders, ensuring peace of mind with every exit.

This isn’t SwitchBot’s first IoT rodeo – the company’s product roster features both standard as well as creative IoT devices like their award-winning curtain-opening robot, the button-pusher that turns regular switches into smart ones, and the Meter – a temperature and humidity sensor that lets you ensure every room in your house is at the right environment setting. The Lock Pro is a perfect addition to SwitchBot’s ecosystem, advancing their existing Lock product with newer features and more unlocking methods including keypad and fingerprint-based input. Whether you’re a family seeking convenience and security, an Airbnb host managing guest access, a fitness enthusiast with hands full of groceries, or a smart home aficionado seeking seamless integration, the SwitchBot Lock Pro offers a tailored solution. From fingerprint unlocking for family members to remote guest access for hosts, quick access for post-workout arrivals, and automated routines for smart home enthusiasts, the Lock Pro quite literally ‘unlocks’ a whole world of possibilities!

The Honeylion Tiny Home Has A Flexible Layout To Let You Host Dinner Parties

The tiny house movement has taken over the arch world, however, there is one issue that hasn’t been addressed despite its monumental success. It is a pain and often awkward to host guests in a tiny home since there isn’t much space! But Modern Tiny Living has addressed this problem with their Honeylion home and its flexible layout, and space-saving furniture. Featuring a length of 36 feet, the Honeylion is founded on a quad-axle gooseneck trailer. It has a finish of engineered wood and features a bright red steel roof.

Designer: Modern Tiny Living

As visitors and guests enter the home, they are welcomed by the kitchen which holds an oven and electric cooktop, double sink, full-sized fridge/freezer, and loads of cabinetry. As they move further into the home, they’ll find the living room which has been described as a Swiss Army Knife by the designer. It has a U-shaped seating that can accommodate six people at a time. The living room is also equipped with under-seat storage, some cabinets, and underfloor storage. This can be turned into an extra bed, so your guests can crash at your place if they don’t want to drive back home at night.

The bathroom is quite luxurious for a tiny home. It contains a composting toilet, a sink, and a spacious bath/shower. It also features a washer/dryer nearby. The Honeylion is equipped with two bedrooms – the master bedroom is in the raised part of the trailer, and can be accessed via storage-integrated steps. The bedroom has plenty of headroom to stand upright, and it features a double bed, which can be easily and efficiently stowed into the wall, creating more floor space.

The Honeylion’s second bedroom is located in the loft and can be accessed by the storage-integrated staircase as well. This is a typical loft-style house bedroom with a low ceiling, and it has space for two single beds. Check out the video for a better glimpse into the Honeylion tiny home!
