The World’s Best Tall Building 2024 Awarded To Luxury Hotel In Singapore With Themed Green Terraces

Designed by WOHA, the Pan Pacific Orchard is located in Singapore, and was recently named the Best Tall Building Worldwide for 2024. The title was bestowed by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), which is the leading authority on skyscrapers. The structure’s “hotel in nature” concept won it the award, since the design includes a lot of greenery, creating a cool ambiance in tropical Singapore. The Pan Pacific Orchard has a height of 461 feet and a rectangular form. It is equipped with 35 floors and 347 rooms. The front-facing facade showcases massive open-air terraces, which have been populated with plants and trees.

Designer: WOHA

Each terrace has its unique theme and name. The Forest Terrace on the ground floor features a lovely cascading water plaza and many trees. While, the Beach Terrace includes a beautiful oasis with a lagoon, tall palm groves, and a sandy beachfront. The Garden Terrace is farther up and accommodates the bar and lounge, as well as a lush manicured garden with planter beds and reflection pools. The Cloud Terrace is the highest and includes an events plaza, ballroom, planters, reflection pools, and a function room. The various terrace spaces ar connected with the inside of the hotel, allowing light and ventilation to touch the interiors, creating a comfortable environment in tropical Singapore.

“The project departs from conventional tower designs by carving out large open-air atria that not only reduce the building’s environmental footprint but also foster interaction between nature, the city, and its many diverse communities,” said CTBUH. “Its semi-outdoor tropical climate reduces reliance on mechanical cooling systems, while its 45 percent external to 55 percent internal surface area ratio optimizes energy efficiency. These features align with Singapore’s broader sustainability goals and reflect a global push to lower the environmental impact of dense urban environments.”

The Pan Pacific Orchard focuses heavily on greenery, nature, and vegetation. It also features solar panels, which reduces the reliance on the grid. It also has facilities for rainwater collection, and food waste is also processed on the property. The skyscraper also won CTBUH’s Best Tall Building 100 – 199 meters Category Award and the Space Within Category Award.

The Terrifier franchise, with its distinctively horrifying antagonist Art the Clown, is having a bit of a moment right now. Daft Punk’s Iconic Coachella Pyramid Stage gets turned into a 2000-piece LEGO set

Four years ago, a father-son duo won the Grand Prize in the global LEGO competition Music To Our Ears! for their LEGO rendition of the Daft Punk Pyramid Stage from Coachella 2006. Although the MOC (My Own Creation) won the award, it wasn’t selected by LEGO’s internal team to be turned into a box set. However, the duo responsible for the design are hoping to Get Lucky by submitting this entry One More Time, and they’re banking on support from Around The World to help turn this one-off piece into a set that LEGO and music enthusiasts can buy and play with!

Designer: Robotrock

Not many people knew that Daft Punk’s 2006 Coachella set would be the last time they headlined the event. When the duo took the iconic pyramid-shaped stage back in 2006, they set what’s still considered a gold standard in Coachella performances – something that even nearly 2 decades later is difficult to match. However, being the elusive robots they are, Daft Punk never really decided to pull off such a feat again, and they disbanded in 2021, after 28 years together. The Coachella Pyramid is an iconic part of music history, and Robotrock – the moniker behind the LEGO set – did full justice to it with their 2,000-brick recreation of this moment.

The set features the two artists on a colorful pyramid-shaped stage, with lights inside the pyramid glowing as the duo performed music. The two artists are perched on their platform, dressed in their robot-shaped garb, while working on the mysterious electronic console that helps them produce, remix, and perform their music.

“This project began in 2020 as a fun father-son collaboration, growing into something epic as we found ourselves needing a creative escape during lockdown,” says Robotrock. “Both huge Daft Punk fans, this build is a fusion of 2 passions. I spent my teenage years listening to Homework on my Walkman, while my son’s 1st favorite baby song was Get Lucky. It felt only natural to blend our love for Daft Punk’s music with our love for LEGO. My then 8-year-old son started with a prototype built from the bricks we had at home, and I expanded on it digitally.”

The centerpiece of the design—a rotating box of transparent bricks inside a pyramid—is powered by a motor, with a set of lights dangling inside to recreate that iconic Daft Punk Alive 2007 pyramid. This 2000-piece set was a real challenge. Lego bricks aren’t typically used to create triangular shapes, so we had to get creative in finding ways to make all those angles fit together.

LEGO builders are very meticulous, and abide by a strict code of conduct to ensure bricks aren’t used in ‘illegal’ ways to create MOCs or My Own Creations. Here, Robotrock points out that LEGO doesn’t have an official Daft Punk retail set, which means the helmets being shown in the MOC can’t be bought off the shelf. Although this would mean they’re an ‘illegal’ creation, Robotrock points out that there’s a technical legality in their design since Pharrell’s upcoming LEGO biopic, Piece By Piece, features LEGO minifigures of Daft Punk too!

The LEGO Ideas Daft Punk Coachella Pyramid is currently a submission on the LEGO Ideas forum, where fans and enthusiasts can vote for their favorite fan-made LEGO creations. With enough votes, the LEGO Ideas team reviews the design and decides whether to turn it into a retail box set or not. As a massive Daft Punk fan myself, I sincerely hope they do! You too can vote for the LEGO Ideas Daft Punk Coachella Pyramid on the LEGO Ideas website here.

RM 65-01 McLaren W1 Split-Seconds Chronograph is a true racing machine for the wrist

Richard Mille and McLaren both have in common the fire to strive for the pinnacle of innovation. Now the two brands have fused this ambition into an exquisite timepiece that signifies performance and aesthetic beauty. Meet the RM 65-01 McLaren W1 Split-Seconds Chronograph that carries both these attributes with a flair that’s worthy of a millionaire watch winder collection.

The watch is inspired by McLaren’s latest supercar, the W1 and it is the fourth timepiece created by the duo. The first one came in 2016, and the idea still seems as fresh as a teenager’s love affair. The RM 65-01 is not just about the premium feel of sporting it on your wrist, since it carries advanced features, a horologist will be proud of.

Designer: Richard Mille and McLaren

Richard Mille’s automatic winding chronograph gets the highest speed oscillation movement of 36,000 times per hour, and the ability to record the elapsed time down to one-tenth of a second. They’ve included the rapid winding system for a power reserve of 60 hours. RM 65-01 comes encased in a polished grade 5 titanium carbon case which emulates the bodywork details of the supercar such as the high waistline and anhedral doors. You will notice them at first instance, and instantly know that there is a McLaren story in there.

Going into the intricate details, the watch has an upper bezel measuring five-tenths of a millimeter thick, which technically makes it the thinnest ever from the Swiss brand. The similarities with the McLaren’s latest show stopper don’t end there as the skeletonized titanium dial and the crown are inspired by its wheel rims. Of course, the UK-based automotive company takes a lot of pride in its papaya shades, so we can see the subtle use of the hue on the watch face and the rubber strap. According to Richard Mille’s technical director for casing, this fourth watch in the series “left us with the feeling that Richard Mille and McLaren are perfectly in-tune” and we second that view.

Richard Mille is only going to sell a limited edition of 500 RM 65-01 timepieces each one having a mind-numbing price of approximately $274,000. Whether it’s a day at the track or a usual day at the office, this chronograph is the perfect match for your supercar.

Massive Pokémon leak exposes beta designs, source codes and plans for upcoming titles

Pokémon developer Game Freak has confirmed it suffered a breach as troves of internal materials pertaining to the franchise — from source codes to early and, in some cases, scrapped character designs — hit social media this weekend. In a statement published on Thursday (translated from Japanese), the company said it discovered its servers were hacked in August and that sensitive employee information had been leaked. It did not address the Pokémon leaks, though the bulk of this content appears to have been published online after the statement was released.

Leaked documents and images flooded Reddit and X after Centro Leaks began dumping it all on Saturday afternoon. The “Teraleak” files, as some fans are calling it, allegedly include source codes for past games such as Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, codenames for the Switch 2 and the upcoming Gen 10 Pokémon games — “Ounce” and “Gaia,” respectively — references to an in-development Pokémon MMO, and internal discussions from design meetings. There are also details on the purported unreleased Detective Pikachu sequel and other planned Pokémon movies, as well as a new anime series.

The scope of the leak is enormous, exposing tons of beta character designs and concept art in addition to the source codes. Neither Nintendo nor The Pokemon Company has publicly acknowledged the leak yet. Engadget has reached out for comment. Game Freak said in its statement that it’s strengthening its security and apologized to those affected by the breach, noting that the unauthorized third-party accessed the personal information of over 2,600 current and former workers.

Ditch the Socks: Discover How to Master the Sockless Shoe Trend Without the Blisters!

Happy Sunday, and welcome to Sneakers Sunday! Are you ready to discover the secrets to mastering the sockless look? Ditching socks can completely transform your style, but there are some crucial tips you need to know to avoid discomfort and keep your feet looking fresh. Let’s dive in and find out how to make this trend work for you.

Certain shoes are designed specifically for the sockless look, while others might not be as forgiving. We’ll explore specific models that fit this look and discuss when going without socks is the right move.

Fashionable Sockless Footwear Choices

When it comes to going sockless, the right shoes are essential. You want footwear that looks great, is comfortable, and won’t leave your feet blistered or sweaty. Here are some go-to models for a sockless style:

1. Loafers: Tod’s Gommino Driving Shoes

Loafers are a staple for those who want a sleek, effortless look. One of the best options for going sockless is the Tod’s Gommino Driving Shoe or Salvatore Ferragamo Parigi Driving Shoe. Known for their soft leather and signature rubber pebble outsole, they mold to your foot for a comfortable fit. The Gommino loafers offer a refined Italian style that works well for casual and more formal settings. Pair them with tailored chinos or slim jeans for a look that feels polished without being too stuffy.

2. Boat Shoes: Sperry Top-Sider Authentic Original

When you think of boat shoes, Sperry’s Top-Sider Authentic Original is the gold standard. Designed to handle the moisture of a day at sea, these shoes are made from leather and feature a non-marking rubber outsole with superior grip. Their breathable construction makes them ideal for sockless wear during warmer months. They’re perfect for a day on the water or casual weekend outings like a BBQ or beach day.

3. Low-Profile Sneakers: Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66

For a contemporary, minimalist take, Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 is a fantastic sneaker for going sockless. These sneakers are made in Japan with high-quality materials such as leather and a sleek, low-profile design. Their understated look pairs well with shorts or rolled-up pants and keeps your outfit effortlessly clean. These sneakers are breathable enough to wear comfortably without socks, making them great for casual occasions or walking around the city.

4. Casual Slip-Ons: Vans Classic Slip-On Sneakers

For a laid-back summer vibe, espadrilles are hard to beat. The Vans Classic Slip-On Sneakers offer lightweight canvas construction with a classic rope sole. They’re perfect for beach days, outdoor events, or any warm-weather situation where you want your feet to stay cool and comfortable. Since they’re made to be worn without socks, they fit naturally into a sockless wardrobe.

How to Stay Comfortable and Avoid Blisters

Skipping socks can lead to discomfort if you’re not prepared, especially when dealing with new shoes. Blisters, sweaty feet, and general discomfort are people’s main issues when going sockless. However, there are steps you can take to prevent these problems.

Break in Your Shoes: Before wearing them without socks, break in your shoes with socks for a few days. This softens the material and reduces friction that could otherwise cause blisters when you go sockless.

Use No-Show Socks: For a sockless appearance but added protection, no-show socks are a must. Brands like Bombas and Stance offer high-quality, moisture-wicking, no-show socks that give your feet a layer of protection while staying hidden. Look for options with silicone grips at the heel to keep them from slipping down inside your shoe.

Apply Foot Powder or Antiperspirant: To manage sweat and reduce friction, apply foot powder or antiperspirant to your feet before slipping into your shoes. Products like Gold Bond or Certain Dri can help absorb moisture and keep your feet dry throughout the day, preventing discomfort and blisters.

Proper Shoe Care When Going Sockless

Without socks to absorb moisture, your shoes will need extra care to stay fresh and odor-free. Here’s how to maintain your sockless footwear:

Clean Your Shoes Regularly: After each wear, wipe down the interior and exterior of leather shoes like the Tod’s Gommino loafers with a damp cloth and a mild cleaner. This removes sweat and oils that can build up and cause odor or damage. For canvas shoes like the Vans Classic Slip-On Sneakers, you can machine wash them on a gentle cycle but always let them air dry fully before wearing them again.

Rotate Your Shoes: To avoid wearing the same pair of shoes every day, rotate your footwear to give each pair a chance to air out and recover. Shoes that don’t have time to dry out can develop bacteria and odor problems, so giving them a break is key.

Use Shoe Trees: Inserting cedar shoe trees into leather shoes like the Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 helps maintain their shape and absorb excess moisture. Cedar also has natural antibacterial properties that help reduce odor.

Deodorize Your Shoes: Use foot sprays or insert deodorizing pouches to help keep your shoes smelling fresh. Products like Sof Sole Sneaker Balls can be placed inside your shoes overnight to neutralize odors and absorb moisture.

Occasions for Going Sockless

Knowing which shoes to wear is half the battle, but understanding when to go sockless is just as important. The occasion will often determine whether leaving the socks behind is a smart move.

Casual Settings: Going sockless works best in informal environments like beach outings, backyard gatherings, or casual day trips. In these laid-back situations, shoes like the Sperry Top-Siders or Vans Classic Slip-Ons fit the bill perfectly. These shoes, designed for warmer weather, help keep your feet cool and stylish without needing socks.

Semi-Formal Occasions: You can push the sockless look into more formal settings if done thoughtfully. For example, pairing Tod’s Gommino Loafers or Salvatore Ferragamo Parigi Loafers with tailored pants or a smart blazer can create a polished look that still feels relaxed. This can work in creative offices or for dinner outings where a more refined but comfortable style is called for.

Strictly Casual: Sneakers like the Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 are perfect for casual outings where comfort meets style. Think weekends in the city, brunch with friends, or walking through parks. These shoes offer the flexibility to keep things simple and sockless while maintaining a sharp aesthetic.

However, going sockless may be inappropriate in very formal environments or workplaces with a traditional dress code. Before ditching the socks, it’s essential to assess the occasion and setting.

Your Next Steps

Going sockless goes beyond a style choice – it focuses on comfort, versatility, and knowing how to make it work for different occasions. By choosing the right shoes, like the Tod’s Gommino Loafers, Sperry Top-Sider Boat Shoes, Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66, or Vans Classic Slip-On Sneakers, you can achieve a clean, effortless look that works in a variety of settings. Keep your feet comfortable with no-show socks, foot powder, and regular shoe care, and you’ll be able to rock the sockless trend with confidence.

SpaceX successfully catches Super Heavy booster after launching Starship’s fifth flight

SpaceX’s Super Heavy booster successfully returned to the pad after liftoff to be caught by the launch tower’s mechanical arms in an incredible feat Sunday morning. The milestone came during the fifth flight of the company’s Starship, and is a huge step for the rocket’s planned reusability. Starship launched at about 8:25AM ET from SpaceX’s Boca Chica, Texas Starbase.

Landing rockets is nothing new for SpaceX, which has now been reusing its Falcon 9 workhorse for several years, but the company took a completely different approach for recapturing Super Heavy. Whereas Falcon 9 typically lands on a drone ship out in the ocean, Super Heavy returned to its launch site and had to navigate into the narrow opening between the launch tower’s outstretched “chopsticks.” The move risked destroying the tower if Super Heavy didn’t pull it off correctly. It did, though, and live footage from the flight test shows the booster neatly parking itself back at the tower to thunderous cheering from everyone watching from the viewing room.

Starship, meanwhile, continued on its flight for about an hour after separating from the booster and splashed down in the Indian Ocean as planned around 9:30AM ET. The entire Starship transportation system, consisting of the Super Heavy first stage and the Starship second stage, is designed to be reusable.
