Designed by New York-based Japanese designer Nao Tamura, the Origata collection includes the Origata bench and console. They’re inspired by the intricate craft of Kimono making and were designed for the Italian furniture brand Porro. The furniture pieces are crafted from aluminum sheet material, which has been cut and assembled using techniques inspired by the art of kimono making, in which fabric is cut in straight lines, and then artfully sewn together.

This unique technique produces almost zero waste, which is why Tamura employed this clever process, since it maximizes material use, in turn boosting the production of his collection. Both the Origata bench and console feature the same essential shape – a sturdy geometric form that has a softness to it, owing to its cultural influences, and craft-related inspiration.

The beautiful pieces represent and showcase Porro and Tamura’s shared values which include cultural identity, internationality, and a genuine respect and admiration for materials. The various pieces make an excellent fit for entryways, waiting rooms, or even bedrooms. Fairphone Fairbuds TWS earbuds tout replaceable batteries, titanium drivers and microphones

Fairphone has strongly proposed the idea of a repairable and modular smartphone, and they ventured into a new product category last year with the release of Fairphone headphones dubbed Fairbuds XL. The pair of cans offered a more flexible ecosystem of individual components that give audio lovers the option to swap an outdated or broken piece of hardware. That’s in the landscape of big names like Sony, Sennheiser and Bose who don’t give this liberty.

Now the Dutch electronics manufacturer has revealed a similar option for listeners like me who prefer the compactness of a pair of true wireless earbuds. That means you are no longer forced to throw the buds in the trash can once the battery goes dead. Fairphone will also replace one of the earbuds if you are the more carefree audio listener who’s always searching for them after a couple of hours of non-listening time. The red cherry on top is the three-year warranty for complete peace of mind.

For listeners who value sound quality more than anything else, you’ll not be disappointed either. The Fairbuds come loaded with 11mm titanium-coated drivers and three microphones on each bud for superior ANC and call quality. These can seamlessly switch between two devices courtesy of Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity. Since the wooden legs won’t offer the same stability as the plastic bits, another element – the Birch plywood buttresses is added to the stool. The new Stump stool features a different design, as the patterns form a terrazzo-like design that offers the stool a textured and colored look. You can pick stools with a kaleidoscope-like finish, which provides a fresh interpretation of how recycled materials can be used to elevate a design.

9. Cork Stool Concept

Made from cork, this minimalist stool concept is designed to offer you a sustainable seating solution, that reduces waste by converting two stools into one single bench, and then back again, as and when needed. It is like an “unknown” stool design, but it features a modular nature which leaves it interestingly open to interpretation and implementation.

Why is it noteworthy?

The design has a core element of a sturdy column of cork, which functions as a single cylinder, and forms the center of the stool. However, a smaller circle connects it to the removable seat with a hole in its center. It functions as a simple system that doesn’t need any extra parts or screws.

The common key ring is really just a flattened coil of metal, the most practical shape not just for holding a bunch of keys but also for securing them in place. In order to prevent those keys from accidentally getting loose, that coil provides no gap in between and is often quite rigid, requiring you to exert a lot of force to open one end for a key to get through, which often ends up with broken nails. Conversely, there are rings that are so thin and pliable that they get easily deformed the moment you deal with thicker keys and objects.

The simple answer to this decades-old probably is apparently to change the kind of structure used. Instead of that traditional coil spring, this key ring employs a “coiled wave spring” shape instead. This kind of spring is heavily used in heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, from aerospace to automobiles. Roxon Flex multitool is customizable EDC that can be user-defined with needed attachments

We’ve seen modular furniture, tiny homes and even phones but the idea of a modular multitool is something new. This is the Roxon Flex multitool that overshadows every other EDC out there with its unique feature of being completely customizable.

The multitool is designed in a way to lock in place when not used and the independent tools can also be locked in place when being used for better precision. Could a Luxury Car Brand like Audi get into Fitness Equipment?

Luxury car brands don’t sell transportation… they sell a lifestyle, so what if you carried that idea to any other category? Designer Qingsheng Meng asked themself the same question, wondering what would happen if you took a luxury car brand like Audi’s DNA and applied it to another category, for example, exercise equipment. Sure, it sounds odd on the face of it, but Bose makes speakers and truck seats. Yamaha makes motorcycles and pianos… so why couldn’t Audi make a stationary exercise bike? After all, the company already builds electric bicycles, so the transition seems like a natural one. Meet the Audi Smart Spinning Bike, an exercise bike built with Audi’s luxury automotive DNA. After all, luxury car brands sell a lifestyle – why not a healthy one?

The Audi Smart Spinning Bike concept carries the company’s automotive aesthetic to home workout equipment. This translates to clean surfaces, chiseled forms, a forward-leaning stance that indicates speed, and a gorgeous matte black and silver colorway that adds to the bike’s appeal. “Different from traditional spinning bikes, this product intelligentizes traditional spinning bikes,” says Meng, the China-based designer responsible for the Audi Smart Spinning Bike concept. “At the same time, it uses simple styling techniques to draw lessons from Audi’s design language, emphasizing Audi’s intelligent and simple brand attributes, and is in line with the market.”

The spin-bike is different from Peloton or any of the other stationary bikes you’d otherwise see. It looks different, feels much more advanced, and comes with features that set it in a class apart. The bike sports an adjustable frame, that lets you manipulate the seat distance, height, or even handlebar heights with the simple push of a button. A dashboard gives you a comprehensive breakdown of your workout, and the energy that you put into the exercise doesn’t go to waste. It charges the e-bike as well as a detachable power bank that sits underneath the dashboard, giving you actual battery power that you can then use to charge your smartphone or other devices around the house.

The handlebars facilitate a sturdy grip while cycling, and a touchscreen LCD dashboard lets you brows through your workout stats, giving you a comprehensive breakdown of how long you cycled, how many calories you burned, your cadence, cardio, etc. The dashboard also lets you choose difficulty settings before each workout. Meanwhile, your exercise doesn’t go in vain – the muscular energy you exert during cycling gets converted into kinetic energy, which then gets stored as electrical energy in a battery pack attached to the base of the handlebars.

With the ability to hold as many as two battery packs, the Audi Smart Spinning Bike gives you impetus to exercise, also allowing you to measure your workout in a unique way. By smoothly combining thick lines and introducing a novel joint mechanism, the designer transforms ordinary lines into a tangible 3D representation of a liquor bottle. You can store not one, not two, but four different types of liquor in one bottle! How cool is that?

The transformative nature of this design extends beyond its visual appeal. Each unit comprises a pair of linear tubes, offering a unique solution for housing multiple varieties of liquor. The main upper tube, equipped with a convenient screw cap, facilitates easy pouring of the main liquor. Meanwhile, the C-shaped base tube, cleverly integrated with the joint mechanism, adds an element of versatility. By simply adjusting the position and unscrewing the cap, users can access a secondary liquor stored within the base tube.

Moreover, this bottle boasts not only innovation in form but also in material composition. Crafted from premium 304 stainless steel and featuring a food-grade inner coating, it ensures both durability and safety in beverage storage. Undoubtedly, the journey of designing this liquor bottle was not without its challenges. The development of the joint mechanism, in particular, posed a challenging obstacle. Yet, through creativity and perseverance, the designer succeeded in creating a mechanism that allows for fluid rotation of the main tube while ensuring stability and balance.

3D printed recycled wood could kickstart another design industry revolution

3D printing blasted the doors of creativity wide open by allowing almost anyone and everyone to create complex designs on demand. That market started with different kinds of plastic but soon supported other materials as well, including metal and even chocolate. The popularity of this style of design and production, however, also meant a surge in material waste, especially different kinds of non-recyclable plastics. There is a greater need for more sustainable alternatives, one that can perhaps even support a fully circular lifecycle. There is perhaps no better material that meets those requirements than wood, which is why this new 3D printed wooden partition screens and window coverings could very well represent the breakthrough that the design industry needs.

Designers have a soft spot for natural, sustainable materials and wood is perhaps one of if not the most favored one. It is easily sourced, though not quickly replenished, has unique aesthetics and textures, and can decompose safely. That said, it’s not easy to form wood into complex shapes and structures, even if you carve out the design, and the material isn’t exactly easily reusable even after being recycled. This new 3D printed wood addresses all those shortcomings, offering an almost perfect material for bringing intricate, sustainable designs to life.

This sustainable new material is itself made from wood waste blended with some natural ingredients such as lignin and cellulose. It is then reinforced using vegetable fibers like flax or hemp to give it the same durability you’d expect from wood. The result is a composition that doesn’t just look like wood but also feels like the real thing. In fact, it even smells like real wood, a trait that’s hard to reproduce on other synthetic wood alternatives.

Aectual’s material, however, does something even better than wood. After a 3D printed wooden product reaches the end of its life, it can be shredded and then reprinted into some other or the same form. This creates a truly circular lifecycle where the material is reborn again and again as long as it retains its integrity and stability. And when it can no longer be reused, it still degrades and decomposes safely just like ordinary wood.

Of course, it’s a 3D printed material, so it’s almost trivial to create structures and shapes that would be extremely difficult if not impossible with regular wood. You can have intricate repeating patterns that join together with no visible seams, or alternating shapes that are made as a whole rather than composed piece by piece. If you are impressed by its ability to climb stairs of different heights up to 8.7 inches and its versatility to handle various types such as open-riser, curved, open-riser spiral, and traditional stairs, then brace yourself. That’s not all it can do. What truly impresses me is the square design complemented by motorized omnidirectional wheels, allowing it to move laterally and achieve impeccable edge cleaning. At its base, the device is equipped with a pioneering pivotable brushing system – a first of its kind – which allows the brush to pivot 90 degrees during side-to-side movements. This feature is particularly effective for sweeping up larger debris, such as dog hair, food crumbs, or just plain old dirt that your kids drag in from outside.

My home spans 4,100 square feet. While the vacuum cleaner might not reach every area, it should be able to clean the entire house in one go. This is largely thanks to its 12000mAh battery. The Ascender’s claim that it can sweep, mop, and climb a grade slope of up to 5,380 square feet (500 square meters) on a single charge is impressive!

It’s got a sophisticated camera, a super-smart LiDAR for mapping out rooms, and six clever sensors that help it understand every little bit of your space. But the real magic? That’s in its intelligent AI that can zip through tons of calculations in no time, making it more than just a vacuum.

The Ascender app, compatible with Android and iOS devices, simplifies your cleaning routine with the Ascender vacuum. It provides a hassle-free experience by giving you complete control over the device. With the app, you can set restricted areas, schedule cleanups, and even direct the vacuum to specific spots using a virtual joystick. Its 3D mapping feature vividly displays Ascender’s real-time navigation through your home, blending convenience with interactive smart living. Moreover, Ascender is compatible with smart home ecosystems like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, allowing for easy voice commands. Lastly, the fully enclosed docking and charging station design is desirable as it keeps the vacuum cleaner out of sight. However, this could be a significant safety feature for families with small children. The enclosure is expected to reduce the noise of dust emptying by 10 dB. Furthermore, the dust bag can hold up to 60 days’ worth of cleaning, and its 3.5-liter water tank can last for up to 30 days of mopping. The Ascender’s features, including swapping dirty water for clean water, automatic dust emptying, and hot-air drying, harmoniously coexist.
