Canon’s RF 200–800mm Lens Combines Long Range With Excellent Stabilization

Last week, Canon announced a new telephoto-to-super-telephoto lens with the ability to zoom in 4x. This should let anyone take extremely accurate shots from a long distance with little noticeable blur, and it may open new doors for wildlife photographers (who, likely, would prefer to avoid disturbing any natural habitats) working without a tripod. It sounds like hand-holding a Canon EOS R-series full-frame camera equipped with one of these lenses provides comparable image clarity, which is important when you consider tripods are a drag on mobility. The lens making such photography wizardry possible is called the Canon RF200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM, and — despite its $1,899 MSRP — you’re absolutely going to want one if you plan on capturing fast-moving distant objects, like wildlife or even fast-moving athletes or vehicles.

Designer: Canon

By default, this 200mm lens has a minimum focus distance of 2.62 ft or 0.8 meters. But that can be extended out to 800mm for much clearer long-distance shots with a minimum distance of 10.83 ft or 3.3 meters. Of course, that’s if you don’t use an extender. Sticking an Extender RF2x on top of a Canon RF200-800mm doubles its focal length even further to 1600mm, potentially making it one of the best super-telephoto lenses around. That’s partially thanks to Canon’s Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), which Canon claims provides “enhanced shake reduction for up to 5.5 stops”. When paired with Coordinated IS on the Canon EOS R-Series cameras, these benefits combine for “reliable handheld performance and clearer detail in low-light situations, without having to increase the ISO or decrease the shutter speed.”

Canon’s RF200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM lens features a number of weather-proofing features which blend right into its stylish black-and-white matte design. For instance, its white paint is actually meant to work as a countermeasure against excessive heat when exposed to direct sunlight for long periods of time, as would be the case when capturing sports footage or when shooting wildlife in an area with a hot climate. The lens mount, focus/control ring, lens function buttons, and other interface pieces are rated for dust-proofing as well. Carrying it around should be a breeze; this lens only weighs 0.55 lbs, making it lightweight compared to other telephoto lenses — which usually weigh somewhere in the 1-3 lb range.

So far, reviews of the RF200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM skew overwhelmingly positive. TechRadar praised the lens for its “unbeatable reach” and “sharp detail especially at its wider end”. Even then, it sounds like the lens’ aperture could use more headroom for lower-light scenes. But that isn’t a huge deal on its own. If you buy one of these, you’re likely going to pair it with one of Canon’s EOS cameras — packed-in with in-body stabilization — and if that’s the case, this lens should be able to capture incredibly detailed photos (even in low-light situations) from afar. According to Canon, the RF200-800mm is shipping out to customers in the United States on December 14.

Find Your Therapy in Home Farming and Consuming Your Own Produce

In today’s fast-paced world, where life is often synonymous with perpetual motion, the desire to reconnect with nature and savor the fruits of one’s labor is stronger than ever. The concept of home farming, often romanticized for its therapeutic qualities and the satisfaction of producing your food, appeals to many. However, the hurdles of time and resources have long kept this dream at bay for most. But with Regrow, a groundbreaking innovation, the dream of home farming has been brought closer to reality.

Designer: Haneul kim (Designer dot)

Regrow offers a revolutionary experience for those who are intrigued by the idea of home farming but find it challenging to manage the daily responsibilities and investments it typically demands. This innovative system automatically transforms food scraps into fertile soil and showcases your bountiful crops, all while providing a rewarding, environmentally friendly hobby.

In a society where people yearn for the soothing embrace of home farming, the daily grind often obstructs their path. The daily chores of tending to plants, adjusting soil, and monitoring water levels according to the seasons can be burdensome. It’s no wonder that around 60% of those who initially embark on the journey of home farming give up, with the top two reasons being difficulty managing time and the cost of supplies.

Regrow, recognizing the unique place it occupies in the kitchen, draws inspiration from various kitchen appliances. It brings a new dimension to the concept of home farming. With Regrow, users no longer have to fret over the time constraints of home farming in their busy lives. Instead, they can efficiently care for their plants with an array of features designed for convenient operation.

gif 1

The soil used for cultivating edible plants is primarily recycled compost from food processors. The snug fit of the lid and body keeps unwanted odors from escaping, while the powerful rotation function effectively processes various food scraps. This synergy of recycling and sustainability sets Regrow apart.

Regrow is designed to be user-friendly with just five simple buttons. Users can schedule tasks via the dedicated mobile application for quick use or even operate it remotely. The glass door on the front can be easily opened for harvesting edible plants, making the whole process incredibly convenient.

One of Regrow’s unique features is its hole bottoms, which facilitate the flow of soil and compost. The compost generated by the top food processor automatically moves to the bottom through a rotary grinder. If users prefer to use water instead of compost, they can open the top lid to add water. This combination of features ensures that users can effortlessly maintain their edible plants, promoting their health and sustainability with minimal effort.

Regrow incorporates a bottom LED bar that provides users with invaluable insights into the needs of their edible plants. It changes color to indicate when watering is required, when soil adjustments are necessary when it’s time to clean food waste, or when the system is circulating. This intuitive feedback mechanism ensures that users can take timely and appropriate actions to ensure their plants thrive, enhancing the overall home farming experience.

In conclusion, Regrow offers an all-in-one solution to the common barriers of home farming, making it accessible and enjoyable for everyone. With its innovative technology, sustainable practices, and user-friendly design, it not only simplifies the process of home farming but also promotes a greener, more self-sufficient lifestyle. Regrow brings the joy and fulfillment of home farming within the reach of all, revolutionizing the way we connect with the earth and harvest the goodness it provides.

J.Laverack’s Limited-Edition Aston Martin .1R Bicycle Uses the Same Process as an Actual Aston Martin

What happens when one of the most luxurious automotive brands in the world teams up with one of the most luxurious bicycle brands in the world? That would be the J.Laverick Aston Martin .1R — the direct offspring of a fruitful partnership between the two high-flying British luxury brands, who are jointly calling it the “world’s most bespoke, advanced and meticulously engineered road bicycle”. This design is definitely bespoke, considering that no two Aston Martin .1R bikes will be created the same —and it isn’t exactly clear how many will be constructed in total — seeing as how every purchaser who orders from Aston Martin’s “multi-award-winning” online configurator will receive a personal invitation to get their own unique Aston Martin .1R fitted at Aston Martin’s HQ in Gaydon, UK.

Designer: J.Laverack x Aston Martin

Evidently, Aston Martin’s Gaydon HQ is where a new owner can individually select and install their bells and whistles (literally) after mixing and matching Aston Martin’s signature color schemes — which mirror those of the prestige British auto designer’s most popular luxury vehicles — on the tubes, lugs, forks, stem, seat post, and handlebar drops via the aforementioned configurator. For what it’s worth, yes, you can also choose between saddle and handlebar type. Right now, it’s not clear how much this will all cost, but it makes sense to expect a higher price than most other J.Laverack bicycles, which start at around $5,000.

This advanced titanium road bike design uses a mixture of 3D-printed titanium lugs and sculpted carbon fiber tubes for a lightweight yet sturdy build without any exposed bolts on the outer body. Aston Martin’s designers call this a world first, and I can’t deny it looks like a cross between a bike and a sports car. Though, calling it a “sports bike” would be redundant. That said, Aston Martin’s Executive VP and Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman, dug into this idea even further in an official press release, calling the Aston Martin .1R a “titanium hypercar on two wheels.”

Its max speed probably doesn’t equal that of a shiny new Aston Martin supercar, but it’s likely the speediest (and sturdiest) bicycle we’ve ever seen. Several elements of the ($3 million) Aston Martin Valkyrie’s engineering and design process made their way over to the .1R, including the bicycle’s 40-micron badges. The wheels themselves, plus the stem, also use similar processes. According to Aston Martin, “The hypercar’s wheel design can be glimpsed in miniature in the titanium piston caps of the brakes on the bike, while if you inspect the beautifully machined cups on the threaded bottom bracket of the .1R and you will notice parallels with the central wheel nuts on an Aston Martin Valkyrie.”

Desk and wall lamp brings mood lighting and productivity in one

When most of the world was in lockdown and working from home became the normal, the lines between rest and work became more blurred than ever. I would often find myself in bed trying to work but ending up watching k-dramas. Or when I’m supposed to be sleeping, I would still be catching up with work that I missed because I was slacking off. While things seem to be getting back to normal now, there are still lines that are sometimes a bit blurred.

Designer: Teixeira Design Studio for Gantri

Because of these blurred lines, we are seeing products now that are designed to serve dual purposes, whether it’s for productivity and/or relaxation. If you find yourself staying in bed most of the time and you need a lamp that can be both relaxing and also let you work properly, this new collaboration between Gantri and Teixeira Design Studio may be the one you’re looking for. Fold is a 3D-printed lamp that is able to cast its light downwards and upwards so it can serve as a functional lamp and for mood lighting as well.

The Fold Wall Light creates mood lighting because of its upward, diffused glow but since it also has a downward light, you can use it for times when you need to actually work and be productive. You don’t need to turn on/off or adjust anything as the design itself brings the two kinds of light together. It is also space-saving as it can be mounted on the wall or placed on a side table or a small desk. The fact that it can provide both direct light and ambient light means you can save up on having multiple lamps as well.

The lamp also has a minimalist look so it can fit into your room whatever the look you’re going for is. As a desk lamp, it looks a bit bulkier than when placed on the wall although it’s still more space-saving than most other desk lamps. I don’t know if I would really want a lamp that can be both for work and for relaxation as it defeats the purpose or at least the illusion of work-life balance.

This exoskeleton-like back support lets you lift heavy objects while keeping your back safe

If your work involves regularly carrying heavy things around, then your back is most likely one of your body parts that suffers. I don’t have a job that does that (does carrying a heavy bag every day count?) and yet I constantly feel all sorts of back aches. Well, maybe I’m just old. In any case, those who work in construction, warehouse production, and other industries where they have to carry heavy objects need to have literal support to help them manage their bones and joints.

Designer: Bebop Design

A Korean studio designed one such product for their client WIRobotics. WIBS is a wearable back support that’s created specifically for those who are involved in labor intensive industries which workers can wear while they’re doing their task or when they’re on a break. The brace was designed to not look so much like a brace but more to look like it’s part of your outfit and will not get in the way of doing your usual tasks. It also looks comfortable enough to regularly wear or at least when you need to have better support for your body.

WIBS is able to provide mechanical support to the user’s posterior, including the back and waist, two of the parts that are affected when you regularly lift heavy objects. While the materials are durable and designed to withstand pressure, they were able to use a soft design to it for the user’s comfort. There is also no need for electricity to use it so you can go around without needing to charge or change any battery. It uses tensioned flexible rubber composite as well as mechanical gears. You can adjust the strength level through an analog controller in the chest area.

This back support device can be adjusted to various sizes depending on the wearer as it has adjustable straps for the perfect fit. Think of it as a posterior brace that will not hinder movements but provide much needed support as you go about your regular tasks that involve lifting and moving heavy objects for a long period of time.

LEGO meets Mario with this retro and iconic Super Mario Piranha Plant

I am a huge fan of Legos in the sense that I like looking at the finished products, especially if they’re pop culture-related. But I basically don’t have the patience to put those elaborate sets together so I actually am not tempted to buy any of these sets (aside from the fact that they can be really expensive). But I do like seeing videos of how they’re put together or looking at pictures of what it looks like upon its final build. If you’re a Super Mario fan, this upcoming new product to add to the LEGO Super Mario sets may be of interest, or for people like me, may be of interest to read about.

Designer: LEGO

The LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant is made up of 540 pieces and when put together, you get exactly what its name says. The sharp-toothed Piranha Plant is one of the most annoying things you can get when you’re playing the game. Now you can commemorate this “villain” by putting together the LEGO set which is also camera-ready since you want to show off that you were able to finish this masterpiece.

The plant has most of the details and chracteristics that you see in the game, including spiky leaves, the polka-dot head, and the green pipe from which it grows. You even get two gold coins as well similar to the game and you can store it in the pipe. Once you finish it, it’s perfect for displaying in your desk, bookshelf, or if you’re a serious LEGO collector, add it to your display case. It’s just 9 inches in height so it won’t take up much space.

The LEGO Piranha Plant will be available this coming November and is priced at $59.99. It’s pretty affordable compared to the more elaborate hundreds or even thousands of dollar sets that LEGO has released. You can add it to other Super Mario themed sets like The Mighty Bowser and the Super Mario 64 Block.
