With time this genre of furniture took over industrial buildings, outdoors/streets, and the kitchens of restaurants. However, it broke through its industrial and utilitarian stereotypes and eventually found a place in interior design by the 1950s. Today metallic furniture can be found in many homes and offices, since it is durable, strong, and functional, and can be finished in multiple ways. Designed by Deniz Aktay, the Tablecloth side table is designed to create contrasting images of stability and fluidity. The Tablecloth has only three legs instead of four, which truly makes it stand out. It features a metallic surface which offers it a rather rigid appearance, while the curved edges create an illusion of movement.

Why is it noteworthy?

The shape of the legs is unique as well, they taper sharply to the feet, creating an image of dynamism of even imbalance in our heads. The table is shaped like a tablecloth, but it seems to be in motion rather than rest, truly creating an innovative image in front of our eyes.

What we like

  • Resembles the waves and undulating surfaces of a piece of cloth that looks like it’s falling to the ground

  • It is a conceptual design, so unsure how well it will translate into a tangible product

5. The Tila Chair

Named the Tila Chair, this innovative and unique chair design by Shepherd Studio is made using hundreds of shiny spheres and is intended to be an exploration of density. It features a one-of-a-kind form that instantly grabs attention and makes it a conversation starter.

The unique-looking chair is partially inspired by the traditional game of marbles (also called Tila), and truly the chair is built using 210 stainless steel spheres that are supported by a tubular frame.

Named the Whisk Coffee Table, this furniture design by Deniz Aktay is made of an artfully shaped and twisted metal tube which serves as the major body of the design, making it an immediate and major eye-catcher, and conversation starter.

Why is it noteworthy?

The metallic form of the coffee table is simple yet twisted, reminding you of a whisk, which is probably why Aktay named it the same. If you look closely at it, it also looks like a contorted safety pin!

What we like

8. Non-Square

Called Non-Square, this metallic furniture piece has a minimal and stainless steel aesthetic, which makes it look like an ordinary side table dressed up as a cube. As you look closely at the side table, you realize it has a deeper purpose.

Why is it noteworthy?

Designed by Hyunjun Yu, Soojin Jung, and Kyoungseo Paek, the Non-Square is a conceptual furniture design which perfectly merges side tables and stools in the form of a stainless steel hexahedron structure.

9. Strap Furniture Collection

Named the Strap furniture collection, this outdoor furniture collection is inspired by the 1970s poolside furniture. Called the Strap furniture collection, it involves 11 seating designs such as benches, stools, armchairs, loungers, and stackable chairs. They bring the 1970s charm to your backyard.

Why is it noteworthy?

The metallic chairs are made from aluminum straps, which seem to be quite tightly wound around simple tubular frames. The furniture pieces draw inspiration from the designer’s childhood memories of sun loungers around the local pool.

What we like

  • Takes you on a trip down memory lane, evoking childhood nostalgia
  • Not only limited to your backyard, can be used even in university campuses, shopping districts, and other urban spaces

What we dislike

  • The aesthetics  definitely need some work and innovation, as they are a bit dry and boring

10. 4-AL Stool

Designed by Vienna-based Paul Matteo Wesser, the 4-AL stool is designed to be a fine specimen of eco-friendly furniture. Not only does it showcase eco-friendly practices, but it also redefines how we perceive and utilize repurposed materials. It shows us how sustainable furniture can be made from repurposed elements.

Why is it noteworthy?

Wesser repurposed metal balcony cladding elements and converted them into the stool’s main structure. An aluminum profile was selected for the frame, which showcases a devotion to stability durability, and water resistance.

What we like

This Off-Grid Desert Retreat Is Eco-Conscious & The Perfect Secluded Escape

Designed by the LA-based multidisciplinary architect Malek Alqadi, the Folly Mojave is a 200-acre wilderness retreat nestled at the intersection of the Mojave National Preserve and the Joshua Tree National Park. The Folly Mojave is a stunning off-grid home that draws inspiration from the region’s earthy hues and rocky textures. The Martian-esque terrain also inspired the home, allowing it to be a bold architectural statement. The Folly Mojave is one of the latest additions to Folly’s secluded stays.

Designer: Malek Alqadi

“Folly Mojave acts as a nature-derived, divine space, welcoming guests seeking wellness, healing, and self-reflection,” says Alqadi. The property includes three standalone properties which function as suites. The suites represent the four elements of nature, and they seamlessly vanish into the landscape during the day. The Water Suite perfectly merges indoor and outdoor realms and is equipped with a lovely bed, a well-designed kitchen, a walk-in shower, a loft-like ceiling, eco-friendly solar utilities, luxurious features, as well as an open-air sky terrace, which also serves as a fully functional bedroom for those who want to watch the sky at night.

The other two suites are the Fire + Stone and Wind, and they’re designed to deliver a luxurious experience amped with stunning views through the massive windows. Each suite has a raw and rustic appeal to it, accentuated by blackened steel accents and concrete shells. Wood was charred using the Japanese technique of shou sugi ban, and it adds a lovely texture to the buildings. The choice of materials incorporates a connection between humans and nature. Solar panels in the form of trees have been placed next to each suite, to encourage energy efficiency. “Folly Mojave strives to operate as a self-sufficient microgrid, with the sun reigning as the primary energy source – truly disconnecting from external utilities,” said Alqadi.

The property also includes another outdoor structure – the Mara Pavilion. This pavilion is inspired by the Oasis of Mara, which is one of the five palm oases in Joshua Tree National Park. This building is intended for self-care and wellness activities, and it will host movie nights, sound baths, yoga classes, and other intimate gatherings. The pavilion also includes a sauna, cold plunge pool, heated pool, and steam room. Therapists will also offer myriad spa treatments from a specially curated menu.

Icon Announces Plans to 3D-Print High-End Luxurious Homes In Texas, USA

Acclaimed 3D-printed architecture firm Icon has developed its cutting-edge technology to a whole new level with its latest creation – a high-profile luxury housing development in Texas. They’ve transformed their technology into a mainstream construction method, from a niche proposition. At the start Icon only focused on low-budget dwellings, but now it is making a move to bigger and luxurious 3D-printed homes.

Called the Wimberly Springs Project, this luxurious development is located in a neighborhood of the same name. It is about 40 miles south of Austin, Texas. The project will include eight residences, and each home will contain four or five bedrooms, and will occupy almost 4,000 sq ft of floor space. The homes will be designed by Icon and Bjarke Ingels Group and will consist of four available floor plans that will be quite spacious and free-flowing.

The open homes will feature muted colors, and the renders showcase the ribbed walls that signify this is a 3D-printed project. The homes will also include floor-to-ceiling windows, quartz countertops, stainless steel appliances, and freestanding soaking tubs in the washroom.

“Located in the Wimberley Springs neighborhood, the innovative homes are three miles [4.8 km] from the Wimberley town center and minutes from hiking trails, swimming holes, wineries, golf courses, esteemed restaurants, retail, home decor, garden shops, and more,” said Icon. “The picturesque, quaint community of Wimberley is near the pecan tree-lined Cypress Creek. Whether homebuyers are seeking a serene retreat or a family-friendly community, Wimberley Springs is the ideal place to call home.”

We don’t know when the homes will be fully constructed, but the work is currently ongoing. The construction process for the project is the same as previous 3D-printed house projects we’ve seen. A massive 3D printer will print out the basic shall of each resident on-site, emitting a cement-like mixture out of a nozzle in multiple players. Human builders will then complete the roof, windows, and any other features required. The homes will be durable to high winds, and have amazing thermal performance.

MAD Connects A Massive Ephemeral Bubble To A Historic Japanese House

Acclaimed architecture studio MAD recently designed the Ephemeral Bubble – an installation that looks like a bubble being blown by a century-old wooden house! It is designed for the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale in Japan. Tucked away in the Murono Village in the Japanese countryside, the bubble is made using a PVC membrane, and is a component of the old house called China House Huayuan. The home is utilized to display Chinese art and culture.

The Ephemeral Bubble for the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale was designed to open “a dialogue with the ancient Japanese countryside”, the studio said. “This design adds a temporary, flexible space that mimics the lightness and translucence of breathing air,” they added. The large bubble is connected to the home, and it rises and expands creating a space that can be utilized for performances or ceremonies. It features a “biomorphic” design which is inspired by nature. The installation also intends to encourage spiritual exploration.

“This concept of bubbles also introduces a playful and interactive space, making the experiential installation ideal for emotive and spiritual exploration,” MAD said. “This approach emphasizes the importance of engagement in design.”

During the evenings, the inside of the bubble lights up forming a mesmerizing lantern-like effect. Visitors can look out through the blurred walls, although the colors and shapes of the outside world are hardly visible. This creates the ambiance of “soft light”. The installation also helped to upgrade the historic wooden house. It was designed in such an interesting manner that it looks as if the house created itself.

“Picture our century-old house drifting off to sleep, gently blowing bubbles as it dreams,” said architect Ma Yansong. “This fusion of virtual and tangible elements, combining the old and the new, brings new life into the ancient building,” MAD concluded.

It is designed to be a component of a larger system called the BioPermit – which is a service that utilizes the collar to test if prospective plant buyers are good caregivers. It is a speculative system, and it is designed to convert plant needs into real-time haptic feedback.

Baluchon’s Cottage-Style Tiny Home Is Designed To Be A Full-Time Residence In A Small Body

Baluchon designed a full-time towable home for one person and named it the Hytta. The Hytta tiny home is equipped with a traditional cottage-like exterior and a pretty comfy interior layout that can also accommodate a guest once in a while. Based on a double-axle trailer, the Hytta features a length of 20 feet, which is pretty common for a European tiny home. The home has a cedar finish and is accentuated by an aluminum roof.

Designer: Baluchon

As you enter the home you are welcomed by an entrance with shoe storage, as well as a massive open living area. The home needed to support remote working, and hence a compact office is placed into the side. The office includes a desk and a chair, as well as a sofa bed which can accommodate any visitors. The kitchen is the usual French-style kitchen you see in tiny homes, and it is quite basic and simple. It contains a two-burner propane-powered stove, a sink, a fridge, a microwave, and some cabinetry. The kitchen also includes a wood-burning stove for warmth, as well as a small dining table.

The opposite end of the home includes the bathroom. The bathroom is pretty small, but it is equipped with a shower, toilet, as well as a washing machine. It also has some storage. The Hytta tiny home includes two loft areas – one is above the entrance, and is quite small, serving well for storage. The other is the main bedroom and can be accessed via storage-integrated stairs. The bedroom is like most rooms found in tiny homes with a double bed, low ceiling, and some storage space.

 1. LEGO Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 Performance Set

The LEGO build was created in association with McLaren Automotive to mimic even the smallest of details to perfection.

Designed by TaeYang Lee, this LEGO Batmobile draws inspiration from the movie’s fascinating rollercoaster plot. He used Mecabricks, a LEGO modeling tool to build this amazing build. The creation is much like the on-screen Batmobile, and it is based in a dark and gloomy world, with a sinister environment. The Batmobile has a matte black color, with toughened wheel rims, and a reinforced bumper build for the kill.

4. LEGO Bentley Blower

The Bentley Blower is one of the icons of pre-war racing elegance and power, and LEGO is paying tribute to its 100th anniversary and infamous design. The LEGO Ideas Bentley Blower is designed by LEGO builder ‘N.ik.Le.go.’, and it perfectly captures the old-world charm of its powerful predecessor in a scaled-down and compact form. This LEGO MOC is made using 707 bricks, and is pretty uncomplicated compared to the other LEGO builds.

LEGO builder Brick-A-Brac celebrates Peugeot’s 9X8 and built his own LEGO build of the 9X8 supercar. Made using 1320 parts, the car measures 20 inches long. It is equipped with an extraordinary amount of detail and has all the branded graphics on its body. It has a sleek design, commendable size, and loads of attention to detail, making it a must-have gem for LEGO + car enthusiasts to have!

6. LEGO McLaren F1 Car

Meet the LEGO replica of the 2021 season Formula-1 car. It is really quite jaw-dropping and is nine times the size of the collectible LEGO version which was quite a hit. The 1:1 LEGO variant is at another level altogether and requires a lot of time and effort to be built. It took 1893 man-hours to put the 288,135 LEGO bricks together, creating a 5.7-meter-long, 2.4 meter-wide structure.

7. LEGO FedEx Iconic Truck

This LEGO FedEx iconic truck was made using LEGO bricks to celebrate FedEx’s 50th anniversary. The company has a workforce of around 500,000 employees, as well as a fleet of 700+ aircraft, and 200,000 vehicles. This incredible LEGO build pays tribute to the company.
