Self-driving pod helps mobility-impaired pedestrians cross dangerous roads

Plenty of new automotive technologies and concepts are naturally being made for the benefit of drivers and passengers, but they are supposed to also indirectly help pedestrians as well, at least in theory. With AI at the driver’s wheel, the promise of safer roads is being made, though we seem to still be far from achieving that ideal future. In the meantime, pedestrians crossing urban roads and highways are still at risk, especially the elderly, people with disabilities, and basically anyone who might not be able to cross fast enough before the light turns green again. Current solutions like footbridges are obviously not designed for these people as well, so this concept mobility device tries to take the fight to cars’ own turf by giving pedestrians their very own self-driving vehicle.

Roads are, of course, made for vehicles, and sidewalks and footbridges are for pedestrians. That said, there will always be places where these paths meet, appropriately called crosswalks, and people outside of vehicles are always at a disadvantage and at risk. Traffic lights seem to never give pedestrians enough time to cross safely, or make the presumption that everyone can walk at top speed, presuming they can walk at all. These systems are obviously not very accessible and alienate a large portion of the population, and it’s in dire need of a better and smarter solution.

Crosswalk Mobility is a concept for a cubicle on wheels that ferry people from one side of the street to another. It’s basically designed for people with mobility impairments, from the elderly to the injured. Given its enclosed design, it can also be used by parents with toddlers who are prone to suddenly running off while crossing streets. Of course, you can’t have a permanent driver for such a pod, so it naturally uses self-driving technologies to move.

What makes the concept even more interesting is that it works in conjunction with what should be a smart traffic system. In a nutshell, it communicates with traffic lights so that it can extend the red light duration until it safely reaches the other side. Ideally, traffic lights should allocate enough time for people to safely cross, but this system leaves nothing to chance.

The mobility device itself is designed to be powered using solar energy, ensuring its continued operations 24/7. Instead of regular wheels, it proposes using ball-type wheels that can turn more smoothly as needed. The boxy shape has spacious room even for people in wheelchairs and their companions, and the floor-to-ceiling glass panels increase visibility not only for drivers but also for the people inside. It’s definitely an interesting idea that will significantly increase pedestrian safety, but it unfortunately won’t work unless the traffic system on those roads is also upgraded to work with these self-driving boxes.

Designed with a multi-plug framework that lets it work with different socket types across multiple countries, the SWIFT PRO slides right into your backpack or travel bag, going everywhere you go. Momo lunar habitat is a reconfigurable compact dwelling for future Moon settlements

By 2030 we could see a rise in space tourism and most likely the human habitation of the Low Earth Orbit will trigger the shift towards living beyond Earth. Even though realizing the dream of setting foot on the red planet is some decades still to go, living on the lunar surface is not a far-fetched craving.

The challenges in colonizing planets or satellites beyond the Earth’s bounds are immense and taking them one step at a time is the key. One of the challenges is to provide a safe haven for inhabitants in inhospitable conditions. This project dubbed Momo wants to address this with a flatpack and modular option for practicality. Developed by MIT’s Department of Architecture and MIT Media Lab in association with AeroAstro, the self-assembling lunar habitat is among the best ideas so far we’ve come across.

Keeping in mind the things that could go wrong in alien environments, the Momo habitat is completely replaceable in case there is a breach or malfunction. Rather than replacing the whole habitat, the compromised module can be swapped with a new one. This saves time and ensures the inhabitants have one less thing to worry about. The ultimate goal for developing Momo will be to support the Arthemis III mission and assist in the long-term lunar settlement mission. Oen can realize the extent of the seriousness of this undertaking by the fact that MIT Departments will be headed by the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, Jhonson Space Center, Brookhaven National Laboratory and SpaceX.

For the first phase, the compact habitat will have a design that flat-packs inside the Starship HLS cargo space. It’ll be developed keeping in mind at all times about the safety and efficient space utilization. The modular aspect allows for versatile functionality, for instance, realigning the aluminum frame and high-density polyethylene membrane for setting up camp depending on the terrain of the Moon. It can be anything from a safe airlock compartment, windows, work desks, or even exercise areas.

Trashboard is a more sustainable skateboard that uses recycled aircraft carbon

To most people outside of that community, a skateboard is nothing more than a wooden plank on wheels with sometimes outrageous artwork painted on it. The probably surprising reality is that a great deal of design and engineering goes into making these skateboards to keep them aerodynamic while also light and sturdy. While it’s fine to stick to nearly perfected traditions when it comes to materials and processing, there’s also a need to push the envelope in order to design a product that will not only stand the test of time but will also help the planet last a little bit longer as well. That’s the kind of innovation that this seemingly normal sustainable skateboard brings to the market with a little help from airplane maker Airbus.

To be fair, much of a skateboard’s composition, particularly its deck, already uses sustainable materials like wood. That said, there’s also such a thing as the overuse of fresh wood, which can lead to deforestation and other related environmental consequences. While skateboards themselves can be recycled or upcycled, the use of recycled materials like recycled wood hasn’t exactly born much fruit.

Enter the Trashboard, a sustainable design that uses recycled materials that aren’t wood. Building upon an earlier project that successfully used packaging cardboard to make a surfboard, the Trashboard combines recycled and upcycled materials to make a unique deck that still feels like the genuine item. In particular, it uses upcycled carbon from discarded aeronautic components courtesy of Airbus to minimize the use of raw new materials. It also uses compressed recycled cardboard for the deck’s flex core and binds the layers together using bio-sourced epoxy resin.

From the outside, you wouldn’t even realize that the Trashboard is made differently. It still retains the same standard form that gives skateboards their smooth gliding power, and it also has rather artistic prints, though leaning more towards a monochromatic tone that gives the decks a more elegant aesthetic. All in all, Trashboard promises to deliver the same exhilarating cruising experience, while also allowing skaters to share in the responsibility of helping keep our planet alive.

How the Rolex Pepsi Turned Me into a One-Watch Guy

As someone who’s really into watches, I’ve had the chance to own and wear some pretty amazing pieces from big names like Omega, Audemars Piguet, and Rolex. Over the years, I’ve gathered quite a collection featuring everything from the sleek “Batman” GMT to the sturdy Submariner and the classic “Rootbeer” GMT with its distinctive nipple dial. But the Rolex 2018 GMT-Master II Mk1 edition, or the “Pepsi” as it’s fondly called because of its red and blue bezel, really changed the game for me. This watch turned me from a collector of many to a guy who mostly just wears this one. Well, two, if you count the practicality of an Apple Watch.

In 2007, my best friend and business partner for the past two decades, Ewdison Then, and I were bitten by the Rolex bug. We each bought the Rolex GMT-Master II with a black ceramic bezel, the reference 116710LN. This model marked a significant update in the GMT-Master II series, introducing Rolex’s Cerachrom bezel, a highly scratch-resistant and durable ceramic material. The “LN” in the reference number stands for “Lunette Noir,” French for “black bezel.” The model was lauded for its robustness, the sleek and modern aesthetic of the ceramic bezel, along with other enhancements like the improved 3186 movement and a more sturdy bracelet. Then, in a moment of madness, we sold them. Shortly after, Rolex discontinued the model, and the price skyrocketed. Let me tell you, if you ever find yourself in possession of a Rolex, remember this: buying a Rolex is like entering into a lifelong commitment, much like marriage. So, don’t sell it unless you’re ready for the heartbreak of seeing its price soar afterward!

Ewdison Then’s Rolex Batman

The Rolex GMT watch was intelligently designed in collaboration with Pan Am Airways for pilots requiring a functional and reliable timepiece to easily manage multiple time zones. This game-changing feature, introduced in the 1950s, still contributes to its enduring appeal today. The “Pepsi” model, identifiable by its distinct bi-color bezel, allows wearers to track day and night in another time zone at a glance. Additionally, there’s a fourth hand on the dial – the 24-hour hand, further enhancing its functionality. The vibrant splash of color on the bezel has become an iconic symbol in horology, adding to the watch’s overall appeal.

For me, the red and blue colors represent a balance between wealth and health, mirroring the concept of Yin and Yang. The vibrant, saturated MK1 bezel on my limited run spanning only a few months signifies wealth, passion, and power, reflecting the prestige of the Rolex brand. On the other hand, the soothing blue symbolizes health, tranquility, and stability, all critical to a balanced life. Similar to its ability to easily manage multiple time zones, the red and blue bezel embodies the pursuit of success and personal well-being, achieving perfect harmony.

It was deemed an instant classic when Rolex revealed the GMT-Master II “Pepsi” reference 126710BLRO at Baselworld in 2018. This exceptional model stood out from the crowd with its new-generation movement, the caliber 3285, and a significantly more robust mechanism ensuring an impressive power reserve of up to 70 hours. The thoughtful decision to pair this model with a five-link Jubilee bracelet, traditionally reserved for more formal, dressier models, was a respectful nod to Rolex’s rich heritage and a significant enhancement in both comfort and style.

Having accumulated over 4 million air miles and having the pleasure of visiting more than 45 countries, the practicality of the GMT function cannot be overstated. It has become invaluable for managing my life and work across various time zones. The GMT hand, which I keep set to Japan time, enables me to maintain a seamless connection with my business partner overseas. This ensures that I never miss a beat in our daily chats and collaborations, regardless of where my travels take me. From the vibrant, lively streets of Tokyo to the serene solitude of the Gobi desert or speeding down the Mulsanne Straight at Le Mans at 150 miles per hour, the Pepsi has proven itself as a dependable and trustworthy analog friend, with no need for charging.

I remember clearly that the day I added the Pepsi to my watch collection was magical. It felt like I had just ignited a rocket under my collector’s journey, blasting off into a whole new universe of style and sophistication. At that moment, I realized I had found the ultimate travel buddy who doesn’t even need a plane ticket or passport! Every glance at the watch face is like gazing through a window that opens up to a panorama of my life’s adventures. From a technical standpoint, the watch’s overall design using stainless steel and movement strikes the perfect balance of rugged masculinity, complemented by its artistic craftsmanship. With its tough and scratch-resistant two-tone Cerachrom insert, the bezel is well-engineered and a piece of wearable art that holds up against the challenges of my adventurous lifestyle. It’s a feature that stands out for its ability to endure, from the freezing weather in the Alps to the intense demands of a day at a Japanese hot spring.

The Jubilee bracelet deserves a special mention—it’s a handsome piece of jewelry in itself. Comfortable enough for daily wear yet refined enough for a black-tie event, it seamlessly integrates into my lifestyle. It makes the wearing of the Pepsi feel like an extension of myself—an essential trait for someone whose life is in constant motion. The Jubilee’s sophisticated, five-piece link design offers a level of sophistication and elegance that the more utilitarian Oyster bracelet can’t match.

The Rolex GMT 126710BLRO masterfully intertwines a tribute to its historical roots with a persistent analog heartbeat, anchoring me to reality irrespective of the spectrum of my adventures. While I appreciate the ongoing advancements in horology, this specific Pepsi timepiece, not any others out there, remains the unrivaled highlight of my collection – both past and present. It stands as a constant in a rapidly changing world, symbolizing reliability, functionality, and a profound connection to all the places and moments that have shaped my journey.

Lamp posts become EV charging stations in innovative startup concept

Having an electronic vehicle is becoming a bit more common, although still not as prevalent as we would like it to be. There are a lot of reasons why some are still hesitant about adapting to this more eco-friendly kind of cars. Aside from the price tag, charging your vehicle overnight is still not as easy especially if you don’t have a garage or driveway. You have to look for charging stations near your place but you probably won’t be able to do your charging overnight. A startup aims to solve that problem by utilizing trusty old lamposts.

Since street lamposts are pretty common, this New York City startup is proposing to retrofit these existing lamposts and use them to charge electric vehicles. They designed a shroud that will cover the lower part of the lamposts and inside you have various cables and electronic devices to juice up the cars that need them. You have retractable cables that can anchor up to eight feet off the ground and a hand level charger dock. It is also modular and can be installed in an hour and can be repaired easily.

For newbies to the EV game, charging your car here is as easy as plug and play. There’s an app where you can oversee the charging of your vehicle and it is also where you will pay for the service. You can also use it to reserve your spot in case you know the schedule when you need to recharge your vehicle and you don’t want to compete with other EV owners. Even the installation of these chargers on the lamposts is pretty easy and takes just an hour based on their initial tests.

Voltpost has finished a test with the New York City Department of Transportation and they are currently in different stages of development with other cities specifically Chicago, Detroit, and New York. This is something that will be pretty useful to encourage more people to switch to EVs, especially if they don’t have space in their houses to do their own charging. We look forward to the day when EVs are as common as hybrid or regular cars and having a more convenient way to power up is a step towards that.
