iOS 18 Developer Beta 2: iPhone Mirroring, RCS, and SharePlay Enhancements Unveiled

Apple’s iOS 18 developer beta 2 has introduced several notable features and improvements, making it an exciting update for developers and users alike. Among the highlights are iPhone Mirroring on compatible Macs, enhanced SharePlay screen sharing, a dark mode icon for the App Store, and a multi-language keyboard. I’m most excited about iPhone Mirroring, and I can’t wait to test it out in the public beta, which should be available soon.

Designer: Apple

iPhone Mirroring lets you project your iPhone screen onto your Mac, which can be incredibly useful. First, it allows you to get notifications on your Mac without unlocking your iPhone, keeping you in the loop without interrupting your workflow. Second, the drag-and-drop functionality between the iPhone and Mac makes transferring files and interacting with apps a breeze. Finally, it means you can access your iPhone apps and files on your Mac, even when your iPhone is locked or in Standby mode. This seamless integration between devices is a game-changer for productivity.

Apple iOS 18 beta 2: iPhone Mirroring

SharePlay screen sharing is another feature that stands out in iOS 18 beta 2. This update allows you to draw on and control others’ screens during shared sessions, making remote assistance and collaboration much more effective. Whether you’re troubleshooting an issue, working on a project together, or teaching someone how to use an app, SharePlay makes it easy to interact and communicate in real-time.

The App Store has also received a visual update with a new dark mode icon. This change aligns with the system-wide dark mode, reducing eye strain, especially in low-light environments. It’s a small yet thoughtful update that enhances the overall user experience.

The multi-language keyboard is another fantastic addition. It now supports up to three languages simultaneously, including 27 Indian languages like Hindi, Assamese, Bangla, and Urdu. This update is perfect for multilingual users, making it easier to switch between languages without changing settings. It’s a step toward making iOS devices more accessible and user-friendly for a diverse global audience.

Finally, iOS 18 beta 2 introduces Rich Communication Services (RCS) support in the Messages app. RCS brings features like read receipts, typing indicators, and higher-quality media sharing to your messages, offering a more interactive and engaging messaging experience.

Additionally, the second beta includes some smaller tweaks and interface changes. The Home Screen now features a wallpaper tinting toggle and improved contrast for certain icons. There’s also a new Connected Card Wallet widget, although it’s not functional yet, and enhancements to the Passwords app with a more accessible “+” button for adding new items. The Control Center’s power button now has a more pronounced haptic feel, preventing accidental activation.

Things to Keep in Mind Before Downloading

When testing out the iOS 18 public beta, it’s essential to proceed with caution. Developer betas are designed for testing and may contain bugs that could cause unexpected crashes or issues with certain apps. Before downloading, make sure to back up your device to avoid any potential data loss. If you prefer a more stable experience, consider signing up for the public beta, which is expected to be released later in the month or in July.

Urban commuting just got a significant upgrade with the release of the WALKCAR 2 and WALKCAR 2 Pro. Launched on April 1, 2024, these innovative personal mobility vehicles captivate tech enthusiasts and city dwellers, and they’ve won me over too. Hailing from Japan, these ultra-compact devices are set to change how we move through our cities. Imagine gliding effortlessly through crowded streets, bypassing traffic, and reaching your destination without breaking a sweat. These sleek, portable vehicles fit seamlessly into your daily routine, offering convenience and efficiency. Perfect for commuting to work or exploring new neighborhoods, the WALKCAR 2 turns every journey into a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Designer: cocoa motors. Co., Ltd.

A Portable Marvel: Design and Portability

The WALKCAR 2 series is impressively portable. The device offers remarkable convenience, weighing roughly 6.4 lb (2.9 kg) and comparable in size to a 15-inch laptop. Available in four stylish colors—Sonic Yellow, Celeste Blue, Sand Beige, and Sumi—these vehicles are as aesthetically pleasing as they are functional. This combination of portability and style ensures that the WALKCAR 2 fits seamlessly into both professional and casual settings, making it a versatile choice for a wide range of users.

The design and build quality of the WALKCAR 2 are equally remarkable. The ultra-light carbon body, specifically using carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic (CFRTP), provides a robust yet lightweight frame. This material is ten times stronger than steel and significantly lighter, ensuring durability and ease of transport. The high elasticity of the carbon frame provides excellent road grip, contributing to a smooth and stable ride even on challenging terrains. The compact size allows it to fit easily into a backpack or a large handbag, making it an ideal everyday carry item. Whether heading to work, running errands, or exploring a new city, the WALKCAR 2 can be your constant companion, ready to provide quick and efficient transportation whenever needed.

Performance and Advanced Motor Technology

Performance is where the WALKCAR 2 series truly shines. The WALKCAR 2 reaches a maximum speed of 6.2 mph and boasts a cruising distance of 4.35 miles. For those needing more power and range, the WALKCAR 2 Pro offers a top speed of 9.3 mph and a 5-mile range. Both models feature a four-wheel independent suspension system that absorbs vibrations in all directions, ensuring a comfortable ride even on uneven surfaces. This suspension system improves comfort and enhances the vehicle’s stability, making it suitable for novice and experienced riders.

One notable feature is the world’s most miniature in-wheel motor, developed exclusively for WALKCAR. Housed within the front drive wheel, this motor provides the torque performance of a bicycle, allowing the device to climb slopes up to 12 degrees for the Pro model. The use of welded connections instead of screws maximizes coil space, enhancing efficiency and power. Additionally, the newly adopted ultra-super duralumin heat sink improves heat dissipation, maintaining performance during extended use. This combination of advanced motor technology and efficient heat management ensures that the WALKCAR 2 delivers consistently high performance, even under demanding conditions.

User-Friendly Operation and Charging Convenience

Operating the WALKCAR 2 is as intuitive as walking. To accelerate, press the toes of both feet. Deceleration and stopping are achieved by raising one toe slightly. Turning is managed by shifting your weight, allowing precise control and easy maneuverability. This intuitive control scheme ensures that even new users can quickly adapt to the device, making it accessible to a wide range of people, including those who may not have previous experience with personal mobility devices.

Charging the WALKCAR 2 is both quick and convenient. With the included quick charger, the battery reaches 80% capacity in just 30 minutes, making it ideal for short breaks during the day. A full charge takes only 60 minutes, ensuring minimal downtime. This feature mainly benefits urban commuters needing a reliable and ready-to-go mobility solution. The ability to charge quickly and efficiently means that users can rely on the WALKCAR 2 for their daily transportation needs without worrying about long charging times.

Real-World Applications and Daily Commutes

The practical applications of the WALKCAR 2 are vast. For frequent travelers to Japan, like myself, who visit once or twice a month, this device is a game-changer. In a country where walking and public transportation are the norms, the WALKCAR 2 provides a seamless way to cover the distance between subway stations and destinations. On my visits, I often struggle to keep up with my friends, who are more accustomed to extensive walking. The WALKCAR 2 would allow me to maintain their pace effortlessly, ensuring I don’t miss a beat in this bustling metropolis.

Imagine navigating through the narrow streets of Tokyo or reaching a distant café without breaking a sweat. The WALKCAR 2 brings convenience and efficiency to these everyday scenarios. It allows users to explore more remote areas, visit favorite shops, or enjoy parks that are otherwise too far to reach on foot. By extending the practical radius of our daily lives, the WALKCAR 2 enriches our experiences and opens up new possibilities for urban living.

For city dwellers, the WALKCAR 2 could revolutionize daily commutes. Instead of being confined to locations close to subway stations, users can live in more spacious homes further afield, knowing they can easily travel the last mile. This flexibility enhances living conditions and reduces the stress associated with crowded public transportation. The ability to quickly and efficiently cover the distance from home to public transport hubs means that users can enjoy the best of both worlds: a more comfortable living environment and easy access to the city’s amenities.

A Worthwhile Investment

Priced at $999 for the WALKCAR 2 and $1,499 for the Pro version, these devices represent a significant investment. However, the cost is justified considering the advanced technology, build quality, and the convenience they offer. The WALKCAR 2 series is sold out, reflecting its popularity and the high demand for such innovative mobility solutions. Preorders are being accepted for the next production run, allowing eager customers to secure their units. The high demand for these devices highlights their appeal and the value they offer to users seeking a modern and efficient mode of transportation.

The WALKCAR 2 and WALKCAR 2 Pro are more than just gadgets; they are transformative tools that enhance urban mobility. With their compact size, robust performance, and user-friendly operation, they promise to change how we move through cities. For frequent travelers, urban commuters, and anyone looking to expand their mobility options, the WALKCAR 2 series is an invaluable addition to daily life. As we seek ways to navigate our urban landscapes more efficiently, the WALKCAR 2 paves the way for innovation and practicality. Its ability to provide a reliable and convenient mode of transport in various urban settings makes it an essential tool for modern urban living.

Music analysis device lets you learn songs by ear more conveniently

Those who are trying to learn how to play their favorite songs on their musical instruments have it a little easier now. They can just search for chords and arrangements or if they’re lucky, there might even be YouTube tutorials out there. But there are still those who prefer to play it by ear while playing the piano, guitar, or other instruments but playing the song from their phone or computer while learning is a bit of a hassle.

Designer: Hélène Bert

Analist is a tool that can be used by those trying to learn songs by playing it by ear. Unlike phones and computers where controls and precision are a bit hard, this gadget allows you to optimize your workflow when trying to play your instrument as you listen to the song you’re trying to learn. You will be able to control things pause and play, speed, repetition, and other things you may need to adjust while you’re playing it by ear.

Based on the product renders, this is how it works. You add a song onto the device, edit the parts that you need to learn if needed, and then save it. You can adjust it according to your preference (speed, pitch, equalizer, volume, etc). You hold it in one hand while playing the song on it and playing your instrument on the other. The device has easy to access controls that lets you pause and play, speed up or slow down, volume up and down, etc. You also get to play it in loop so you can master the song.

You can even do more if you connect it to the app, although what this “more” is wasn’t really specified. You might be forgiven for mistaking the Analist for your aircon’s remote control but on paper, the functionality of the device will be pretty helpful for those who are learning to play songs.

How Bluetooth Works: Exploring the Invisible Symphony of Wireless Communication

Wireless connectivity has become an invisible thread woven into the fabric of our daily lives. From streaming music to our earbuds to connecting keyboards and printers, Bluetooth technology has replaced a tangle of wires with seamless, invisible magic. Sure, we all lamented the day Apple killed the headphone jack (it’s been 8 long years since that day), but try and imagine a life without Bluetooth. Wires wires everywhere, data cables to transfer files between machines, and requiring to load all your songs on USB drives to play on your car stereo or home theater. Sounds like a pretty awful life, doesn’t it?? But how exactly does this magical thing called Bluetooth work? Let’s take a closer look at the fascinating world of wireless Bluetooth communication and explore the science behind its seemingly effortless operation.

Bluetooth’s roots trace back to 1994, when Ericsson’s Jaap Haartsen aimed to create a short-range wireless connection for mobile phones, booming in popularity at the time. This technology, using low-power UHF radio waves, would eliminate the need for bulky cables. The name, inspired by 10th-century Viking king Harald Bluetooth, aimed to reflect how the technology would unite devices like those once-warring kingdoms. The Bluetooth Special Interest Group, formed in 1998 by Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Nokia, and Toshiba, ensured standardization and widespread adoption.

Bluetooth utilizes radio waves for communication, but unlike the visible light we perceive, it operates on a specific and invisible range of the electromagnetic spectrum. This range falls between 121mm and 124mm in wavelength, significantly longer than the radio waves used for Wi-Fi. This longer wavelength allows Bluetooth signals to pass through walls, making it suitable for short-range data transfer within a room or a few meters.

The magic of transforming these radio waves into music or data streams lies in a clever manipulation of their properties. Bluetooth transmits information by altering the radio waves themselves. To send a binary 1, the Bluetooth antenna emits a specific radio wave with a particular wavelength. Conversely, to send a 0, it transmits a different wavelength within the designated range. This seemingly simple approach allows for incredibly rapid data transmission. In fact, Bluetooth can send and receive information at a million times per second, ensuring smooth audio streaming or data transfer without any noticeable lag.

But with so many Bluetooth devices around us, how do our earbuds differentiate between our phone’s signal and everyone else’s in a crowded space? This is where Bluetooth’s genius truly shines. It doesn’t rely on a single channel for communication. Within the designated wavelength range, there are actually 79 individual channels available. To avoid interference and ensure smooth communication, Bluetooth devices constantly hop between these channels at a staggering rate of 1,600 times per second. Imagine a crowded room filled with people having multiple conversations simultaneously, each conversation happening on a different frequency – that’s the essence of how Bluetooth avoids interference and ensures clear communication even in environments saturated with Bluetooth signals.

An additional layer of security is implemented through a process called pairing. When you connect your phone to your earbuds for the first time, they exchange a unique encryption key. This key acts like a secret handshake between the two devices. Only the phone’s signal with the matching encryption key can be decrypted by your earbuds. Even if someone intercepts the data stream being transmitted via Bluetooth, they wouldn’t be able to decipher it without the specific key, protecting the privacy of your communication.

But what if multiple devices in close proximity try to use the same channel at the same time? This is where Bluetooth prioritizes established connections. Your earbuds will recognize your phone’s unique encryption key and prioritize its signal, effectively filtering out unwanted audio or data from nearby devices attempting to connect. This ensures a clear and uninterrupted connection, even in crowded environments.

Beyond music streaming and connecting peripherals, Bluetooth continues to evolve and expand its capabilities. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is a newer iteration of the technology specifically designed for internet-of-things (IoT) applications. BLE offers lower power consumption compared to traditional Bluetooth, making it ideal for battery-powered devices like smartwatches and fitness trackers. Additionally, advancements in Bluetooth technology have led to the development of Bluetooth mesh networks, which enable a network of devices to communicate with each other, opening doors for innovative applications in smart homes and industrial automation.

So next time you lose yourself in music with your wireless earbuds, take a moment to appreciate the invisible symphony of radio waves, hopping frequencies, and clever encryption that keeps the magic of Bluetooth alive. It’s truly a marvel of science and a major pat on the back for the engineers who have harnessed the invisible forces of the electromagnetic spectrum and transformed them into a ubiquitous technology that shapes the way we interact with our devices and the world around us. After all, we wouldn’t want to be stuck in the dark ages of the 2000s with infrared-based data-transfer capabilities… do you remember those times?!

AI-based LEGO printer turns any subject into replicated pixel art

Just when everyone is leveraging the power of artificial intelligence (AI), why should avid LEGO fans not dig a share in the pie? Dutch creator, YouTuber, and master brick builder Sten, thought of the obvious and set out to harness the power of AI and built a printing machine entirely from LEGOs that can print any subject into identical pixel art.
The entire building process, along with a demo pixel art made from LEGO pieces, has been documented by Sten on his YouTube channel, Creative Mindstorms. The Pixelbot 3000, as the LEGO printer is called, Sten informs, is ‘capable of creating pixel art of anything using AI.’

Designer: Creative Mindstorms

The Pixelbot 3000 is programmed in Python using help from DALL-E from OpenAI. Sten has managed to program, and create software-hardware integration, in such a manner that you simply ‘type a subject line, hit start’ and the printer takes on from there.

Sten informs, in the video, that he started with inspiration from LEGO printers such as Briccasso, but over time had to improvise a great deal – both with the code customization and the machine functionality – to achieve what he set out to build. He initially used 16 x 16 base plates to print the developed pixel art, but it was later changed to a 32 x 32 grid for better result output.

The basic operation of Sten’s LEGO machine is similar to that of a pick-and-place machine, which has been precisely programmed and created to place large-size LEGO pieces with surprising accuracy on the 32 x 32 grid base plate. Moreover, the machine is designed to pick colors – according to the picture’s demand – and place brick-by-brick to achieve the identical pixel art of an AI image generated. Since LEGO brick colors are limited, Creative Mindstorms reduced its machine’s color palette to 15 base colors including a white background.

The machine does not at any point rely on designing the art or scanning it. It instead uses AI to generate pixel art (using LEGOs) of the image generated in the software. The user can preview the generated image, crop and color grade it, before saving it for printing. When commanded for print, the image is divided into 32 x 32 grid, color and center of each pixel on the base plate is sampled, and the pixel art is then built piece by piece. In the testing, Sten asked AI to create a ‘quirky robot holding a sunflower,’ you can check out how it came out in the video above.

Zen-like music player concept is inspired by vinyl design and ancient Chinese poetry

Vinyl players are having a resurgence as the younger generation has discovered the joys of listening to analog music. There are also some music players and even gadgets that have adapted the vinyl player aesthetic even though they don’t actually play LPs. It’s all about the nostalgic vibes that come with it since it seems we’re all about reliving the “classic” days even for those who were not even alive at that time.

Designers: Ziqiang He, Hao Zhang, Yunan Lin, Sihong Chen, and Yue Gao

The Musipple music player is one such device but it adds another dimension to its design: ancient Chinese poetry. Its inspiration is from a poem written by Wei Yingwu during the Tang Dynasty. Basically the idea is that trees create ripples when they touch the water and the birds on these trees are singing. So adapting both the idea of the poem and the vinyl player aesthetic, we get a unique looking Bluetooth music player that brings together Chinese culture and modern technology.

The music player has ripples in the center with a pole on the side. To turn on the player, you need to place the pole into the center of the ripples just like you would a vinyl player. In this case however, it’s a Bluetooth music player rather than an actual vinyl. There are controls for volume and bass on the side which lets you turn a dial to adjust, adding to the analog aspect of this digital player.

It would have been nicer if it was an actual vinyl player though, rather than just a music player since as mentioned, this kind of nostalgic devices are making a comeback. If it becomes a commercial product, it would be interesting to see if there’s a market for such faux vinyl players.

Strategically placed along the edges, the speakers direct audio towards the user, providing an immersive sound experience. Despite the powerful audio components, the tablet’s design remains clean and uncluttered, with the speakers seamlessly integrated into its body.

In addition to its built-in speakers, the Tab Plus can transform into a Bluetooth speaker, allowing you to stream audio from your smartphone or other portable devices.
