1. Pony Project

Called the Pony Project, this portable CD player concept with a built-in speaker takes inspiration from two amazing brands – Sony and Teenage Engineering. The conceptual audio design has the design DNA and color theme of Teenage Engineering. It features a digital display that showcases the music it is currently playing, and library elements to look for different tricks. In fact, even the tactile input for the L-Shift, R-Shift, Mic, Start, and Select is inspired by the Teenage Engineering aesthetics.

Why is it noteworthy?

The top of the Pony Project is equipped with volume rockers, bass, and treble, as well as power and stop buttons. The audio player also features the ‘Pony’ branding which seems to be an interesting dupe of the Sony brand name. Teenage Engineering’s popular color theme was also borrowed for the design.

What we like

  • Gives a refreshing and fun makeover to DAPs
  • Merges Sony & TE design language

What we dislike

  • It is a conceptual design, so not sure how well it will translate into a real product

What we like

  • Equipped with a thin body, which doesn’t impact the audio quality at all

  • The Black Wheel features an old-fashioned charm which may not be liked by those with modern looks

4. TakeOut

Called TakeOut, this LG-inspired concept is a modular speaker system that allows you to build your own audio space. It features a 360-degree soundbar which brings the sound to you no matter where you are standing or sitting in the room. The soundbar blasts music in all directions.

Why is it noteworthy?

If you push one of the circles on the soundbar, a short cylindrical wireless speaker is released. This speaker works in cohesion with the soundbar, and you can take it anywhere in the house with you! It has a compact and portable design.

What we like

  • You can build a surround sound setup by placing the four “sub-speakers” around the room

What we dislike

  • Unsure if the individual speakers can be used separately from the soundbar, or if they’re completely dependent on them

5. Battery-Free Amplifying iSpeakers

Dubbed the Battery-Free Amplifying Speakers – this iPhone speaker is portable and battery-free. It is a refreshing new version of the typical no-power smartphone speaker. The speaker is built from metal, and this makes the product more functional and valuable, unlike conventional speaker designs on the market.

Why is it noteworthy?

NanoBrick’s E-Skin Anycolor is a low-energy color display set to revolutionize electronic paper

Why do e-ink displays have to look the same old boring in grayscale hues? Can’t they come in other monochrome color options? NanoBrick has taken this challenge up and designed the E-Skin Anycolor which is based on their EDP technology. This innovation lets the user have the flexibility to get an E-Paper in any hue with the option of having a customizable size or form factor.

If the thought of a rollable or bendable display came up in your mind, you’re not alone. The next revolutionary piece of display technology destined to end up as a common man’s perk in a few years, could very well have a more budget-friendly option. That’s where the E-Skin Anycolor comes into play, especially in times when people are willing to take up the option of a minimalist phone. This peppy E-Ink display has a very low power consumption and can even work with NFC signals which is a big advantage for power-hungry gadgets.

Going minimalistic with your digital world makes sense but if you get frustrated with the grayscale colors of the device it’ll only end up in more anxiety. That’s where the innovative tech comes into play thanks to its flexibility. It is much easier to mass manufacture than e-ink displays with a more complex production process. You can create them for large-scale displays, small gadgets, or high-efficiency minimalistic watches. Maintaining a good brightness level with less glare, even on the sunniest of days is also an advantage.

Nanobrick doesn’t want to stick to contemporary applications and wants the E-Skin Anycolor to turn any surface into a personalized canvas for display. For example, a personalized laptop cover, low-energy signboard, or office walls with live frames. The dynamic color transformation is achieved courtesy of the single nano-particles in the color dyes that are manipulated by applying small currents. The company wants to expand the usage of this new-age electronic paper to other applications as well with the IP-protected ingress.

There’s no word on the first expected consumer electronic or business application that’ll have the E-Skin Anycolor at its helm, but it surely will make similar display technologies obsolete.

Gudetama 35mm camera lets you embrace basic analog photography

Gudetama is one of my favorite Sanrio characters as I find that I relate a lot to it even though it’s an anthropomorphic egg yolk. I’ve watched its “Eggcelent Adventures” on Netflix and I also collect various stationary stuff featuring this lazy ennui-filled cute egg. I’m not alone in this obsession as the character has 852,000 followers on Instagram and has probably sold a lot of Sanrio merch as well.

Designer: Retrospekt for Sanrio

Another Gen Z thing that has been trending lately is a throwback to 35mm digital cameras. And no one does retro tech products better than Retrospekt. Their latest collaboration with Sanrio is the limited edition Gudetama Restrospekt FC-11 35mm Film Camera which has the egg yolk character on center stage, or rather, center camera. The camera has a silicone lens cap and the body has faux leather artwork with the different Gudetama versions.

It is a pretty simple point-and-shoot camera with a 1m fixed-focus lens and built-in optional flash. All you have to do is look through the viewfinder, line up your shot, press the shutter button, and then get your 35mm film developed in your favorite film developing shop. It’s just like any other 35mm film camera except you have the Gudetama butt staring at you when you look into the viewfinder.

The camera has a 200-400 ISO with a 31mm f/9 lens and 1/120 second shutter speed. It’s pretty light as it only weighs 122g and may even be lighter than your smartphone. It’s pretty cute that kids these days are enjoying taking analog photos and having cute cameras like this one adds to the appeal.

My iPad has almost reached necessity status in my life, I’m pretty sure all of us tablet owners are super reliant on them (I mean, I am for sure)! Designed by Scott Yu-Jan, this interesting DIY project is inspired by the Mac mini. It gives a home for an iPad mini and hides the Mac Studio in plain sight. Called the Macintosh Studio, the enclosure is placed on top of and hugs the Mac Studio, only the buttons are left unrestricted. The front of the device features a slot for the iPad mini to slide in and connect to the Mac Mini using a single UBC-C cable. This allows the iPad mini to be charged always, keeping it ready to go whenever you need, it while also allowing it to serve as a second screen for the Mac Studio.

3. Pro Stylus 2

Meet ZAGG’s Pro Stylus 2, which is designed to work with the iPad as well as the iPhone. The Pro Stylus 2 will feel super familiar and comfortable in your hand owing to its slim design. It features a precise fine tip that supports accurate drawing, as well as palm rejection to prevent your hand from accidentally touching or tapping the screen as you sketch or write. Samsung Color E-Paper display could open the doors to new product designs

Samsung is a tech giant with its hands in many industries, but one of its biggest businesses is in making displays. These cover anything from TVs to laptops to smartphones to signage, supporting a variety of display technologies like LCD, LED, and everything in between. One kind of technology it has barely touched, however, is Electronic Paper Displays or EPDs, the same kind of eye-friendly, battery-efficient screens found on eBook readers. That is changing now, however, with Samsung dipping its toes into this market with a new Color E-Paper display that’s currently aimed at indoor signage and posters but could also be extended to new types of devices in the very new future.

E Ink signage is becoming more common these days, especially as these electronic paper displays start to show improvements in color rendering. It’s not hard to see the benefits of the technology for this particular use case, since EPDs don’t use power to retain their image and use very little power when changing what’s on display. Although it is hardly the first of its kind, even for the tech giant, Samsung’s presence in this growing market is pretty much a stamp of approval from a brand that sells large TVs and screens for the same purpose of advertising in indoor signage.

The new Samsung Color E-Paper display seems to be really pushing the boundaries of the technology. The 32-inch has a QHD resolution of 2560×1440, though its real boasting feature is the 60,000-color gamut (six per pixel) which is quite high for a color electronic paper. This is thanks to the new E Ink Spectra 6 panel, the very same that flaunted artistic designs and images on the ASUS ROG Project DALI at Computex 2024 last week. This laptop concept utilizes a smaller panel that acts as a canvas for owners to customize the design of the laptop cover as they desire.

While the gigantic size of the Samsung Color E-Paper limits it to applications like signs and posters, it does make one wonder if Samsung will stop there. Its collaboration with E Ink could, in fact, lead to more devices with smaller screens, particularly in the eReader market that Samsung has never ventured into before. And with its close ties with Wacom, it could even add stylus support for these devices, potentially putting the likes of the Amazon Kindle and Kobo on notice.
