I don’t know about you, but I remember the exact moment I knew that Mario was going to become a successful gaming franchise. The year, probably sometime in the 90s, the device, a borrowed Nintendo Game Boy Advance, and the game, Yoshi’s Island. The creation of Super Mario World, or the entire world around the famous princess-saving plumber was a pivotal moment for the game, turning it from a small success story to a full-fledged ecosystem. Celebrating that very journey, LEGO just unveiled images of its Mario and Yoshi set. Priced at $129.99, it offers a unique blend of classic video game nostalgia with the engaging and creative play that LEGO is known for. In the unrecorded race for perfecting the foldable smartphones, and even tablets – in some distinct parts of the world, – Samsung is taking a leap of faith. The South Korean tech company, if the leaked patent filing is to be believed, is planning a flexible display tablet, which would be capable of expanding in either direction, on the same plane, giving the user the freedom to control the size of the display at will.

Imagine you are in the middle of searching the mysteries of Mariana Trench and suddenly the tablet buzzes with a notification, your friend’s ready to take you on a game of chess. From a usual-size tablet, you pull the device’s shell and expand the screen in both directions and place your pieces on a digital perspective not fathomed before. Knock-knock, back to reality! Samsung only has a patent application filed for such a tablet.

Samsung has filed a patent application for a new tablet with an expandable display on the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) website. Such a display device should “solve the issues” that users generally face with foldable smartphones that compel one to choose between a larger display or a smaller one when folded. The tablet – with a shell capable of expanding – Samsung would give the user convenience to pick their size according to the need of the application they are interacting with.

According to the patent drawing shared by Patently Apple, the display mechanism of such a tablet has been vividly explained. The device will include a flexible screen arranged in its shell, so when the user needs, the exposed display screen on the outside can be expanded and shrunk on the same plane, effortlessly increasing or decreasing the size on both sides or independently on either side (later made possible with a diagonal mechanism used, according to the patent).

Of course, the applications of such a tablet-like device featuring a flexible screen with adjustable size is manifold. Samsung has been at the forefront of mobile display technology and it’s evident from those used in its fold and flip series. We can back Samsung to pull off a screen like this, but for now, it’s only in a patent and no one knows if and when Samsung will reveal the new form factor for a tablet.

Headphones concept reimagines comfort with clear silicone headbands

Even with the popularity and ubiquity of wireless earbuds, many audiophiles and gamers still have a soft spot for over-ear headphones. Despite their bulkiness, they still promise better noise isolation and fuller sounds, which is to be expected given their size. They are also expected to be less comfortable to wear over longer periods of time, despite many attempts at using different materials and even designs. This concept design for an aptly named “Comfortably Headphones” takes another stab at that problem, but its solution is more ambitious and, if we’re being honest, less practical. Then again, having a flexible and transparent silicone band is sure to get you some attention, at least during the time you’re comfortably wearing them.

Headphone headbands have always been solid and rigid for a reason. They need to provide sufficient structure and support to hold the large and heavy ear cups together while also ensuring the whole device sits securely on your head. That said, that same rigidity is one of the biggest sources of discomfort for users, and many designers have tried to alleviate the issue with comfortable fabrics or soft materials wrapped around the band or, better yet, make the band slightly more bendable to accommodate different head shapes.

This design concept, however, throws tradition out the window completely by replacing the usual metal bands with nothing but silicone, a material known for its flexibility and plasticity. Silicone can retain the shape it was formed into during production, but it can also slightly bend and even twist with enough force. It won’t perfectly conform to everyone’s head shapes, but it will at least put less pressure on your head while you’re wearing it, at least in theory.

It isn’t just regular silicone that was chosen for this design either; it is a transparent variety. This creates reflections and refractions that add a unique visual flavor to the headphones. At least under some light, it creates more playful and more natural rainbow colors better than what any RGB LED lighting can provide. Sadly, such a mesmerizing design does have its share of flaws, particularly with the longevity of silicone as a material. It can warp and deform over time, and discoloration is a common phenomenon with “clear” silicone products. Then there’s also the fact that wires bridging the two halves of the headphones mars the transparent beauty of the silicone band unless the headphones are completely wireless even internally. At that point, however, the benefits of such large audio equipment become moot, and people might as well switch to lighter earbuds. Of course, you could just create a solid, opaque silicone band, but then where would be the fun in such a design?

There’s something about metallic furniture that is completely undeniable. Although metallic furniture wasn’t always considered the ideal fit for residences and homes. The first piece of metal furniture dates back to 1820, and it was a round three-legged table designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel of Berlin. With time this genre of furniture took over industrial buildings, outdoors/streets, and the kitchens of restaurants. However, it broke through its industrial and utilitarian stereotypes and eventually found a place in interior design by the 1950s. Today metallic furniture can be found in many homes and offices, since it is durable, strong, and functional, and can be finished in multiple ways. Designed by Deniz Aktay, the Tablecloth side table is designed to create contrasting images of stability and fluidity. It features a metallic surface which offers it a rather rigid appearance, while the curved edges create an illusion of movement.

Why is it noteworthy?

The shape of the legs is unique as well, they taper sharply to the feet, creating an image of dynamism of even imbalance in our heads. The table is shaped like a tablecloth, but it seems to be in motion rather than rest, truly creating an innovative image in front of our eyes.

What we like

  • Resembles the waves and undulating surfaces of a piece of cloth that looks like it’s falling to the ground

  • It is a conceptual design, so unsure how well it will translate into a tangible product

5. The Tila Chair

Named the Tila Chair, this innovative and unique chair design by Shepherd Studio is made using hundreds of shiny spheres and is intended to be an exploration of density. It features a one-of-a-kind form that instantly grabs attention and makes it a conversation starter.

Why is it noteworthy?

The unique-looking chair is partially inspired by the traditional game of marbles (also called Tila), and truly the chair is built using 210 stainless steel spheres that are supported by a tubular frame.

What we like

7. Whisk Coffee Table

Named the Whisk Coffee Table, this furniture design by Deniz Aktay is made of an artfully shaped and twisted metal tube which serves as the major body of the design, making it an immediate and major eye-catcher, and conversation starter.

Why is it noteworthy?

The metallic form of the coffee table is simple yet twisted, reminding you of a whisk, which is probably why Aktay named it the same. If you look closely at it, it also looks like a contorted safety pin!

What we like

  • Built of interesting geometric elements that perfectly complement each other
  • Fine specimen of sharp form and metallic excellence

  • The actual product could differ after manufacturing since currently, it is only a concept

8. Non-Square

Called Non-Square, this metallic furniture piece has a minimal and stainless steel aesthetic, which makes it look like an ordinary side table dressed up as a cube. As you look closely at the side table, you realize it has a deeper purpose.

Why is it noteworthy?

Designed by Hyunjun Yu, Soojin Jung, and Kyoungseo Paek, the Non-Square is a conceptual furniture design which perfectly merges side tables and stools in the form of a stainless steel hexahedron structure.

9. Strap Furniture Collection

Named the Strap furniture collection, this outdoor furniture collection is inspired by the 1970s poolside furniture. Called the Strap furniture collection, it involves 11 seating designs such as benches, stools, armchairs, loungers, and stackable chairs. They bring the 1970s charm to your backyard.

Why is it noteworthy?

The metallic chairs are made from aluminum straps, which seem to be quite tightly wound around simple tubular frames. The furniture pieces draw inspiration from the designer’s childhood memories of sun loungers around the local pool.

What we like

  • Takes you on a trip down memory lane, evoking childhood nostalgia
  • Not only limited to your backyard, can be used even in university campuses, shopping districts, and other urban spaces

What we dislike

  • The aesthetics  definitely need some work and innovation, as they are a bit dry and boring

10. 4-AL Stool

Designed by Vienna-based Paul Matteo Wesser, the 4-AL stool is designed to be a fine specimen of eco-friendly furniture. Not only does it showcase eco-friendly practices, but it also redefines how we perceive and utilize repurposed materials. It shows us how sustainable furniture can be made from repurposed elements.

Why is it noteworthy?

Wesser repurposed metal balcony cladding elements and converted them into the stool’s main structure. An aluminum profile was selected for the frame, which showcases a devotion to stability durability, and water resistance.

What we like

  • Inspired by coastal architecture
  • Showcases the potential of repurposed elements in modern design

What we dislike

  • It is currently only a prototype, not a final product

Here’s what I personally love about the Geo Wallet’s design. It’s futuristic if you think about the fact that your wallet has a built-in tracking device – but it doesn’t look futuristic. The wallet isn’t the kind you attach onto the back of your phone, it isn’t made of metal or carbon fiber, it doesn’t have fancy moving parts or a rugged design you can run over with your car – it’s as classic as it gets. The traditional bifold that the entire world loves and uses – except underneath the faux leather exterior is a fair bit of technology that makes the Geo Wallet so remarkable.

How NASA’s Starshade Design Inspired this Unique Origami Folding Umbrella

There’s a consensus in the common world that if something isn’t broken, you shouldn’t fix it – it’s a consensus that designers often reject because good design isn’t a goal, it’s a journey. The way current umbrellas open and close isn’t particularly faulty – but that didn’t stop designer Vinayan Ravikumar from taking things to the next level. Meet the Bloombrella, an umbrella that blooms open just like a flower. Relying on origami folding techniques, the Bloombrella borrows from a NASA experiment for unfolding foil shades/sails in space. The umbrella’s fabric starts as a folded cluster that opens outwards, becoming a perfect octagonal parasol that protects against sun and even rain.

Vinayan’s design borrows inspiration from the blooming of the dianthus flower. The flower bud practically unfurls in bloom, and is also the inspiration for NASA’s Starshade. Vinayan’s explorations led him down a similar path, relying on origami to mimic how the starshade opens outwards. The result, an umbrella like nothing you’ve seen before. Watching it open and close is nothing short of hypnotic, as the umbrella’s fabric creases and un-creases to take its closed or open shape. The creases are uniquely geometric too, resulting in an umbrella that doesn’t need any artwork or patterns to make it look attractive.

“The umbrella is an interesting object. As designers, we don’t notice or revere it the way we see chairs, cars, or lamps. Yet when caught in a sudden downpour, it becomes a lifesaver. An object of understated elegance and functionality, its form hasn’t changed much over the past hundred years,” says designer Vinayan Ravikumar. “Drawn to this fascinating contraption that has sheltered us for millennia, I felt it was the perfect canvas to explore tension in motion.”

Rethinking how the umbrella opened or closed meant rethinking the umbrella entirely. The Bloombrella comes with a stem and shade, but its intermediary mechanism gets completely redone. The new mechanism responds to twisting, rather than pressing a button or pushing a member up the umbrella’s shaft. The twisting action allows metal rods to move outwards, opening the umbrella’s shade. Vinayan created his prototype using Tyvek, a tear-proof paper-like material from Dupont. Tyvek has the unique distinction of being great at creasing as well as being durable and waterproof. This made it a perfect candidate for the Bloombrella’s shade, allowing it to hold its origami shape incredibly well, while still repelling water to a noticeable degree.

The rest of the prototype uses traditional materials, like aluminum for the metal parts, and plastic for the mechanism, moving elements, and hinges. The Bloombrella is currently just a student concept, but given that NASA has been employing similar techniques for its starshade shows it’s more than just a proof-of-concept… at least on a cosmic level! Whether it makes for a great umbrella is still something worth determining – perhaps as a larger beach umbrella or a shade for an arena/stadium!
