A Sunroom Makeover

Our journey began in our sunroom, a bright and airy space with an entire wall of windows that flood the room with natural light. For too long, this beautiful room was overshadowed—literally—by an outdated, bulky 85″ VIZIO TV that felt more like an eyesore than a centerpiece. It was high time for a change.

Swapping it out for the sleek 65″ Hisense CanvasTV was like lifting a veil. The room instantly felt more spacious and inviting. The TV’s slim profile and minimalist design complemented the room rather than competing with it. It wasn’t just about replacing a piece of hardware; it was about transforming the atmosphere of our home.

Art Mode: More Than Just a Screen

One of the features that drew us to CanvasTV is its Art Mode. Instead of staring at a blank, lifeless screen when the TV is off, we’re now greeted by a rotating gallery of stunning artworks or our own cherished photos. Connecting my laptop and extending the use of CanvasTV as a second or third monitor makes life easier for meetings, streaming shows, and those long Zoom calls.

Sure, you might not love her music, you might not care for her entirely – but Taylor’s built an entire empire solely on her music skills. While other artists have diverged into building streaming platforms and record labels like Jay-Z, starting cosmetics businesses like Rihanna and Selena Gomez, or even working for fashion brands like Pharrell and Kanye West, Taylor’s net worth is SOLELY tied to her music. With her successful Eras Tour coming to a grand conclusion this year after 2 full years of back-to-back touring, it’s only fitting that she gets her own LEGO kit – even if it’s only fan-made. Designed by the folks at Minibrick Productions, the LEGO Ideas Eras Tour Poster is a seemingly flat piece of LEGO artwork modeled on the Eras Tour poster… but remove each individual thumbnail from the artwork and you’re greeted by a minifigure of Taylor dressed for that era! The poster contains 10 eras with 10 dedicated Taylor Swift minifigures.

The entire LEGO Ideas set comes made from 1,410 bricks, featuring a minimalist yet instantly recognizable depiction of the Eras poster. It’s a fairly simple build, to be honest, with quite a few bricks going towards the artwork, as well as the frame. The result, however, is both intricate AND interactive, as pulling apart the thumbnail for any of the given eras reveals a tiny diorama featuring mama Swift herself.

The dioramas are all ‘taylor’-made to fit each era. It starts with her in her Teal dress for her debut album and era, moving onto icons like the casual outfit for Red, a black-donned Taylor with a snake for Reputation, Taylor in her iconic bodysuit for the Lover era, and the ‘bejeweled’ suit for Midnights. This breakthrough addresses the substantial energy consumption and environmental impact of heating and cooling systems, offering a sustainable solution for buildings and urban environments worldwide.

3. Air and Water Pollution

Increased vehicles and traffic cause air pollution, while untreated factory sewage leads to water contamination. Beijing combats air pollution with strict vehicle quotas and reduced coal use to lower harmful PM2.5 levels. In the UK, the Broads Waterways face phosphorus pollution, damaging water plants. Cleanup methods like phosphate stripping and suction dredging are being explored.

These self-illuminating bubbles purify air as they float, extracting minerals from pollutants and contributing to improved air and water quality in urban environments. Positioned strategically, Pure Bubble aims to mitigate the health impacts of air pollution and support global efforts in environmental sustainability.

Designers Lucy Zakharova and Ted Lu propose ‘En·cap·su·lat·ing’, a revolutionary project aimed at addressing ocean pollution. This initiative involves deploying a network of five dynamic capsules made from plastic waste sourced from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, spanning 1.6 million square kilometers. Each capsule operates at different ocean depths, moving cyclically with floating plastic islands to evenly distribute their cleaning efforts. Beyond pollution mitigation, these capsules serve as research hubs, monitoring deep-sea conditions and biodiversity impacts, emphasizing the urgent need for sustainable environmental solutions to safeguard marine ecosystems.

4. Depleting Water Table

Rapid urbanization strains city infrastructure and depletes water tables. Cities respond with alternative water sourcing, rainwater harvesting, and vertical farming, alongside public education to change water usage habits. Comprehensive water management integrates fresh water, rain, storm, and wastewater. China’s Sponge Cities use permeable surfaces and green spaces to capture, filter, and store water, reducing floods and promoting reuse, enhancing climate resilience.

Hydraloop is a compact water recycling system that fits seamlessly into any home or building and its technology recycles up to 95% of shower and bath water, reducing reliance on fresh water and lowering sewage emissions. Designed for ease of installation and operation, Hydraloop systems clean and disinfect water using a six-step process without chemicals, making it safe for non-potable uses like toilet flushing and irrigation. By conserving water and lowering energy costs, Hydraloop supports sustainable living and contributes to global efforts in water conservation and climate action.

5. Plastic and Waste Disposal

Cities combatting plastic pollution emphasize waste reduction through recycling and composting. Urban areas contribute significantly to marine plastic debris, threatening ecosystems and human health. Quezon City, Philippines, innovates with a “cash for trash” program exchanging recyclables for environmental credits. The Maldives transitions to a circular economy, enhancing waste management with sustainable infrastructure and optimized collection systems to create valuable products from recycled plastics.

Designer: Clear Drop

The Soft Plastic Compactor (SPC) is designed for homes and small buildings to address the accumulation of plastic bags and other soft plastics. Resembling a kitchen appliance, it compresses these plastics into bricks for easy transportation to recycling centers. Simple to use, it turns plastic waste into solid cubes bound by melted plastic, facilitating their handling and recycling. Clear Drop, the manufacturer, ensures collaboration with recycling facilities to safely break down these bricks without emitting harmful fumes, making the SPC a practical solution for sustainable waste management at home.

Cities tackling global challenges require cooperation among governments, businesses, civil society, and residents for sustainable development. Effective climate change adaptation includes increasing tree cover and preserving green spaces to enhance the quality of life, absorb carbon emissions, mitigate urban heat islands, and provide natural flood protection.

Flashlight design concept reframes an ordinary tool as a familiar smartphone

There’s no rule that says everyday tools need to be mundane and boring. With the trend in everyday carries and kits, people are discovering how ordinary objects can become more interesting or even more functional by changing their designs. Sometimes that means giving the object a fresh new look, one far removed from the original design and yet even more familiar to people. A flashlight, for example, doesn’t have to just be a cylindrical or rectangular stick you point with, and this concept design runs with that freedom to envision alternative forms, giving it the shape and interface of one of the most familiar products of this age: our smartphones.

There is, of course, a good reason why conventional flashlights are shaped as long fat cylinders. They’re easy to grab and wrap your hands around, and their length allows you to possibly insert it in narrow spaces. There might also be some traces of their original inspiration, the equally cylindrical candlesticks. It might be an ergonomic design, but ergonomics can change over time as well.

Today, for example, many people are just as adept at grasping their smartphones in their hands, which is the inspiration behind the WHITT concept. In a nutshell, it takes the basic form of a smartphone but puts the internals of a flashlight instead. It’s not a completely faithful recreation of a smartphone, of course, considering it tapers to one side a bit. It actually looks more like a lopsided flask or even a handheld laser projector in this case.

WHITT is also operated like a smartphone, at least when it comes to turning it on and off. The button is at the side, like where you would find a phone’s own power button, which is something we probably unconsciously push dozens or even hundreds of times a day. The similarities end there, however, as the flashlight isn’t even powered by rechargeable batteries. It uses two AA batteries that can be easily swapped out, unlike the fixed batteries inside smartphones.

As interesting as the design might be, it still leaves the question of ergonomics hanging. Opposite the tapered side is a curved edge with a ribbed surface that should improve the flashlight’s grip. Even then, a cylindrical flashlight is probably still easier to grip firmly, which is an important aspect of the tool’s utility.
