Yamaha is a name that can mean two different things to different people. On the one hand, you have the famed maker of musical instruments. On the other hand, you also have Yamaha Motors which imprints the brand on motorcycles. Their products might be unrelated, but the two Yamahas share a similar spirit and passion for good design. Not a few concepts have come out from trying to bring these two different worlds together, resulting in novelties that delight and, in some cases, even become useful products. This collection of outdoor tools could have the same effect, highlighting the spirit of outdoor adventure and commitment to craftsmanship that both Yamaha companies embody.
When camping outdoors, one of the most important tools you need is fire, whether it’s for keeping warm or, more importantly, cooking food. There’s no shortage of bonfire and grill products available in the market today, but the majority of them seem to be content focusing on utility alone. The Yamaha Outdoor Tools concept, however, doesn’t forget that aesthetics and fun are just as important, adding flavor to the experience and making it even more memorable.
The Bon-Burner, for example, is nothing more than five metal sticks joined at different angles to create the semblance of sticks of firewood lying against each other. This form isn’t just for looks, though, as the top formation functions as a trivet for holding pots and kettles. The metal bars can be easily folded or detached, making transport a walk in the park, or in this case, the campsite.
The Bon-Player is a twist on the typical gas stove that is like an amalgamation of a metallic vinyl record and the experience of throttling the engine of a motorbike. You turn the metal disc to control the radius of the fire, represented by concentric rings radiating from the center, and you push it down to increase the intensity of the flame. It is a more involved and more interactive way to control the fire, better than simply turning a boring old knob.
Bon-Grill takes that turntable metaphor even further with a rectangular box that lets you choose the appearance of your grill marks. You simply switch between different mesh jackets, just like you switch record sleeves, to select the best grill marks that will bring out the best taste from your food. Plus, it makes the steaks and veggies look fun as well!
The Bon-Flame outdoor heater is probably the most beautiful and most poetic of the set. A bimetallic sheet changes shape with the heat, opening up like a flower and providing both heat and an enchanting visual representation of that warmth. Unfortunately, all these are just concepts at this point, but hopefully, Yamaha will pick them up and turn them into actual products that we can bring to our outdoor adventures someday.
In an exciting blend of vibrant culture and innovative architecture, Heatherwick Studio has unveiled the stunning visuals for a new school in Bogotá, Colombia. This groundbreaking project, set to rise on Calle 72, one of the city’s bustling main arteries, promises to be a visual and functional masterpiece for Universidad Ean’s School of Sustainable Design.
The seven-story marvel will serve as a dynamic hub for creativity and learning, adorned with colorful, basketry-formed terraces that pay homage to Colombia’s rich craft traditions. Inspired by Werregue basketry, a unique weaving technique of the Wounaan indigenous community, the building’s front façade will be a captivating mosaic of crafted columns and open terraces. This design not only celebrates local heritage but also infuses modern architectural flair, making it a standout addition to Bogotá’s skyline.
The innovative columns of the building, which denote the earthy vibe of the project, are not just regular forms seen in past structures. They resemble organic stones stacked on top of each other, supporting the balconies above. The design detailing of the joint where the balcony slab meets the column is particularly fascinating, and easily noticeable from the ground. This junction appears like ripples created when a stone touches water, adding a unique and visually engaging element to the architecture. The vibrant colors of the columns are certainly eye-catching, ensuring the building stands out in the urban landscape.
Eliot Postma, group leader and partner at Heatherwick Studio, explained that creativity is intrinsic to the city of Bogotá and evident everywhere. He expressed the studio’s desire for students to feel proud of their campus even before entering the building, envisioning a public square that would provide passers-by with a welcoming communal oasis amidst the hard urban surroundings.
Heatherwick Studio’s design goes beyond aesthetics; it aims to create a central gathering space for the Universidad Ean campus. The new building will complement existing heritage structures, introducing a rare and much-needed public space in the heart of the city. The design team is also pioneering the use of innovative façade materials to withstand Bogotá’s intense sunlight, ensuring the building’s resilience and longevity.
Colombia, celebrated as the world’s second most biodiverse country, positions Bogotá as a leader in sustainable development. Universidad Ean’s ambitious vision includes integrating elements of the surrounding cloud forest into the building, embodying the country’s natural beauty. Heatherwick Studio’s biophilic design will feature local plant species on the terraces, seamlessly merging nature with urban life and aligning with Bogotá’s commitment to the C40 Urban Nature Declaration.
The building’s design is a testament to Colombia’s weaving traditions, with columns adorned in colorful, curved lines supporting the circular terraces above. This weaving texture reflects the artistry of local practices, creating a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.
Heatherwick Studio’s first project in South America is set to break ground in 2025. This landmark building not only stands as a beacon of sustainable design but also celebrates Colombia’s vibrant cultural and natural heritage, promising to be a source of pride and inspiration for students and citizens alike.
Advancements in technology, material science, and processes have taken man’s production capabilities to a whole new level. However, with advanced manufacturing, traditional craftsmanship and values have been left by the wayside, sometimes forgotten, and other times discarded as if they were no longer important or were even counterproductive to progress. Of course, this couldn’t be further from the truth, as there will always be elements of traditional crafts and modern tooling that could be mixed in an elegant way. Such is the premise behind this rather striking lamp, highlighting not only the beauty of traditional, handmade crafts but also promoting the culture and the livelihood that also grow alongside it.
Handmade products are admittedly not suitable for mass production. As many have realized by now, however, not everything has to be mass-produced in the first place. Simple, everyday items might be fine with generic and standardized designs, but in exchange for speed and ease of manufacturing, they often lack personality, depth, and impact. Fortunately, you don’t always have to go to either extreme and find some middle ground that showcases the strengths of both methods.
Catalina is a lamp design that does exactly this by combining ordinary lamp electronics and foundations with a lampshade that’s meticulously woven by hand. Specifically, it uses palmetto leaves and traditional weaving techniques called “llata” from Mallorca on one of Spain’s Balearic Islands. Unsurprisingly, this technique is passed down through generations and is mostly done by the women of the locale, a practice whose existence is being threatened by the rise of mass-produced furniture and lighting.
This lamp, however, illustrates the beauty that can come from the melding of past and present. The woven palm leaves form two cylindrical shapes in the form of an eight that encloses two bulbs inside each space. A gap between the two circles is filled by a transparent sheet of glass or fiberglass, serving as a diffuser for the light. The effect is a serene glow that passes through the weave like an otherworldly light.
Lamps like Catalina take time to make and are often more expensive because of the labor involved. That, however, also makes the design more special, giving it a unique character similar to a limited edition product. And unlike factory-made lampshades, these handwoven materials will have differences and imperfections, flaws that become selling points exactly because they are different from any other lamp from the same product line.
Open-ear headphones have garnered a lot of interest lately because of their better-sounding acoustics, lesser pressure on the ears and the ability to listen to the outside world. All these features are very handy when traveling or commuting when you need to be aware of the ambient noises around you. That way you never miss out on any transit announcements or vehicles passing by on the road.
More commonly known as open-back headphones, the options are plenty but finding the one that keeps your music in focus without any sound leaks is important. NTT sonority wants your search to end with its nwm ONE open-ear headphones that employ a deeply researched noise suppression tech dubbed Personalized Sound Zone (PSZ) for next-gen sound.
The headphones have 2-way drivers – a 35mm main driver for pristine audio in your ears and a smaller 12mm driver to cancel out unwanted ambient sounds to minimize sound leakage. Together they work to amplify the high and low frequency sounds to create a perfect balance between a high-quality audio listening cocoon and audible peripheral sounds that are important. In conjunction with the PSZ, there’s the Magic Focus Voice technology with advanced beamforming tech to accurately focus on anyone talking to you, and the Spectral Filtering to diffuse other noises that are not important.
All these technologies are developed in-house by the NTT Computer & Data Science Laboratories resulting in a next level three-sixty degree sound that’s comparable to surround sound speakers. It goes without saying that no matter how much technology is stuffed into headphones if they are not comfortable, lightweight and aesthetically pleasing, the whole purpose is defied. Thankfully nwm ONE open-ear headphones don’t disappoint with their sleek form that sits on any ears without being uncomfortable after long sessions of listening.
They weigh just 6.5 ounces and clamp onto your head and ears without any uncomfortable pressure. The promise of these open-ear headphones seems good on paper but how they’ll perform in real life and justify their price of $299 remains to be seen. However, we are confident the pair of cans will live up to their claims and become a daily driver for many audio lovers!
Audio can determine how you enjoy your gaming, movies, or music playlists. Meet GADOL, the world’s first omnidirectional vibration speaker that opens up a new world of audio to your ears. Transform your space with Gadol
The Bluetooth 5.0 speaker comes with Vibration Sound Transfer (VST) technology to create a vibration effect, so the audio in your ears matches the vibration created by the full-range speaker. This results in a sound profile that’s balanced and immersive. The GADOL speaker produces sound through the surface it is placed on, and the sound adapts to the room’s setup for consistent sound regardless of your position in the room. Sound waves from the speaker spread evenly in every direction so you can enjoy meditation sessions, movie sprees, grooving to favorite playlists, or playing horror games in the dark hours.
Those resonance vibrations created by the speaker have therapeutic and relaxation benefits for a holistic healing solution when it’s time to rejuvenate. The benefits of such a listening session go beyond just the auditory experience, as it eases you into a state of focus no matter what the task. In particular, the VST technology produces different resonance vibrations on different surfaces it is placed on. For example, on a glass surface, the speaker delivers a fuller sound, while on a wooden surface, the acoustics are deep.
GADOL offers a solid 18 hours of playback at high volumes, and you can achieve even more backup if played at lower volumes. Made from a durable iron alloy chassis with an aluminum top cover, the compact listening machine is designed to fit any space or cater to any occasion. Other products offer such features, but auditory fatigue is one problem with them. This speaker doesn’t have any such issues as it’s been tested extensively before creating a consumer-ready version.
Currently up on Kickstarter for crowdfunding, the GADOL omnidirectional speaker has well surpassed its funding goal for good reason. The prospect of something different from conventional listening methods has piqued the interest of music lovers who backed the project. Early bird pledges come with the prospect of getting the $700 speaker at half the price if you resonate with the idea.

Humans breathe approximately 25,000 times a day, yet within each breath lies untapped health data that a Canada-based promising startup aims to decode with their innovative handheld device. Meet the DiagNoze, a portable diagnostic tool can ‘smell’ diseases simply by analyzing your breath. The device reads volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaled air, identifying biomarkers for various conditions including tuberculosis (TB). By identifying these compounds with impressive accuracy, DiagNoze offers real-time, portable diagnostics that are accessible almost anywhere, addressing critical healthcare gaps in both developed and underserved regions. The device integrates next-generation machine intelligence with NASA-derived sensor technology, delivering quick and cost-effective health insights where traditional diagnostics fall short due to high costs and slow processing.
While the most common use of breathalyzers has been to detect alcohol levels, this device can identify diseases simply by scanning your breath.
DiagNoze’s compact design and ease of use make it a practical solution for healthcare settings with limited resources. In regions where access to timely testing is scarce, the device’s rapid diagnostics can lead to earlier interventions, improving patient outcomes and reducing the spread of diseases. The company’s mission received a significant boost through additional funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, bringing their total grant to $1.8 million. This investment will support a clinical study aimed at using DiagNoze to detect TB in high-burden countries, directly contributing to global efforts to curb the spread of this deadly disease, which claims 1.3 million lives annually.
Looking ahead, Noze envisions DiagNoze becoming a staple in everyday healthcare, where real-time health monitoring is as routine as a checkup. The device’s ability to offer actionable insights from a simple breath could revolutionize diagnostics, moving us toward a proactive healthcare model focused on prevention and early detection… quite literally a breath of fresh air in the medical industry, if you ask me!
Urwerk is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the EMC series this year with the release of 10 limited edition pieces that are made out of fuselage pieces of the Lockheed SR-71 “Blackbird” aircraft. Hence, the naming convention “EMC SR-71” which pays homage to the mechanical precision of the famous timepiece that allows the wearer to adjust the mechanical precision offset by the small environment irregularities over time.
The exclusive masterpiece is made in collaboration with aerospace and lifestyle brand Dreamland. This timepiece has been on the idea sheet for as long as four years – back when watch designer Jason Sarkoyan and aeronautical engineer Dr. Roman Sperl inaugurated the Dreamland brand.
The idea of the Urwerk EMC SR-71 materialized when Dreamland got hold of the SR-71 fuselage’s titanium alloy parts. For this limited edition run, the composite of aluminum, vanadium, silicon, iron, and molybdenum metals is melted to create the folding crank handle of the built-in generator of the watch. The timepiece embraces the angular style of EMC watches to replicate the look of reconnaissance aircraft cockpit instrument panels. Urwerk uses the trusted in-house Caliber UR-EMC manual-wind movement (at 28,800vph frequency) that is a traditional Swiss lever escapement combined with an integrated timing machine. Thus, the watch has a power reserve of 80 hours before needing another cranking. The raw feel of the SR-71 is apparent from the four screws securing the case back.
The matte finish SR-71 has a dial measuring 47.55mm wide by 17.58mm thick, with a profile of 49.57mm in the lug-to-lug direction. The dials indicate the hours, minutes and seconds counter in the bottom right corner. The top left corner dial shows the amount of deviation in movement that can be actuated over a period of time. The power reserve of the watch is indicated by a small arc-shaped register on the left-hand side. Adjacent is a larger arc showing the δ performance indicator.
Olive green Velcro-style straps of the timepiece are mounted to the articulated lugs, unlike other conventional watches. The upper frame and the directional arrow for the generator crank are finished in bright yellow to go with the instrument panel theme. Since the 30-meter water-resistant Urwerk EMC SR-71 entangles Blackbird’s eventful history and carries actual parts from the spy aircraft, the $175,000 price makes complete sense!
We might call them laptops, but these portable desktops are not really great for being used on your lap. Never mind the heat that will cook your thighs and other body parts, it leaves you in a painful posture that might leave your neck and wrists cursing you. That said, sometimes we can’t exactly choose the location where we need to open up a laptop to get something done quickly, and there may or may not be a table available to set it down. This briefcase-like concept tries to alleviate some of that discomfort by providing not just a home for the laptop but also a slightly more ergonomic height even when you use it on a table.
Designer: Shivaprasad Vijayan
Laptops are convenient and powerful when you need a computer on the go, but their very design wasn’t exactly made with ergonomics in mind. You crane your neck and hold your hands at an unnatural angle, and that’s when you have it on a desk without any other accessories. And while laptops are portable in a sense, the need for a large power brick, a mouse, and any other peripherals means you’ll need to carry more than just the laptop itself.
LAPCASE is a concept that tries to resolve all the issues attached to a laptop’s usability when on the go, at least to some extent. It’s a laptop bag, technically more like a briefcase, that has room not just for the laptop but for all accessories you might need to bring along with it. It doesn’t just have pockets but actual dividers that organize those peripherals while also keeping them from getting tangled and protecting them against bumps and shocks.
The most important part, of course, is the laptop compartment at the top which is covered by a two-fold magnetic flap. This cover is set to an angle so that the laptop’s back is raised slightly when placed on it. The idea is to rest the laptop on top of the bag when using it, which raises it higher when placed on your lap or raises the screen to a slightly ergonomic height when on a table.
The concept definitely has merit, but there are a few drawbacks to the execution. For one, you will require an external keyboard whenever you use it on a table, as the laptop’s own keyboard will be too high for comfortable typing. And then there’s the issue of the case itself being too bulky, especially at a time when people are trying to actually carry smaller laptop bags. Then again, you are practically carrying a mobile office, so it might be a trade-off worth paying for the convenience of bringing everything you need whenever you leave the office.

Designed with Writers in Mind
Niklas Sjolinder, the founder of BYOK, was inspired by the challenges he faced with existing writing tools. As he worked on his own book, he found it difficult to maintain focus due to endless tabs, notifications, and distractions. While using a distraction-free device, he appreciated the concept but quickly noticed drawbacks such as high costs, limited performance, and restrictive built-in keyboards. These frustrations led him to envision BYOK—a writing tool that would be both budget-friendly and versatile, offering exceptional value by providing the flexibility to use any keyboard while eliminating distractions. This personal journey and desire to create a better writing experience drove Sjolinder to develop BYOK, focusing on what truly matters: the freedom to write without interruptions.
