Teenage Engineering debuts new $300 Sampler… but it’s only Medieval Sounds and Gregorian Chants

Medieval-themed Teenage Engineering Audio Gear was definitely not on my Bingo card this year.

Building on the success of its EP-133 K.O.II sampler from not too long ago, the quirky audio-tech company just debuted the EP-1230, a variant of the K.O.II with a medieval twist. Featuring old-timey instruments like the hurdy-gurdy and the bowed harp, sound effects like swords clashing or even a dragon roar, along with 9 original songs, and a bunch of effects (there’s even a Torture Chamber Reverb setting), this biblically accurate sampler is perfect for people looking to experiment with their sonic portfolio, making audio for medieval-themed games like your Dungeons & Dragons sessions, or perhaps trying to emulate the musical genres of a certain Woodkid.

The EP-1230 is almost exactly like its predecessor in format, except for the ye-olde overhaul. It sports a rather beige color scheme, with medieval fonts on the keys as well as a medieval typeface on the seven-segment screen. Switch it on and you’ve got hundreds of sounds to choose from, featuring everything from old instruments to audio loops, original songs, and even SFX or foley sounds. You may find navigating the settings a bit of a learning curve because even the language on the keys is in Latin, but that’s all a part of the charm I guess.

Beyond its extensive sound library, the EP-1320 is a fully functional instrument. Its intuitive interface features pressure-sensitive pads for triggering samples, a built-in sequencer for arranging musical ideas, and a suite of effects processors to add depth and character to sounds. The device also invites you to build on its capabilities by recording your own sounds through its built-in microphone and line input. Whether it’s capturing the rhythmic hammering of a blacksmith’s forge or the haunting melody of a traditional instrument, the EP-1320 empowers musicians to infuse their creations with a personal touch. The sampler’s compact size and battery-powered operation make it a versatile tool for both studio and on-the-go music making.

The overall design of the EP-1230 is interesting, as it literally applies a medieval skin onto what’s ostensibly a very quirky contemporary-looking sampler. That fusion isn’t something most companies can pull off (it’s giving Medieval Winamp skin), but I guess if I had to trust a company with doing a good job, it would probably be Teenage Engineering. That being said, the market for a medieval-themed sampler could possibly be a lot slimmer than one for the company’s other products. The EP-1230 is up on Teenage Engineering’s website for $300 (the same as the EP-133 K.O.II), and enthusiasts can even grab themselves a medieval quilt bag, leather keychain, or tee shirt to complete the ‘look’.

5. Bello! Bench

Named the Bello! bench. This outdoor bench was created by aluminum producer Hydro and draws inspiration from the penne rigate pasta. It is a unique-looking bench that makes a lovely addition to your yard, for those warm evenings when you want to get some fresh air.

Why is it noteworthy?

It is a versatile piece of furniture and is influenced by the form, shape, and design of pasta. The bench can be used both indoors and outdoors and is made from ninety percent recycled and one hundred percent recyclable aluminum.

What we like

  • Influenced by the penne rigate

  • The shape may create a slipping sensation, making it uncomfy to sit on the chair for longer durations

8. Mondos

The Mondos is a warm and cozy afternoon spent on a Southern Californian beach transformed into comfy and chonky furniture pieces. Designed by two California-based brands Laun and Chet Architecture, the furniture collection includes six pieces.

Why is it noteworthy?

The six pieces are inspired by Mondos Beach in Ventura, California, which is said to be the capital of the state’s surfing culture. The entire collection is designed to be bold yet low-key, inviting, and exclusive.

Why is it noteworthy?

It features a unique galvanized grating design, and is a good fit for cafes and restaurants with an industrial look or theme. It is a great fit for both outdoor and indoor spaces.

What we like

Alexander Lotersztain designed the Mass Table for Derlot. The table is the reimagined and recreated version of the stereotypical and mundane picnic table!

Why is it noteworthy?

Alexander took the typical picnic table and transformed it into a unique flat-packed table in an almost fluorescent yellow color. Made from a sturdy combination of powder-coated steel and aluminum, the Mass table is ideal for both indoors and outdoors.

What we like

  • Inspired by the iconic garden table, but a more sturdy and contemporary version

  • The table can be used indoors, but we don’t think it would be a suitable fit

Foldable mouse concept takes inspiration from foldable phones

Laptops are designed to be used as complete, standalone portable computers that don’t need to connect to any external device to use. At least until you run out of battery and have to plug into a wall socket. That said, the design of laptops isn’t exactly great at ergonomics, whether it’s the cramped and flat keyboard or the centrally-positioned touchpad. That’s why some people still opt for at least a regular mouse, but those aren’t exactly portable especially the more common, bulky designs. This mouse design concept, however, prioritizes portability and compactness over anything else, and it takes a page out of the design of today’s foldable clamshell phones to pull off a rather intriguing yet also questionable design.

Foldable computer mice do exist, but they’re really stretching the definition of the word. Perhaps the biggest example is Microsoft’s Arc Wireless mouse, which is basically just a flat box that you “fold” into a curve to use. It’s more than bending than actual folding, but that’s for a very good reason that we’ll see later.

In stark contrast, this “Emergency Foldable Mouse” really does fold in half, not unlike the phones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6. In its “deactivated” form, it’s more like a square compact or pocket mirror, though its flat edges and sharp corners clearly mark it as some sort of gadget or tool. When closed like this, the mouse automatically turns off and then turns on again the moment you open it.

Unlike a foldable phone, however, this mouse doesn’t unfold completely flat and instead stays at a fixed obtuse angle. After all, this is a mouse and it would be difficult to use it if it laid completely flat on a desk. That said, even that configuration isn’t comfortable, as users of Microsoft’s own foldable mice will attest to. Yes, your hand arcs over the mouse for a more ergonomic hold, but unlike the gentle curve of the Foldable Arc Wireless, you have two edges potentially biting into your skin. Even the designer admits that the design is clearly not for ergonomics but for the object itself.

Admittedly, it carries an aesthetic that will probably appeal to many computer users, especially collectors. The clear plastic version will definitely catch people’s attention, but even an opaque aluminum object with such an angular bend will pique anyone’s curiosity. If anything, the Emergency Foldable Mouse challenges the standard mouse design with an eye toward portability, an area that isn’t as widely explored as ergonomic mouse designs.

This Mobile Monday, we’re taking a look at how the Volkswagen GTI is moving into the electric era with the new ID. GTI. This marks a big change for Volkswagen, as it combines the GTI’s beloved legacy with electric power. The ID. GTI brings a fresh take on a classic favorite, capturing the spirit of the original GTI while incorporating the latest electric technology.

When comparing the sketches of the new and old Volkswagen ID GTI EV, several key design elements stand out. These elements showcase the model’s transformation into a modern electric vehicle while still retaining iconic features that pay homage to its heritage. The new design adopts current trends like minimalist aesthetics and integrated technology features yet retains enough classic elements to be recognizable as a GTI. This approach caters to long-time fans while appealing to new customers looking for a modern, eco-friendly vehicle.

Design Evolution:

Front Fascia: The traditional GTI is known for its straightforward, functional design with a simple grille and prominent GTI badge. Classic round headlights reinforce its sporty yet retro appeal. The Gorgeous Dunkirk Watch pays tribute to the Boats that rescued British Soldiers during WW2

The year was 1940. Thousands of Allied soldiers were trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk, France. The enemy was closing in fast. Panic spread as the soldiers looked out to sea, hoping for rescue ships. With every tick of the clock, their chances of escape grew slimmer. The Germans were quickly advancing to the shores, effectively surrounding thousands of soldiers and trapping them in what could only be viewed as certain death. That was until nearly 700 boats started appearing on the horizon. Sailing over from the UK, these boats gave the Allied soldiers the escape route they needed. Among them, a British fireboat called the Massey Shaw was responsible for saving as many as 600 soldiers.

It’s estimated that over 300,000 British and French soldiers were rescued that day from an impending German massacre. To pay tribute to the boats that ventured out to rescue the soldiers, and the Massey Shaw fireboat in particular, William Wood designed the Dunkirk Watch. Inspired by the boat’s engine order telegraph, the Dunkirk Watch has a face featuring various commands that the captain would trigger while commandeering the boat’s engine.

The Dunkirk Watch is perfect for history buffs and steamboat nerds who like wearing a relic of marine exploration on their wrists. The watch’s face gorgeously captures the details of the engine order telegraph seen on almost all boats from that time. The telegraph would have a handle that you could rotate to select one of multiple commands, allowing your boat to stay still or move ahead. The handle would have a hollow window, allowing you to ‘highlight’ an option on the telegraph – so to celebrate that, the watch boasts hollow outline-shaped hour and minute hands.

On the side of the watch, two red pipes reference the Massey Shaw’s firefighting system, comprised of multiple red pipes that pumped water to help douse fires. Inside, a Sellita SW200 movement powers the timepiece. The watch also comes with luminous markings on the dial and straps made from military leather as well as fabric from firefighter suits. Flip the watch over and you’re greeted with artwork on the back, capturing the tense scene of Operation Dynamo which rescued roughly 338,000 soldiers from the shores of Dunkirk. In the center of the artpiece is a small metal fragment pulled from the engine of the Massey Shaw, putting literal history on your wrist. The watch also has the message “We Will Remember Them” inscribed on the back, along with a serial number unique to each timepiece.

The Massey Shaw played a pivotal role in Britain’s history through the years. While it was best remembered for its role in Operation Dynamo, the London Fire Brigade Fireboat also helped save St. Paul’s Cathedral in London during the German Blitz. It’s said that planes dropped as many as 28 bombs on the cathedral in December of 1940, but the Massey Shaw continuously pumped water from the Thames, keeping the cathedral standing even after an intense bombing campaign. In 1947, the fireboat was one of many secret meeting locations that helped form what we know today as Britain’s NHS or National Health Service.

The Massey Shaw was retired from service in 1971, and now sits on London’s harbor, with a scheduled visit to Dunkirk in 2025 to mark the event’s 80-year anniversary. Aside from making the watch, William Wood also donated £10,000 to help repair and restore the Massey Shaw. The first 600 people to purchase the Dunkirk Watch will also receive a commemorative limited-edition Operation Dynamo coin, and will even have their names engraved on a plaque installed within the Massey Shaw.

Design and Aesthetics

The customizable “blade lights” on the stems offer a neat and stylish feature, but they may not appeal to everyone looking for simplicity. While the lighting adds flair, my focus remains on sound quality, comfort, and overall performance. The lights are a nice touch but not a critical factor in choosing these earbuds.

The ergonomic design ensures a comfortable fit, with silicone tips that improve noise isolation and enhance sound quality. With an IP57 rating, these earbuds are reliable for various environments, whether you’re at the gym or exploring outdoors. We’ll explore the performance aspects further down, diving into how these features impact real-world use and contribute to the overall listening experience.

From a design perspective, there are limited ways to create Bluetooth headsets. They can fit directly in the ear or include a stem, as seen in the Buds3 Pro. This design is practical, enhancing usability by allowing better placement of components like microphones and batteries.

While the Buds 3 Pro’s design draws inspiration from other successful models, the inclusion of unique features like customizable lighting and advanced audio technology sets these earbuds apart. They offer a compelling combination of high performance and style, making them attractive for those who value both aesthetics and functionality in their wireless audio gear.

Ergonomics

From my perspective, the design of the Samsung Galaxy Buds3 Pro case has its pros and cons. I like that the case is lightweight and features practical additions like a USB-C charging port and an LED indicator for charging status. The transparent lid is also a nice touch, allowing me to see the earbuds without opening the case.

However, inserting and removing the earbuds can be awkward. They require a specific twist to fit properly, which isn’t the most user-friendly experience, especially when I’m on the go. I’ve actually dropped the earbuds a couple of times, twice on an airplane while fumbling around in the dark. It’s definitely not ideal. This is an area where the design could use some improvement to make handling the earbuds more intuitive and prevent such mishaps.

The earbuds are offered in two colors, white and black, with small red and blue dots to help indicate the correct placement in the case. While this color coding is helpful, it doesn’t completely resolve the awkwardness of fitting the earbuds into the case.

One thing I wish was smaller is the case itself. While it’s compact enough to fit in the coin pocket of my jeans, similar to the AirPods Pro case, it does bulge out more than I’d like. A smaller case would be more convenient for carrying around when I’m out and about.

Despite these concerns, the overall design remains stylish, and the case complements the sleek look of the earbuds. It supports wireless charging, which is a plus, but streamlining the handling and size of the case would greatly enhance the overall experience.

Performance

The Samsung Galaxy Buds3 Pro delivers exceptional audio quality, particularly when paired with newer Samsung devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 6 or S24 series. Featuring a two-way speaker system with a planar tweeter and dual amplifiers, these earbuds provide crisp, airy sound with robust bass. The 360 Audio feature enhances the soundstage, creating an immersive experience, although it can sometimes emphasize higher frequencies.

A key feature that enhances the audio experience is Samsung’s Scalable Codec. This codec adjusts the bit rate dynamically to ensure stable audio quality over Bluetooth connections. It provides near-lossless sound when the connection is strong, making it ideal for high-resolution audio playback on compatible Samsung devices.

The noise-canceling capabilities are impressive, offering Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), Adaptive Noise Control, and Ambient Sound modes. ANC effectively reduces background noise, making it easier to enjoy music without distractions. Ambient mode is handy for staying aware of your surroundings while listening, and adaptive mode adjusts noise cancellation based on the environment. During my flight to Tokyo from Dallas and back, the active noise cancellation canceled out nearly all the humming from the engine, making the journey pleasant. Just note that for long-haul flights, you might need two pairs of earbuds. In my case, I had a pair of AirPods Pro to swap out. That said, I dare say the Buds3 Pro is competitive when it comes to sound quality and noise cancellation.

The sound quality of the Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 Pro truly shines across various musical genres. In “Hotel California” by the Eagles, the earbuds reproduce the intricate guitar work with remarkable clarity, allowing you to hear every detail as if you’re right there at the performance. The Buds3 Pro handles Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” with precision, capturing the sharpness and detail in his vocals and ensuring the instrumental elements are delivered with crystal clarity. When it comes to bass-heavy tracks like “Royals” by Lorde, the earbuds provide a strong yet balanced bass response that complements the vocals without overshadowing them. The complex musical arrangement in “Take Five” by The Dave Brubeck Quartet showcases the Buds3 Pro’s ability to maintain clarity and balance across a wide range of frequencies, with the piano and saxophone lines coming through with excellent definition and depth.

The Buds3 Pro excels in call quality as well. The triple-mic array ensures clear voice transmission even in noisy settings, while the transparency mode allows ambient noise to enter naturally during calls, enhancing the conversation experience.

Battery life is an area where expectations might differ. Samsung claims up to 6 hours of playback with ANC on and up to 30 hours with the charging case. However, real-world usage often shows battery life closer to 5 to 5.5 hours with ANC, 360 Audio, and high-resolution streaming enabled. Wireless charging and quick charging capabilities add convenience, but for extended listening sessions, having a backup or access to charging is advisable.

The Buds3 Pro also impresses with its sweat-proof performance. I’ve used them to mow the yard in 100-degree weather, and they remain in my ears exceptionally well without any issues with performance. Their IP57 rating ensures they can handle both sweat and dust, making them a reliable choice for outdoor activities and workouts.

Compared to the standard Galaxy Buds 3, the Buds 3 Pro offers enhanced audio quality, more advanced noise control options, and longer battery life. While the non-Pro model provides good sound and basic ANC, it lacks the Pro version’s premium features and audio experience.

Overall, the Buds3 Pro is impressive in performance, making it a top choice for anyone in search of high-quality wireless earbuds with a rich, immersive sound experience.

Sustainability

Samsung has integrated sustainability into the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro by using post-consumer materials in their construction, which helps reduce the environmental impact of new plastic production. They offer features like adaptive noise cancellation and enhanced audio quality through Samsung’s Scalable Codec, making them an ideal companion for any Samsung device. This integration allows for smooth transitions between devices and enhances the overall user experience, making the Buds3 Pro a perfect choice for those who rely on Samsung’s ecosystem for their tech needs.

Motorola Edge 50 Neo leak shows off Pantone colors and minimalist design

Smartphone brands have thankfully become more conscious of the design of their phones, or at the very least are now talking more about that aspect of the product. Not everyone gets it right, of course, especially if you look at some of the ginormous camera designs on phones these days. Once in a while, though, you come across a design that still delivers the promise of powerful cameras without being as in your face as their other kin. This year, Motorola’s Edge 50 series seems to have hit the target with a smooth and elegant minimalist design, as shown by leaked images of the upcoming Motorola Edge 50 Neo. Strangely enough, it calls to mind a design that we actually liked and wished stuck around longer.

In 2022, we reviewed the OPPO Find X5 Pro which seemed to defy convention with a rear design that ditched the usual metal island that surrounded smartphone cameras. Instead, it used a gentler, curving slope that looked distinctive, less noisy, and more elegant, but it sadly didn’t last more than that year’s OPPO flagship. Whether by coincidence or by design (pardon the pun), it’s like that aesthetic has suddenly resurfaced where we least expect it.

A serving of official-looking renders reveals the design of the Motorola Edge 50 Neo or at least its back, and we can’t help but get a sense of deja vu. Not that we’re complaining, since it’s quite a striking and unusual appearance, and it’s not even limited to this particular model. All members of the 2024 Edge 50 family bear this same design language, including the Motorola Edge 50 Fusion with only two cameras on its back.

Also like its other siblings, the Edge 50 Neo is Pantone-certified, a mark it bears proudly as well. This particular model will come in four color options: Grisaille (Gray), Nautical Blue, Poinciana (Red), and Latte (Beige). The images also suggest that the phones will bear the same textured material on their back, which not only gives them a luxurious feel but also improves their grip.

Other than these visual details, however, not much is known about the Motorola Edge 50 Neo just yet. It will have three cameras, and it might follow in the footsteps of the base Edge 50 model with a 50MP main camera, a 10MP 3x optical zoom telephoto camera, and a 13MP ultra-wide shooter. But as beautiful as this phone looks, consumers might end up a little bit confused as there will be not only two, not even three but four Motorola Edge 50 models to choose from when the “Neo” finally launches.

The Miniproca really tries to create a new category of computing by combining two existing categories – the mini tablet, and the mini PC. Tablets are great because they’re touch-sensitive and portable… but they’re not powerful. A mini PC on the other hand packs power, but without a screen. In comes the Miniproca, hitting two birds with the same stone. The integrated touchscreen transforms the device into a versatile computing solution. The touchscreen can be positioned in various angles, from flat to a 90-degree upright position, offering flexibility for different use cases. As a secondary monitor, it can enhance productivity by providing additional workspace for applications, communication tools, or reference materials. For those seeking a more portable setup, the Miniproca can serve as a standalone device, with the touchscreen providing a convenient interface for various tasks.

San Francisco-based design studio Whipsaw has unveiled its latest innovation, the Aescape—a robotic massage system that merges artificial intelligence with cutting-edge robotics to offer a personalized and efficient massage experience. This groundbreaking product is set to redefine the future of massage therapy, addressing both the demands of users and the constraints faced by the massage industry.

The Aescape features metal arms with silicone-covered “hands” that mimic the feel and function of human hands, providing a realistic and soothing massage. The massage table is luxuriously wrapped in vegan faux leather, ensuring comfort and durability. Underneath the headrest lies a user-friendly display, allowing clients to tailor their massage sessions to their specific needs and preferences.

Aescape is engineered to deliver deep-tissue massages with unparalleled precision. The system’s metallic arms are securely attached to the massage table, while silicone pads on the “hands” replicate the natural contours of human hands, enhancing the authenticity of the massage. The innovative design is the brainchild of Aescape founder Eric Litman, who initially created a prototype before collaborating with Whipsaw to develop the final product.

In one of his interviews, Dan Harden, founder of Whipsaw, explained that they were challenged to integrate new technologies, define an all-new physical form factor, explore and create the essence of an Aescape brand through color, material, and finishes, and refine every single design detail. He noted that its appearance had to look very friendly and approachable, especially considering that robotic arms can be intimidating to some. Additionally, it also had to fit all types of user sizes, shapes, and ages.

To cater to diverse body types, the Aescape system uses suspended sensors to perform 3D scans of a user’s body before the massage begins. These sensors are discreetly placed inside light rings to minimize any discomfort or anxiety users might feel about being observed. The collected images and user data are processed through an AI-driven program, which is continuously updated with new data from each massage session. This ensures that every stroke and technique applied by the robot is informed by professional massage therapists and extensive robotic research. The users have a screen below their headrest to even customize their experience and get the most out of it.

The company emphasizes that every stroke the robot is commanded to do has been informed by licensed professional massage therapists, numerous prototype experiments, and years of robotic research. Aescape employs a formidable amount of AI and machine learning technology, enabling it to constantly improve and build its database, which informs its programming.

An Aescape representative mentioned that the machine is designed not to replace human masseuses but to supplement the industry by addressing the shortage of qualified massage therapists. It was stated that Aescape is much more efficient and sustainable than large groups of massage therapists, who often require significant health care due to workplace injuries. Additionally, using robotics reduces commuting-related environmental factors, such as vehicle pollution and energy usage.

The system’s efficiency allows users to enjoy a comprehensive massage in just 30 minutes, fitting seamlessly into busy schedules. With an on-demand booking app, users can easily find and book massage sessions ranging from 15 to 120 minutes, ensuring that personalized care is always within reach.
