OnePlus Ditches Invites for OPO, Enables Them for OnePlus 2

OnePlus

To mark the one-year anniversary of their flagship killer, OnePlus announced that it open up a sale system that no longer requires invites. However, the invite system will stay in place for the newly confirmed OnePlus 2.

It may seem odd to use the same invite-based sale system for a whole year, especially considering the demand for the OnePlus One. However, the manufacturer has explained on numerous occasions the reason behind this decision. First of all, they are not Samsung, so they neither need or want to spend a lot of money on marketing their products. If the users are satisfied with what they’re getting, they’ll recommend the smartphones to others. It definitely looks like some companies have underestimated the power of word-of-mouth marketing. Secondly, OnePlus made razor-thin profits off of their flagship killer. By eliminating suppliers and offering the OnePlus One straight to the buyers, the company cut out the middle man and made sure that people are getting the best possible bang for their buck.

Now that the invite system is gone, anyone wanting to buy one of the best smartphones of 2014 only have to visit OnePlus.net. To maintain the same excellent price-quality ratio, the company will continue to sell the upcoming OnePlus Two using invites. As frustrating as that may sound, getting an invite is not impossible, as they often run contents on their forum and Facebook page, not to mention that there are people out there who are winning invites and don’t use them (incredible, right?).

Word has it that the OnePlus 2 won’t be the only smartphone the company will launch in 2015. There have been a lot of rumors lately about OnePlus One Lite, an Android phone with better specs than last year’s flagship killer, yet lesser than OnePlus Two’s. That makes their whole naming convention a tad bit confusing, to say the least, as they could’ve gone with another name. It is yet unclear if this device is real or not, and if it will be sold using invites, as well.

Regardless of how OnePlus decides to sell its devices, one thing is certain: their smartphones can compete anytime of the day against others that cost twice as much or more. In other words, OnePlus has showed the entire world that people don’t have to break the bank in order to own a very capable Android smartphone.

OnePlus One Smartphone Proves Itself in New Video

OnePlus One

The new OnePlus One smartphone hopes to beat out all of its rivals and with impressive specs the handset could do just that.

Those are some bold claims aren’t they? When your competitors have better brand recognition, more money to fling at marketing campaigns and months upon months of consumer interest you’re always going to have a tough challenge ahead of you in establishing your high-end handset as “a flagship killer” and if you want to go throwing incendiary quotes like that around then you’d better have the hardware to prove it. Luckily, OnePlus are one such challenger, with their OnePlus One smartphone being both a mathematical pun and strong contender against the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S5, the HTC One (M8) and the iPhone 5S.

With a 5.5 inch full HD screen, it certainly has the visuals to be a standout rival. Meanwhile, under the OnePlus One’s hood, its 2.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor isn’t just as ‘rival-worthy’ but it’s actively faster than that of the HTC One (M8)’s 2.3 GHz Snapdragon processor and paired with OnePlus One’s 3GB of RAM in comparison with the other high-end phones on the market right now, it’s miles above the rest. Speed specs aren’t the only place in which the OnePlus One excels either as the phone also has a 13-megapixel camera on the rear (which is also boosted by a Sony Exmor sensor) and a 5-megapixel camera on its front meaning that photos will look beautiful no matter which camera you take them with.

The video of the phone (which you can see above) encourages potential buyers to “never settle”. Presuming that OnePlus don’t want consumers to settle for boring old matte black or ‘easily dirtied’ white cases, the OnePlus One also has several customisable options that see the phone decked in wood, bamboo, denim and, for extra safety, it can even be cased in Kevlar. Yet despite this, the biggest draw to the phone is its price. With the 16GB OnePlus One available for just $299 unlocked, the phone is both hundreds of dollars cheaper and far better in terms of capabilities than any other rival on the market – including frontrunners the HTC One (M8), the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the iPhone S5.

The OnePlus One smartphone will be available in the US, Canada, the UK, certain parts of Europe, Hong Kong, China and Taiwan during Q2 2014.

OnePlus One Is a Potential Nexus 5 and iPhone 5S-Killer

OnePlus One

iPhone 5S and Nexus 5′s reign might come to a sudden stop once OnePlus One is released in Europe and the US in May. This highly customizable smartphone seems to be the perfect mix of sleek design and top specs.

LG and Apple’s flagship smartphones are in danger, as a Chinese startup launched in December 2013 is looking to launch an Android device capable of outsmarting both of these. The impressive specs of the OnePlus One include a Snapdragon 801 quad-core CPU running at 2.5Ghz, 3GB of RAM, a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, 5.5-inch screen with 1080P resolution, 13MP camera with F2.0 aperture and Sony image sensor, NFC, and stereo speakers. In other words, plenty of processing power to run even the most demanding apps out there.

In a recent blog post, the company explained that “Embodying the OnePlus motto of ‘Never Settle’, the OnePlus One boasts industry leading design, superior build quality and top of the line specs at a disruptive price point.”

As the phone runs a custom version of CyanogenMod based on Android 4.4, Steve Kondik meant to express his enthusiasm: “I am incredibly proud of the effort our team has put in to the CyanogenMod build for the OnePlus One. We’ve brought out the full potential of the hardware and complemented it with innovative new features to give users a fresh new experience and the tools to tailor the One to their personal style. We will continue to expand this effort to provide a genuinely enjoyable and powerful operating system for the user.”

Pete Lau, CEO of OnePlus pointed out that “By paying attention to the smallest details, taking a holistic approach to product design, and working with the best partners such as Cyanogen Inc. and Qualcomm Technologies, we have been able to create the greatest day to day user experience in a smartphone without compromise.”

The manufacturers plan to launch OnePlus One in

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Hong Kong
  • Italy
  • Netherlands
  • Portugal
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Taiwan
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

There will be a 16GB Silk White version that will sell for $299/269 and a 64GB Sandstone Black for $349/299. That is considerable less than the $600+ people have to pay for a no-contract Nexus 5, iPhone 5S or Samsung Galaxy S5. Mind you, the price is only one of the aspects that makes this device a Nexus and iPhone-killer.

All in all, many aspects of this phone are rather impressive, but I wish they had come with a better name for it, as it’s very easy to mistake it for HTC’s One.
