Apple Cuts Healthcare Features From Apple Watch

Apple Watch health and fitness

As the Apple Watch gears up for release, Apple is revealed to have cut the healthcare features from the device, although they were considered a selling point.

Back in September, 2014 Apple announced three products: the iPhone 6, the iPhone 6 Plus and the Apple Watch. Whilst their two flagship iPhones got off to a flying start (they quickly became the fastest selling iPhones of all time), people were rather sceptical about Apple’s wearable device. Pegged for a launch in ‘early 2015′ many feared that the Apple Watch is simply a gimmick and that there wasn’t enough time to fix it.

The scepticism stemmed from the fact the device’s two selling points were its ‘digital dial’ which allowed people to zoom in and out of the screen without touching the screen itself (and therefore obscuring the view) and apps such as an arm-wrestling game. Given that prices of the Apple Watch start at $350, they were perhaps right to believe that few people would want to buy it just for those features.

It has now been revealed, however, that that’s not the only reason why many were left felling disappointed. According to the Wall Street Journal, health sensors that originally featured in early versions of the Apple Watch were cut not long before the reveal, which is perhaps why the device looked so unappealing back in September.

In their report, the publication explains that some of these potential features were as complex as a sensor that could track stress or even blood pressure. In theory, those things are massively useful as they would help people make sure that they are living healthy lives and it would let them know when they need to see a doctor or simply just relax. The problem with the sensors is that some offered varied results that differed based on things such as the hairiness of the wearer’s arm or how tight the band on the Apple Watch was. Furthermore, some of those features would also result in government regulation which Apple wanted to avoid.

But even with the removal of these features, it doesn’t mean that the Apple Watch is destined for sales failure. The device has been gutted of a key selling point, true, but Apple still believes that it will sell incredibly well and the company has prepared around 6 million units in preparation. The Apple Watch is likely to launch in March or April so we’ll be able to see just how accurate Apple’s prediction was shortly after.

Google Buys Odysee: Is Google Plus About to Get an Overhaul?

Google Buys Odysee

As Google buys photo and video storage app Odysee, rumours are beginning to swirl that the search giant is about to overhaul Google Plus.

With 300 million active users and over 500 million people registered, Google’s social media network Google Plus is actually doing far better than Twitter (200 million active users). But considering the amount of articles proclaiming that the service is dead, you wouldn’t know it. While Facebook is used for sharing holiday snaps and Twitter is used for sharing details about your lunch, Google Plus is predominantly used for professional networking (sort of like a more public version of LinkedIn) and its lack of appeal to young people means it gets a bad rep.

In fact, Google Plus is doing so well that Google wants to launch its popular Google+ Photos feature as a standalone service. How do we know this? Because they’ve just bought Odysee, an iOS and Android app that lets its users backup photos taken on their mobile devices and save them on their home computers.

A statement on Odysee’s website explains:

“We are excited to share that the Odysee Platform Team will be joining the Google+ Team. Odysee’s vision was to be the easiest way for everyone to capture unlimited memories and access them everywhere. We are very excited to join Google where we’ll continue to focus on building amazing products that people love.

Our deepest thanks to every one of our users. To help you with the transition, the Odysee service will continue till Feb 23rd and soon after that all your photos and videos will be available as a downloadable archive.”

According to reports, Odysee will gift Google+ Photos with more offline capabilities. Odysee explains that it is “especially designed for people who take a lot of videos and would like the option of saving them at their full quality” so we fully expect that (at least) to be one of the upcoming features.

As Google+ Photos already stores all of your videos online, in one place, but as people grow wary of just how much data Google stores on us (and they store a lot) this will keep them under Google’s wing but will give them more privacy and more peace of mind. Furthermore, Google wants to compete with Instagram, Facebook and Dropbox which all encourage users to save their images online and this will certainly help them do it.

Treadmill Desks Can Make You Smarter, Says Study

Treadmill Desk woman

According to the results of one study out of Canada, treadmill desks can actually make the user smarter and more efficient at their jobs.

In this day and age, we have plenty of reasons to be lazy. Between Netflix and YouTube, we don’t have to leave the sofa for hours or even go to the movie theatre to catch a good film. Thanks to voice activated controls on some of the latest TVs, we don’t have to lift our hands to reach the TV remote either. And that’s why so many people are constantly looking for ways to encourage themselves to keep fit and keep moving, when every bit of gadgetry in our homes and places of work is telling us to do otherwise. That’s why there’s so much interest around wearables like FitBit and the Apple Watch.

One slightly less mobile (and sometimes more expensive) device that people have been using to keep fit is the treadmill desk. Unlike your ordinary desk which you sit at until your bottom has gone numb, the treadmill desk encourages you to go for a light jog or a brisk walk as you go about your day to day. And, according to one study, using treadmill desks can even make you smarter.

The study, published in Computers In Human Behavior, took 18 students from Montreal and made nine of them read some text and answer some emails while the other nine did the same whilst using a treadmill desk. After 10 minutes, the groups of students were then given a break and were hooked up to an EEG machine (EEG machines record brain activity) before being asked true or false questions about the text and emails that they read.

According to the results, the group who used a treadmill desk were 34.9% more likely to answer questions correctly than the group that did it whilst sitting down. Those who used the desks also added that they felt that they paid more attention to what they were doing, whilst the EEG backed that up, confirming that their brain activity showed better signs memory retention.

So can we take this study as the gospel? And is this a good enough reason to go out and buy a treadmill desk of your own? Well, not really. One of the flaws of the survey is that they didn’t figure out just how well the participants were able to remember things before they took part in the study and they may have just picked a batch of attentive people. Furthermore, just 18 participants were used which is an incredibly small sample of people to conduct this test on. Alas, there are still plenty of health benefits so that remains a good reason to buy one.

Samsung’s Voice Controlled TV Could Eavesdrop On You

Samsung Smart TV in use

As gadgets begin to offer more and more features, a new smart TV from Samsung highlights our serious fears about new technology.

In theory, smart televisions sound like a phenomenally good idea. Instead of having to buy specific boxes such as the Amazon Fire TV or a games console to to access media apps, your TV would already offer them and so all you’d have to do is use your TV remote to connect to Netflix or Amazon Prime Video to catch up on that show you love. Similarly, you’d also be able to watch shows on YouTube, where media creators are increasingly releasing web series. Or you could listen to music; or play games, or interact with your friends on social media.

The possibilities are endless, which is why smart TVs are speedily increasing in popularity. But as a warning included with Samsung’s smart, Internet connected TV shows, the future of our televisions is also a scary one. That suggestion comes from the following policy, regarding the Voice Recognition feature in Samsung’s new TVs:

“You can control your SmartTV, and use many of its features, with voice commands. If you enable Voice Recognition, you can interact with your Smart TV using your voice. To provide you the Voice Recognition feature, some voice commands may be transmitted (along with information about your device, including device identifiers) to a third-party service that converts speech to text or to the extent necessary to provide the Voice Recognition features to you. In addition, Samsung may collect and your device may capture voice commands and associated texts so that we can provide you with Voice Recognition features and evaluate and improve the features. Please be aware that if your spoken words include personal or other sensitive information, that information will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party through your use of Voice Recognition.”

Yes, the company has confirmed that the things you say to your TV to control it will be sent to a third-party service, where the data is then analysed and sent back, to tell your TV what to do. And while it’s true that most of the time the third-party service is just another tech device (and there’s no human interaction), that’s still incredibly scary.

Samsung has also explained that users can disable Voice Recognition data collection (where Samsung collects various bits of data and text versions of the thing you say in order to improve Voice Recognition’s performance) but doing this will prevent you from using Voice Recognition at all. They also note that you can disconnect your TV from the Internet and that a microphone icon shows up on the screen when the Voice Recognition is activated so even if you think you’re being eavesdropped on, you would know about it. But who will want to disconnect their TV from the Internet every time they want to have a person conversation? And who wants to constantly be on the lookout for that little microphone symbol? No one, that’s who.

And other concerns still remain. Namely, even if Samsung themselves isn’t collecting our voices for whatever usage, what if somebody else is? What if the smart TV gets hacked and some nefarious human being uses it to spy on us? Less bizarre things have happened, so we wouldn’t write it off.

If smart TVs (and indeed, all Internet-connected smart gadgets) are going to take off, privacy concerns like this will need to be addressed in the future. We’ll keep you posted should Samsung make any more statements.

Apple Giving Away Freebies With ‘Free On iTunes’

Apple Free On iTunes

After axing the iTunes Single of the Week promotion, Apple has now launched ‘Free On iTunes’ to give out more freebies.

Since 2004, Apple has generously been giving out free music to its users. Once a week, at least one new single would be available for the price of nothing as part of their iTunes Single of the Week promotion. Songs from artists like James Blunt, Drake, The All-American Rejects and 30 Seconds To Mars were all offered at one point.

But iTunes Single of the Week came to a surprising end in the middle of January, 10 years after it began. At the time, no word was given as to why Apple had axed the service and it seemed especially baffling as the company is becoming more focused on the music side of its business, having purchased headphone maker Beats by Dre for $3 billion back in 2014.

In the wake of the iTunes Single of the Week promotion, Apple has now decided to replace it. In a surprise move for the company, Apple has now introduced ‘Free On iTunes’ which will offer even more free goodies than before.

Unlike iTunes Single of the Week, the Free On iTunes section of the store will provide TV shows in addition to music. And on top of that, the music offered extends to more than just a lone single, with over a dozen free tracks being offered as of the time of writing.

Some examples of free tracks are Flower by Cody Simpson, Pacifier by Catfish and the Bottlemen and Breathe by Anima! None of the other tracks (there are currently 12 on offer) are by particularly big names either but the idea here is to drum up interest and give us new artists to listen to rather than to give us free music from artists that we already spend money on. Some examples of free TV shows include the pilot episodes of Better Call Saul and Fresh Off the Boat, which both recently debuted. Plenty of people are excited about those shows, so you can’t really go wrong there.

Unfortunately, Free On iTunes only appears to be available in the United States but as the previous promotion was supported globally (including in Brazil and the UK) we expect it to roll out there soon. We’ll keep you posted.

Could Samsung Be On of the Main Suppliers for the Next iPhone?

iPhone Teardown

Despite the vicious rivalry between the two companies, it seems that Apple and Samsung are going to work together on the next iPhone.

It’s no secret that Apple and Samsung do not like each other. The two electronics manufacturers have fought it out on everything from patents to territory and with Samsung controlling a majority of the smartphone market (a market share that they would do anything to protect), the companies are constantly battling each other for sales.

Apple certainly seemed to have dealt a mighty blow against its South Korean rivals late last year when they released the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. Whilst the two iPhones couldn’t compete against Samsung’s high-end handsets on power, they did compete on size, meaning that those who would have bought one of Samsung’s famously large-screened handsets opted for Apple’s devices instead.

The two phones did famously well, becoming the best selling iPhones to date, something Samsung was likely unhappy with. But as this rivalry wages on, could Apple and Samsung actually be working together? A new report seems to suggest so.

According to the Maeil Business Newspaper in South Korea, Samsung will be the main supplier of chipsets for the next iPhone. According to MBN’s sources in the semiconductor industry, Samsung beat out competition from Qualcomm and TMSN (two other big names in the industry) and will be proving around 75% of the chipsets for Apple’s next flagship. Meanwhile, Reuters added that Samsung will be making the chipsets at their Austin, Texas plant.

While the information could just be brushed off as a rumour, there are also plenty of reasons to believe it. First and foremost, there’s the fact that Samsung has provided Apple with chipsets before, having worked with them on the iPhone 5S. Apple chose to work with TMSN for the iPhone 6 instead and while it’s unclear as to why TMSN haven been dropped, Samsung and Apple have history. Furthermore, Samsung has had issues with Qualcomm’s chipsets recently, saying that they overheat so this could also have been a factor in Apple’s decision.

Apple’s next iPhone is unlikely to be unveiled for a few months, but we’ll have more for you then.

5 Revolutionary Gadgets to Check Out in 2015

Oculus Rift image

As 2015 prepares to be another big year for technology, we look at give revolutionary gadgets that are going to shake things up this year.

The technology industry is in its prime right now. Gone are the days when people would recoil in shock and horror over electricity (or near enough) and we no longer think that the biggest step up in technology is our phones going from clunky Nokia bricks to thin, touchscreen smartphones. It means that we are ready to embrace new gadgets and devices more than ever, even if it means abandoning our old ways of doing things or using technology to improve our traditional methods.

That’s why we’ve put together this list of five revolutionary gadgets. These five devices will improve an industry or catapult it into public consciousness so read on to find out what will be taking the tech sector by storm in 2015.

1. Oculus Rift

Oculus Rift is by far the most anticipated piece of tech hardware this year. The wearable virtual reality (VR) headset was already on the path of success but then Facebook snapped up Oculus Rift (and the company that makes it) for a massive $2 billion.

Tipped for a mid-Summer 2015 release, when Oculus Rift launches it will mostly focus on games. For years we’ve experienced games by looking at the back of our characters’ heads or looking at a TV for a first person view through their eyes. But Oculus Rift will make us feel as though we are exactly in their shoes; when we turn our heads whilst wearing Oculus we can look around the setting as if we are our character and aren’t just controlling some fictional person on a screen.

In addition to more immersive gaming, Oculus could even be used for shopping (it could make you feel as though you are inside a supermarket) or as a new way of experiencing movies or TV shows.

2. Steam Machines

Also focused on gaming are Steam Machines. Pioneered by game publisher, developer and digital game distributor Valve, their Steam Machines will use their PC gaming platform Steam to power a console that sits under your TV.

Steam Machines allow you to play PC games on your TV much easier than using fiddly wires to plug your laptop or desktop computer into your TV. The benefits don’t stop there either as the games on Steam are much cheaper than their PlayStation or Xbox counterparts and, as Steam Machines are upgradeable with extra parts, you’ll be able to increase their power to handle the bigger, more demanding games.

Steam Machines are available now from various manufacturers (including Alienware).

3. XYZPrinting Food Printer

3D printers have been making a splash for the past few years with their promises of 3D printed jewellery and artwork and even body parts but the XYZPrinting Food Printer allows us to 3D print food.

Demoed at CES 2015 in Las Vegas earlier this year, the printer specialises in chocolate decorations and cookies. You put in the chocolate and it will decorate anything for you with it, which is perfect for cakes or other edible decorations. The cookies meanwhile, require the raw ingredients, which the printer then mixes all up and presents for you in a various array of dough-y shapes. With the cookies you do have to bake them yourself but as it takes most of the effort out of baking it’s probably worth it.

The XYZPrinting Food Printer will be released later this year.

4. Ozobot

Another piece of kit shown off at CES this year was the Ozobot. Described as a ‘robotic toy’ (it was a Toy of the Year finalist at CES), Ozobot is an educational tool too.

The aim of the Ozobot is to teach children how to program as they figure out how to use code to control the Ozobot. The Ozobot can travel lines that you’ve drawn with markers, it can dance with free Ozobot apps (including dance app OzoGroove) and there’s even information about creating custom board games using Ozobot’s programming.

Ozobot is available now.

5. Apple Watch

According to analysts, the wearable technology industry is set to increase by $10 to $60 billion in the next five years and with Apple about to become a massive player in the wearable game, it’s not hard to see why.

For now, the Apple Watch doesn’t have a release date past ‘early 2015′ but people are still chomping at the bit to get their hands on the company’s hi-tech accessory. When it finally launches, the Apple Watch will come in sport, standard and gold ‘luxury’ versions, so that you can tailor your watch type to your specific style. They’ll be able to run apps and with the digital dial on the side of device you’ll be able to zoom in and out easily as you browse the web and won’t have to cover the touchscreen as you try and zoom in by pinching your fingers.

The Apple Watch will be available soon.

6 Essential Apps You Need to Try in 2015

Android iOS apps

With so many apps available, it can be hard to choose what to download. We’ve put together a handy list to make it easier to find new apps to play with.

The iOS App Store and the Google Play marketplace both have over 1 million apps available and according to statistics from 2013, there are over 20,000 apps released every single month. This means that the app release rate is rapidly increasing; faster than any of us can keep up with.

While this generally a good thing as we all appreciate having more apps to chisel away our free time it also poses significant problems. How do we keep track of all of these wondrous timesinks? How do we find out which ones are rubbish and which ones are worth our time?

Without help, both of those are impossible which is why we’ve put together this list of six essentials apps that you need to try in 2015. (All of them are available on iOS and Android).

1. Crossy Road

Why did the rubber chicken cross the road? She wanted to stretch her legs! We’re all familiar with those chicken/road jokes, they’re the epitome of cheesy humour. We pull them out at parties thinking we’ll be the next Jimmy Fallon.

Developers Hipster Whale have gone one step further though, having turned the joke into an app. In Crossy Road, your goal is to cross as many roads, paths and rivers as you can without being squashed by a vehicle, drowned in the river or being gobbled up by the eagle that swoops down if you take too long to cross.

There’s an entire range of kooky characters including Ol’ Man Ben who cackles as he moves, a hipster whale that takes photos as it flops across the road and, of course, a chicken. The game is free to play and it becomes addictive as you try and beat your high score and unlock all of the characters by collecting coins for a lucky dip.

2. Hola

Hola is a must download app for anybody who surfs the web. One familiar thing to those who use the Internet regularly is region locking. Region locking is when you visit a site only to find that certain content is either unavailable in your territory or you find yourself redirected to the local version of the site. Typically, you find this problem when you’re trying to watch videos on YouTube (where certain videos are blocked because of copyright) or Netflix (where the shows and movies offered in the US might be different to your local offerings).

Hola helps you to get around that though as they have a mobile version of their widely popular browser plug-in. Just fire up the Hola app on mobile and you can choose a server in a specific location and fire up another app or use the browser and access the region locked content. Oh, and Hola is free too!

3. Threes!

Apple called Threes! the best iOS game of 2014 which is incredibly high (and much deserved) praise. In Threes! you have to slide numbered tiles to make multiples of three. 1s slide into 2s, 3s match up with 3s and so on and so forth until the 4×4 is filled with tiles and you can’t move anywhere else.

Threes! is deceptively simple to play but getting a high score (the higher the numbers on the board, the higher your score) will take patient and tactical thinking. The beautiful design and soothing music means that it’s an absolute delight to learn. Threes! costs just under $2.

4. B612

B612 is the selfie master’s dream. Instagram has incredibly basic editing capabilities, with just a small selection of filters offered, but that’s where B612 comes in.

There are over 50 different filters available, each making your face look as lovely as possible and they’re incredibly varied too which means that your selfie will look good in any lighting. B612 also makes life easier by featuring various sizing options (you can also stitch multiple selfies into one) and a one touch shot so you no longer have to angle your hands weirdly to reach the camera button – in B612 you can just tap anywhere on the screen. And, once you’re done you can export your masterpieces to another social media site, including Twitter, Gmail and, of course, Instagram.

B612 is available for free.

5. Duolingo

If you are learning a language (or would like to) then you absolutely have to download Duolingo. Completely free, Duolingo will teach you a language for free with games, tests and personally tailored challenges to help you progress through your studies and to make sure that you aren’t learning and then forgetting your new vocabulary.

The only downside to Duolingo is that right now only European languages are available. However, if you want to learn French, Spanish, German or Portuguese (there are several other languages on offer, listed here) you must download this.

6. last.fm

Just like apps, finding new music can be a bore or it can be frustrating as you cycle through playlist upon playlist looking for the perfect tunes to compliment your Finnish death metal interests. last.fm takes out all of the guesswork as it keeps track of which artists you listen to and compiles recommendations and radio stations based on your tastes.

It also helps you find out which artists are your favourites as it notes down plays. Handy for ‘I’m a better fan than you!’ arguments too.

last.fm is available for free.

Be My Eyes App Helps You Help a Blind Person

Be My Eyes app screenshot 2

A new iPhone app allows sighted people to aid the blind in day to day activities.

Being blind or vision impaired is no walk in the park. While those with bad vision often have guide dogs, there are obviously things that a guide dog cannot help with; after all they are trained to keep you out of harm’s way and not to read, write or do things that require opposable thumbs.

Having a human carer also poses some challenges as not only do carers cost money, they aren’t always available all of the time. It means that for parts of the day, someone with poor vision is at the mercy of their eyesight and there’s nothing they can do about it.

Until now. The iPhone already has such features as multitouch, VoiceOver, Siri, Speak Screen, Dictation, and Zoom that make interacting with the device that much easier but now, going one step further is an app called Be My Eyes which connects those with bad vision to those with good eyesight so that they can find help for everyday tasks.

Be My Eyes works by setting up a live video chat between the helper and the vision impaired person. Basic tasks such as reading labels and use by dates can all be conducted by volunteers, with the volunteers gaining points for their work.

The developer explains:

“As soon as the first sighted user accepts the request for help a live audio-video connection will be set up between the two and the sighted user can tell the blind person what she sees when the blind user points his phone at something using the rear-facing camera.

As a sighted user you don’t need to worry about missing a call and ‘leave a blind person hanging’ – you are a part of the bigger Be My Eyes helper-network and we will find the next available sighted person in the network. The challenges that the blind person needs help with can be anything from knowing the expiry date on the milk to getting help crossing the street.”

Be My Eyes is now available for free via the App Store.

Microsoft Will Offer a Windows 10 Free Upgrade Later This Year

Windows 10

At the company’s Windows 10 preview event, Microsoft revealed that a Windows 10 free upgrade will be offered to existing Windows users.

When Windows 10 was announced back in late 2014, consumers and critics watched carefully to figure out how Microsoft planned to make amends for Windows 8. Windows 8 removed the Start bar and introduced the tiled Metro lay out which made navigating on a desktop computer or non-touchscreen laptop nigh on impossible. The bizarre design decisions were so polarising that many Windows users jumped ship to Apple’s iMacs and Macbooks or stayed on Windows 7 just to steer clear of Windows 8 altogether.

So the fact that Windows 10 would reverse these things – bringing back the Start bar and allowing users to decide what sort of navigational menu they use – was heralded as a fantastic decision on Microsoft’s part. The problem with this is that while everyone talked up Windows 10′s new features, there were still millions of people stuck on Windows 8, unable to access its successor without having to pay for it.

But Microsoft will remedy that, having now announced plans to offer a Windows 10 free upgrade.

Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s Executive Vice President of Operating Systems, announced the plan on stage at the Windows 10 preview event. Myerson explained that for the first year following Windows 10′s launch, those using Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows Phone 8.1 will be able to upgrade to their latest operating system for free. Other than hardware requirements (which will tell you if your device can run the operating system or not) that have yet to be announced, there don’t appear to be any strings attached.

Myerson also said that the policy is part of their new ‘Windows as a service’ stance. As a result, devices (including those that upgraded to Windows 10 for free) will be consistently updated during the “supported lifetime for the device.”

While this is obviously an attempt to bump up Windows 10′s numbers early on, and avoid the abysmal adoption rate that Windows 8 suffered from, it would be unwise to turn our noses up at it. Not only does it get us a free operating system, but as this allows developers to “target every single Windows device” we could very well have more games and apps to play with too.

Windows 10 will launch later this year. We’ll keep you posted once we know more.
