Future Robotics Technology Center’s Rosemary to accompany its predecessor at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant

Gaurav Thakur:

Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant disaster is still in the memory of Japanese with its ex-Prime Minister recently expressing his fear at the time of tragedy. Japanese have been at the forefront in robotics, with companies like Honda giving a demo of how advanced their robots are. Unfortunately, at the time of calamity, it was not Japanese but American robots that first detected leakage. The Future Robotics Technology Center sent a robot some time back inside the nuclear plant to tackle things in case of collapse of subway tunnels. The center is going to roll out a new robot named “Rosemary” that will extend the work of the first robot inside the plant.

Prosthetic heart used in an infant to keep him alive till he found a donor

Gaurav Thakur:

Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital, one of the three children’s research hospitals in Italy has accomplished a feat that anyone in the world would be proud of. The doctors in this hospital have implanted an artificial heart that weighs just 11 grams in an infant. This is the world’s smallest heart ever implanted that helped in continuing the life functions of the baby for 13 days until an alternate organ was found for implant. The doctors have shown promise that the technology in future could help prolong life of those suffering from heart diseases by replacing it with one such prosthetic heart for lifetime.

Tivoli delivers Bluetooth-enabled radios, a new radio app and headphones

Gaurav Thakur:

Why don’t you KISS (Keep it simple silly)? This is the question Tivoli seems to have been asking its competitors for years, a brand that believes in sheer simplicity accompanied with exquisite audio quality. Tivoli has enjoyed success thanks to its self-belief and a loyal audience. The company has seemed hesitant though in the past to embrace latest technologies and just wanted to continue with its retro themed gadgets. This time though it has decided to embrace Bluetooth into its Pal and Model One tabletop radios that would have an additional BT attached to their names. This means in case you’re not listening to radio you can pair your Bluetooth-enabled device with one of these radios and listen to your favorite music (without the need of buying additional speakers). The two more additions to the line-up are a Tivoli Radio App and a “Radio Silenz” headphone.

A robot that’ll clean up mess back home while you’re at work

Gaurav Thakur:

Work work work! You have been busy lately and the state of your room is just going down the drain. Every day you come back the chaos is getting worse and things are getting more cluttered. How good it would be if someone managed your home while you were away. A team of researchers in Cornell is working on such a robot that would take charge of keeping things in place at your messy home. This includes tasks such as keeping things in your refrigerator, identifying objects to be disposed and moving them to a dustbin, or organizing clothes in your wardrobe. Robots that organize things on a flat surface have been worked on before and this is the first robot that targets objects of different shape and size placing them on non-trivial places.

Being a diabetic means dealing regularly with irritating needle pricks (from two to ten times a day) to determine sugar level in blood. Dr. Jun Hu, an associate professor of Chemistry at The University of Akron has a solution that might make life of diabetes patients easier. Dr. Jun has proposed contact lenses that would change their color to help you determine increased sugar level in body. What makes it possible is the fact that you can determine sugar level in blood by checking the sugar level of tears in the eyes.

Foldboat is a fully-funtional boat you can carry in your backpack

Gaurav Thakur:

It’s good news for those who often like to float down the stream amidst the tranquil waters. You don’t really need to hire a boat or be troubled by the lack of possibility of this transport medium in remote locations, because you can now carry one in your backpack. The idea of a Foldboat was conceptualized by two students of London’s Royal College of Art Max named Frommeld and Arno Mathies, who are students of production design. Interestingly, these two got some scolding from the Royal Parks police while trying to demo their new invention.

"gTar", dock your iPhone to a guitar and learn to play the strings

Gaurav Thakur:

We have seen a lot of people giving up on guitar very soon. Maybe they never went to a good enough instructor or maybe learning guitar itself is too tough. You might think of taking up guitar lessons again and all you need to have is an iPhone and a “gTar”. A quite interesting looking guitar has a dock for iPhone. All you need to do is load the gTar app, select the song you want to play and play the strings. You don’t really need to do much with the fretboard as LEDs on it are controlled by the app and light up accordingly, playing the correct tones.

Israel’s butterfly drone to map previously unexplored enclosed spaces

Gaurav Thakur:

Israel might be a mecca of start-ups but it is also very well known for its military technology. Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), known worldwide for their commercial aerospace technology has given a demo of butterfly-shaped drone that will not even let the enemies know what they are dealing with. The drone, which is more of the size of a moth is expected to play a strategic role in determining where the enemy is hiding. Weighing at a mere 20 grams, the four-winged butterfly can flap its wings up to 14 times per second. Surprisingly, what amounts to 15 grams of its weight is a camera and a memory card.

Improve your self control by resisting chocolates popping from the chocolate machine

Gaurav Thakur:

You might think you need yoga and meditation to improve your will power, but psychologists don’t seem to concur with you. What they rather believe is for you to have this Chocolate machine installed at your cubicle or at home that pops up a chocolate ball every now and then. The trick to this lies in trying to avoid falling for the lure and feeding the chocolate balls back to the machine. We do admit in case you’re a huge chocolate fan it might end up being a daunting task for you.

Airplane converted into Space Shuttle food truck is up for grabs on eBay

Gaurav Thakur:

One of the unique items on sale on eBay, a Space Shuttle Cafe, offers you a well stacked kitchen that should interest people with tastes for food as well as space. Yes, it’s a plane not a space shuttle but the paint in the exteriors and the interior setup will let you believe you’re sitting inside one. Painted with astronauts on inside with a logo “Dare to dream” would let you go back to times when invading space was still a dream. The owners seem to exploit the emotion though keeping the price of the gimmick as high as US $150,000.
