LG launches 5-inch 1080p Full HD LCD display with a whopping 440ppi

Along with becoming larger, smartphone displays are showing off great pixel density these days. The iPhone 4S touts 326 pixel per inch; while the most recent Samsung Galaxy S III comes with a 4.8-inch display with a competitive 306 ppi. To break all the records, LG Display has come up with a 5-inch panel that features a 440 ppi for greater image clarity. Of course, the LG Display falls short to Toshiba’s recent 6-inch display with 498 ppi. But it becomes exceptional thanks to its 5-inch size, which is more suitable for consumer gadgets than a 6-inch screen.

MIT researchers work on various facial expression tracking technologies

An application or software that can read facial expressions of people will be highly helpful in market and political surveys. Pollsters can identify the attitudes of people, who watch TVs, surf web, listen to a public meeting or just walk on street overhearing to a public speech. A team of researchers at MIT’s Media Lab is currently working to develop technologies that can interpret human expressions from their faces. Various advanced technologies are used by the researchers for realizing the system, which can unearth real human response to a variety of propaganda campaigns.

IFAB tests goal line technologies to end goal line contentions on field

For soccer referees, it has long been an intricate job to officiate a goal if the ball has just kissed the goal-line. We found many contentions in playground between players and referees in deciding goals. Most often, inappropriate decisions even changed the fate of many decisive games. Recently, we witnessed to a goal wrongly allotted to Chelsea’s Juan Mata as his team beat Tottenham in the 5-1 FA Cup semi final. To end this dilemma, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) has tied up with a pair of firms for advanced goal-line technology testing.

Apollo 17 tool kit auctioned for $75,959 at Space and Aviation auction

We have earlier told you about the most expensive space memorabilia. And for space enthusiasts, America’s prestigious autograph auctioneer RR Auction has sold out a set of vintage space artifacts and memorabilia in its May 2012 Space and Aviation Autograph and Artifact Auction after its successful Space auction last year. The online auction that took place from May 17 to May 23 attracted lots of space and aviation collectors bidding for rare space relics - space artifacts, letters, manuscripts, and other autographed aviation memorabilia. Below are the highlights of the auction, including the rare Apollo 17 -space flown tool kit that is believed to be the last complete space-flown tool kit.

Shoal robotic fishes lurk in sea and send in real time pollution data

European researchers have deposited a robotic fish into the waters of the port of Gijon, Spain for real-time checking of water pollution. Called the Shoal, this amazing one-and-half-meter long robotic fish will lurk in the waters, collect and send pollution data into the nearby base-station. The research project is led by the British technology firm BMT with financial support from the Seventh Framework Programme for ICT.

Seattle based cloud message service provider Zipwhip has cunningly produced a coffee maker called the Textspresso that will hand out your coffee on your request via a text message from your handset. The machine also prints personalized messages on the froth of your coffee with an edible ink. Well, Zipwhip touts the Textspresso as the world’s first text-enabled robotic Barista coffee maker.

NTT Docomo shows off a two sided see through touchscreen

Japanese cellular service provider NTT Docomo has showcased a two-sided transparent touchscreen prototype. The completely see-through screen is able to accept inputs from both the sides. Well, you can operate a device with the two-sided display from both the front and rear ends. However, Docomo hasn’t showed off any device with such a screen yet.
