Is This Bicycle Unstealable?

unstealable bicycle Is This Bicycle Unstealable?
You don’t need to carry around a big heavy lock for your bicycle when you have this new bicycle design called the Yerka Project. That’s because the frame of the bicycle itself becomes a giant lock. You separate the bottom of the frame, unhook the seat post, then use that to make the bike into a lock.

You can wrap the bike around objects of most any size. You can see in this quick video below how exactly it works.

While conceptually using the frame as a lock is a good idea, it still leaves a few big issues unresolved: for starters the tires are not locked up. Although you definitely could just unhook your front tire and put the “lock” through it. The back tire is still an issue. Secondly is how secure is this lock? That’s a big what if. It’s no good if you can pick the lock with a pen cap. I think it needs some work and might be good as is for some situations but they’re definitely onto the start of an idea here.

Reinventing the U-Lock Bike Lock

vier lock Reinventing the U Lock Bike Lock
The common U-Lock for bicycles (popularized by Kryptonite brand) is one of the most secure ways to lock up your bike. But it’s shape makes it a bit bulky and unwieldy to carry around on your bicycle- how many times have you seen someone riding with one just dangling over their handlebars? Husband and wife team Allen and Paige Young have come up with a reinvention of that lock into something more useful- the Vier Lock. This lock breaks down into 4 pieces so it can easily be transported.

It’s high security and it “fits into a bag about the size of a burrito”. You had me at burrito. The lock is made of hardened steel and has a pick and drill resistant lock cylinder. It basically takes the rounded end of the U-lock and puts a squared off lock and shackle set there instead. So you’re lock now has two locks (of course to remove it from a locked bike you only need to undo one). You could even swap out the two shackles for longer ones if your bike or place you are locking it to requires it. The Vier comes with a nice little carrying bag too:

Since it breaks down into the size of a burrito, you could also use that bag to carry burritos. They should invent a lock for burritos. So the Vier is a patent pending bike lock that could be a total game changer. It’s a big improvement on the U-lock, adding a level of portability that’s necessary for cyclists. And burritos, can’t forget the burritos.

Cloud-Connected Bike Lock

skylockWe are sure all of you have seen the episode of the Big Bang Theory where Sheldon, Leonard, Raj and Howard send the internet signal around the world to turn on the lamp in their apartment, right? And when Penny asks “Why?” the answer is simple “Because we can.” Duh.

That’s what makes the cloud-connected bike so super cool among all the bike locks. Because Skylockcan. These guys have invented a solar powered bike lock that you control with your smartphone through the cloud. There is no key to lose, or as what happened to one of us here recently, no key can be broken off in the lock so you need to call the lock and key guy to come save the day. You can unlock it one of two ways, tapping in the key code, or you can use your smartphone.

This bike lock can also be a security alert system for your bike. Your phone will be sent an alert if someone moves or shakes the parked bike longer than than it should be. That same system can also detect if you have come to a sudden stop and can determine if you and your phone are farther away from the lock than you should be when someone is messing with it. It will send you a message on your phone to see if you are okay, and if there is no answer help is alerted.

It’s a little bit of an expensive bike lock at $159 but if you can, why not?

Forever Lock Unpickable Bike Lock

Forever Lock Unpickable Bike LockSecuring your bike is always a challenge and a good bike lock is an important part. One of the challenges with key-based locks is of course someone just picking the lock. An inventor here claims to have created an un-pickable lock since the key chamber is simply not exposed. Just opening the lock is fairly complicated and we suggest just watching the video.

As difficult as this looks, there appears to be some folks at Keypicking.com that think they can still get in.

Interlock Bike Lock Actually Works, Is A Great Idea

Anyone that cycles will tell you: carrying a lock everywhere is essential, but cumbersome. The Interlock system aims to solve that problem by stuffing a long cable and lock within a specially designed seat post. Once you need to secure your bike, simply pull it out of the post and wrap it around the bike frame and an external object (like a bike rack). You can attach the cable in several different manners, some of which make it impossible to steal your post, or rear wheel. You can even combine the Interlock cable with a regular U-lock to render your ride extra secure. Any bike can be retrofitted with this system in a manner of minutes; you simply have to replace your old seat post with this one. The cable is pretty long, although we have no details on the strength of the materials. Sure, this won’t work for those that are extra paranoid about theft, or competitive cyclists who think that a carbon fiber post actually makes a difference. But for the casual to moderate cyclist looking for a convenient way to secure their bike, this is pretty decent. It’s $39 on pre-order at Kickstarter, and the project is halfway to being funded.
