Nintendo Switch Reminds Us it’s a Good Time for Online Gaming

While the Nintendo Switch is probably going to turn out to be a very excellent console, its early days have been riddled with bugs and few playable games. This is to be expected with the release of any enterprising proprietary technology. But for people frustrated with the Switch’s growing pains, today might be a day when we’re reminded about the online gaming industry.

Online gaming is versatile and accessible. Through gaming giants like Steam, almost any game that you can imagine can be played via one device or another. Consoles like Nintendo’s aren’t nearly as versatile, for good and ill. They’re much more like gated communities – exclusive content neighborhoods forcing you to play their games on their controllers. With online gaming, you can break classic console games free from proprietary systems, and find out how different the game is to play with a keyboard and mouse.

Online gaming also has people playing games for real money, a phenomenon that has yet to break into console gaming in a perceptible way. Depending where you are in the world, you may have access to thousands of different games with real financial winnings. We’re talking about everything from classic games like Poker to professional-level competitive leagues surrounding console games like Smash Brothers. People have long since found ways to monetize classic MMOs like Warcraft. In fact, these examples only scratch the surface.

The Nintendo Switch also highlights another advantage known by computer and online gamers – the Switch can’t be customized like computers can. The one you buy on Amazon is the same model enjoyed by everyone else in your country. Not so for people who play online games. The speed and sophistication you can achieve in this game world is limited only by the power of your computer, something you can customize and enhance to the nines.

In the end, the Nintendo Switch isn’t bad because its online accessibility is poor. This is inherent to the nature of most consoles and the games they support. However, for people adept at finding the best gaming experience available online, the Switch may prove a little constricting. Sure, you might enjoy beating the new Zelda, but once that’s done, you’re limited to the games produced and supported by Nintendo. Will that give you the well-rounded gaming experience you crave? Maybe. Maybe not.

We’ll no doubt see makers begin pumping out fast-paced racing games, casino bonuses being used with online poker play, stimulating strategy games and even well crafted multiplayer experiences all made especially for owners of this new gaming innovation.

Dragon’s Dogma Online – Second Trailer

The second trailer for Capcom’s upcoming online open world action RPG video game ‘Dragon’s Dogma Online’ has just been released. You could check it out after the break.

To refresh your memory, Dragon’s Dogma Online is made to essentially be the original Dragon’s Dogma, but fully online. The game was initially developed in parallel to the expansion, Dragon’s Dogma Dark Arisen, and will allow players to battle monsters together in the same action-based manner of the original game.

The plot of Dragon’s Dogma Online will revolve around a mystic ‘white dragon’. Due to unknown reasons, the dragon has been weakened, and in order to resolve this problem, the white dragon seeks out scores of people, making them all Arisen to fight for it.

Dragon’s Dogma Online will hit PS4, PS3 and PC this year in Japan as a free-to-play title. [YouTube]

Dying Light Gets First Developer Tips Video

Here we have the first developer tips video for Dying Light. Brought to you by lead game designer Maciej Binkowski, this first developer tips video let you discover the pure joy of being the Night Hunter and learn the benefits of co-op play.

The rest of the developer tips videos will be released daily until February 22. Just to remind you, Dying Light is a zombie apocalypse-themed game set in an open world similar to South American slums and cities. Players traverse an expansive urban environment overrun by a vicious outbreak, scavenging the world for supplies and crafting weapons to defend against the growing infected population with a heavy focus on free running mechanics. ScreamRide Gets Launch Trailer

Frontier Developments has finally released the launch trailer for their upcoming construction and management simulator video game ‘ScreamRide’. You could check it out after the break.

In case you didn’t know, ScreamRide is a spiritual successor to RollerCoaster Tycoon. The game featured more than 50 levels and three gameplay modes: Engineer, ScreamRider and Demolition Expert. In the Engineering mode, players can build and customize their own roller coaster and thrill rides with extreme designs with props, ride pieces and modular scenery available. Players are also tasked to solve construction puzzles in order to create coasters, amusements and environments from the ground-up. In the ScreamRider mode, players can ride and take control of the coasters created. In the Demolition Expert mode, Players are tasked with demolishing environments and objects to meet various conditions in order to gain points.

ScreamRide is scheduled to hit Xbox One and Xbox 360 on March 3rd in North America. [YouTube]

Sony has finally revealed the release date for Resogun’s upcoming DLC pack ‘Defenders’. This add-on content will hit PlayStation 4 on February 17th in North America for $4.99.

For your info, the Defenders DLC Pack will consist of two new game modes including Protector Mode – sees you taking to the skies to defend one of the last human colonies remaining. Utilize all new power-ups including Super Boost, Teleport, and automatic city defences; take down the enemy and deliver as many of the last humans to each city in order to extend your grip on the planet, and Commando Mode – lets you play as the Last Human who was left behind. Check out this new Yharnam environment tour video for Bloodborne. Courtesy of IGN, this latest video takes us to a trip through dark and frightening environments of Yharnam.

To refresh your memory, this action-role playing video game takes place in the gothic, ruined city of Yharnam which is rumored to house a potent medical remedy. Over the years, many travelers make pilgrimages to the city seeking the remedy to cure their afflictions; the player takes the role as one of these travelers. Upon arriving in Yharnam, however, it is discovered that the city is plagued with an endemic illness that has malformed most of its denizens into bestial creatures. The player must navigate the streets of Yharnam and overcome its violently deranged inhabitants and horrifying monsters in order to survive.

Bloodborne will hit PS4 on March 24th in North America.
