Must See HDTV (July 8th – 14th)

After a long holiday weekend we have a few new things to look forward to including NCAA Football 14, season two of The Newsroom and the season premiere of Top Gear. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

The Bridge
FX is debuting a new drama this week, as The Bridge follows cops from the US and Mexico on the trail of a serial killer. Similar to The Killing it's a remake of a foreign series, although that one featured Denmark and Sweden. Although AMC's show had its issues, after efforts like The Americans and Wilfred from FX we're willing to give this one a shot.
(July 10th, FX, 10PM)

Orange is the New Black
Orange is the New Black debuts at 3:01 AM ET Thursday on Netflix in all regions, but it's already signed up for a second season on the streaming service. Fans of Showtime's Weeds may be looking forward to it the most, since both comedy-dramas were created by Jenji Kohan. Set in a women's prison, OITNB follows a new inmate sentenced to fifteen months for her part in moving drug money a decade earlier. We'll find out in a few days if Netflix has another hit on its hands, after that the next original series up should be Ricky Gervais' Derek.

Netflix renews ‘Orange is the New Black’ for season two, before season one launches

Netflix renews 'Orange is the New Black' series for season two, before season one launches

Netflix is putting its money where its mouth is when it comes to building a library of first-run content, tonight announcing it's signed up new series Orange is the New Black for a second season, set for release in 2014. That's particularly notable because unlike Hemlock Grove's renewal last week, this series hasn't even been posted to the streaming site yet. It's not the company's first bold move however, as it signed up for two seasons of House of Cards without seeing anything first, but that had David Fincher and Kevin Spacey attached. This new show is written by Weeds creator Jenji Kohan and follows a woman from Brooklyn sentenced to 15 months in federal prison -- season one debuts July 11th.

Netflix original series 'Orange is the New Black' debuting July 11th

Despite having recently introduced the likes of Hemlock Grove and House of Cards, Netflix isn't standing still: it's boosting its original content with yet another production, Orange is the New Black. The new comedic drama series, created by Weeds' own Jenji Kohan, is set to start streaming to Netflix subscribers worldwide beginning July 11th. Similar to Netflix's House of Cards, Orange is the New Black consists of 13 episodes running at around 60 minutes -- however, the main story here won't be based on drama coming out of D.C., but rather a "world populated with unforgettable characters and no-holds-barred humor set against the backdrop of a women's prison." Be sure to peruse the PR after the break, where you'll find more particulars about the plot, as well as the full cast list.
